Last night, I put on the movie to be background noise to go to sleep. But I got caught up on some dailies on my phone and by time I finally was passing out, the scene with the brother happened and it was 3am almost exactly and I cursed out loud "now I gotta stay up and FINISH THIS?!" lmao
Also, for anyone that knows or relates or doesn't. When your brain no longer receives oxygen, you have about a minute and under 2 minutes before that lack of oxygen starts to destroy your brain. I know this personally because I have 2 TBIs, 3 sections of my brain no longer receive oxygen, meaning they are essentially dead.(I'm actually not supposed to he as functional as I am and 1 more will kill me or permanent vegetative state.) This lends the credence that this movie is a straight up homage to drug use. I have dead friends from it and I've never and never will be someone into drugs. After my accident they wanted me of hard pain killers I told them I'd rather just suffer and I did. Show this movie to a recovering heroin addict, it's basically a love letter to the horrors of drugs. The whole situation of Miya being close to the younger brother makes sense as addiction will destroy the most vulnerable attached to you, first. The way the mom enabled the entire time and took no accountability for tragedy. The way the friend who's life seemed in order refused to give hard truths out of fear of telling her friend what they had to hear rather than what they wanted. This entire movie is an allegory to the true damages of drug addiction. I can make it a bit more real. The ritual of grabbing the hand and allowing it to let you in, is how a lot of addicts romanticize their use, what happened on or off or direct or proximity. Addicts romanticize their use, hence why they write 'love letters' to their drugs. Addicts will sit sround and romanticize how their friends perished and then laugh at the good times of past while the present is crumbling, through the drugs. I enjoyed this movie because of the end. Because, through the deaths of the Addicts, their memories are kept alive when Addicts still breathing romanticize their deaths. Unable to fully move on because so many continuously become trapped in the horrors of their addictions. When your brain is slept for over 90 seconds, irreversible brain damage is done. I live on a "50 first dates" schedule. I have to have shit sround my apartment to remind me of shit I did yesterday. This is a major reason I have never wanted or had the urge to do drugs lmao. You can SLCPunk yourself real fast.
I think that was her dad. Time is moving quicker for her now dead, and her dad probably didn't survive. I think she saw him go into the elevator, metaphorically and literally going up to heaven while she's stuck wandering the earth.
One theory that I love is that the second spirit Mia sees, the larger woman who looks like she drowned (the same one Mia "let in" for more than 90 seconds), is the spirit impersonating her mom. You may notice in the sound design that every time her mom comes on screen, there are weird bubbles and water sounds, and her mom gets more and more wet and grotesque as the movie goes on! Yuck
OH! I LOVE THAT AND IT TOTALLY MAKES SENSE - I knew that second spirit was still kicking around but I wasn't thinking about the bubbles even though I heard it!
That makes so much sense! I was wondering why the mother was so wet near the end, when her death wasn’t with water. Also the rain and thunder happening right after the first party possession. When Mia is sitting on the couch and blue is cascading over her. Node to the underwater/drowning spirit still present
Did anyone else feel terrible for the dad? He was so lonely through the whole movie, i get that she was coping in her own way but man he just wanted to connect with her :(
Felt absolutely terrible for the Dad. Not only is he a widower due to intentional suicide, the only person he can bond with over that is pushing him away.
Yeah, he definitely got the raw end of the deal. Dead wife, dead (and from his POV insane) daughter, scissored in the neck, and also has to be the one to clean up his own pools of blood cause everyone else is too dead to do it.
Yeah I think if we’re looking through the lens of this movie being a metaphor for addiction it’s supposed to be a representation of people using drugs to escape their grief and those who choose not to use the escape are forced to suffer more because they have to work twice as hard to heal alone/without the help or support their loved ones that chose to be addicts
Except the fact that he kept his wife's suicide a secret from her while she was clearly in denial of the blatant truth kept a wedge between them. He obviously wanted to connect with her but that lie separated them (even if he thought he was doing the right thing) and there's no indication of him doing anything more to support her like suggesting counselling or therapy together.
Only reason I still went to see this after being so hyped for it ever since praise from the festivals was coming out! Whoever is in management at A24 is awesome
Something that people seems to hate hearing……. A24 actually makes great movies and props up the little guy and always has in my personal experience. I don’t care about crap writers who already make too much money for crap content. These people deserve the world for making something fresh, creative, and actually scary.
@@Smurg91 and they’ll always be working class due to the fact their industry is based on the consumer almost entirely. The strike isn’t for them but for the wealthy who would and have been most impacted because Disney is failing and so is Hollywood. The biggest stars are crying over money when the little guy is about to be homeless. I have no sympathy for anyone but the little guy being taken for a ride by the fatcats who already don’t hire them.
@@elwinMMAbut that actually makes it a good company tho. They watched the movie and loved what they had done with it and thought, let's give it a chance. They didn't change a thing. And it worked. Now, I'm also excited for their project on Backrooms, the fact that they hired that teenager that made backrooms relevant in the media is both risky and exciting. A24 is that company I will still support after the whole strike mess.
!!! SPOILERS BELOW !!! Another reason the ending hit so hard to me was that, as I realized what was going on, and then seeing the glowing light and the hand, I was holding out the SLIGHTEST bit of hope that maybe it was Daniel or someone she knew trying to contact her. But then you see it’s just this party going on in a different country, and you realize she’s just going to be trapped into this forever. It’s so bleak and depressing, I love it.
I keep wondering with the spirits that are contacted throughout the movie if they’re actually the spirits of real people or some demon disguising itself, but with that ending and the world we saw Riley in, I think they’re real people who have become so twisted and corrupted by the spirit world that they become altered against their will to the point of no longer having their former humanity. This movie just has so many layers of brutality stacked one on top of the other oof…
Last night, I put on the movie to be background noise to go to sleep. But I got caught up on some dailies on my phone and by time I finally was passing out, the scene with the brother happened and it was 3am almost exactly and I cursed out loud "now I gotta stay up and FINISH THIS?!" lmao
One other thing that surprised me about the ending is how the movie subverts the troupe of "group of teens getting picked off one by one in a horror movie." I was expecting this to be like most possession movies where everyone gets fucked by the end but by the middle or so it became more clearly a personal story about Mia and her struggles so while the ending is very... unfortunate for Mia, I was really happy that Jade and her family make it out fine. Mia's dad however is probably living his worst nightmare.
YES! That's exactly it - it's really that character progression, while still committing to such a mmeaannn ending that gives this such an impact in my opinion
I also liked the fact that the teens knew that the hand was haunted. They weren't clueless like in many horror movies. They just were stupid and thought they could fuck around with spirits. A great allegory for drugs.
@@ksmooth1973dude all the actors did a great job. They all felt like teens trying to fit in or seem cool and having unique characterization in a realistic way
the first ghost she met was drowned, all swollen and liquidy, then her mom the entire time was liquidy and wet, she was always the first ghost who she let in for 91 seconds
I actually found this movie refreshing. It doesn't drag on or move too fast. I was surprised by the ending. Probably my favorite horror movie of the year.
Same! I felt like the movie was more sad than scary. And don't get me wrong it got me a few times but I like the thru line of Mia dealing (or not really dealing) with the death of her mom. She wanted to believe so bad that her mom didn't end herself that a ghost in her mom's image dragged her into insanity.
I'll say that the fact the movie keeps going is more of a surprise than the "real kicker". Like, the instant you realize the movie is not over yet and instead continuing, you already know what ending it'll lead to, so it's not really the biggest "surprise" at that point.
