It’s baffling the number of cases so similar to this one that remain unsolved, both young men and women that go missing after starting to act strangely in some kind of way. Very unsettling 😕
Probably because people suffering from any sort of sudden onset mental health crisis are far more at risk of suicide and vulnerable to multiple types of criminal activity.

When people go off the rails, maybe some of them are good at appearing "normal" or less afflicted than they really are.
First break psychosis or mania typically hits in the late teens/20s. Odd behaviour intensifies.

@mike severino Yes, that seemed very contradictory, unless she, herself turned her mother in and felt guilty.
It shouldn't sound sketchy, she had a history of mental illness . She would have suffered with feelings we cannot imagine.
Yes I would tell my child don't be silly this is what I am here for Stay put mommy is coming to get you and the mom did go to get her but it's. Heartbreaking that mom was only 2 hours late from her last sighting .There are many that go to New York and get lost amongst the homeless.😢
As one living with schizophrenia since the age of 28--I am now 65--I can relate to her sense of shame and inadequacy. I was hearing voices in my head telling me I was worthless and should kill myself. If she actually was psychotic she may have believed what her voices were telling her and felt she wasn't worthy of her mother's love. It's not rational.
"I'm not free until everyone is free"... and that bit about returning her energy to the stars.
She sounds sweet and very sensitive, also like she was fantasizing about leaving our mundane realm.

@@erikparent8176 I was in the shelter with her, besides her bed. She would meditate under a tree and take sunshine, she was very sensitive and beautiful in another state. Julien was stalking her in her job too, so she left the job and came to the shelter after. I believe he was threatening her and she was looking up with no way out.

The things she wrote were metaphysical and an indicator of a spritual awakening.
I experienced the same thing and one feels as though someone is watching you all the time.
Awareness expands from within and observes ones ego, thoughts and actions.
It can cause paranoia.
If she was being stalked she could have gone to the police, got a restraining order, end of story.
I'm convinced her angst was a result of losing her identity and is refered too as Dark night of the Soul.
I'd search some spritual centers, ashrams or Buddhist monasteries for her, just in case.
I mean I really resonated with that line. And the “or whatever” at the end. Sigh*

A young person is on their own and just goes downhill RAPIDLY. And is gone . . .
Because most mental breaks are when people are in their 20s.

Yeah, the dude who followed her all the way from Perth has always seemed sketch to me.
And he said he was in the same town, by coincidence. And he just happened to 'bump into her' shortly before she went missing, by coincidence. I don't believe either situation was a coincidence. That could account for her worsening symptoms, especially paranoia. She saw her stalker!

@@JustDr.S Agreed. It isn't "paranoia" when someone is actually stalking you, as he openly admitted to. Lol. It's actually a rational fear based in REALITY. But, two things can be true at the same time; one can be both experiencing some type of metal struggle/illness AND be being victimized. As the doctor points out, people with mental health issues are often more vulnerable to this kind of thing. I've seen it first hand myself.
Also, I wonder, in light of the charges levied against her mother and brother (even if the charges against her mother were dropped), if something in the family history created another real fear, if not just significant hesitation, to go be with her mother and that's why she kept reaching out but waffling.
Yes,I believe that this has not been investigated enough.if he was following her,the stress of that could bring on an episode,that is from lack of sleep.
This one's a reminder of the tragic impact of a mental health crisis on the lives of people who experience this level of distress. Thank you for presenting that reality especially in light of some romanization of what may have happened.

I would almost want to move to Delaware just so I could have him as my therapist. It would be great.
My brother was diagnosed with schizophrenia in his late 20s. He had a bunch of us siblings and a parent, however preferred to be homeless... I think most of it had to do with his paranoia. Anyways took alot of work to get him in a routine with meds but once he did he recounted feeling like he wasn't himself. Thanks for covering this, first i've heard of her❤ mental illness' are difficult to conquer for those involved and loved ones

This happened to a relative of my husband. we unfortunately got a front row seat to this. Among the worst things was seeing how others in the community treated this beautiful, talented, caring soul. My heart breaks for his mother and his siblings.

