I have a 12 bay nas with SHR-2 (Synology Hybrid Raid) for 5 years now, never had any issues and went from 2tb to 3 to 4 tb WD RED drives. What a fantastic system and good drives. Very satisfied !! Never go cheap on your data protection !! Now going for a rs1219 with 10-12 tb WD red drives with SHR-2. For me DSM and SHR-2 is the reason to buy synology. What a fantastic NAS OS! Best there is.
You weren't messing around, I knew you were getting a NAS eventually, but this is doing it right. I have a Synology DS416J, and I tell you, it was money well spent, as I now have a backup solution for everything, even things like my G4 based machines, (thank you Leopard). Mine currently has 16TB of WD red drives, in RAID 5. NASs are well worth their weight in gold, I just throw everything on that, I encourage any one who creates or has a lot of machines, to invest in one! Just a note on the iTunes stuff, the Synology has an app which acts as an iTunes server, so with that, you won't need the Mac Mini to point to the Synology at all, and it looks just the same as it did when you were.
The RS816 is a great bit of kit, very powerful for the price. The only thing I would say is with buying all the same drives like you have, they've probably all been manufactured at the same time. You're running with one drive fault tolerance, so if there is a fault with the batch down the line, it will be all four drives that are effected.
They were kind enough to give me one drive with a very different S/N so I'm assuming it's from a different batch. Also, I'm copying data to the NAS, not moving data... so even if it does die I still have all my data.
Cool. I am interested to see what you do for your cooling. I have the same rack as you in my office with heat coming from a Unifi switch, USG, CloudKey, Openreach modem, Sky box, 4 bay QNAP NAS and mac mini. Like you say, the door has to be open during warm weather as even with a USB fan in the bottom blowing up it still gets too hot. I have seem someone raise the wooden top by using a nut in between the wood and metal case which provides a void of about 1cm allowing the air to vent.
I've seen that too! That's my plan. I'm gonna stick a 120mm in the top, hopefully raise the lid a little and if I still need more, I'll get one of those 120mm x3 19" panels and rig up an exhaust at the bottom.
I can empathize, Tom. Last year I had an identical WD Blue external HDD that died on me without warning. My whole archive was on that drive. By dumb luck I had backed up the drive two weeks previous so I "only" lost two weeks worth of work. It was a wake up call for me. I upgraded my backup solution the very next day.
I just got home from a BRUTAL day at work, and I see this in my sub box, just what I needed, a 45 minute IMNC video about a NAS... this is gonna be awesome, I can already tell!
Great to see another video Tom! I know exactly how horrendous it feels to have data loss. Through a few hard drive failures and my own stupidity I've lost just about all my personal projects and photos/videos etc. up to about a year ago. And I still don't have most things backed up because I can't afford to lol.
Thanks Tom I was getting worried as he hasn’t put anything out for quite a while, I really liked you last video and watched all the way through it reminded me of what happed to me only I couldn’t retrieve anything I use a 918 plus and a 1515 plus as a double backup now cheers again Terry
I pretty much went the same route when it comes to NAS and harddrives. Synology I am quite happy with, I did opt to do the redundacy thing where you end up with half the storage of the total capacity but it allows for drives to fail and be replaced without data loss.
Hi Tom. It is so nice to see your excitement. Synology is a good choice in my opinion though i myself went with a openmediavault-server after using synology 2-drive units for 5 years. But it is always a joy to wach your videos
Dont worry about WD RED Drives tom, i use them in everything, my time capsule, my mac pro, my NAS, i use them for boot, storage, everything, i dont really have any issues
I love these videos Tom, glad to see you’re back. My only comment comes from experience, I almost lost 4TB of data from a failed RAID. I was able to rebuild and recovered the raw data. Take it from me, RAID is not a backup. Don’t be afraid to keep mission critical data in 2 or more locations if you can.
Twitter ftw! Instant click! This is why my iTunes is on a RAID array that I then manually back up to two separate drives (I split the music/TV shows and movies to their own drives). I have Time Machine set to back up to two separate drives at the same time too. Storage space is cheap, losing irreplacable files is priceless (not so much the media, that can all be ripped and encoded from Blu-ray/DVD or downloaded from iTunes again).
