Pretty sure he's gone over it but that's not even the best Rudy/Alpha Investments story. I've been watching since there were only a few thousand subscribers. Everyone should go back and watch from the beginning to get the complete canon and overall most choice viewing/listening experience. This guy is a goldmine of stories and anecdotes about Magic, finance, and really, life in general. Rudy if you're reading this I love you.......dad.

Sad to see the Juxtaposition of the cap and mask. Cap used to be popular netting $25, now it's $3.09. Conversely the Mask wasn't that much in the past, now ... 3.56... hmm... thought it was much more.

Jester's cap was great, I was waiting for a Necropotence, shame we didn't get one. I remember when Iceage dropped and before the meta formed the first time I saw Necropotence I thought "THIS IS A GAME BREAKING CARD" and I quickly bought every copy I could find, people were selling them for like 1.50/2.00 partly because the meta wasn't formed yet, partly because iceage was EVERYWHERE and nothing was worth anything in the set when it dropped. I remember when WOC stopped printing ice age stores would sell boxes of it for like $35 because they bought way too much (the set was disappointing trash, so it never sold well, and everyone overbought it). Of course my speculation on necropotence didn't net a lot of money, as I said, there was too much cheap iceage out there to be worth much, but I did end up making couple hundred dollars when I sold my collection of them off at around $10 each (I think I had 50 or 60 of them)
Came for the box topper, stayed for the hairy arms.
Thank you for this. Probably my favorite set from Magic, mostly for pure nostalgia. Tried to collect a full set but never managed to, came close though. Awesome trip down memory lane!

Despotic scepter was used in the turbo stasis deck as a way to destroy your stasis EOT so you could untap and play another Stasis without giving an untap phase to the opponent.
I still have my stasis deck.. And my winter orb icy lock deck.. God those were the good old days.

@@zomb1622 Balance sac all your lands to zuran orb. And use your fellwar stones to tap everything they untap. Play two blue lands for counters and slowly Kill them with a vise and mishras. It was such a agonizing deck to play against. And the people that played it out as soon as you played your cane after they were locked they just gave up.
I played a ton of Turbo Stasis back in the day as well as other control type decks like Winter Orb and the original Mill(stone), still have my unlimited Icy Manipulators, Antiquities Millstones, revised Winter Orbs.. Never once did I play Despotic Scepter or even consider it. Blue bounce spells were far superior. Why waste a Stasis?

Foglio's.... the art was so fun. What's New from The Dragon is one of my favorite strips of all time.
My love for the Foglio's began in Homelands. Phil's comic "Girl Genius" is a must read as well.

I started in the end of the dark. And stopped after homeland's just came out.. I sold all my good cards to buy a 86 Chevy celebrity station wagon.. 875.00 and that thing was mint. Ugly as all hell had 12000 miles on it but it lasted me forever..

"Order of the White Shield" and "Knight of Stromgald" from Ice Age are functional reprints of the pump knights from Fallen Empires. (Order of Leitbur, and Order of the Ebon Hand)

pay 4 to play. pay x and tap to "store x mana for when you remove next", place spell card face up on ice cauldron, and put counter on ice cauldron. tap to remove charge counter add that mana you just paid ONLY to be able to cast spell placed on ice cauldron.

There's some pretty neat tricks you can do with it. The card stays castable in exile regardless of what happens to Ice Cauldron. So you could load up a fatty, put mana into your pool, cast a jokulhaups, and drop the fatty onto an empty board. Or load up a mind twist, wheel of fortune, wipe opponents hand.
Fyndhorn Elves was awesome back then cause you got to basically play 8 llanowar elves in standard, which was sooo sweet , type 2 back then. Awesome content Rudy !

Down memory lane I love it. I remember opening packs of ice age they were 3$ and revised were 2/5$ I was given 5$ each time we went to the store and so was my brother. A pack of dark was 6$ legends 15$ antiquities 20$ and Arabia nights 20$ once we saved up our money over a few weeks and opened a legends booster we got a sword of the Ages!!! I was around when chronicals came out and people were freaking out over the reprints but then saw that all the best cards were passed over lol.

