Head of the Snake Part 3: The Raid - Danger Close with Jack Carr

  • In May of 2011, Mark Owen crossed the Afghanistan-Pakistan border on a mission to capture/kill Osama bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaeda - to decapitate “The Head of the Snake.”
But that night in Abbottabad, Pakistan is just a part of Mark’s story.
In this special four-part series of Danger Close, Jack sits down for an extended interview with Mark to discuss the story you haven’t heard. Starting with Mark’s childhood in a remote Alaskan community to his early days in the SEAL Teams to 9/11 and the sustained combat that followed to his selection and training for a team at the highest echelons of special operations, this is Mark Owen unfiltered, candid, and uncensored. Mark would go on to take part in high-profile operations like the mission to rescue Captain Richard Phillips from Somali pirates and the search for Bowe Bergdahl. He would later work his way up a stairwell in a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan and into a hallway where the most wanted terrorist in the world waited…
But, as Jack and Mark discuss, the aftermath of the raid would not only change the public profile of Naval Special Warfare, it would also alter the course of Mark’s life in ways he could have never anticipated.
IRONCLAD and SIG Sauer proudly present, The Head of the Snake: The Killing of UBL, a special Danger Close event.
    About Part 3: The Raid
In part three of the Head of the Snake series, Jack and Mark do a deep dive into the raid that killed Osama bin Laden-no matter what you may have seen in the movies, this is a story with details you’ve likely never heard before.
Not only did last minute changes in Washington nearly cause a disaster for Mark and his team, but we also learn the methods used to infiltrate and clear the fortified compound. Jack also learns why the details of Bin Laden’s death can tell us so much about his life.

This is so incredible…..he, and you, are so humble. My heart goes out to this Alaska boy. Things he says resonate his growing up experience.
….chokes me up. So many points. And, both of you are so articulate. Not only in what you say, but in what you don’t say also.
    “The good idea fairies”…good analogy.
I pray he/both of you…take a month or so….spend time on the Kusko, the Tikchik, float the Noatak, Chandalar Lake…(lots of bug dope). It has been an extremely long experience…..you have fought the good fight….. Grandmother point of view. Godspeed. Thank you for sharing. These experiences need to be told.

@@j.t.patton7820 I have the the book “The Operator” ( Rob O’Neill’s book) and have read it twice. I’ve seen many of Robs podcasts, interviews and seminars (most of which are very similar, he tells basically, the same story every time! With varying degrees of detail…)
With that being said, I’ve never heard Rob say he killed the man on the 2nd floor stairs (aka Khalid, right?) nor does he ever claim to be running point. Until arrIval on the 3rd floor.’ The way Rob describes it, is; after “Chalk Two”( (Mark Owen) crashes, and “Chalk One” (Robs chopper) lands outside the compound. They make their way to the compound Gate, and thats when his breacher has a failed breach (false door/ brick wall), once they make entry into compound.. my understanding is that basically it was all by happenstance who’d be the first man to pop Bin Laden, and likely would be in any other mission. At any rate, after the point man drops Khalid, I’m just going to assume 2nd in line was Mark Owen, as 3rd was Rob, it just so happened that Rob had no choice but to double tap that tall fuck! When the first 2 in the train were still clearing And then what y’all seem to forget, is as a team, they next guy is going to be throwing lead down range until the threat is over. I believe Occam’s Razor is in play here. So y’all can believe what ya want. I’m sure while Rob technically “Split” Bin Laden’s “Whig” first and Mark Owen was secondary to stitch him up. It just makes sense to me. I’m sure after the fact it’s easy to the facts twisted! Just my two cents

Amazing interview. I’ve read the book - twice. But the interview offered a more personal and unique perspective. Unbelievable, after all those years of service at the highest level and being a part of the pinnacle mission of the century, he gets a misspelled plaque and nothing else. Staggeringly undervalued. Just a f****ing cog in the wheel man. I’m a paramedic. Occasionally people will come up to me while I’m on duty say, “Thank you for your service.” And I appreciate that. But what I do on a daily basis doesn’t even compare. I’m not willingly putting my life on the line. I’ve never seen my friends killed. I can’t imagine losing my partner. I’d be wrecked. All I can do is tell you I do not envy the sacrifices you’ve made. I’m not sure I have the fortitude to endure all that. And, thank you so much for serving.

This story has been out for years. The only thing it tells me is that the story the govt allowed Rob O'Neal to tell may be a lie. This guy clearly told this story to make Rob look like a liar. Sure the overall story is the same, but this guy refuses to say who pulled the trigger, and clearly gives a different story of how Big Laden was actually killed. He is only telling this story to create doubt on what Rob did. Rob may be the one lying, but don't be a chicken shit get on a podcast and discuss this with the person you may or may not be lying about. Same thing with Marcus Luttrell and his story. He has told it for yrs, but little shit changes. He claimed fighting 150 men, others who came later said the Intel said 10-12 guys. Also the guy who saved Marcus also tells a different story than him. The military allows these stories to come out. However they tell the story the way they want to make military sound amazing to young me so they join. It's propaganda just like Germany and Russia do

I don't think either of them are really seeking fame and fortune, as both really emphasis it was a team effort. The fact that Matt never saw UBL standing behind his wife makes me think he might not have seen the whole picture. I did find it interesting that neither book really referenced the other guy - almost like they didn't exist in their respective stories

@L.E.B they have definitely had far more than their share of disgrace but I think as a whole, there are far more good dudes in the SEALS than bad. Leadership failed to nip that shit in the bud when it started. I think the administration at the time used them for publicity and NSW leaned into it as well. Part 4 digs into this a bit as well. Just imagine if CAG had done Cpt Phillips or Bin Dickface. We wouldn't know much about either operation and the mystique behind "Delta" would have grown even more.