I'm tempted to set up some kind of NAS. As it is now, I use a couple sets of backup drives in different systems. It's more effort on my part to maintain backups that way, but of course it's pretty low-cost as a trade-off.
Of course you probably know that the 8TB WD REDS are the Hitachi design. They are fantastic drives. I've had two of them in my own Synology for about half a year now.
Hopefully you still plan to maintain a separate backup of all important data. Excluding premature failure, drives bought in batches tend to fail in batches, often leading to the failure of a second drive during rebuild after replacing the first failed drive, and thus, an unrecoverable array. Remember, RAID is all about uptime and capacity, and is not a substitute for good backup procedure. Nice drives, I just put together a NAS using 8 x 4GB WD Red's in a RAID10 configuration.
Lucky escape.... but three years of data lost! I use iCloud for my photos, and stream my music on Spotify and save it on my phone for offline listening, and I stream my films or purchase them through Amazon. So I use the power of the cloud basically. I don’t have to worry about it too much then.
same here synolgy DS2413+ with WD red 3/4 TB disks ...never let me downBefore that I had an Areca Card with 8 drives in Raid 6, but that system wasn't flexible at all.
Nice nas! But remember... RAID is not a backup. The possibility of two or more hdds failing at the same time exists, like a psu failure, so always backup your critical data in another machine and if possible offsite. Don't make the same mistake as I did, I woke up one days and two drives of my server were dead, and I lost the whole zfs array :(
Sorry to hear that man! Absolutely. Redundancy doesn't = backup. I may not be able to afford a 2nd NAS right now but I still have my old kit, I'll do everything I can after the scare I had.

1. Building a nas is much cheaper (used enterprise stuff etc.) 2. Synology is known for problems with their products just stopping to work 3. Raid5 is all but obsolete, it would be quite stupid to put them in raid5, or you should have a very safe backup solution in place 4. zfs is just so much safer, use freenas it will make things (especially when things go wrong) much easier
Pro Tip 02: RAID is not a backup... You still need a backup location for all your data ... this is the issue with big NAS storage solutions, you need a backup too! TBH an external HD the same size as each partition isn't a bad shout so say 8 TB for TV, 8TB for Music and 16TB for videos on external USB3.0 drives on a scheduled RSYNC will ensure all your eggs are not in one RAID basket... thanks for sharing dude...
A 1U four bay server with hot swap bays running Freenas would be a good idea for archival data, ECC memory would be a requirement for the checksuming of data, as well as other overhead with ZFS such as the ARC. The server wouldn't need a too powerful cpu, and can be as quiet as the Synology. The only requirement would be 8GB of ECC Ram for the OS to run, and 1GB per TB of storage in the array for the ARC, along with using a non raid HBA if possible, to allow direct communication to the drives, for ZFS to work correctly . Hopefully that info helps :)
WD Red's are pretty good drives I have 8 of them in my server with four other 6TB reds amazing support and services...HGST are amazing as well they are are among the most reliable year after year
Once that Synology has been running for a year or two you will encounter the wonderful world of bitrot! Because Synology uses Ext4 and doesn't properly do data scrubbing you will get corrupted files that RAID5 (SRH single drive) has no means to detect. After 2 years my DS1515 has lost more than 50GB of photos from my professional camera. A RAID6 NAS with ZFS like TrueNAS would be a better long term solution.
I had data loss too and purchased a 32tb NAS too mine has not arrived I went with the Qnap system 8bay 4 bays filled. I had a backup that was about as old. Sadly I purchased new drives and installed a new drive as it was resetting up data a second drive failed then A third one died loosing all data. You should replace a drive on your NAS every three Years. This way they are all of different ages Do not exceed three years as drives fail at about 5 years and it will make sure you do not have what I did. The Synology is the best for graphic editing.