Zuran Orb was arguably the most underrated card from Ice Age. It created a non-lotus/mox first turn fireball kill scenario.
Fastbond, Zuran Orb, Channel, Fireball( I preferred Kaervek's Torch when Mirage came out), 1x mountain and 3x forests.
Lay the first forest and tap it to cast Fastbond and lay your 0 cost Zuran Orb. Sacrifice 3 life (you're at 17 now) and lay the remaining forests and mountain. Tap them for your mana and sacrifice the spent lands for +8 life( back up to 25 life) and use the 2 green mana in your mana pool to cast Channel and sacrifice 20 life into colorless mana (you're at 5 remaining life) and use the 1 red mana and 20 colorless mana to cast Fireball for 20 damage on your opponent. Killing them in one shot.
It was a very lucky starting hand and draw to get this combo off, but I have pulled this combo off dozens of times by the third turn on many people back in the day. Zuran Orb was just a fast way to regain life for Channel in an all out attack. I liked Kaervek's Torch because the interrupts targeting it have a +2 colorless casting cost prevented blue decks from stopping you until their 3rd turn even if they had hydro/blue elemental blast. Most players that packed counter spells only ever kept 2 lands untapped anyway so they'd just fizzle their cast.
I had Taigas, Mogg Hollows, Tinder Walls and 5 mountains in my green deck with Llanowar & Fyndhorn Elves just so I could throw Fireballs, Torches, Lightning Bolts and just have a massive amount of mana production in a few turns to keep casting damage at my opponent.
Also, side note on the Meteor Shower. That card was ridiculously over powered with an infinite mana combo. It literally would wipe out an entire table in one turn if there wasn't a Nevinyrral's Disk or someone with an interrupt to stop that player's cast/turn. I ran into that in a local tournament once in 96 or 97.

Super cool booster opening. Score on some of the dual lands! Was really hoping to see the jester rares, maybe even a blinking spirit! This set was pretty unique not one repeat rare, hell i don't even think there was a repeat uncommon in this box!

My first Magic cards ever were from a starter deck box thingy of Ice Age. I was just a boy (10-ish) and didn't even know what Magic was at the time, but I had to have that pale blue box of cards with the neat (mana) symbols on it. There was even a little rules booklet inside - and a Lhurgoyf!

Ice Age is still my favorite set, started playing around 4th Edition, so many cool cards in IA, amazing artwork. Miss those days.
I started playing in Revised, but I will always remember Ice Age as my favorite set. I just loved all the art, and the snow covered lands were amazing. Shame that there isnt more value in the set, maybe one day itll make splash

the delivery on the stone hands got a sensible chuckle out of me.
Zuran Orb goes nicely with Desolation Angel, tapout to cast Angel then sac lands to Orb before she lands. If you have Sanguine Bond in play, you also do 2dd for every land sacked.
About a 75 dollar box. Amazing how commons and uncommons can out in so much work
I play ed a Blue-White Stomping Wall Deck back in the Days, because after couple of years the Enchantment "Walls can attack" made the Illusionary Walls Brutal Strong!
I play with Zuron Orb in my lands edh deck, if you have 9 Mana you float all of it, sac your lands cast sunder bouncing everyone's lands the cast splendid Reclaimation to put all of yours back in play, love that card!

Oh, Ice Cauldron! Think about it this way: You pay for a spell in your hand, tap Ice Cauldron (but only if you haven't used it yet), put the card from your hand onto Ice Cauldron and put a counter on it. Then? You can tap Ice Cauldron to play that card. You're just putting a spell on layaway for all to see.
I could see some weird timing things you could pull off with that, since you could cast non-instant spells at instant speed. But, that's a lot of jank to get a maybe and incredibly obvious side benefit.

Ahh Ice Age, the expansion that got me started. And i still love the counterspell from that set the best.
I used Despotic to counter 'can not be regenerated' murder spells back then. Interrupt speed bury the creature they target, regen, terror is wasted. Ten year old me had no idea I was being smart.
Speaking of learning card value later in life. I used to hate prismatic ward, it was always meh to me. Then I was introduced to Wall of Glare.
Compared to 2023, 2019 Rudy seemed to have WAY more fun commenting on openings. Make Rudy Fun Again!

