      @@andrewwhite7724 Not trying to argue with you, but.....
      Old Jack McNamara set up my first ARB diff locker and he criticised that swearing about ARB not having correct shim thickness. I recieved the same bad language back then as they have on their videos. Back then McNamara was only making and selling lockers and axles for landrovers and other models (not Nissan). I am not doubting McNamara's knowledge or expertise but if you want a gobful of swear words as to why you did not buy his locker then go there (or just watch the videos) and you will feel belittled by him, but aside from that I would recommend that if you want a diff set up then take it to him. Work is great, verbal customer service is not.
      I have had a ARB air locker(rear of landcruiser), a lokka and now a e-locker (front of patrols) and a factory rear locker in the GU (now the vacuum in that is crap).
      I have seen others videos and read comments on the internet where they critcise the elocker etc, but like a lot of people who post comments on the net they don't have actual experience, they just tell you what they have read or seen elsewhere or about what a 'mate' told them. I am not suggesting your are not informed, but unless you can tell me your real life experience then I don't need your recommendation. Re the locking to unlocking if you reverse is about 1/4 of a wheel turn and if under load then it does not unlock; personally though locked in I have never had to reverse. If a vehicle has a locker then the difference is you are less likely to have to flog your 4WD to get it moving as the added traction reduces the risk of damage. Most damage is caused to CVs when the vehicle axle is locked and you land a wheel too hard on the ground if it is trying to gain traction.
      The elocker they show appears to be from a rear diff from a Patrol and I am suspecting from the size it is the larger h260 diff and not the H233b, probably why the diff carrier looks smaller within the ring gear. Where you also have to BE CAREFUL on Nevilles comments is where he criticises the size comparrison of the eaton with the other carrier in the video, you have to remember 1/. It is a rear carrier from the rear of a landcruiser & 2/. It is a LSD so it has to be bigger as it has to contain the clutch plates so obviously the case is larger as it has clutch plates and gears inside. Therefore BE CAREFUL on what they are stating or what you are trying to repeat.
      BTW, I missed which bit was broken, (I don't think it was), as did someone else who has a eaton/harrop mentioned on McNAMARAs video.
      After watching Nevilles videos tell me which diff cetnre or diff locker they don't criticise.
      Go watch the HARROP video on the elocker and they may tell you another story.
      The elocker is good. Anyway go watch my videos as I need the extra .05 cents #havacrack Regards, Mick

    At the end of your video, you say that your 80 was only able to lock the rear, what year is it? I have a 1996 fjz80 that’s all time 4wd with a cdl with no front or rear lockers. You have another video with a Bundera explaining when and how to use the lockers. What locker set up do you recommend for my truck so that I’m able to select rear only or front only or all as you suggest in this video and the other, because I’m assuming you are not using the factory locker harness or ecu? I’ve seen some other threads for adding e lockers and using the factory harness but it only allows for rear only or front and rear, not front only.
    Great channel and hope to hear from you soon.

    • @MadMatt4WD
      @MadMatt4WD  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey Ryan, A number of reasons in my opinion. 1. A workshop mechanic who is about to do one for the first time. 2. A mechanic like me who is doing his own for the first time. 3. A hobbiest who has a unit out of warranty and is going to overhaul it and wants some familiarity. 4.Someone who is looking to buy one new and just wants to know how it goes together for their research on the product.

    • @SeriousSchitt
      @SeriousSchitt 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Ryan bridges: Don't be afraid to tackle it. I'm just a hobbiest who'd virtually never seen inside a diff (not totally true but I'm no mechanic) yet did both my diffs with E-Lockers in my 2003 Hilux for the first time.
      Some pointers:
      Regarding the movement of the ring with the two tabs, it says to allow 2mm of lateral movement or it "WILL" lead to failure, I did mine with no, or next to no, play at all.
      Another thing I did potentially wrong was I used blue thread lock Loctite instead of red.
      When looking for a place to drill your grommet hole drill it on top of the diff (naturally enough) and as close to the gasket flange as practicable, keeping an eye not to put it or the wiring in the road of internal moving parts such as crown wheel. On the front diff I made the mistake of drilling down a wee ways from the flange, and as Matt says it's an incredible effort getting the grommet through the hole, so much so that I damaged my grommet so badly that it certainly won't take another install, that's for sure! When it came to the rear diff, I was wiser by then and drilled my hole where the grommet was easier to install... up nearer the flange!
      The rear diff I also swapped out my pinion shaft (with Nitro) and changed to a Nitro crown wheel, as I had to change the ratio, for I went from 30" tires to 35's.
      All that said, whilst I'm not an every day wheeler, both diffs/lockers have performed flawlessly since day one, that was 4 years ago and they're well out of warranty now anyway. Oh, I'd better not forget, the "biggest" thing that helped me was, I managed to get hold of the 'proper' Toyota workshop manual as well as the E-Locker instructions, without that, no matter how many 'specialized' tools I think I've got, I 'personally' would 'NEVER' have been able to install them! Good luck.