100% why (as annoying as it can be if it messes up when initially uploading your stuff / syncing, was fine for me but I’ve heard of others that had issues etc) why I’ve got iTunes Match / Apple Music... as I use my full library everywhere! 🤓 and never have to worry about it being on a dying drive etc Love the new server too! Good upgrade!
Love the setup - don't know how I came across this video however has offered me some ideas for the future should I upgrade my 4 bay NAS that I'm currently using for PLEX. I appreciate the Dr Who inspired storage unit name!
I have to say that I was almost as excited as you were when you were hooking the new rack up! I really enjoyed this one. I lost my iTunes library too, back before Spotify all but replaced nearly all my music listening habits. Luckily, I managed to upload it all to Google Music before that hard drive failed. You mentioned that you used to go the hackintosh route. When did you transition to authentic Mac hardware? I have such a hard time justifying the cost of an underpowered MacBook Pro when I can just dual boot my gaming laptop equiped with a 1070.
Nice vid. You might want to get that expansion and add 1 more drive for 2 drive redundancy. And also have that 5th drive be a completely different model number as the 4 you bought. It will also give you a spare bay to put a SSD scratch drive that you can mount any PC you have for high speed copies, loads etc on all machines (I do this, I don't use local storage on any machine any more except for the OS and on my gaming rig, the games I play).
That's a great idea! Unfortunately the expansion is the same price as the NAS itself... big shame. Maybe I can do this 6 or 10 months down the line, we'll see how it goes.
Glad to see another video from you in my sub box Tom, just a shame it came about on such a downer but at least you got most of your data back. I priced up the parts you got and cheapest I can find it all is still over £1300 so wow nice big spend but im sure you wont have any issues with that for a good few years :)
Not sure if you still have your drive but have you tried to get a similar drive and swap the circuit board to recover data? And if you’re daring enough, swap the platters?
Tom, you should be able to host the iTunes library/family sharing stuff on the Synology Server too. There should be an "App" in the store on the NAS. Don't know if it's as fully featured as using another mac for it, though.
You know, this is something I wanted to look into down the line. I'd like to experiment with a couple of different setups to see which works the best, especially monitoring CPU usage on the NAS...
Shouldn't have sounded critical in any way ;) Yeah the CPU will be pegged for a while, when it's scanning for media files (photo station/video station) as it does by default on some Synologys (not sure about yours, since you have changed the default shares and stuff). Enjoy your storage :D
It didn't at all, you just jogged my memory on this, something that crossed my mind when I was shopping for this stuff so thanks :) Thanks man, I'll be sure to delve into things deeper and have a little play !
honestly 3 years warranty for NAS drives is no warranty they should last at least 5 years, as you should not be turning them off (no unloading, loading heads, which is biggest tear for HDD) I have Seagate PATA 40GB 3.5" Barracuda IV? drive it have lasted me 11 years without single badblock! We are talking about 11 years of constant 24/7/365 use. I never was turning this off, unless I was moving computer or there was no power. Ordinary consumer HDD, not NAS I stopped using it, as I got SSD for my server It started to fail when I installed it in computer, which was power cycled few times a day after year it almost dies (it have thousands of badblocks), but it still works - HDD from 2003
Nice system.....maybe you should look into using the second gigabit network connection on the NAS (bond in synology) it's a failover. I believe with a managed switch it can be configred to use both network connections and double the speed.
Hey if it helps I had a hard drive like that that crashed with all the pictures my mom took on it. She passed away so it was a big deal. In a frenzy I put the drive in a ziplock and tried to remove the air and then put it in a freezer for several hours to try to get the disks to shrink just a little so the heads could clear. I was able to save about 80% of the drive before it failed again. So if you still need to save info
Iv got a DS214se with WD reds and that’s ran for 6+ years. Great server. It has plex, my iTunes library, MySQL server and I host a website on it ant it handles it all perfectly. I just need to upgrade from 2 x 2TB to 2 x 8TB now the cost has come down (8TB is the max for my model)
I did the same thing. My 8tb nas died. The motherboard died. The drives are encrypted my the software of the nas. I picked up a dell r710 and added 24tb to it. Set the dell to zraid1. I then have 3 4tb externals that will be backs.
