I wasn't sure what the movie was about before watching your video. I had just finished cooking my meatballs when you started talking about the meatballs. 😔
Not vegetarian and I kinda felt he was basically treating the women livestock with the way he was harvesting the meat. Might be one of the few movies that makes a compelling case for people going vegetarian or vegan.
I love how this movie also plays false the idea that meeting people ‘organically’ is any safer than online. Despite most every horror movie having the killer meet their victims organically, we forget weirdos exist everywhere not just on social media 😂
It isn't really false though. Organically usually has the benefits of light vetting via association of some sort. I don't actually disagree with the sentiment, but this should be mentioned.
Sebastian can play so many characters, there are no limits to his acting capabilities. It's easy to see why Noa falls for Steve, since he's effortlessly charming, which makes it even more devastating when we discover his true intentions.
Someone may have said this already, but I’m going to say it anyway: It is SO refreshing to see a Black woman getting to be a strong friend and well fleshed out character rather than just an exaggerated stereotype. For that alone, you could give props to this movie. Chad may have been the living embodiment of a stereotype (intentionally!), but not Mollie ❤️
oh my god and not to mention that she LIVED in the end! I see so many cliches where the poc common-sense-best friend-to-the-rescue is the one that dies in order to give the protagonist strength to keep fighting or something. I actually thought she got shot at one point and had a heart attack.
@@bannedmann4469 - sassy commentary about white friend’s dating life ✅ - constantly checking in when she’s supposed to be working ✅ - risking her life for the white girl ✅ I cheered when the bartender turned his ass around and went home 😂. And it was nice that Noa seemed to care about her just as much but I knew as soon as I saw her bestie was black , gay AND had braids that’s she was about to get into some shit.
@@bannedmann4469 To quote an article from Afropunk about what I actually mean, "If there’s one role that nearly every black actress has had to rely on at some point in her career, it’s the Sassy Black Friend. You know the one. She’s the character who seems to perpetually exist outside of the plot, a sort of one woman Chorus whose main purpose is to cast her eyes to the heavens in the most exaggerated of eye rolls, click her tongue, and make smarmy comments about what’s going on - while never actually being allowed to take part in what’s going on. There are many variations on the type - some less or more sassy than others - but always at the core of the character is the fact that she isn’t a character but a caricature of the black woman." *Pop culture SBFs include Luther from Mission Impossible, Dionne from Clueless, and Lucius from The Incredibles.* This role was NOT that, and THAT is what I mean. I'm not even going to dive into your desire to minimalize bisexual representation, especially in POC. Is this movie the BEST stride possible? No, but it was trying and that matters.
I’ve watched a lot of horror and it always annoyed me that the man seemed creepy from the very beginning. I like that in this case the man was very funny and charming and can understand why she was lulled into a false sense of security. Her decisions didn’t seem stupid and unreasonable. In my opinion it made it even more terrifying.
@Elias Lionheart It's not that he's hot, it's that he's using charm and treating her with "respect" as a way to manipulate her into thinking he's safe. That's how a lot of abusive relationships start. The person seems nice, different, they have a good job or are respected in their community. Then they flip on a dime and no one believes the victim.
@Elias Lionheart okay i think u just completely missed the point. ur argument is valid but for a different theme. we're talking abt how if the person is charming (does not mean handsome, just has a nice personality), you'll be more susceptible of being lured into a false sense of security. it's different with other horror movies when the guy is creepy from the start. in this movie, he is charming (not handsome, charming). hope it clears it up a bit.
I found Ann to be one of the more interesting characters, and she's possibly suffering from Stockholm Syndrome. She's married to Steve, is fully aware of his doings, and her missing leg implies that she was a former victim of his. Even when she's relieved that he's dead, she still tries to strangle Noa.
I didn't think that was the case. The 1st layer of the film is the horror comedy, the 2nd is all the metaphors. His cannibalism is a metaphor for his cheating, he just wants a body count. He tries to romanticize it too which is hilarious. I thought his wife stays married to him because he's a plastic surgeon and he gives her all the face lifts she could ever want. She knows he cheats and she forgives him. Her limb loss means that he hurts her, in a similar manner to the other ladies. But she's still complicit because she gets things out of it. A house, kids, and the chance to brag about being married to a plastic surgeon who's goodlooking sure play a part in it too. On the first layer, it could be that he didn't kidnap her or anything, she was complicit either from the start or became complicit when she found out later on during their married life. On the 2nd layer, women like that exist, they think "Oh but I invested too much into this" or "Oh I want the free stuff" or "The most important thing is to have a man that I can flaunt", and of course there are women who just straight up get conditioned into believing fuckboi mysoginistic BS, like "That's how guys all are", or "everyone makes sacrifices in relationships" or "Yeah that's the price for having a guy who works while you don't have to do anything". Like all the girls, she's hurt by his actions, but she's willing to put up with it. Edited for clarification.