@@rvckyym K, maybe don't full-on spoil when you see other people and the person in the video avoiding spoilers? I guessed something else, which should be REALLY apparent, given the way I phrased it. Because I certainly didn't say "I knew as the movie started that x was gonna happen".
you know how in most possession movies they have a bunch of mediocre actors and only one good one and that actor is always the one who has to be possessed? i loved how this one had multiple possessions so everyone had to be good. i loved the montage of them with the hand because it was so impressive seeing all these actors just going all in to give a really intense performance!
One thing that made the scene where she stabs her dad so tragic to me is how traumatizing it would have been for him. In the past, he had to break down the door to get his wife out, too late to help her. Then after he reads his daughter the note, she locks herself in her room, and he has to break down the door again and finds her lying seemingly dead. It's his worst nightmare playing out in front of him again, and it ends just as badly, but in a different way.
*SPOILERS* I love how hands in this movie tie into the theme of connection. Mia's previous "relationship" was holding hands with Danny. Even as weak of a connection as that is, it's still something she thinks about and wants. Her mom's fingers having been damaged while trying to get out of the room also appear on her at the end when she's trying to reach out to her loved ones. Then, of course, there's the actual hand in the movie. It's the most basic contact when meeting people, to take their hand, and this is a great way to twist it into something perverse. In trying to escape the negative feelings, she's made this unwilling connection to these spirits that ends up consuming her.
Yeah I loved this! I’m the camera focused on Mia’s hands so much throughout the film in such a subtle way. I loved how she was peeling her nail polish off slowly as the movie went on.
late but just came back to this after watching the move and great catch! Also after she dies and can't see her reflection, she looks at her hands and her hands are mangled and broken which I think reflects her ability to connect with others.
The way my friend and I understood the dad in the hospital scene was that that was the dad's spirit and when he gets to the elevator he goes up so that signifies him going to heaven meanwhile his daughter is trapped in limbo
I thought that might be it but they made the point to show us he was still alive so I landed more on 'malicious spirits emotionally manipulating her one last time to cross over into their personal hellscape'
This was how I took it initially, as well. However, there was one detail that has me questioning this take: as the elevator doors close, we get a quick look at the father's face, and it appears completely void of actual features. No eyes, nose, mouth, nothing. Now I'm bouncing back and forth on what it meant.
I'm thinking it's less metaphorical than literal that it's just a way to show her father and Riley survived. her father was in the hospital to pick up Mia, so to speak.
I really viewed the scene where she sees her father and riley leave the hospital as her experiencing the afterlife (sort of like the 'your hell is your worst nightmare') particularly because it was after she died and before she was the spirit being spoken to
Talk To Me is a textbook tragedy. Addiction, anxiety, trauma, and some aspects of grief are all present, but the movie's about the downfall of Mia. Danny and Michael Philippou's energy and creativity are pure genius. The script was air-tight. The casting was brilliant. The cinematography was excellent, but the sound design was next level. We just watched a classic, and people will be talking about this film forever.
Yes! One thing you mentioned that I wish more people talked about was the beautiful sound design! When I get overwhelmed and turn into a weenie while watching horror movies I normally cover my eyes, but with this movie I found myself covering my ears! Lol it was a phenomenal experience.
@@demmigarcia1453 The sound design of Friedkin's The Exorcist affected people on a visceral level. I just saw Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on The Exorcist, and Friedkin spoke at length about the power of innovative sound design. That movie was revolutionary for its time, and Talk To Me is another groundbreaking film that took a page from Friedkin on sound direction. It hits you from all directions
The scene where everyone takes turns with the hand with the score alongside it was one of the best I’ve seen in a horror movie in a long time. It gave me chills ! Such a realistic take on how this would probably happen if people found this for real lmao
@@EmyN lmao are you not on tik Tok nowadays? Teenagers would a million percent do this. It’s also an allegory about drugs anyway so it’s the same vibe lol
I personally assumed that the dad survived and at the end it was supposed to signify him leaving the hospital without Mia as he would have been in the hospital when she died. Like time jumbling together. He’s in that last bit of literal light (aka, Alive) and she can’t follow. So he’s moving on and unable to help, and she’s trapped in a purgatory of her own creation. This furthers the addiction allegory imo.
@@entertainmentjunkieJade found Mia’s dad at the house. He was laying upright by the window with a hand to his neck wound. He was weak, but still alive and breathing
I'm an absolute wuss so I'm so glad I can watch TH-camrs I trust talk about movies and still feel like I can more or less enjoy the movie without getting scared or an awful tummy ache from violent scenes. 10/10 thank you.
Yep!! I enjoyed watching this one channel talk about movies until they started adding jump scare clips in the videos from the movies so I stopped watching. I’m glad I found Amanda’s channel instead!
I like that Mia's character arc is essentially what happens if you can't come to terms with losing a loved one. She spirals out of control, tries to seek solace in the euphoria the hand/seeing her "mom" gives her (not unlike people who spend loads of money on mediums trying to talk to their dead loved ones, on top of the drug allegory) and in the end she ends up dead, which, if her mom really did commit suicide, can be read as Mia succumbing to the same thing as her mom since the mom died of a drug overdose. There are so many layers to what the possession can symbolize UGH, so good.
Seeing Riley just try to hurt himself was just so gruesome, I had to look away a few times cause I just felt so BAD 😭. Besides that, I am so glad I saw this in theaters with a whole bunch of people. It was so creepy and gory but so much fun! PLEASE GO WATCH IT
The violence with Riley for me felt gratuitous. I felt that pushed a little too much and I’m not sure if I would have felt the same if it were an adult actor/character. I think they could have pulled the camera once or twice during scenes with his violence leaving us with the sound effects to disturb us and it would have been better. I may have been more sensitive to it, idk. Overall great film with an amazing ending and I’m so glad I saw it in theaters.
I usually don't get horrors but extreme self harm is genuinely horrifying to me, so those two scenes were hard to watch and I was hoping there wouldn't be another because I felt so bad for the character.
I saw it in theater too and honestly I haven’t turned my eyes away from a horror movie so much in a while. I think the fact I was expecting to see more of a spirit oriented kinda movie rather than a gruesome one played a lot. Also it actually saddened me that the only character I liked ended up like that.
The ending is so brutal even for a horror movie. I cant imagine the concept of forever and being a trapped soul forever must be one of the worst fates imaginable
I was just shook at the fact that the ending just clicked so well with her touching the hand and realizing that she is now stuck in that spirit world. And I wonder how she would possess the person that touch the hand? like would she try and warn those people or what she would say? What do y’all think?
@@Hamcheese-nk8ugI think their body gets worse depending on how they died, as if they had never been buried, for example, mia's "mother", she had the body of someone who drowned, and each time she appeared, her body was more decomposed, wetter and blistered, as if she were in water. I believe that Mia would get weirder and weirder, maybe with ants and bugs around her, because she "would still be" in the middle of the road, rotting.
My assumption here is that as time progresses a spirit slowly loses who they are or were when they were alive. So as time goes on instead of Mia being confused and helpless in this Limbo; her spirit becomes malicious like the others. Spirits who can’t or aren’t able to move on tend to range from sad entities unable to let go to angry ones who’s intent is to bring misery.
This movie was honestly sad. I felt bad for Mia grieving her mom since I relate but she wanted the closure. Then Riley being terrified yet still doing it and getting hurt.