thanks for the video because of his video i got he same setup exact same i was going to get the 10tb drives but did not think i need that much space so i got 4 8tb.......thanks again for all the info ... you should do a update on this server nas how its been over the past bit thanks again :) from saskatchewan canada
Great choice on the Synology. It's all well and good building something, but when you're storing critical data it simply isn't worth the risk of possible incompatible hardware or trusting your data to a piece of free software. This will be far more reliable in the long run and the software really is ace. I too would've gone for the WD drives, I bought Seagate drives a year or so ago because they were better value for money and they've all started to fail, and the warranty service is utterly is useless with complete disregard for the fact that the drives might contain sensitive personal data. Why not try sticking that iTunes drive in the freezer? I've known it to work sometimes and you've got nothing to lose, might get get those last few bits of data recovered.
YES. I am feeling down and was "one click" away from starting watching dog and cats videos. Perfect timing, thank you for uploading. I am going to watch it now.
Just watching this again as I just bought (well a month ago) a used RS816 from ebay for £300 and I just need to get some hard drives now. I am watching this to see how it is set up. Im debating if I can get away with 1 HDD for now and add 1 each month and create a raid on them. Do you know if that is possible without loosing the data? Side note I just realized the name you have chosen is the same name I was going to make mine. Now I need to think of something else. I to have a doctor who themed network haha.
Cracking video was a joy to watch , im sure this might not be a issue but what happenes is the NAS it self devolops a fault , can you put the HDD in a new Synology nas and will all of your data be there ?
To all of your questions the answer is yes, but there's a catch... SSDs have come down in price a lot in recent years, but they're still MUCH more expensive. £200 will get you a 1TB SSD or an 8TB HDD. For mass storage, hard drives are still the go to.
Ah, that makes complete sense (you can probably tell I've never shopped for a hard drive). Interesting video. I'm new to your channel & now subbed. Have a good day.
hey tom, great video. got a question... can the ram be upgraded? i bought one of these on the back of this video (16tb storage in a rs812) but it runs out of ram and uses VR which slows it down. currently has512mb.
Hi Tom.. When checking for the compatibility list on Synology's website, it says that the WD Red drives doesn't have vibration sensors and they are not suitable for 24/7 Operations... Can you please share your thoughts regarding this?
In regards to the vibration sensors, I think it becomes more of an issue when the drives are installed in larger servers where the vibration is much greater due to the sheer number of drives. With only 4 drives, I didn't spend the extra cash on Red Pro. About the 24x7 thing, I haven't looked at the Synology website in ages but WD themselves market the Red as a NAS drive suitable for 24x7 operation. From their website: 'The always-on environment of a NAS or RAID is a hot one. WD Red drives are engineered to run cool and quiet while offering optimum compatibility for demanding 24x7 environments.'
@@ItsMyNaturalColour Thanks for your fast reply, how long have you had the HDDs till now and have you faced any problems with them till now or they are functioning as they should be?
SHR1 still been used on such large disk (SHR2 and you have 1 16TB blob, 2 fault protection) Synology Really should by default above 2TB pick SHR2 if 4 disks are present when using the quick setup (just tossing a coin when you need to replace a disk later on that a second error will take out the array,, Especially all the disks have the same batch and uptime) raid 5 SHR1 died around 2015-2010 depending on the size of the disk (only takes a data error when replacing/rebuilding a new disk in raid 5/SHR1 to nuke the array)
great video again ! Just small tip, RAID = not a backup. Use for example external drives for a backup.. I also recommend SHR2/RAID6 especially with those biger harddrives ! And in my opinion you could have beter bought a + series NAS, with an intel Atom for example, horse power is needed when RAID recovery is going on with large drives.. Have you got you UPS also connecte trough USB to the Synology NAS ?