@@samf.s.7731 I dont think she stays with him for facelifts😅 the scene of her touching her face in mirror just shows that she is scared of getting old and not desirable for him
@@samf.s.7731 oooh I like the idea of the cannibalism representing infidelity. I def get where you're getting that. And I can totally see how Ann is like an actual stockholm syndrome case in that she's also a victim-- both in the literal sense as a former "meat" girl and in the figurative sense as an abused spouse. Like she's damaged enough to become jealous of his other girls and yet feel indifferent about his death because he's awful. I mean, she has kids to take care of. His downfall is potentially theirs too, so she could just be acting in their interest in her own coldblooded reasoning. wouldn't surprise me if lots of abusive/toxic marriages have been kept together for too long because of the fear of how it would effect the kiddos, so that could be part of what her character represents rather than just "pick me" like Amanda puts it
I sure hope it ain't Stockholm syndrome. Although, if it is, wouldn't it be fucking ironic? A fake syndrome created by a man to explain why a woman acted politely to her captor so that she wouldn't get killed, turned into something pathological without an ounce of fact behind it. It would be ironic, but ultimately, heavily overplayed. Stockholm is a boring, overused trope
I loved Fresh. I found myself often laughing and then feeling terrible for laughing. I didn't feel GOOD afterwards, but I didn't feel bad! Very fun (and horrifying) experience.
Arent humans animals? This guy is some sort of creationist/anthropocentrist. Btw there is no direct ban of cannibalism in the main Abrahamic holy scriptures...
About his wife, I think that at first she was a victim that he had slept with, he took her leg and then they found out that she was pregnant. She than had a choice, either give birth to a baby and marry your captor, or be eaten. Plus, he did make her life comfortable with all the money that he was making with his side hustle. She is a victim, but she did become complicit.
I loved this movie! My one critique is that there seems to have been no physical repercussions from having one’s gluteus maximus excised. Following a short recovery, Noa was perfectly comfortable sitting, running, and fighting without those muscles. WTF? I was also among those that suspected Penny to just be the wife playing games.
Indeed, for someone who had just been mutilated and both physically and mentally tortured in a basement for weeks on end, Noa looked no worse for wear, and neither did Penny.
Hahaha, I haven't seen the movie, but I was thinking the same thing throughout Amanda's recap. I feel like maybe the writer picked her glute because it's a play on the whole "men treating women like nothing but a piece of ass" thing. But if they wanted to make it sexual without the glaring plot hole of Noah still being able-bodied afterwards, they could've had him take one of her tits instead. It's still has sexual overtones, it would largely fix the plot hole, AND it'd have a nice element of resonance with the myth of ancient one-breasted warrior women.
I noticed he gave her a pretty thick cushion when they had dinner and were sitting in the chairs. She was hurting from it though after she got all the other women out. She holds her lower backside from then on in the movie. I mean as best as someone can hold their own booty🤷
This movie is SO brilliant. You can analyze it for hours. So many metaphors about toxic masculinity, the commodification of women, white feminism, female friendships, the power imbalance in straight relationships, female body dysmorphia...it's a literal feast.
"it also kind of feels like how I imagine an Etsy store would run. With the extra care, every box gets a picture and a nice little personal item to really drive home the fact that you're getting exactly what you paid for." Holy shit, as an Etsy seller, you freaking nailed it (and I feel really called out right now)
I enjoyed the film and appreciated that its commentary felt present but not heavy-handed. There's one point in it where Noa & Penny are talking through the wall and Penny says something about how they need to remember that none of it is their fault, and that it is never their fault: as a sexual assault survivor that part resonated hard and gave me an even deeper appreciation of this film. With that phrase, the actual cannibalism of these women being an allegory for not just a shit dating life but for actual sexual assault seemed solidified. Noa's process of "going along" was not just reminiscent but near identical to that of enduring an abusive partner and pretending to be who they want you to be for as long as it takes you to gain the strength needed to make an escape. I'm actually surprised if the concept of this film is more focused on dating life and less on the sexual assault factors - both certainly play a part, but the latter seems prevalent. Also very surprised that @amandathejedi didn't actually mention the assault factor - though I suppose if you can manage to not see it, you are lucky.