I think it was the mom’s spirit talking through Riley in the beginning but when Mia put her hand over Riley’s on the embalmed hand the drowned ghost that stayed with her was able to influence Riley. We already know that they have much less control over this experience than they think they do, proven when the ghost girl lets Mia in, so maybe saying “I let you in” doesn’t just let in the one spirit you’re talking to but any spirit that is touching the hand
Completely agree! I was trying to figure out how the drowned spirit got to Riley if it was already in Mia, but it makes so much sense that it would be able to influence him once Mia was touching the hand again.
I read a theory that I loved. It said that her mom was actually always the watery bloated corpse from her first experience with the hand. Her mom died by overdose but yet the “moms” ghost is bloated with water sounds always. Which is another really cool layer
@@nagisamomoe2033 yes, that’s what the theory is, that it was never the mom, it was the water spirit taking on the shape of the mom to trick her but it couldn’t hide its own death of being a drowning victim

Had anyone ever seen that TedTalk about how the opposite of addiction is connection? This movie is definitely exploring this. Especially as Mia goes further down the hole, her friends start rejecting her instead of pulling her in, and she just gets sucked in more.

The sounds were so sharp in this movie. Like, at one point they are smacking each other with pillows and it sounds like they are filled with lead. It could have just been sound system issues in the theater, but the voices were definitely quieter than the rest of the sounds. Even the rain sounded so sharp.
While we're on the subject of how the people who make movies deserve to be treated well, I found this quote from an interview with the directors of Talk to Me really troubling: ["There were certain days where we'd asked Sophie to come to set not having slept," Danny revealed, with Michael comically cutting in to stress that it was Danny's request specifically. "She would come to set in like a bit of a fractured headspace."] That's dangerous. It isn't okay. We've seen actors nearly killed by lack of sleep, not even that long ago. Trust your actors to do their bloody job and stop making unsafe requests that you know they won't argue because you're in control of the production. Michael at least seems to get it. I'm glad this movie is getting a lot of attention, I'm glad to see fellow Australian creatives succeeding (especially fellow Aussie TH-camrs), A24 deserve good returns after agreeing to Union terms, but that kind of shit needs to be stopped and it's wild that everyone is either glossing over it or treating it as ingenious direction.

