I've noticed that during regular file operations, my TS-h973AX running 8GB uses over half the RAM. My TS-h886 has 16GB, and also uses... half. So it's upgrade time. The TS-h886 runs ECC DDR4 UDIMMs and the TS-h973AX with the AMD proc looks like it uses any DDR4 SODIMM, ECC or not. However, the intarwebs recommend that when running ZFS (I am!), to use ECC. So 64GB for each for now, maybe 128 total for the TS-h886 if I add a storage expansion and fill it with surveillance drives in addition to running Plex.
My main problem was running a Plex Server without running out of Memory. My 4GB Ram Qnap had the tendency to cap out at 80% and start to Swap Files aggressively leading to the failing of the QTS User Interface. At that point I had to restart the NAS every evening until I disabled Plex. Now with an added 8 GB (Qnap Original) I only ran into that Problem once again with Plex taking whopping 7GB of Ram at that time. Maybe some memory leaks in Plex in that version or it did just use everything it got. I have to say I was shocked when I saw QTS break down when the swapping threshold was reached. I would rather have some extra Ram even for normal tasks now.
Ram may work fine until the vendor updates OS. Keep original ram. May have requirement to revert during upgrade, then return to the better configuration... All part of the fun. (keep copy of data)
I upgraded the memory to 8 GB on my DS920+ for virtual machines And notice that My windows 11 virtual machine sometimes could not use the full 6 gigs because of system resources and so I had to reduce it to 5 GB. After a while, I decided to unofficially upgrade to 20 GB (16 GB stick + 4 GB built-in) made a noticeable difference allowing me to allocate 12 gigabytes to Windows 11 VM leaving a full 8 gigs for the system. I also have an Ubuntu VM which I allocated 8 GB. It's worth mentioning that I don't run them at the same time obviously.

I just replaced the RAM in my Synology DS216+II and can confirm that 8Gb RAM from Timetec (76TT16NUSL2R8-8G) works great. Also, there is NO NEED to remove the fan or fan cable. My warranty seal is still intact. You can wedge the motherboard up slightly to access the RAM module. Run Synology Assistant to confirm memory compatibility.
I just increased the memory in my Asustor AS6704T 4-bay NAS. I used a stick of Patriot Viper Steel 8GB DDR4-3200 CL18 SODIMM. It isn't on the qualified list, which is really short, but the memory works fine. None of the memory on the qualified list was even available in Canada that I could find, which is really bad, Asustor needs to test and qualify more memory. I have one more slot so I can increase it to 16GB in the future. I also like the Patriot since it has a heat spreader on it. The Celeron N5105 can only access 16GB, but I am using this unit as a file backup only, so I don't need much memory.
I have a Synology 920+, and added 16GB for a total of 20GB. The memory works fine, but was not used. I then swapped out the 16GB for 4GB to meet Synology's recommendations/requirements. I haven't seen the top 4GB get used. If I ever need more memory, I have it.
Special purpose NAS devices evidently need a lot of RAM to do what you would ordinarily use your server / computer for. To me, a NAS or a SAN should be a pretty dumb device knowing only how to host storage. The video talks about the NAS taking an active role in hosting virtual machines. I guess there's nothing wrong with that but it kind of crosses the line, in my opinion. A VM host might use the remote storage of the NAS to store the image but the NAS shouldn't have to know what type of data it is. I use a Windows Server as an iSCSI target (SAN) and all it does is manage large Virtual Hard Drives (VHDs / VHDXs) and doesn't know or care what is stored within them. This greatly reduces the amount of memory needed on the SAN because it's only doing one thing - sharing drive space. My 16GB RAM in my iSCSI target computer doesn't get used all that much because all the real work is being done elsewhere. My VM host, on the other hand...

If a VM is running a database, it may be better to run it on the NAS. I think the market is moving away from dedicated servers for every application. Just put one of the Crucial 16GB DDR4 SODIIMM modules (CT16G4SFD8266) in to my DA1621+ after removing the 4GB Synology module that came with it. The NAS failed to boot when powered back up! Changed back to the original RAM and it booted fine. Anyone with any thoughts? Maybe a bad module? Guess I have time to return to Amazon.
Just received my DS1821+ a few days ago. I have ordered 2 X 16GB Kingston ECC RAM which Kingston's site says is compatible specifically with my NAS. It is 1/4 the price of the Synology RAM. Much as I love my Synology NAS's (Currently have CS407, DS1512+ and now 1821+) I refuse to pay Synology 4 X the price for the add-ons. It's not like Synology Makes the stuff. They have someone else make it and then just slap their name on it and multiply the price by 4! Will keep the 8GB module that came with it and if I run into any issues that require support I will simply remove my RAM and the NVME M.2 drives that I will be adding and put the 8GB Synology module back in before requesting a support ticket.