I literally won’t shut up about how adamant I am that this film is about abuse. Especially when you can read Noa as briefly actually falling for Steve, that is until she realizes it’s hurting the people around her. It’s not her fault, but she can either only gather the strength or only “wake up” to Steve’s actual abuse when it’s affecting others. I love that the ladies get away and there’s a sense that while they’ve suffered, they’ll eventually be okay, especially if she can rely on the other survivors.
I'm not calling it woke or anything like that, I enjoyed most of the movie, but I wish that they didn't make every guy an a@@@@@e, a coward or just flat out evil.
The chemistry between the characters worked really well for me. I found myself in the first 30 minutes forgetting that he was evil and rooting for them as a couple before remembering what movie I was watching
I literally knew nothing about this movie besides the title (didn't even read the blurb) and oh man it was more disturbing than expected. During the beginning I was like "Oh okay it's a cannibalism movie" but then the scene where they were dancing and he randomly took a picture of her happened and everything clicked
@@eraserboy12345 I believe it's during the second date. He asks her to dance and while they're dancing he takes a picture of her. It's a small foreshadowing.
Tell me how the hell I missed that 💀 I saw the movie twice (once by myself, the other with my best friend) and I didn’t even think twice about the picture he took of her 😭
I went in blind into this movie without seeing anything about it other than this video popping up on TH-cam and Sebastian Stan was on the thumbnail so I decided to watch the movie before I watch this video and Ohhh I was not expecting any of it, I thought it was going to be a love story with some weird twist but the twist was so twisted... I love/hate watched it lol
My husband and I often say that we'll never get divorced because trying to start all over from scratch in the dating scene would be too much work. XD "You mean I have to meet someone, learn all their flaws, teach them mine, and we both have to be cool with all of it? Nope. I'm good. You're stuck with me."
Hey, i did not notice the phone thing when I watched it! Thanks. I think the police not showing in the movie might also be commentary on how police doesn't help women in various situations regarding male violence. You know, the more I think about the movie the more I want to re-watch it. And I'm not one to go for horror or body-gore. I'm one to go for Sebastian Stan tho... And Daisy was amazing!
I took the bartender leaving as both a crack at the common occurrence of the only black person in horror movies (especially older ones) dying very quickly, and quite possibly bringing in an element of how the police are such a threat to black men that the bartender wasn't willing to call them. Yes it's shitty that he left, but the fear of being brutalized and wrongfully convicted is powerful, especially for people who have a long history of facing police brutality.
I feel like the fact that the "Black Best Friend" survived is shocking me the most xD actually sounds like a decent movie overall and kind of has a good ending too so that's nice.
@AnomalyINC He's a good writer but there are just some things in his books that I can't really let go. The child orgy scene from IT definitely being one of them. There are some of his books that I definitely enjoyed but I have to question what kind of person regularly has the people of color killed off in his books and graphically writes about something that definitely could've been avoided and there wouldn't be a noticeable effect to the narrative.
I couldnt bring myself to really care about Noa as I felt she was being careless from the get go, but maybe I just feel that way as a lesbian who didnt find "Steve" charming at all. Like I was rooting for her dont get me wrong and she was very cleverly manipulating him, but I wasnt anxious about the possibility of her dying. But by god if Mollie wasnt getting out alive then theres no way I wouldve liked this movie. Penny too. I didnt want them to throw corpses at us just because. I love myself some gruesome unfair endings and deaths, but this wasnt the time. Give Mollie the life she deserves after doing everything in her power to save her friend.
As not bisexual, I will keep that in mind lol. But seriously, Mollie seemed like a sister from another mother kind of girl, I would trust my bff advice in those situations specially since she had more experience dating.
I’m in favor of listening to aroaces b/c we can still spot the red flags people throw out. Though tbf imho, bisexuals would be more likely to have seen the bs & red flags regardless of the gender.
Something that you forgot to mention was that whenever Mollie and Noa end a phone/text conversation, mollie says I love you and Noa always responds with “I love you more.” When Steve is pretending to be Noa and texting Mollie, Mollie says I love you, but Steve replies with a “❤️” which Noa would never do. That little detail started the entire investigation :) I didn’t notice it during my first watch but during my second I did !!
As a person who knows a thing or 2 about butchering animals and human anatomy I'm pretty sure it is not possible to remove someone's ass meat without permanently making their ability to move their legs go away. Also because I know what the internal anatomy of the hip looks like I cannot stop thinking about the way someone would go about doing this.
The whole time I'm just sitting here trying to wrap my head around how he cut her butt off. Like how and how could she sit and dance or even stand? I don't understand!
Surprisingly no we had irl incidents from the Soviet union's cannibal island Nazino one the female survivors had that happen to her. Not sure if it's possible for everyone to survive it but we have people who have sepis is the big concern.