still RAID= not a backup, For example : if the the RAID dies during rebuild, your data is gone. If your syology box dies, and for somehow takes the drives with it, your data is gone. backing up to other places is always highly recommended ! If possible, always use the 3-2-1 back-up methode. www.backblaze.com/blog/the-3-2-1-backup-strategy/ Synology has great back-up Apps, like hyper-backup and its completly free !
oh tom i forgot on a lot of the synologies that second ethernet port can be used with the other one to do load balancing that can help in ur speeds and such
That works better if it's taking to two other machines at the same time. Otherwise, teaming is hit and miss. I gave up on it. At the risk of spamming a link... I found this helpful blog.briancmoses.com/2016/06/building-a-cost-conscious-faster-than-gigabit-network.html
u might be right but on my unraid nas i built out of a 2nd gen dell powerserver 2950 it came with 2 built in gigabyte network adapters and a 2nd 2 port gigabyte adapter i bonded them together not just have them bonded but i wanted load balancing on to not over power one nic port with uploads and downloads on my network as mine hold my itunes folder plus im dumping data into it at the same time
Have you given any thought to racking mounting your Mac Mini server? If you have, check out Sonnet Technologies, Inc, they have racks kits for all versions of the Mac Min Servier. Just a through!
Tom, you are going to NEVER regret that Synology I have the 918+ and I love it. I would recommend you check out the Synology Raid calculator www.synology.com/en-us/support/RAID_calculator?hdds=8%20TB|8%20TB|8%20TB|8%20TB and use SHR or SHR2 for your drives, formatted with BTRFS file system. This would give you 24TB of storage with 1 drive redundancy, SHR2 will give you the protection of 2 drive failures and 16tb storage, also the storage is expandable for the future, if you select Raid1-5 etc it will not be expandable. P.S. you can copy data to the unit while it is building the parity, it will be slower but it will copy just fine.
I got so excited for you I posted those comments before finishing the video, looks like you got it under control :) Cheers and congrats, you will not regret it, and if you have any questions on that Synology shoot me an e-mail.
I don’t know anything about raid or nas setups, but, were you always likely to loose almost 10 tb of space, before you put any files on the system, is there a reason for that
Hi Tom How are you planning on backing up the synology nas raid and fault tolerance is not a backup of anything happened too the main nas or you lost more than one drive all data would be lost

should really use SHR2 over SHR1 (RAID5) if you get an data error when your rebuilding/replacing a disk it can take out the whole array

A valuable lesson everyone should make backups.
You can tell a project is important when Tom actually keeps the manual to look at

Great choice of hardware mate. I too have Synology and WD Red. Had no issues whatsoever and been running it for 4 years non stop.
A perfect comment, thank you! Puts my mind at rest even more hearing this.
+1 for WD RED's love the drives.

Holy cow Tom! 32TB!! I need to upgrade my 20TB NAS I built 5 years ago and something like the Synology would be perfect.
Great video as always! So glad you got most of your media back- it can be horrible when that happens! Can’t wait for the next networking update!

Refreshed my sub box and can't be happier to see a video of you 🎉
Enjoy!
ItsMyNaturalColour i wil like all your video’s!
WD Red's are pretty good drives I have 8 of them in my server with four other 6TB reds amazing support and services...HGST are amazing as well they are are among the most reliable year after year
You’ve finally got a NAS Tom ! 😂
I found a video years ago to fix a bricked hard drive good enough to get the data off it. It was an old Seagate expansion drive.
it is recommended you completely fill up and format disks just to make sure there are no bad sectors..
2 weeks in a row thanks tom
So is this a RAID 5 setup? And if so why did you select that RAID option? Was it because of disk space? Wouldn't a RAID 10 be the best scenario?
awesome to see a new video!
Brilliant to see you are getting your data sorted! Love that setup dude! :D
Thank you so much man!!
i am also going to buy the rs816, good choice.
It didn't at all, you just jogged my memory on this, something that crossed my mind when I was shopping for this stuff so thanks :)
Thanks man, I'll be sure to delve into things deeper and have a little play !