I don't know why but the body horror and "gore" got me more in this movie then any other before. Usually im smiling or laughing but something in this movie made me cringe and squirm in my seat. This movie was satisfying and felt like something new definitely recommend
For me it was how realistic it was, in that these were kids doing stupid things and facing the consequences. It’s one thing to see a 35 year old “teenager” get their face bashed in by a serial killer, it’s another to see an obvious child being maimed in their own home after doing something dangerous. The casting choices were phenomenal.
I think sound mixing had a lot to do with it. At least in the theater I saw it in tonight, the sound fx seemed more impactful/intense than most films. That definitely adds to the body horror aspect of things more than most realize
Yeah, I think it's due to the set up. It's a bunch of kids at a party doing something stupid. You understand Riley wanting to participate, to be like the cool kids, and it feels incredibly horrifying when shit hits the fan. It's no longer just teenagers fucking around having a good time, it's this younger kid getting brutalized. I think we've all had moments where things were going good, we're having fun and then it gets serious and you feel this kind of slow dread that follows you for hours/days afterwards. They tapped into that for me and cranked it to 11
@@aurorethebore I agree! Everything involving Riley freaked me out, as an older sister. The thought of them getting hurt at all, but especially in such a brutal way, when everyone was having a good time not that long ago, stayed with me almost a week after viewing the movie.
Mia should have asked Riley's mom for help. That woman killed a Nazgul in her younger days!! Rookie mistake not turning to the Shieldmaiden of Rohan in times of trouble. [For anyone who isn't a complete nerd, the mom was played by the lovely Miranda Otto aka Eowyn from the Lord of the Rings. Always happy to see her. 💜]
Interesting how in the beginning the brother uses scissors to stab his brother then Mia with her father both familial figures, like the spirits are both physically and symbolically are trying to “cut” their hosts ties to the living world
i thought the same!! after seeing the movie I brought this up and my friend corrected me saying the beginning scene had a knife instead, but neither of us have rewatched it yet so im not sure who is remembering it right lol
It’s definitely a knife in the first scene (I just saw it like an hour ago) the knife is set up immediately with the girl cutting vegetables and the sound of the knife cutting is over exaggerated to point attention to it and I’m pretty sure the same sound is used to cue the knife was picked up right before the brother was stabbed
As someone with psychosis that likes to watch spoilers (because I love horror but not enough to trigger an episode) thank you ao much for going into it and how the ending is. This is something I'd definitely love to watch but on a good day with some friends I trust to reality check me
So the way I saw the ending was that when she saw her dad, he was in limbo (since she stabbed him), by him leaving the elevator, it showed that he survived the near death experience.
I like that you can use different interpretations as to what happened to her father. Some people saw it as him leaving the hospital after her death and the door closing to the world of the living, leaving Mia in to remain in this empty, dark void. When I fiirst watched the movie I felt the father must have succumbed to his wounds in the end and, while Mia got to watch the other patients in the ward go home with their loved ones, she had to watch him move on to the afterlife/peace. The world around her turns darker and the light of the elevator is the only thing left, her father steps into that light and the door closes behind him. Denying Mia the same peace he found and contrasting where souls are supposed to go, to where she ended up: a purgatory with no way out but to hope for a candlelight to to draw her in.
Thank you for supporting Australian films too, I feel like we've come a long way in recent years, especially with horror which is awesome and I think Australia lends itself well to the genre.
***SPOILERS*** I do think the very first spirit Riley saw was actually Mia's mom. He talks like the mom for awhile and then goes back to seizure/gurgling before becoming violent and it felt to me like a second spirit (or maybe something even worse) forced the mom out and took over.
I think that could have been the spirit trying to manipulate Mia even more via Riley’s possession since she had already “let it in” too long it had some sort of bond with her.
@@thugtrippin See, I agree with the original comment. The first spirit in Riley is apologizing for hurting her and (in a way) taking accountability for the harm she unintentionally caused trying to escape her own pain. She also calls her by her specific nickname that the other spirit doesn’t use. The malicious spirit had no connection to Riley and wasn’t able to take over until after the mom had been there over 90 seconds. Then she was kicked out and replaced by someone/something imitating her to manipulate Mia.
@@aurorethebore you explained it better than me, haha. I want to watch the movie again because there are a lot of audio-cues that the malicious spirit was the drowned woman that Mia first saw in her first time, and I *think* Mia was still touching Riley when the second spirit takes over so I wonder if it, like, transferred? Like the hand establishes that touch is important to this process so I wonder if Mia having her hand on Riley's arm facilitated it. But I don't remember well enough to be sure.
@@jessesinclair4734 I was thinking the same thing and someone brought that up too. Hands are such a big motif in the movie and they made the point to zoom in on her hand when she was touching Riley and the embalmed hand. That’s when things started going downhill. So I think that definitely had something to do with it.
@@aurorethebore it's such a credit to the film makers that they added such details in and never ruined it with a tedious exposition dump. Even if this particular theory of ours is wrong, I feel like they definitely had an idea of how it all worked and left clues for us to find.
Don't watch horror movies, but the ending makes me think that the only spirits you can see with the hand is the spirits that are killed by it, so her mother was never there to begin with..
Wrong remember that’s not the lil girl.. The lil girl help her see the not all spirit bad..This movie got meaning killing yourself means you gave yourself too the devil.. This movie was all about pain and suffering too the point the devil loves too break us.. She was suffering missing her mom and had no other family
Saw this yesterday & I loved it. The scene with Riley was so brutal and disturbing I had to look away. I lost patience with Mia when she allowed Riley to go over the time because she wanted to talk to her mother. It's tragic that she ended up in purgatory because of her grief.
18:59 also, on this moment: I’m obsessed with Riley’s line read. “I let *you* in.” It’s this slight emphasis on the “you” that definitely means he thinks he recognizes the spirit, but yeah, I think it’s just the demons messing around with them both
I saw this two days ago. That first scene with Riley…it was so jarring, in a good way, the sound and suddenness of it really made it even more impactful. That scene made me feel deeply uncomfortable and horrified. It was definitely one of the better horror movies I have seen.
Thank you for not judging those of us who need to know what to expect in the horror genre! I have such bad C-PTSD that not knowing what's coming in horror triggers an awful state of uncontrollable distress that actually makes my heart start hurting so content creators like you are my (and anyone like me's) safe window into that scene
I personally think Jade pushed her. Not necessarily intending to kill her, just trying to protect Riley. I don't think she jumped because I definitely didn't get her getting a moment of clarity. And I don't think the spirit pushed her because unless they were actively possessed, the kids weren't physically affected by the spirits.
yeah you’re right about the spirit not pushing her but also it was the spirit that made her do it by confusing her like the way the spirit confused her when killing her dad
It was a pretty small moment, just a slight change in her facial expression when the 'Mum' says "then we'll have him forever". It's probably easy to miss, but it made me certain that she wasn't going to push Riley
I think the 'mum' said something like 'and then we'll have him' and it might have given Mia that moment of realisation that this wasn't her mother at all and she did jump. That was my interpretation anyway!
Just saw it and before the movie there was like 3 separate drug PSAs. Thought it was really weird at the time lol. I wasn’t surprised by the ending but it was very sad. I also liked how despite everyone using the hand over and over again, Mia was the only one who got addicted. It’s a very real depiction of addiction and how even using drugs once recreationally at a party can lead you down the worst path. But the movie does it with such nuisance and grace that those dumb tobacco commercials wish they could have. I also like how the teens spoke like real teens and weren’t boomerified.
I saw an advanced screening and thought it was a great flick. It's been forever since a horror movie scared me and this one didn't, but it did stick with me and that it is more than I've had happen in years. The whole audience audibly gasped four different times, and nervously laughed once. A+
To me I was thinking that the hand that the guys had at the end that pulled her out of the hospital was the OTHER hand. They said earlier in the movie that there might be two hands out in the world
I love how Amanda knows where people's priorities lie: THE DOG IS FINE, DON'T WORRY. Clicking off before the spoilers, am convinced! Love that this was made by youtubers with integrity regarding where and who they wanted to shoot it with, gotta respect that. Plus the fact that A24 agreed to the union terms, that actually makes this a genuinely guilt-free watch that I want to support. Even if it turns out not to be my thing, I won't feel like it was a waste of money, these kind of projects deserve to be supported!
I thought I was being a lil baby when I had to shut my eyes at one point (some of Riley's stuff I just couldn't hang) while by myself in the theatre. I remember thinking how I wanted it to be over and also go on forever because of how uncomfortable I was. This is one of the best movies I've seen this year and that ending shot was amaaaaazing. Like the ending for Mia I saw coming but the explicit scenes at the end shocked the hell out of me. ALSO I remember thinking immediately how they were all obviously going to die because it's a possession movie and I'm so glad they subverted those tropes completely.
Idk if anyone paid enough attention at the end of the movie but the kids we fallowed had the left hand When Mia is a spirit and the other guy says “talk to me” I think she used her right hand meaning that we’re getting a glimpse of where the other hand is and honestly that’s dope If they did another movie based on the other hand and built on top of what’s already there in a way that was like the spirits claimed by the right hand can be communed with threw the left hand and vise versa and how each hand respectfully warps and twists the souls they take in different ways that could be cool and maybe even a way to brake the curse could be getting both hands and doing the ritual at the same time and u speak to the psychic or satanist who’s hands they were and that’s the final confrontation I’m only saying this because I loved the movie and it gave me something to think about and I enjoy thinking about this stuff 100% just a thought I was having fun with