Literally the same thing I was thinking when watching it like I just kept thinking how is she walking because the glutes are attached to the legs you take them off you might as well take the whole leg off
this movie explained to me why I like Hannibal, even though he is a cannibal. Unlike "Fresh", Hannibal wasn't a sexist misogynist. He is so nice and respectful, that you end up wanting him to eat you alive. XD But this guy was a real asshole. At least Hannibal ate everyone equally.
and he didn’t lure women and keep them in a holding cell as he harvested them and sold their meat on the black market. It was only to be prepared for him lol I know he imprisoned that fbi student but at least he wasn’t selling her limbs
I always hate the trope that the victims never incapacitate the killer completely. Why do they always just chuck the weapons on the ground immediately after hitting the killer only once?
Amandas Life Advice is truly important. Doesn´t matter if Cannibal or Serial Killer. Criminal minds also said: Make a connection, become more human in their eyes. it will help to elevate your survival chances.
Considering I love Silence of the Lambs AND Sebastian Stan this movie is just perfect. Hilariously dark and morbid and I loved it. My poor husband was pretty grossed out by the movie though lol.
So based on the trailer I assumed that Sebastian Stan’s character would be a serial killer and the movie would be about the main girl trying to escape. Standard stuff. I was not expecting the cannibalism angle even though it seems super obvious in hindsight. Also wasn’t expecting the social commentary or the comedy. If knew about the cannibalism up front I probably wouldn’t have watched it because I just find the idea so disturbing. Thankfully I went in spoiler-free because after watching it I absolutely love this movie.
I just hate the cannibal stuff. It's not even disturbing. I find myself vomiting thinking about it. I just diverted my eyes, waiting for the moment to be over every time they ate in that refreshing movie
@@bannedmann4469 You realise social and political commentary has been hidden in horror movies for years since before Get Out, right? Candyman, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, The People Under the Stairs, Rosemarys Baby, Texas Chainsaw Massacre etc etc… Hell, even in Jaws, the villain isn’t the shark.
The scene after she wakes up from being drugged was so good and impactful. Like foreal just watching the situation slowly set in and shuffling through multiple emotions was great. Super realistic
the reason mollie realized something was wrong is because whenever mollie said “i love you” to noa, noa would respond “love you more”. so when she texted “i love you” and steve texted back 💜, she knew something was up.
I was fascinated when I heard about this movie, but It's probably better that I didn't watch it. It probably would have disturbed me too much. But I loved listening to you talk about it. Thank you for watching this and sharing all the things my twitchy brain can't handle.
saaaaame. cannibalism is a subject that makes me sick to the stomach even just thinking about, but i’m so fascinated by this movie (and admittedly sebastian stan) that i at least have to watch a review lol
Watched Fresh the other day and the only thing I could think was "I can't wait to see what Amanda's take on this is" Love this movie, reminded me a lot of Promising Young Woman.
My sister and I watched this movie. She doesn’t get why I love Sebastian Stan as an actor. Once everything was revealed, she and I were dying laughing throughout the movie.
I watched this completely blind for Sundance and it abso-fucking-lutely blew me away, I can't believe this is Mimi Cave's first feature film! I think going in blind is the best way to see this the first time, particularly that moment when the opening title FINALLY drops and it becomes a whole other film. I also watched it the day it dropped on Disney+ here over the phone with a friend who was also seeing it completely blind and listening the thier reactions and hypothesis about where it was going while talking film theory the whole time made it EVEN better!
Molly is the example of the perfect side character that can still be vulnerable and captured/killed like in most horror movies. She always had her head screwed on and she was smart enough to call the phone but just didn't think it all way the through which is 100% easily something that could happen
Beyond the obvious moral aspect, cannibalism’s super dangerous. Any parasites or diseases that an animal has are much easier to catch from their meat if they’re the same type of animal as you, because the parasites/bacteria are adjusted to their specific host species. Cross species contamination is much harder. Would not recommend partaking.
In the movie We Are What We Are, a character dies. The autopsy shows the problematic prions. This leads to the human eaters almost being busted. You can see the prions affecting a living character too throughout.
I didn't know that, but it actually makes a lot of sense that it would be way easier to get infected by a parasite from a member of your own species, rather than a parasite from the body of another species. I had heard once that cannibalism, or at least drinking blood, especially the blood of other humans, might help cause diabetes, but idk if that's true.