Zuran orb kept me alive in a few tournaments and made me hold my life up till i could kill - ofcourse , late game. beside the damage lands, necromancy and jesters cap were my favs
This was a set where it was best to buy starter decks just due to the snow-covered lands. Plus, if I recall correctly, the price increase made it so they were by far the better bang for the buck. Also a case would leave you 3 cards short of 3 sets -- 360 rares were in a case and you needed 363 rares for 3 sets. They were NOT in true random order, so i if you bought sequential cases you were set (pun intended). The challenge was getting the sequential cases, but buying a pallet solved that issue. This was true through at least the Urza block. After the Hasbro takeover, I have no idea if that was still true.
those cumulative upkeep cards were good with time elemental; there were some nice decks built around time elemental once upon a time (stasis is obvious, but they worked really well with most of the cumulative upkeep cards, MTG was making at the time, this was back before blink/return from graveyard/play effects were anywhere near as common as they are now)
zuron orb was the key piece to "balance" based decks, and the reason why balance got banned/restricted. I actually placed in the top 4 in a regional thanks to this strategy running a pure white/artifact weenie/crusade deck. the strategy was, you'd play a white weenie with Mishra factories and the like, likely running with a few board wipers like wrath of god, you'd get the board where you want it, and your hand basically empty, and cast balance. The idea being withCrusade in play your weenies will be unstoppable no matter how few you're left with, meanwhile you emptied your hand and your opponents hand, and cleaned out all the lands from the board, locking the game in place with you with the ultimate advantage, it got even more disgusting if you would sword to plowshares your own creatures in order to force the foe to sacrifice his creatures to the balance. It was pretty gross how it would work. There were some devastating type 1 tournament builds around balance and zuron orb as well, typically black/white decks which were based on hand death and racks, maybe using necropotence. Furthermore, ZuronOrb/Balance was the only meta at the time that could match and/or beat Necropotence in type 2 tournaments. Necropotence was also banned/restricted for a time, along with balance and zuron orb.

I remember buying Fallen Empires ? and Ice Age from my local hobby shop as a kid! I only spent a few years collection the cards, got out of them when I got into middle school and have no idea what happened to all my cards.

Mystic Remora is valued at around USD 2-3. I think it will rise sometime this year or next. It's godlike in commander. It gets you lots of card draw.

ahhh magic. Firs time I played was in woodwork class in 94 or 95... Smoked some cones, went to class and my friend showed me how to play. I always remember being stoned while playing and this guy had his finger ripped off by a router, damn that was unreal.
Man, this set brings back memories of how absolutely complicated this game was back in 1995. I used to argue with my brother on rules before the damn internet helped us understand cards. Can’t believe just how enormous this set was! I don’t think he opened any duplicate uncommons!
Despotic Scepter (along with the Zuran Orb) was one of the cards that made Turbo Stasis work. You could pop your Stasis or Winter Orb with Scepter when you want to get something going and use recall, feldon's cane, or boomerang to get em back. Screw Necropotence and Black Summer (1996), damn control decks. Without Ice Age, we would still be using big ass creatures like Craw Giant and Shivan Dragon instead of Combos and Control.. back then big creatures were the winning cards.

Despotic Scepter was useful to deal with Control Magic effect decks. Far too narrow overall granted, but it was neat at the time.
yep, you saw it in some blue decks, stasis mainly, some black decks with nasty upkeep cards, actually black decks tended to like it to feed their graveyard effects.

Never even knew the card existed, but did anyone else notice the first sentence in the ability of the last rare. Order of the sacred torch. tap and pay 1 life to "destroy target black spell". LOL. While your dark ritual is on the stack, i'm just going to go ahead and tap this and say nope! Ahhh the good old days of rule ambiguity. Doing what you want with cards so that they tailor to however you read them. It couldn't say "counter" it had to say "destroy". I really don't see how you could destroy a instant or sorcery, but it says what it says :-)
I used to have a disenchant deck XD I should have thrown in some blue counterspells just to get people even more PO XD.
Back in the day when I could buy Ice Age, the shop offered to open a new booster and you could pick a new card out of that, if you had a miscut card... wish I has saved all those miscuts.....
Rudy just passing over all the Mystic Remoras like they are trash. It's a common worth more than most the Rares
Hey tell me if I'm wrong here, but Ice Cauldron ability is basically that you can pay the cost of a spell and put it on that card then after a turn or after it untaps you can cast that spell at anytime by tapping that Artifact and removing the counter. So, essentially it give that spell Flash and can be played anytime after Ice Cauldron untaps, right?

How can you not understand the power of Zuran Orb??? You play Balance and Land Tax and sac all your lands for life to counteract the loss of life from the Dingus Egg and your opponents all die and have no lands and if they play one land you get to activate Land Tax.
Too bad actually using those cards in a paper deck, costs a million dollars nowadays. Using that combo effectively, costs even more haha