the simultaneous use of both hands has to happen in the sequel! If they were to bring the social media aspect even further, one thing they could do is like have a famous Twitch streamer use one hand and reach out to their audience to find the other hand!
Thank you for the animal warnings! I was legitimately concerned about what might happen to that kangaroo from the trailer … so, it’s very nice to be prepared.
I'm so glad they kept their vision for the movie! You know a big America movie budget would have 1. Not let them keep the lead actor they had, and she was amazing! And 2. Not let them keep that ending, which genuinely shocked me.
one of the guys on the weekly planet called this film talk to the hand and now thats locked in my brain and no matter how many times i see or hear the right title it doesnt stick
[Spoiler] . . . . The ending with the dad walking into the elevator while the lights were shutting off and Mia is trying to catch up... that really hurt. That feeling of hopelessness is more terrifying than any gore in the movie. That ending made sense though, with the choices that Mia made, she wasn't getting out of this alive.
I am not lying and i was in my dorm alone watching this at 23:52 I had a power cut. When I tell you I screamed, I screamed and I am a non believer. God.
I see support for labour movement, I give a like. I mean, also it's Amanda the Jedi, but this is a take I'm so happy to see you talking openly about. Thanks, Amanda!
Thank you for the synopsis. I am the kind of person who can't horror movies because they get to into my head but I do like reading or hearing synopsis of them.
THE ENDING! I interpreted differently and even more brutal . Since we don’t actually see how Mia ended up hitting the car I think SHE jumped into oncoming traffic in order to be with the spirit who she thought was her mother. The “mom” spirit told her “do this to Riley and I’ll take care of him forever” so she was so desperate to be with her mom she took his place. When she was looking for her mother in the hospital she realized she was lied to. Or 2) the spirit completely took over Mia and when it touch her shoulders it fully possessed her and made her jump. Just like in Riley who wanted to hurt himself when gaining conscience and the boy in the beginning. (Edit: btw just want to say I took my grandma to watch this movie and she was such a good sport and probably the only elderly person there)
I consider Mia to weak of a character physically ,mentally and emotionally to throw herself into traffic. I believe that her friend pushed her to save her brother.
@@MrSasunaru101 Hm I disagree. My reading on the situation is that she realized that she was being manipulated and that she wasn’t going to be able to break from the addiction and by killing herself she was preventing herself from killing Riley because she maybe started to not believe he would be ok if she did kill him. Plus in her mind she had just killed her father. Her life is totally ruined at that point.
@@GalinaEv I mean she was surprised of where she was because like... she's never been dead before? lmao she's wondering where the hell is she and if this is where she will be eternally.
I watched this video, forgot most of it, watched the movie, then came back to just vehemently agree with every single point you made. Even knowing the ending was coming I was still completely hit in the face. It's the perfect amount of brutal and spooky, and I just want to give all those kids a fucking hug
the way the movie went on about her attachment to people and how she wants to be with her mom, it feels like she jumped into traffic because her “mom” was egging her on with “ill protect him”,”he’ll be safe with me”, etc. so she jumped in a last moment of selfishness because she wanted to be with her mom instead of letting riley go.
This film was fantastic. Something about Australian horror is just so intense, yet grounded. The Babadook is one of my favourite films, I can geek out all day.
I am so proud of aussie cinema we have so many talented people in the industry. I'm so glad to see this great movie get the recognition it deserves. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie.
The way that YT film makers break the boundaries and actually have something unique and serious to say compared to most of Hollywood movies is amazing ..it started strong with analog horror and now we have this. Awesome🔥
I read the synopsis and went to a full theatre. I haven't enjoyed such a visceral reaction from the entire theatre since Midsommar, god it was so good.
i’ve watched Talk To Me at least 10 times, and watched every youtube video about the movie i come across and i STILL get goosebumps when the ending is talked about. this movie just scratches my autism so fucking well. i love it
I went to see this a couple of days ago… was incredibly excited for it… but I had such a hard time with it. I’ve been looking forward to your video on it since then because I wanted to hear your perspective on it. It was so well done and there were so many refreshing concepts in it… I wanted so much to enjoy it, but I just couldn’t. But it’s entirely a me thing. I had no idea that it was going to shake up some of my own trauma so much! I watch a lot of horror and watch stuff I would’ve thought I’d be more sensitive to, without issue. I just didn’t see my reaction to this one coming. It was a total blindside. I left feeling bludgeoned. But it is so good and deserves the hype. I’m really glad to hear your full response because I feel like it’s very accurate, and it’s good to see someone appreciate it in a way I didn’t realize I couldn’t.
my interpretation about Mia's father on the hospital is pretty simple; after the stab and Jade's help he was there recovering and we saw at the end him leaving the hospital just like Jade's family. poor guy tho
I thought it’s a pretty good movie not scary but more suspenseful/unnerving . It’s always nice to see a different take on the paranormal genre. I just found out as well the movie had 20 mins cut from it which will be part of the directors cut on Blu-ray. 8/10 for me
I watched this two days ago. When I say the audience in my theatre was so engrossed in the movie I MEAN IT. The scene when Riley bashes his face in, EVERYONE in the audience began screaming, including myself. Its such a brutal and tense scene that me JUST describing it isnt enough. People NEED to watch this movie
My theory for the ending: I think her father did in fact die, but him walking into the elevator and leaving Mia was symbolism for him going to an after-life whereas Mia is trapped in with the hand or in limbo.
Strongly agree, this film was awesome!! Especially that sound design... even when they were just playing and smacking pillows, the sound was BRUTAL. Even when Mia hit her head over and over... no blood or gore in that scene, but... OUCH! The sound made me feel that. Amazingly visceral. Also, I'm not sure if you've heard of this, but there was a scene that was originally 2 minutes 30 seconds long. **SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T SEEN IT. IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT, JUST GO SEE THIS FILM! RACKARACKA PULLED IT OFF. DON'T SPOIL IT FOR YOURSELVES!** OK, 3, 2, 1, spoiler talk. ... The original hell vision sequence was so graphic and long that rackaracka had to really cut it down, but at the same time, they thought it was too gratuitous anyways. They said it showed a LOT more of hell, and maybe some stuff not involving Riley, and it was over 2 minutes. I personally feel it was the right call to cut it out/down. The other gore/visceral scenes had impact and weight, but 2 minutes and a half of hell torture does seem too far and "gore for gore's sake". Probably would've been NC-17 anyways. Danny in an interview said "maybe" they'll show that deleted scene someday, but if they did I might be hesitant to see it, from how it sounds they went too far. Curious what people think about that. Overall, it was a really great indie horror with great pacing, great characters, great performances, and a top-notch concept with intense, visceral impact. Hope Sophie Wilde becomes a star! And whatever rackaracka does next is a MUST see! 👍👍
Spoiler* That hell scene had me shaken to the core - I had seen a glimpse of a baby being eaten and that just had my heart sink for Riley *if that really was happening to him*, if there is an uncut scene, I doubt I'd be brave enough to stomach it - I had my throat constricted with popcorn
The scene you’re discussing was the most affecting scene for me, I agree that the impact (at least for me) would have been diminished had they not made the editing decisions they did.
I'm SO GLAD I took your advice, paused this video, and went to watch it instead of hearing the spoilers. DAMN. I can't believe that was their directorial debut, I look forward to their future work!
I am a person that needs to know the specifics of a horror movie before I will watch it myself! So thanks! I will probably watch this one with my horror movie loving friend.
Some people really can't handle suspense or tension and need to know what and generally when to anticipate things that might happen - I used to be the same way!
I'm someone who stays completely silent at the movies, but when I saw Reily's big scene, I screamed. I left the theater so uncomfortable but I love it, that's what I want from horror movies!
I saw this yesterday in a theater all alone. Normally that’s not the best for horror, but the ghostly lullaby sound design had me fully thinking that there was someone behind me singing, which was creepy given I knew I was alone. So yes, worth a watch in my opinion.
The hand in the movie being a left hand is symbolic of the Hand of Glory in most Mystic circles. It’s use in this way is a pretty interesting concept. Historical accounts of the left hand are that they are cut from witches that were hung.
An excellent cast and captivating lead draw you into a circle of grief, addiction, and solitude. After you leave the theater you are heavy and sad; the car is silent on the way home. They took possession and made it even more personal and raw and detached at the same time. My only pet peeve was the mom all of a sudden being like, “okay,” after being so protective the whole time. Excellent film! I can’t wait to see what the brothers do next.
That was a well crafted narative, full circular writing is one of my favorite styles. Ends how it starts Pale limbo light at the end of the tunnel..for everyone who dies or just hand folk specifically? That or just a mean, got eeem, this ain't heaven devil hand girl. Cold
As an Australian, I see a tonne of ads for this movie, and I was hella keen EXCEPT I was worried about the dog. Thanks for clarifying that the dog is okay ❤️
Major props to A24! This may reign as the top horror movie of 2023. Saw it twice back to back and there were some things I noticed more in the end the second watch. My goodness though Mia makes SO many poor choices!
This was the perfect horror film. I tend to hate horror films because usually when you take away the gore there's no story. This flick hits on all cylinders. Good horror films are rare, this one is very good. I just hope it doesn't turn into a shitty franchise. They nominated ten flicks a year for best picture. This deserves to be one of the ten. If Black Panther can be nominated, so can this film.
her relationship with her dad hit me HARD I completely ignored my father for many years (I had been told he was dangerous, and only learned they were manipulating me many years later), and then, suddenly, he died. So that feeling of never being able to talk to someone anymore when there's so many things unsaid? I get it And what you said about "imagine if he woke up in the hospital and his child had died" is exactly the thought I had that made me pull through a pretty dangerous situation as a kid. Didn't want him to go through that, even though we weren't talking