The customization aspect, with the "souvenirs" and pictures in the boxes, is just SO GOOD??? It's hilarious as a parody of packages sent by small businesses, but also really interesting commentary on how our consumer landscape sanitizes "unsavory" production processes. Who cares how something was made or obtained if you get it in an aesthetically pleasing curated box, right? Just aaaaah! So good!
I went into this movie thinking it was a chef's love story cause my best friend tricked me... Left the cinema feeling like that redhead guy from mean girls "Mom can you pick me up? I'm scared?"
i just wanna talk about amanda’s video format and how it works so well because you can decide whether you wanna drop off after the trailer spoilers if you change your mind about watching the movie! she doesn’t immediately spoil everything it’s handy
Spoiler warning: My take on his wife is she lost her leg naturally through an accident or illness and somehow Steve was able to eat it. That'll put more meaning into the "give yourself to someone" line and also explain why the wife seemed to only has one limb missing with prosthetics
Do you think that maybe they met a little bit before the accident and that's when he first ate human meat? He mentions that he tried for the first time at 19, so maybe they got married young and she was his first "taste?" I don't know if that works chronologically, but just a guess
I think you guys are reading too much into it. She was clearly distressed about losing her leg, and the camera juxtaposed the shot of her missing leg to the shot of Steve's healthy two legs. He did it. That's why she didn't care when he was shot.
@@SapphicKnits I've been thinking about this. A. Unreliable narrator could be in effect since he never told her he was married. So maybe saying 19 makes it seem like less of a sociopathic thing as opposed to mid-20s? Or B. They could have been in a very codependent relationship where he took care of her and then she gave him her leg and helps him take care of business Or C. He was really in his later 20s and she was a patient of his he fell for.
@@dancechica she probably felt very spiteful and upset after finding out Steve cheated on her. In the mirror you can see Anne pulling her face back to make wrinkles disappear so she is probably very self conscious and thinks she will be replaced. Since she is too much of a coward to kill Steve and also benefits from the business she decides to kill Noah. She also doesn't know Noah had friends to defend her, so by killing Noah (the evidence) the business can continue
I loved how further into the movie they amplified the chewing noises, felt it was a good touch. I have misophonia so was a struggle especially when Steve scraped his teeth with the fork when they ate the meatball pasta but deffo helped the movie tbh!!
A phobia is being afraid of something to the point it affects your day to day life; mine - amputation. I love horror, but this I passed on. Thanks for the recap!
Per some of the comments below and this being an allegory for sexual assault … my first reaction was that it’s about the flesh trade. Rich men “consuming” young women. The absolute power that their money can buy in owning, using and consuming to meet their own needs :/
I haven't seen the movie yet (because I live in Germany) and I dodged almost every spoiler so far BUT I will never not immediately watch a video by Amanda so RIP to my spoiler-free self I guess
I found Amanda through her Tusk video (the only movie to date I have not been able to stomach finishing) and I loved Fresh, so I had to watch this review. Also always trust the bisexuality friend. Signed, a bisexual.
I’ve never been turned away from something so fast. I can BARELY stomach reviews of it when clips are involved. It’s so fucking off-putting, it’s like every cell in my body feels danger
Two things: 1) I'm in the camp where I watch those kind of videos vicariously through you and have no intention of watching more than half of what you review. 2) *thank each and every deity* that the sponsor wasn't hello fresh
I watched this film with my dad, who was super grossed out by the literal cannibalism. But as someone who has been in an abuse situation, I felt seen. It was cool to see abuse situations be depicted comedically, without making fun of the victims.
Weird fun fact, I thought I've seen the name of the actress who play Ann before and I was right, she voiced Joy in the french dub of Inside Out. I guess that's some pretty far range.
I loved Fresh but I was confused as to why Steve was holding onto Noa's phone. Specifically when it rings when Mollie calls it. Considering we later see that he has a spot in his wall for all the girl's phones. And Mollie's phone was on there which means that it's not like a "keep only the new one's phones on me" type of situation.
I think once he started receiving molly's texts he decided to keep noa' phone on him so he can pretend to be noa but once he captured molly he didnt really have anyone to worry about or play games on so he put the phones back where he usually keeps them
First time I've ever paused one of your reviews prior to the full breakdown to go watch the film. Glad I follow you because FRESH was a delightfully cathartic watch (given how trash modern dating is) AND it made your review that much better. Keep up the great work, Amanda.
This might sound weird but I like how usually we see cannibals as the lower class but here the flip it to the high society eating the “lower” classes for their own enjoyment
Do we normally? The whole "vampire count/nobility" archetype or trope comes from the idea of the rich and the upper class "eating" the poor or feeding on them parasitically; even Marx used it as a simile in "Kapital" at one point. Just because "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "The Hills Have Eyes" exist doesn't mean cannibalism in horror (or fiction in general) is usually a "low-class" thing. I'd argue it's usually the opposite.
