  • Let's unbox this beast of a rack mount NAS and prepare it for duty.
We'll get into why I bought this particular NAS, why I picked the drives and how everything goes together. At the end, we take a look at DSM 7, the operating system Synology provides for these appliances.

Hello, I am considering to buy one second handed. Is it good choice in 2022? Compared to another younger NASes - DS218 f.ex.

It’s important to check which CPU a NAS has, this 815+ has an Intel CPU, this means you get support for virtual machines and the great Active Backup for Business software, which aren’t available on NAS boxes with ARM chips at the moment.
Also, some units with the Atom C2000 series have a lethal hardware bug, so make sure that was fixed under warranty or fixed by the resistor mod, otherwise look elsewhere.

Hello, how do you like RS815+ so far? Was able to find RS815rp+ for 200€ on a secondary market. Thanks

It's been rock solid so far. It's my main back-up and storage appliance and it really helped to replace the stock fans with Noctuas.
It pays to find out whether yours has had the Atom C2000 bug fixed yet, either through Synology or through a soldered resistor, as these have a 100% failure rate without the repair.

@@nelizmastr Oh, I didn't know about the Atom C2000 bug. Thanks. Good thing I have soldering iron and yes I have seen your Noctuas replacement video and was thinking about doing the same thing, but RS815rp+ is a slightly different model, will have to make some research first. Im still learning about NAS and synology.

Not by default, it’s recommended to swap for quieter fans.