I know this personally because I have 2 TBIs, 3 sections of my brain no longer receive oxygen, meaning they are essentially dead.(I'm actually not supposed to he as functional as I am and 1 more will kill me or permanent vegetative state.)
This lends the credence that this movie is a straight up homage to drug use.
!!! I knew it
Agree
That makes so much sense! I was wondering why the mother was so wet near the end, when her death wasn’t with water. Also the rain and thunder happening right after the first party possession. When Mia is sitting on the couch and blue is cascading over her. Node to the underwater/drowning spirit still present
The sounds are terrifying !!
Did anyone else feel terrible for the dad? He was so lonely through the whole movie, i get that she was coping in her own way but man he just wanted to connect with her :(
Dude yes ! I felt like my dad died when he stabbed her I was so sad omg and I don’t even have a dad 😭
Also props to A24 for agreeing to the unions terms!
@@vikkidonn the vast majority of WGA writers are working class, not wealthy. Solidarity forever!
@@Smurg91 and they’ll always be working class due to the fact their industry is based on the consumer almost entirely. this movie’s use of social media was also really refreshing bc it didn’t feel like a sixty year old just going “phone bad! phone scary!”
Right??! And no "screen montages" of videos getting shared, comments being posted, the number of likes multiplying every second 🤣
why am i not surprised that A24 insantly was like " yeah we'll give the writers and actors what they want" like A24 stays winning.
A24 bought the movie at a film festival. It was a complete product.