@@sholem_bond huh that’s a great point I guess I didn’t count it in my mind as it’s not eating flesh but drinking blood but yeah that’s a great observation! Especially since they (vampires) often hold power over the lands they live making it even harder for the humans to fight back!
One big difference between this and typical "final girl" movies by dudes is that we don't get subjected to endless voyeuristic grisly shots of the woman's tortured body. Although we know he has removed part of Noa's body, there are no gory close-ups of the damage. We see things from her point of view, and she is focused on escape.
I had to pause this video halfway through for like 20 minutes because this movie is the perfect storm of almost all of my deepest fears coupled (no pun intended) with an actor that portrays a character I'm very attached to (Bucky Barnes) so I was getting this extremely strong physical reaction of anxiety and nausea. Obviously that's not on you, I know what my fears are and i still wanted to see someone review this. I'm kind of fascinated by Sebastian Stan's body of work (No. Pun. Intended. Lol) lately, it's reminding me of when a much younger Johnny Depp did Nightmare on Elm Street and Edward Scissorhands shortly after being recognized as like a heartthrob celebrity. I just thought it would be interesting to share!
I’m annoyed with one thing, BREAST TISSUE IS FAT. If he took meat from Molly’s chest, it would have to be from her pectoralis and she wouldn’t be able to use her arm
Not relevant to this video, but I called my cat “Baby girl” and immediately thought of 365 Days and was creeped out. Why did you bring that terrible movie into my life and corrupt my brain? Also, I appreciate that you are doing this video in front of food themed wallpaper.
Oh same! Sometimes I encounter "Baby girl" in movies or memes, meant to be cute but all I can think of is "eww, that's what the creep from 365 days says". Thanks Amanda 😅
Yeah this was an interesting movie, I've been watching Sebastian Stan "Pam and Tommy", so it's fun seeing him in roles outside of Marvel. I also checked this out for Daisy Edgar-Jones because she's playing the lead in the movie version of "Where the Crawdads Sing" and I love that book, so hopefully she does well. Molly was a great character!
Literally paused the video, watched the entire movie, and came back lol. I was excited for this one and as soon as you started explaining it I knew I had to see it. One of my new favorites for sure
I can’t stomach cannibal horror so thanks for this review; it’s probably the only way I can get into the film. That said, as realistic as it is, I absolutely do not buy that Mollie, as a black woman who has already hunted down this man that she knows is, at best, a kidnapper and at worst a serial killer, would do the phone call gotcha in a rich white home *alone*. That was the biggest script bend of them all; they just needed her to get to point c and couldn’t think of a way to make that happen without her having a character breaking moment.
Not gonna lie I totally read this title as "The Modern Hell of Hello Fresh- Explained- Sebastian Stan". Thought this video was going to be about some kind of Sebastian Stan promotional scandal or something. Sounds like the actual movie, Fresh, is really good! I'll totally recommend it for the next movie night. Love your reviews!
Just watched it, and it was certainly a "ride". Even with the knowledge of what the movie was about thanks to your Sundance review, it felt... fresh. I wasn't a fan of "Raw" despite liking the overall cinematography and tone, it felt a bit too stupid and edgy. I'm making this comparison not just because the similarities between the names and premise, but also because "Fresh" basically nailed it on every single aspect that "Raw" failed for me. Raw was just Ginger Snaps for hipsters, Fresh was more on the vein of the "Hannibal" Tv show (even "philosophically" at times) and even made me question if Noa was going to pull a Will Graham on us... Excelent movie, loved that closing shot too.
The charming and super nice Sebastian Stan ALWAYS has to play this kind of character and it makes me adore him more. He freaks me out but I also in awe with him.
This is the director's first movie!? Like holy crap, way to hit the ground running! I wasn't ever really scared, only a little disturbed in a few parts, but mostly just invested and of course frustrated like with most kidnap-centric horror films lol. But it's a really fun metaphor like you point out! Well, not "fun" but artistically it's cool how the subject is handled. It kinda felt like a Jordan Peele movie in its approach to theme and metaphor that way. And dammit I just love me some Sebastian Stan. Dude gives every role 100% and so did everyone else in this movie imo. Never even heard of anyone else in this movie and they all did a fantastic job, especially the actor who plays Noa.
When I say this movie messed me up, it MESSED ME UP. I couldn’t sleep. I didn’t eat meat for three days. It was all I could think of in the best worst ways possible. It’s a great movie for that, but I dont think I’ll be able to watch it again for a long long time
You are absolutely right! I didn't know the song Heads will roll, and when I heard it for the first time after the movie! Just WOW! The whole soundtrack is really good.