Love the recent uploads Tom, please do some more apple mac video's! They're so fun to watch! 😁
I'll see what I can do :)
honestly 3 years warranty for NAS drives is no warranty
they should last at least 5 years, as you should not be turning them off (no unloading, loading heads, which is biggest tear for HDD)
I have Seagate PATA 40GB 3.5" Barracuda IV? drive
it have lasted me 11 years without single badblock!
We are talking about 11 years of constant 24/7/365 use. I never was turning this off, unless I was moving computer or there was no power.
Ordinary consumer HDD, not NAS
I stopped using it, as I got SSD for my server
It started to fail when I installed it in computer, which was power cycled few times a day
after year it almost dies (it have thousands of badblocks), but it still works - HDD from 2003
Nice setup! Now that you have a raid z setup, you can learn the joys of having your file transfers limited by 1gbe ethernet and not the drive speeds.
Loren Howe
Maybe he'll do this
blog.briancmoses.com/2016/06/building-a-cost-conscious-faster-than-gigabit-network.html
Thats one of the reasons I am looking at QSan it has support for 10Gbps with a daughter card for video work.
if you go on youtube there are videos where u can take that drive apart and get it back uo and running and have all ur stuff back
Brilliant Nas setup
Awesome upload. It’s been a long time coming.
haha thanks man!.. 5 years or so...
Yes my fav tech channel
I am actually looking at the QSan unit its got a few more enterprise features which may be of value to me.
Ohh how I felt you! I just recently lost my whole library of .flac music because I was too stupid/lazy/whatever to make a backup.
DS or RS? Need something for personal backup but should have enough performance and also handle faster read/write speeds.
31:10 I'm pretty sure that's because the AFP stack for Synology DSM spoofs itself as an Xserve to other Macs, but I could be wrong.
Adam Creed
Ah, I see. Thanks for the info!
Nice system.....maybe you should look into using the second gigabit network connection on the NAS (bond in synology) it's a failover. I believe with a managed switch it can be configred to use both network connections and double the speed.
Or 10gbe or 40gbe

I just need to upgrade from 2 x 2TB to 2 x 8TB now the cost has come down (8TB is the max for my model)
awesome, glad to hear your experience with similar kit has been so positive!
Use Resilio Sync. That should work with Synology NAS too. Just need to install the app for that. Very handy app.
Nice one, cheers for the tip!
Have you tried putting the drive and another enclosure to see if your iTunes library still works
Is it in the Apple Icloud so if you get a new unit then everything should restore automatically, 10x100TB Data Centre SSD drives are the way to go.
Why not put a 200 mm fan, and slow it down a bit? That would be quieter with the same or higher rate of airflow.
In the rack? The cutout is for a 120mm. 200mm would be a much better option though.
I did the same thing.
My 8tb nas died. The motherboard died. The drives are encrypted my the software of the nas. I picked up a dell r710 and added 24tb to it. Set the dell to zraid1. I then have 3 4tb externals that will be backs.
WD hard drives all the way. Wouldn't touch another segate drive with a 100ft barge pole as I've had multiple fail on me
thanks for the video because of his video i got he same setup exact same i was going to get the 10tb drives but did not think i need that much space so i got 4 8tb.......thanks again for all the info ... you should do a update on this server nas how its been over the past bit thanks again :) from saskatchewan canada
I would get a complete second unit with drives as a backup mirror.
Somethings it works when putting the harddisk in the freezer, it works one time and dead after that for forever.
Love Synology gear. The + version has a better processor, just a shame the 816 is only 32 bit. Great video though Tom.
YES.
I am feeling down and was "one click" away from starting watching dog and cats videos. Perfect timing, thank you for uploading. I am going to watch it now.
Really glad this has cheered you up. Enjoy :)
All your media collection, such as movies and tv shows have you ripped them from DVD’s or downloaded them ?
Original RED (before the Pros) they had 5 year warranty's sad to see them charge a ton more for just for the extra 2 years
Cracking video was a joy to watch , im sure this might not be a issue but what happenes is the NAS it self devolops a fault , can you put the HDD in a new Synology nas and will all of your data be there ?