I use 3x 4TB Passport WD External drives that I keep offsight in my safety deposit box. Hi. I just purchased a 920+ along with 2 - m.2 drives and a 4GB memory chip. I watched your video regarding setup part 1 and you were saying to do the initial set up without the extra memory. I was just wondering at what point should I install the m.2 drives and the extra ram. I probably don't need the extra ram and the 2 - m.2 drives right away, but I figured since I was making the purchase I bought everything at once. I'm just confused when I should install the extra's. it is a lot easier on my qnap. i've a ts-251 and it was easy, no disassembling at all. on other hand, my synology 216j requires me to almost disassemble it.
can I ask your opinion on how to speed up the load times viewing image previews using adobe bridge or any software in general? The images are on the nas folder, ethernet, D920+ Synology; I use my laptop to view and work on the images. will ram help here, or adding cache drive?
Hmm, in a different video I got the impression I could have good performance with 4tb cache (read-only) on a NAS equipped with 4gb of RAM. Now you sorta said that if I want 10gb speeds, I'll really want 8gb of RAM, which does make sense. (I have a thunderbolt to 10gbe adapter and the 10gbe card in my synology NAS.) So now I'm wondering if I really need that RAM for 10gbe speeds when video editing, since a large portion of my files will be on the 4tb cache drives anyway. Hmm... maybe my 10gbe connection can't access the cache as fast without more RAM? Was just gonna wing it and see how/if it works (just bought the cache), but thought I'd drop this question here as well.
Just bought a ds920+ and just gone for Kingston 4GB 2666mhz etc. I realised that it’s only got 1 rack of chips ( only one side) and video recommends 2 rack. Is that only beneficial for the larger sticks of ram??
@NASCompares Hello bro, I upgraded my DS220+ to 10 GB by adding crucial 8 GB memory module. Everything went ok and didn't have any problem with system stability. Just after upgrade, I can see gradually the "Cached" memory starts to increase in resource monitoring and almost after a week (even when I do a system restart) it reaches to 8.5 GB and this is causing free memory amount to be less than 1 GB, and if I check the swap memory I see system start using about 1.3 MB out of 7.7 GB. Is this a normal behavior? Why DS220+ doesn't empty cache memory to use it instead of using swap memory? Will this be fixed in DSM 7? Thanks for your hint ;)
Might be a bit late on this, but that's normal behaviour. The more memory you give a machine, the Operating System (even in the case of the NAS) will start caching data resources that are frequently used in order to be faster overall. But one thing to keep in mind, cached memory is almost free memory. If the system is running low on free memory it will automatically free up cached memory that has not been used recently. So long story short, this is normal and it will benefit in the responsiveness of the system. You don't have to worry about it, it's an automatic process that the Operating System is handling. The more memory you will give it, the more cached memory you will see in use, and less free memory.
Second comment! 😁👍 Most notably is ZFS, that really puts a relatively higher strain on memory-utilisation. Next is Thunderbolt 2/3 but indeed also not forgetting Surveillance Station. But I have even gone so far of replacing the CPU (mostly the Intel in the -T version) for some QNAP's that were purchased in a time that only the "lighter" CPU's were offered by QNAP. Not for the fainthearted nor when you still have warranty or have some sort of technical inclination :) But expanding the memory can indeed be beneficial. Sometimes even beyond the "formal maximum" within certain limits. But Robby already covered the "unofficial memory" in previous episodes indeed.

So which is the best first upgrade for a 920+ Adding more memory or adding NvME caches?
NVMe caches are a bit fraught themselves. I'd add memory.

The jump from 1GB to 2GB is significant but beyond that is not noticeable in my experience. I dont have a 10gb NAS though

Ref earlier test on TS-x63D memory upgrade. Have you tested if 2x16GB is working on the TS-x64 series?
You are also constrained by what the CPU can handle, which has nothing to do with Synology. If its max is 32 you’re limited to 32 etc