Exactly really wonder if Mia will come to terms with what she did and that the spirit tricked her out living😂😢😢
@@adanrodriguez9140Same thoughts. Such a fun movie
This movie reminded me of the skeleton key. Such a sad and depressing ending knowing they’ll be stuck there forever with no way out 😭

They should have been picked off for bad acting lmao

There were some people talking in the theater, but trust me, everyone shut up when she grabbed the hand for the first time.
More of a drama with a little bit of scare
you know how in most possession movies they have a bunch of mediocre actors and only one good one and that actor is always the one who has to be possessed? i loved how this one had multiple possessions so everyone had to be good. i loved the montage of them with the hand because it was so impressive seeing all these actors just going all in to give a really intense performance!
That montage lives in my head rent free. It was too good
@@money1137yeaah when mia sing le foule 🔥
One thing that made the scene where she stabs her dad so tragic to me is how traumatizing it would have been for him. In the past, he had to break down the door to get his wife out, too late to help her. Then after he reads his daughter the note, she locks herself in her room, and he has to break down the door again and finds her lying seemingly dead. It's his worst nightmare playing out in front of him again, and it ends just as badly, but in a different way.
*SPOILERS*
I love how hands in this movie tie into the theme of connection. In trying to escape the negative feelings, she's made this unwilling connection to these spirits that ends up consuming her.
ohh this is really good
Yeah I loved this! I’m the camera focused on Mia’s hands so much throughout the film in such a subtle way. I loved how she was peeling her nail polish off slowly as the movie went on.
Mia's hands were also twisted and broken after she died in that accident. Hands receive a lot of attention in this movie!
late but just came back to this after watching the move and great catch!
Now I'm bouncing back and forth on what it meant.
yeah little things like that are what's made me think it's not actually him after 3 watches
The scene where everyone takes turns with the hand with the score alongside it was one of the best I’ve seen in a horror movie in a long time. It gave me chills ! Such a realistic take on how this would probably happen if people found this for real lmao

Yeah I closed my eyes, especially at the minor eye-gore. That shit freaks me out.
Facts watching a teenager go thru that sucks
The ending is so brutal even for a horror movie. I cant imagine the concept of forever and being a trapped soul forever must be one of the worst fates imaginable
I was just shook at the fact that the ending just clicked so well with her touching the hand and realizing that she is now stuck in that spirit world. And I wonder how she would possess the person that touch the hand? like would she try and warn those people or what she would say? What do y’all think?
I’m sure some other spirit has tried that but the people doing want the scary shit to happen.
why did mia look less gory than the others? could it be that as time passed, mia will also looks more like the others?
Probably, give a spoiler disclaimer though!
This movie was honestly sad. I felt bad for Mia grieving her mom since I relate but she wanted the closure. Then Riley being terrified yet still doing it and getting hurt.
it has the hopelessly vibe of old horror movies

I agree. I pointed this out to my sister as the movie went on. Said spirit’s features changed as the movie progressed.
But the issue with this theory is that it does not make sense with how the mom died. She had an OD
@@nagisamomoe2033 yes, that’s what the theory is, that it was never the mom, it was the water spirit taking on the shape of the mom to trick her but it couldn’t hide its own death of being a drowning victim

The sounds were so sharp in this movie. Like, at one point they are smacking each other with pillows and it sounds like they are filled with lead. It could have just been sound system issues in the theater, but the voices were definitely quieter than the rest of the sounds. Even the rain sounded so sharp.
I agree , soon as Mia hit jade with the pillows I was like damn that sounded like it hurt 😂
Mia slapping herself sound too
While we're on the subject of how the people who make movies deserve to be treated well, I found this quote from an interview with the directors of Talk to Me really troubling: ["There were certain days where we'd asked Sophie to come to set not having slept," Danny revealed, with Michael comically cutting in to stress that it was Danny's request specifically. "She would come to set in like a bit of a fractured headspace."]
That's dangerous.

