Head of the Snake Part 4: Aftermath - Danger Close with Jack Carr

  • In May of 2011, Mark Owen crossed the Afghanistan-Pakistan border on a mission to capture/kill Osama bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaeda - to decapitate “The Head of the Snake.”
But that night in Abbottabad, Pakistan is just a part of Mark’s story.
In this special four-part series of Danger Close, Jack sits down for an extended interview with Mark to discuss the story you haven’t heard. Starting with Mark’s childhood in a remote Alaskan community to his early days in the SEAL Teams to 9/11 and the sustained combat that followed to his selection and training for a team at the highest echelons of special operations, this is Mark Owen unfiltered, candid, and uncensored. Mark would go on to take part in high-profile operations like the mission to rescue Captain Richard Phillips from Somali pirates and the search for Bowe Bergdahl. He would later work his way up a stairwell in a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan and into a hallway where the most wanted terrorist in the world waited…
But, as Jack and Mark discuss, the aftermath of the raid would not only change the public profile of Naval Special Warfare, it would also alter the course of Mark’s life in ways he could have never anticipated.
IRONCLAD and SIG Sauer proudly present, The Head of the Snake: The Killing of UBL, a special Danger Close event.
    Part 4: Aftermath
The days following the raid that killed Osama bin Laden were an exciting time for the American public, but for the men that were there the night he died things were taking a turn.
In the final installment of The Head of the Snake series, we learn about why Mark’s military career would soon come to an end, and how his decision to tell the public the story of the Bin Laden raid drew the ire of the Pentagon.
It’s a fascinating look at the post-9/11 American military, issues within the Navy Special Warfare community, how the Defense Department deals with internal controversies, and more.
Mark Owen’s first book - No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission that Killed Osama Bin Laden
Mark Owen’s second book - No Hero: The Evolution of a Navy SEAL

Most eye opening interview ever. Shows just how F'd up our military/ government really is. I was medically retired after 30 years 11 months of service and I am very jaded towards the government. Massive respect to "Mark" for what he did for our country and all the needless BS he'd had to endure. Guys like you make me proud to have served. Prayers and many thanks to you!

I thought the raid episode was gonna be the best one…but now I think this one’s it. Wasn’t a SEAL, wasn’t a team guy at all. Army Infantry, deployments in Afghanistan, worked with ODAs. Had a deployment of a lifetime. Decided I’d get out. Transitioning from THAT to civilian life was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done. I separated in 2016 and still dealing with it right now as I type this. I can’t even imagine what it’s like to be in 15-20 years where a good majority was with DevGroup. That must be a wild fucking ride of a transition. Especially when you’re the guy dealing with civilians again and you’re the guy constantly plying over and over in your head ‘’…I was on the fucking Bin Laden raid.’’ I can’t even imagine THAT

There's a lot to digest from this podcast and so much to learn. You are a master storyteller in books, but just as much in your conversations like this one. Love that you were nothing but a loyal friend to Mark and never stopped finding way to support him. The fact is, he did the same and that changed both of your lives for the better.

Phenomenal interview! I'm upset that "Mark" got treated the way he did after his book was published. I recently watched the interview with Eddie Gallagher and saw how he was treated as well. I'm baffled as to why the Government wants to make an example of these warriors after they put their life on the line for us. I'm certainly looking forward to your next interview as well as "Mark's" next book.

Bro, c’mon, there’s a night and day difference between Mark Owen and Eddie Gallagher.
Owen is a humble patriot who got persecuted for telling truths that made the government look bad. Gallagher is an arrogant wannabe who shot a civilian in Afghanistan while attached to an Special Forces ODA and got kicked off the operation years before *his own SEAL platoon* turned him in for atrocities. Yes, he was found not guilty, mostly because the prosecutors and investigators suck at their jobs.
It’d be great to see one of the SEALs who turned in Gallagher finally be interviewed, get their side of the story regarding the events in Iraq.
      Mark Owen: Good dude.
Eddie Gallagher: Exact opposite of a good dude.

Thank you, Jack, for giving ‘Mark Owens’ the opportunity to present his story of life in the SEALs, and the opportunity to defend himself from an obviously biased DOD, unjustly, because of the prejudice of their political civilian leaders. Seeing how what you went through to get published when you were the poster child for SEAL recruitment, knowing of their former military having to wait 6 to 18 months for DOD to approve their publications, it fills me with disgust. What they did to Mark is truly the bottom of the barrel disgusting. The current leadership of the Democratic Party deserves the contempt the military has for them.Benghazi wasn’t enough insult. The greedy politicians wanted the spotlight exclusively on them and decided to flex their muscles. The 4 part series needs to be seen by all levels of military, to see your future journey in dealing with these politicians now and in the future. I admire the courage of all of you.

This is something that is not talked about enough, how challenging it is and possibly one of the hardest things we will ever do but we have the capability to impact our country and world in other ways. The knowledge, both hard and soft skillsets, and mindset and much more will always come out in whatever we decided to do. It’s just accepting to close the chapter being in the military and it’s time to move on.

It's like the military Flag Staff organizing conferences and meetings specifically in the regions of conflict zones so that they can "earn" their ribbon. Most people don't realize that the requirements to qualify are: being in the region for 2 consecutive months which means if you are there the last day of one month and the first day of the next you qualify. That's why you see Officers with a chest full of ribbons. For them it's all about their Fitreps. They take 2 yr billets in various specialized commands and never really do anything.

That may float at Tier level units, but there is no way at the big Army is going to pay anyone for 30 days while out on a transitional internship. They will get every pound of flesh they think they are owed and no Senior level Officer or NCO would stick their neck out for that idea.

Anyone with half a clue sees that you didn't do it for selfish reasons. (unlike some other authors who have hit the lecture circuits for big $$$)
NSW was butthurt that they didn't have their fingers in your pie...and weren't able to 'franchise' you.

To hear how the government has went after him over a book is sickening especially after the Afghan withdrawal and leaving millions of dollars worth of equipment that’s going to be turned on innocent civilians and ultimately our kids or grandchildren will have to go back and face one day it’s like wtf is the government serious smh

Gotta Say sounds to me like Mark Owen did everything right in the steps before writing the book. Who am I to say cause I don't know anything...but it might have been naive of him to think he could put out a book so soon after the mission and that it wouldn't cause ALOT of pushback from the Seal Community...but in hearing his explanations...it all sounds like he did the right thing. I wish him the best.

Really, every service member knows books need to be reviewed ahead of time. Why is he putting it on his attorney? I can remember signing paperwork the stated I couldn’t write about anything for 75 years.

This was an extraordinary 4 part series! Great job to all involved.
When the JAG and NCIS, (Which was NIS when I was in) talk went into the legal nightmare I laughed, got mad, laughed again and kept that cycle up as it reminded me of a couple "Instances" that I had when I was in.
The legal talk reminded me about their dishonesty and/or how much they lie and drag their feet. The legalese also reminded me how an agreement with Navy legal and the Navy itself doesn't mean shit to them but it had better mean the world to us peons on our end or they hit you with "What about the agreement we talked about, don't you have any honor or pride?" while at the same time they all know that they have no intentions of having honor or pride on their end.
I also couldn't help but think "That's the good old government and government employees that has nothing but the best interests and 100% concern for the well being of each and every American citizen" and then realizing that there is no way we can ever vote our way out of this mess.

What about Robert O'Neill's account of what happened? Owen and O'Neill both claim to be second in line behind the point man. Has O'Neill been discredited?