I absolutely loved this movie,as someone who is in the medical field, and a degree in psychology this really intrigued me😌😌And because I live literally everything Sebastian Stan plays in:)
Honestly, I enjoyed it. It's different and has a good balance of horror and comedy and absurdness in my eyes. And I'm really appreciating Sebastian's range. It's weird but a good time!
I always appreciate what people put time stamps for when spoilers are comming because a lot of the time I watch a video like this one before watching a movie I’m not 100% sure about and many time a movie has been ruined for me because of this xx

He's vegetarian, except he doesn't consider female homo sapiens as animals 😂
I love how this movie also plays false the idea that meeting people ‘organically’ is any safer than online.

Organic meat just tastes better. Duh.
He didn't want to pay those Doordash fees
He likes it free-range
It isn't really false though. Organically usually has the benefits of light vetting via association of some sort. I don't actually disagree with the sentiment, but this should be mentioned.
These days if somebody meets me organically in a way like that guy I know he's weird. Slide into my DMs ffs. Don't talk to me in public.
Sebastian can play so many characters, there are no limits to his acting capabilities. It's easy to see why Noa falls for Steve, since he's effortlessly charming, which makes it even more devastating when we discover his true intentions.
the acting capabilities sebastian stan has are incredible! it’s a little hard for me to think of a role that he wouldn’t be able to pull off.

@@samjaneannie5831 Yes! Getting rid of all the cliches was the perfect choice. And the actress did an amazing job.
Lol no. She was the black and gay best friend stereotype rolled into one. That made me laugh, so much for railing against those tropes...

I cheered when the bartender turned his ass around and went home 😂. And it was nice that Noa seemed to care about her just as much but I knew as soon as I saw her bestie was black , gay AND had braids that’s she was about to get into some shit.
@@bannedmann4469 To quote an article from Afropunk about what I actually mean,
"If there’s one role that nearly every black actress has had to rely on at some point in her career, it’s the Sassy Black Friend. There are many variations on the type - some less or more sassy than others - but always at the core of the character is the fact that she isn’t a character but a caricature of the black woman."
*Pop culture SBFs include Luther from Mission Impossible, Dionne from Clueless, and Lucius from The Incredibles.*
This role was NOT that, and THAT is what I mean.
@Elias Lionheart go touch some grass, dude. seriously, you need it
@Elias Lionheart you have no point, you're just a bitter incel
@Elias Lionheart chad is not ugly. he is also hot but because he is not gentleman /charming /funny, she didn't like him and the date ended badly.

About his wife, I think that at first she was a victim that he had slept with, he took her leg and then they found out that she was pregnant. She than had a choice, either give birth to a baby and marry your captor, or be eaten. Plus, he did make her life comfortable with all the money that he was making with his side hustle.
That’s what I was thinking!… my butt was aching the whole time just from the thought of what he did to her… so how was she so okay!?! Lol 😂
@@mayhit I feel like a boob wouldn't make good eating, though, would it?
Like they're mostly just fat, right?
This movie is SO brilliant. You can analyze it for hours. So many metaphors about toxic masculinity, the commodification of women, white feminism, female friendships, the power imbalance in straight relationships, female body dysmorphia...it's a literal feast.
surely... not literal...?
"it also kind of feels like how I imagine an Etsy store would run. With the extra care, every box gets a picture and a nice little personal item to really drive home the fact that you're getting exactly what you paid for."
Holy shit, as an Etsy seller, you freaking nailed it (and I feel really called out right now)
I enjoyed the film and appreciated that its commentary felt present but not heavy-handed.

I was literally thinking that when i was watching
Not to mention the dangers of prions. Beware the prion!

I loved how further into the movie they amplified the chewing noises, felt it was a good touch. I have misophonia so was a struggle especially when Steve scraped his teeth with the fork when they ate the meatball pasta but deffo helped the movie tbh!!
I fell in love with the trailer and the choice of Heads Will Roll
One of the best trailers I’ve seen in a while.
A phobia is being afraid of something to the point it affects your day to day life; mine - amputation. I love horror, but this I passed on. Thanks for the recap!
The background suggests that the movie provides a delicious menu for those of us who stan Sebastian.
I watched it just for him
I Stan him
Per some of the comments below and this being an allegory for sexual assault … my first reaction was that it’s about the flesh trade.