Yes the sounds! It sounded so visceral and I was so disturbed

I thought it was going to happen to Riley too since Mia had it in her pocket when she went to see him again.
The brother from the beginning uses a knife, not scissors.
It was a knife, but I really like the idea of cutting those familial ties and convincing you that the ones closest to you are actually out to get you.
It was her dad in the hospital at the end, he was rushed there after jade found him so i think he really was leaving the hospital when he recovered
As someone with psychosis that likes to watch spoilers (because I love horror but not enough to trigger an episode) thank you ao much for going into it and how the ending is. This is something I'd definitely love to watch but on a good day with some friends I trust to reality check me
Good for you! Hope you had/will have fun!
So the way I saw the ending was that when she saw her dad, he was in limbo (since she stabbed him), by him leaving the elevator, it showed that he survived the near death experience.
Okay, but the concept of losing a loved one and a spirit using that to steal your soul is literally the new Disney's Haunted Mansion.
The scene that Amanda can’t really look at is the one that made my whole theater gasp

I do think the very first spirit Riley saw was actually Mia's mom.
Do you then think that Mia will become corrupted by wanting to possess the living?
@@PurpleAlizeThat’s what I’m wondering. Will she try to deter people from playing the game or will she become evil as well?

This movie was all about pain and suffering too the point the devil loves too break us.. She was suffering missing her mom and had no other family
Saw this yesterday & I loved it. The scene with Riley was so brutal and disturbing I had to look away. I lost patience with Mia when she allowed Riley to go over the time because she wanted to talk to her mother. It's tragic that she ended up in purgatory because of her grief.
18:59 also, on this moment:
I’m obsessed with Riley’s line read.
I would have done the same
@@rebeccadodd1394yes, she also let go of the wheelchair.
I think the 'mum' said something like 'and then we'll have him' and it might have given Mia that moment of realisation that this wasn't her mother at all and she did jump. That was my interpretation anyway!

I also liked how despite everyone using the hand over and over again, Mia was the only one who got addicted.
Idk if anyone paid enough attention at the end of the movie but the kids we fallowed had the left hand
When Mia is a spirit and the other guy says “talk to me” I think she used her right hand meaning that we’re getting a glimpse of where the other hand is and honestly that’s dope
If they did another movie based on the other hand and built on top of what’s already there in a way that was like the spirits claimed by the right hand can be communed with threw the left hand and vise versa and how each hand respectfully warps and twists the souls they take in different ways that could be cool and maybe even a way to brake the curse could be getting both hands and doing the ritual at the same time and u speak to the psychic or satanist who’s hands they were and that’s the final confrontation
I’m only saying this because I loved the movie and it gave me something to think about and I enjoy thinking about this stuff 100% just a thought I was having fun with
I was wondering if it was the other or the same hand!!!
Thought so too, but no. It’s the same hand!

O shit that makes SO MUCH SENSE! I didn’t even THINK about that! Either one works in my opinion and I love how it’s all up to interpretation

Australian horror is crazy. Proud af to be an Aussie right now.
the way the movie went on about her attachment to people and how she wants to be with her mom, it feels like she jumped into traffic because her “mom” was egging her on with “ill protect him”,”he’ll be safe with me”, etc. so she jumped in a last moment of selfishness because she wanted to be with her mom instead of letting riley go.

my interpretation about Mia's father on the hospital is pretty simple; after the stab and Jade's help he was there recovering and we saw at the end him leaving the hospital just like Jade's family.

People REALLY wanted her to talk about this movie. In her last live stream’s she got like a million of questions about it
My theory for the ending:
I think her father did in fact die, but him walking into the elevator and leaving Mia was symbolism for him going to an after-life whereas Mia is trapped in with the hand or in limbo.
DON'T SPOIL IT FOR YOURSELVES!**
OK, 3, 2, 1, spoiler talk.

That hell scene had me shaken to the core - I had seen a glimpse of a baby being eaten and that just had my heart sink for Riley *if that really was happening to him*, if there is an uncut scene, I doubt I'd be brave enough to stomach it - I had my throat constricted with popcorn
Same
Interesting, do you happen to know why you prefer that? :)
Some people really can't handle suspense or tension and need to know what and generally when to anticipate things that might happen - I used to be the same way!

Dont waste your time booooring
Ends how it starts
Pale limbo light at the end of the tunnel..for everyone who dies or just hand folk specifically?
That or just a mean, got eeem, this ain't heaven devil hand girl. Cold
As an Australian, I see a tonne of ads for this movie, and I was hella keen EXCEPT I was worried about the dog. Thanks for clarifying that the dog is okay ❤️
That damn sound design! Riley's possession, the heartbeats before silenced in the letter scene all so well done
Major props to A24! This may reign as the top horror movie of 2023. Saw it twice back to back and there were some things I noticed more in the end the second watch. My goodness though Mia makes SO many poor choices!
Mia’s solution is do the hand more and more and more and more
This was the perfect horror film.
I like how there were subtle things in the movie. Even the song they were singing, "Chandelier by Sia", which is a song about substance abuse.
Ending didnt shock me i kinda saw it coming BUT the way they depicted death like "Lights shutting off to total darkness" was amazing.
8:34 fun fact from listening to the commentary:
That kangaroo was a puppet/ real prop
Thanks for the warning about the ending! Really appreciate knowing what I'm getting into, but not spoiling the ending ❤
her relationship with her dad hit me HARD
I completely ignored my father for many years (I had been told he was dangerous, and only learned they were manipulating me many years later), and then, suddenly, he died. So that feeling of never being able to talk to someone anymore when there's so many things unsaid? I get it
And what you said about "imagine if he woke up in the hospital and his child had died" is exactly the thought I had that made me pull through a pretty dangerous situation as a kid. Didn't want him to go through that, even though we weren't talking