Before I ask, I must say I'm a bit of an idiot at tech. Why not get SSD? Aren't they more quiet, cool, faster and reliable/stable than regular drives?
To all of your questions the answer is yes, but there's a catch...
SSDs have come down in price a lot in recent years, but they're still MUCH more expensive. £200 will get you a 1TB SSD or an 8TB HDD. For mass storage, hard drives are still the go to.
Ah, that makes complete sense (you can probably tell I've never shopped for a hard drive).
Interesting video. I'm new to your channel & now subbed. Have a good day.
@@ItsMyNaturalColour just shows how prices are falling, Amazon had a Samsung Evo 2tb on offer for £169 a few weeks back
hey tom, great video. got a question... can the ram be upgraded?
i bought one of these on the back of this video (16tb storage in a rs812) but it runs out of ram and uses VR which slows it down. currently has512mb.
INMC, have you taken the USB interface off the HDD? Sometimes the controller for interfacing between USB and SATA dies not the actual HDD.
that is a nice setup tom
From their website:
'The always-on environment of a NAS or RAID is a hot one.
SHR1 still been used on such large disk (SHR2 and you have 1 16TB blob, 2 fault protection) Synology Really should by default above 2TB pick SHR2 if 4 disks are present when using the quick setup (just tossing a coin when you need to replace a disk later on that a second error will take out the array,, Especially all the disks have the same batch and uptime)
raid 5 SHR1 died around 2015-2010 depending on the size of the disk (only takes a data error when replacing/rebuilding a new disk in raid 5/SHR1 to nuke the array)
great video again !
Raid-0 Is the only one that does not have backup, I class Raid 1-10 as backup as if a drive crashes it will rebuild said drive
still RAID= not a backup,
For example :
if the the RAID dies during rebuild, your data is gone.
If your syology box dies, and for somehow takes the drives with it, your data is gone.
backing up to other places is always highly recommended !
If possible, always use the 3-2-1 back-up methode.
www.backblaze.com/blog/the-3-2-1-backup-strategy/
Synology has great back-up Apps, like hyper-backup and its completly free !
oh tom i forgot on a lot of the synologies that second ethernet port can be used with the other one to do load balancing that can help in ur speeds and such
Nice tip!
That works better if it's taking to two other machines at the same time. Otherwise, teaming is hit and miss.
I gave up on it. At the risk of spamming a link... I found this helpful
blog.briancmoses.com/2016/06/building-a-cost-conscious-faster-than-gigabit-network.html
u might be right but on my unraid nas i built out of a 2nd gen dell powerserver 2950 it came with 2 built in gigabyte network adapters and a 2nd 2 port gigabyte adapter i bonded them together not just have them bonded but i wanted load balancing on to not over power one nic port with uploads and downloads on my network as mine hold my itunes folder plus im dumping data into it at the same time
I usually use teaming for server to NAS. You have to have a smart switch that can BOND the ports together.
mine is a non managed switch buts fairly new but supports the teaming
Have you given any thought to racking mounting your Mac Mini server? If you have, check out Sonnet Technologies, Inc, they have racks kits for all versions of the Mac Min Servier. Just a through!
Can you tell me which rack you have. I want to buy one myself
Running SHR, shown in the vid at some point, no idea where haha! The RAID calculator was very handy when I was shopping.
I got so excited for you I posted those comments before finishing the video, looks like you got it under control :) Cheers and congrats, you will not regret it, and if you have any questions on that Synology shoot me an e-mail.
I don’t know anything about raid or nas setups, but, were you always likely to loose almost 10 tb of space, before you put any files on the system, is there a reason for that
Hi Tom
How are you planning on backing up the synology nas raid and fault tolerance is not a backup of anything happened too the main nas or you lost more than one drive all data would be lost
Missed these videos do much!
just a fyi HGST is made by western digital they seem to run about the same price
Did you want slide rails to make it easier?
I'm with you tom I love WD HDs
Really hating you right now, lol I'm so jealous. You are going to love this thing