Ditto
LOL
Its on Disney in Denmark. I saw it last night. So its prob in Germany soon
@@ceciliadbeck Thank you for telling me! I'll watch it via vpn then ^^
(Because no idea when it'll be available in Germany xD)
“What’s a little ass to cannibal lovers.” is a line that made me laugh. I don’t know why, but it did
"i'm taking your ass."
single best delivered line imo
I found Amanda through her Tusk video (the only movie to date I have not been able to stomach finishing) and I loved Fresh, so I had to watch this review. Also always trust the bisexuality friend. Signed, a bisexual.
I get you I saw the thumbnail and have been having a stomach ache for how gross it was
Omg I couldn't finish it either
This is such a relief to me that I wasn't the only one who couldn't finish Tusk. I was worried that I was just really weak.
I’ve never been turned away from something so fast. I can BARELY stomach reviews of it when clips are involved. It’s so fucking off-putting, it’s like every cell in my body feels danger
I literally was terrified of that movie and could.not finish it either. I thought about it for months
And just to think everybody thinks hell is some Lake of Fire. But according to Dante, the lowest depths of hell is a frozen lake.
Two things:
1) I'm in the camp where I watch those kind of videos vicariously through you and have no intention of watching more than half of what you review.
I never thought I would be cheering for Sebastian Stan to get his shit kicked in but then Fresh came out.
I watched this movie and my first thought was “I can’t wait for Amanda to cover this” 😂
I loved Fresh but I was confused as to why Steve was holding onto Noa's phone. Specifically when it rings when Mollie calls it. Considering we later see that he has a spot in his wall for all the girl's phones. And Mollie's phone was on there which means that it's not like a "keep only the new one's phones on me" type of situation.
I think once he started receiving molly's texts he decided to keep noa' phone on him so he can pretend to be noa but once he captured molly he didnt really have anyone to worry about or play games on so he put the phones back where he usually keeps them
I watched Fresh only knowing that cannibalism was somehow involved. BOY. I had a blast watching this movie.
First time I've ever paused one of your reviews prior to the full breakdown to go watch the film. Glad I follow you because FRESH was a delightfully cathartic watch (given how trash modern dating is) AND it made your review that much better. Keep up the great work, Amanda.
I regret watching it
Is it wrong that I would have liked the twist of the girl running the business but killing men? Girlbossing? I’ll let myself out.
As a Stan stan I must say, this is definitely one of his roles that no one's gonna be forgetting anytime soon. 🔪🔥
I think it reflects really well on him, though, that he chose this role.
Was it Molly's breast ?
Not relevant to this video, but I called my cat “Baby girl” and immediately thought of 365 Days and was creeped out. Why did you bring that terrible movie into my life and corrupt my brain?
Also, I appreciate that you are doing this video in front of food themed wallpaper.
Oh same! Sometimes I encounter "Baby girl" in movies or memes, meant to be cute but all I can think of is "eww, that's what the creep from 365 days says". Thanks Amanda 😅
That phrase is forever ruined for me 😂😔
😂😂😂
Someone posted how the sign for “fresh meats” is above Noa in the grocery store and that was just *chefs kiss* perfection lol (pun intended)
I loved Fresh because it definitely represented online dating now days so accurately. I can totally related to the Chad dude experience.
The fact that you reference Ginger Snaps shows me that you have quality taste in cinema.
It’s a great movie for that, but I dont think I’ll be able to watch it again for a long long time
Exactly! Like I know it's not actually human meat they were eating, but the way they presented it made me side eye meat for a few days lol
Movies like this are one of the reasons I turned vegetarian
I have no intention of watching this movie, but was curious what happens. So thanks for this video.
Same
You are absolutely right!
Tbh,most of his discography is just straight up trash but some of it is good
@@priya8855 I get where your coming from😌😌
Honestly, I enjoyed it.
I love this backdrop. Feels like we had a sleepover and her mom is cooking us pancakes.
I love how this movie doesn't go full horror till like halfway through
as someone who enjoyed izombie a couple of years ago, i couldnt help but find the dishes in this movie delicious.
in my letterboxd review i stated that steve reminded me of jimmy fallon and i stand by that, they both laugh maniacally
For some reason I don't mind the iZombie dishes but couldn't stand these!! I don't know what the difference is honestly
i came back, and i like the commentary on how older men literally praying upon young vulnerable woman. and how he used his proximity to his "sister" and "niece" to seem more approachable and safe.
In the photo at 0:24 Daisy Edgar-Jones looks like if you combined Dakota Johnson and Anne Hathaway
The Bumble ad I got during this video was *chef's kiss* perfect.
Including a little thank you note for the recipient like an Esty sale is a cute touch. “Hope you enjoy this meat!💕”
