What is Rib Flare? How Do You Fix It? Rib Positioning vs Rib Angle

  • Rib flare is a term that often gets thrown around in the rehab world and most of the women I see ask me what the heck it means. :) The confusing part is that it can refer to two different things. One is rib positioning, and one is rib angle. So let’s break this down a bit and see if we can make sense of it.
    In case you missed my IG post from today about rib flare, hop over to the blog for more information about each type of rib flare, how posture comes into play and how the pelvic floor impacts infrasternal angle.

      Hi! I came to the comments to see if discomfort is something that happens with river flare. Can you describe the discomfort you get with the rib flare? I had my son 4 years ago (also my third pregnancy), and one thing that has stuck around for me was discomfort around my lowest left rib. I realized it seems to protrude further out than my right rib. I also deal with bloat (food intolerances triggered by pregnancy/breastfeeding) so sometimes the bloat makes the left sided discomfort worse. Or maybe it’s the rib that makes the bloat feel worse. Anyway, my left side is just messed up since pregnancy, probably starting with left hip dysfunction (well, Symphisis Pubis Dysfunction/SPD) which thankfully is no longer an issue, but I do get left hip stiffness now versus before that pregnancy. I’m sure this, with the growing baby, weak core etc has caused all these lingering issues.

      I would have to see you move to see exactly what is causing the one sided rib flare. Have you changed your habits at all (sitting to one side more, etc)? Find a knowledgable physical therapist in your area and they can help you figure out what is going on :)

    I have a slight rib flare and my lower back looks usually bend outwards (literal C shape, some say it looks flattering and my bum is lifted up), but recently I've started doing Chloe Ting's workouts and I started to notice the slight rib flare that wasn't visible in the past/when I wasn't working out at all. Will working out worsen it? I've done core workouts, which I've read usually help with fixing the rib flare, and I don't go overboard with it, I just follow Chloe's programs, but I'm unsure if working out will help or worsen the case.

    • @CoreExerciseSolutions
      @CoreExerciseSolutions  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are specific things that you can do to work on the rib flare depending on what is causing it for you. If the core work you are doing is exacerbating the issue that is causing the rib flare it could potentially make it more apparent. It is hard to say for sure without seeing you move and getting more information.

    • @connorparsons8041

    Oh I have questions! I have been dealing with my left rib cage protruding for a year and has increasingly become more painful. The doctors have done a ton of tests all to show nothing. Ct scans, xrays, ultrasounds, labs, mammogram, lung function test. This hurts to lay down, sit down and sometimes standing. They tried PT it put me in ER from the pain it caused. They also did 2 injections of some numbing meds in my left shoulder blade. Did nothing for my ribs. No doctor has mentioned a rib flare, only saying yeah i feel it , it's your ribs lol
    I was in a major car wreck in 2012 that injured my chest from the seat belt and air bag Idk if that would cause it. But it did disable me so poor posture is definitely a problem as I am extremely limited to exercise. Currently they say only walk. Any ideas?

      Breathing properly to help mobilize your ribs can do wonders. Some exercises can help and sometimes you need a little manual therapy to help get really stubborn ribs unstuck. It can be different for every person what is needed so you can't just give one thing that will work for everyone.

    If I have rib flare all the time like when I’m laying does this mean I can’t fix it?

    So if I have a wide rib cage what muscles would be weak?

      I often find the external obliques are weaker with a wide angle.

      Sorry you are dealing with that. If it is causing you pain you should see your doctor and ask for a physical therapist referral so you can work through the issue.
