Head of the Snake Part 1: The Road to Afghanistan - Danger Close with Jack Carr

  • In May of 2011, Mark Owen crossed the Afghanistan-Pakistan border on a mission to capture/kill Osama bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaeda - to decapitate “The Head of the Snake.”
But that night in Abbottabad, Pakistan is just a part of Mark’s story.
In this special four-part series of Danger Close, Jack sits down for an extended interview with Mark to discuss the story you haven’t heard. Starting with Mark’s childhood in a remote Alaskan community to his early days in the SEAL Teams to 9/11 and the sustained combat that followed to his selection and training for a team at the highest echelons of special operations, this is Mark Owen unfiltered, candid, and uncensored. Mark would go on to take part in high-profile operations like the mission to rescue Captain Richard Phillips from Somali pirates and the search for Bowe Bergdahl. He would later work his way up a stairwell in a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan and into a hallway where the most wanted terrorist in the world waited…
But, as Jack and Mark discuss, the aftermath of the raid would not only change the public profile of Naval Special Warfare, it would also alter the course of Mark’s life in ways he could have never anticipated.
IRONCLAD and SIG Sauer proudly present, The Head of the Snake: The Killing of UBL, a special Danger Close event.
Part 1: The Road to Afghanistan
Long before he was a part of one of the U.S. military’s most high-profile missions, Mark Owen was the child of Christian missionaries living in a remote village in Alaska. It was there that he would begin to learn the survival and shooting skills that would become major assets in some of the most dangerous operations conducted in the War on Terror.
In part 1 of the Head of the Snake series, Jack hears about Mark’s childhood, his early days as a Navy SEAL, and how the 9/11 attacks would revolutionize special operations.
    Mark Owen’s books:

I hate what happened to Mark. This dude should be looked at as a bad ass warfighter who put his life on the line rather than a guy that didn't get his story vetted by the Govt. I'm glad he did what he did because we deserve the real story and not some propaganda bs they wanted to spin. And we all know that's why they went at him. I understand why he did, AND SAID everything in the book. Cheers to you, Mr Mark Owen.

Hi Jack, I am a fan of your books and am interested in hearing more interviews like this. As you develop your interview style, consider letting the guest talk more and you talk less about your own personal experiences. I felt like I was listening to two people on a first date, each excitedly talking about their own experiences rather than hearing you ask insightful questions about Mark's lived experiences for the audience to hear since he is the interviewee.

Yep I totally agree - (I like Jack) but he seems more interested in talking about himself rather than focussing on the person he's supposed to be interviewing. That's not a sign of a good interviewer - Shawn Ryan has it spot on. He rarely talks about himself...he listens and asks questions....that's how it should be done.

My husband was an army draftee in 1968 who trained at Ft Ord (now a jr college campus) and AIT in Georgia then sent to Vietnam as a forward observer and tunnel clearer. I was pregnant with our son when he left for Vietnam. He got notice of his new father status after the Red Cross notified the wrong solider. Needless to say that soldier was shocked. “No Easy Day” was one of the first SEAL books I read, if not the first.
I later joined in 2013-14 specifically to try to become a SEAL. I walked in to the recruiters office the Monday (02/04/2013) after Chris Kyle was killed on a Saturday (02/02/2013). His death made me feel like the time to step up and go was now. Unfortunately my recruiters had other plans.
I fell for every lie, and got discharged in bootcamp (sent to a separations division on processing day-4) for “fraudulent enlistment” as a direct result of listening to my recruiter when he told me, “just say no about that part” on one of the medical screening questions while I was filling it out while sitting across from him at his desk…
They manipulated & purposefully screwed up multiple things during my enlistment process, and on my paperwork, including putting a completely incorrect last name on 100% of my paperwork, and then the Navy permanently labeled me with fraud as a direct result of doing exactly what the men who were wearing the same uniform that I wanted to wear told me to do.
    I’m still bitter about it.

So it’s hard to “let that go” or forget about it when that situation will be attached/connected my SSN for the rest of my life.
It’s quite frustrating, as I hope you could appreciate.

I'm shocked to hear that you two feel that pursuing college first was the correct choice. The only choices that I could visualize when leaving high-school were joining the armed forces, starting a career at the local furniture plant (now closed), or going to school. I ended up going to a technical school, powersports industry and followed that career. I don't know that a day goes by that I feel like I made the correct decision. I always feel like I could've taken this path later if I'd wanted to. Chances are I wouldn't have been the greatest enlisted man in history, but I'm old enough now to recognize that the younger me could have been some use for my country. I'm not bragging, just recognizing my greatest traits, but what I feel is that at the very least is that with my IQ and/or willingness to push my body I could've at least been an amazing trash hauler or something at the minimum. I guess it's easy to feel like I chose wrong because I've grown quite burnt out with the career I pursued, and feel trapped in it these days. You guys are probably correct, it was just interesting to hear that you unanimously felt that way. I suppose that since I'm knocking on 40 that it's natural for my brain to contemplate every "what might have been" that it can conjure up. I'm glad that our armed forces allow us the type of life where my career is the biggest stress that I have. I'm thankful for the people who have fought to allow me to have such benign worries. Thanks to everyone for making life so simple for us regular folk.

Matt Bissonnette is his real name. Mark Owen is a Nom De Plume.

  • @UKnowIt22000

I thought Matt Bissonnette came out as Mark Owen. Bissonnette doesn’t blur his face and this doesn’t sound like Bissonnette. So was Bissonnette lying? Is O’Neill lying? Is this guy lying? Who is Red? Did Red really pull the trigger? Did they canoe his face? If so, was it O’Neill?

  • @BlackDogOriginal

Red killed him, Matt Bissonette shot him second, Rob O’Neill canoed him. Screwed up the picture release.

A lot of people seem to be upset with how much Jack is talking in this interview. It’s important to remember that Mark is not a very vocal person, he has given very few interviews and is very much a quiet professional. So either filler conversation or long periods of awkward silence.

In Louisiana a lot, including myself are Half-Breeds. Native American & Nova Scotia Canadian French. Words like Sabine (native) Cachamae(native), and Ne*(French) there’s not an uncle or cousin that ever called me by name. It was Ne*… “G” supposed to be a racist word now. I’m a racist word. A proud one too.