The point man (Red) deserves the credit for the actual Bin Laden kill. He not only killed Bin Laden he tackled the two women with him and moved them back into the room Bin Laden was in. The women could have had suicide bombs and he would have given his life by absorbing the blast, but saving his fellow seal behind him and any making their way up the stairs to that 3rd floor.

O’Neil said his beard was grayer than what he thought it would be. I’m confused at to why there are 3 different stories. O’Neil said he poured water over his face to clear the blood and meat & then held his head together and his gloves are in the pictures in Langley of UBL’s face, (or what was left). I’m almost positive if you asked all 20+ of these guys what details they remember that probably 95% of them would have different stories. That’s just how life is in intense situations. I mean when me and my boys talk about old baseball, football, basketball, or livestock show memories we have different recounts of these memories that were major events/memories in our lives. Now imagine being in the top .01% of the best fighting force on the entire planet Earth on the biggest mission in the history of war fighting. Not to mention in a foreign land that they weren’t authorized to be in… oh and that thing called adrenaline.. I’d imagine it’s impossible for them to all have the same story. And imo it doesn’t really matter. Like it matters zero percent, they were a TEAM & they were Seal Team 6 doing this every night on every deployment. So fuck the lamos that attack any one dudes story. Their bravery & badassery will never change. GG’s you guys, we are proud of you guys.

The details around the stories are weird Andy Stumpf said that amongst that team there’s no misunderstandings...but it’s different in the public for some reason and I kinda think he got that from Jack Carr

Great interview. Also would like to point out and I think he wanted to make it clear but not really say anything but that Rob O'Neill wasn't the shooter. He said the point man walked in the room and bin laden was on the ground. Then he said the point man would never come out and talk about it and he's still in. Assuming he's still at that command, Pentagon or something imagine all these people walking around you not knowing how much of a badass you are that you're the guy who whispered Khalid then pops him walks up the steps then kills his dad. Fucking badass I know it will never happen but boy I would love to his story about his life/career. Salute.

I've met both Marcus Luttrell and Rob O'Neil in person at their respective speaking engagements. I have a very strong theory on why Mark Owen's account and Rob Oneil's accounts are different and why nobody has come forward (from Dev.Group) to criticize Rob Oneil. They all know exactly how it went down. There's absolutely ZERO details that are fuzzy or confused between the team that was on mission. They debrief and discuss every single second of these ops. I do believe that, the team either allowed or elected Rob Oneil to be "the one" who took UBL down. One of them needed to take the claim...take the press....take the pressure....tell the story and I think out of that entire team on the 3rd floor that night, Rob Oneil was the best guy to be the guy. He's smart, extremely articulate and sharp. He's charming and funny and can sell it. Rob knows his story isn't actual, and he's ok with it and so is the rest of the team; however, Owen has always been a bit of a rogue player. He won't come right out and burn Rob....because he knows it would blow up on himself, but he gives us enough hints of what actually happened. We may never really know...and I would bet that is exactly what the NAVY brass wants.

One book was cleared by the DoD and one wasn’t. If you watch “The Team House”, they interview a former squadron commander for devgru who says Biss never should’ve written the book. When asked about Robs book, he said he didn’t know Rob wrote a book. “Are you riding for the brand or on the brand?” was what he used to describe Biss’ book. I have no horse in the race I just hate that while there’s so much circumstantial evidences people are still going back and forth. Watch every video appearance, read every interview. Anything about the raid. It really looks clear that Rob is who he says he is.

Both guys claim to have shot him in their original stories. Mark came out way before Rob ever did telling the story. Mark and Rob both wrote books about their times in the Teams. Mark, from what I remember, was sued or forced somehow to stop with the book, I don't remember the specifics, but he got into trouble for writing it and making money on it. Rob wrote a book as well, it was approved by the DoD. I've listened to Rob's account numerous times and his delivery of the story is pretty consistent, just a little bit of detail varies per time he discusses it. Mark's account to me is the fabricated version, the level of detail discusses the raid in and how UBL was taken down leads me to believe he was on the raid and is taking AAR info and making up his own version. I think Rob is the one who shot UBL, to me he seems more believable.
I don't think we'll ever really know until every guy from the raid is retired and knows that nothing can happen to them for discussing it. There's been plenty of other Development Group guys that were there that haven't talked about it much. I'd love to see Rob, Mark, Will, Terry and Bill all in one room to discuss it. Chances are it will never happen, for whatever reason. It does make for a very interesting comments section though!