I keep hoping he will reappear, and I look for news about him every oncevin a while, but even if it's a different person in your case I'm so sorry for what happened and how he was treated. @@thatsalt1560 Sadly, I don’t know What happened to that young man. My husband’s relatives are Finnish and we lived in Helsinki at the time. His second cousin has been quite disabled since the onset. Truly sad. We live in Sweden right now, but as Iwahve said haven’t heard of What had happened with the kid in Hallsberg. We have one here in Ljungby that up and vanished too. Just so sad😞
She was being stalked by Julien from Ontario to Victoria, and then in her place of work in the restaurant so she left the work to the shelter, whether yes or no, we need unity and this is always very difficult. Sending you a big hug.

@@JustDr.S Support housing in BC may not have had the "mission" to even admit her daughter had ever been in their system, due to LEGAL privacy issues and the "Mission Statement" most rescue homes have to act under the Provincial jurisdicTIon LEGALLY.
Such a mystery and always so tragic when a seemingly troubled young person disappears. Thanks for your take and for covering a Canadian case.

I felt so worried about her while he was telling her story. She was extremely vulnerable. One of my friends has a brother with severe mental illness. He doesn't want to admit it and he doesn't want to take his medication. It's hard.
It’s so important to de-stigmatize mental illness so people can feel safer reaching out for support and understanding.
I don't know why but I also have a problem with taking medication. I know I need it, but i think i hate the fact that i need medicine to function so i don't take it. I wonder if this is normal for mentally ill people?
I think it's normal for people who grew up in a culture that keeps telling them that one needs to be strong no matter what. If your body or mind needs help - you are defective, not normal, a bad person who is being punished for their wickedness. This is the message we get all the time. There is a stigma around vulnerability. This stigma holds the capitalist society together. Imagine if we collectively believed that mental health issues, health problems can happen to anyone, in many cases are unavoidable and nobody's fault? We would need a competely different model of society then, focused on education, healthcare, well-being...

Me too, I'm nearly crying for this video, is deep in many levels.
Seemed a very strange place for humor (regarding a STALKER, no less!) but I too appreciated it as I needed a break from the grief of it all....
That was a suicide note to my mind. She said she would be dead when the reader found her note. Then she describes death from a non religious mindset - her energy goes back to being pure energy, back to the stars. Given how close she was to a trail, that she left all her stuff behind, seems to me she went in there and died. And has never been found. Or maybe she was found, by the guy who used her card. Easier to explain to the police that you found the card randomly lying on the ground than you came across a dead body and rifled through the corpse's pockets to steal. That note is a suicide note from someone who can't quite bring herself to use the words. It is extraordinarily difficult to verbalise those feelings when there is such shame attached.

@@kkheflin3 She didn’t go to prison, the charges were dropped. Her son was charged with drug dealing and money laundering,and I believe she was charged as if she knew of his crimes and was complicit in them.
I know someone who left a state in in Eastern USA, flew to Texas, was found in a rental car unconscious on the Rio Grandd and brought to a hospital, released, went into Mexico and over the course of 53 days was suffering intense paranoia and delusions yet somehow made his away all the way across Mexico (despite multiple police encounters this person was also deemed to be causing no harm) until a family member flew out and found him sheltering, scared in Tijuana. He was brought back to the US and diagnosed with bipolar disorder and having had a psychotic episode. This Emma situation feels so similar and breaks my heart.
Dr Grande, this is such a sad.sad case but your delivery of light and shade in every video you do is BRILLIANT.

🇨🇦 My daughter knew Emma, and frequented the restaurant where she worked in Victoria. Such a sad, sad story. Every mother’s nightmare.... receiving an anguished call from your young daughter and not making it there in time to be with her. I don’t know that I could ever survive that kind of pain. Disappearances are so intriguing-thank you. Asha Degree, a nine-year-old girl who seemingly vanished of her own volition on a stormy North Carolina night, is a particularly interesting case.

This reminds me that we send our children away to college at an age they are more likely to develop mental illness, like schizophrenia, without the social support needed to save them.

The stress of moving away from home and into college will often be the trigger for a persons first psychotic break. I worked in a mental health hospital for 10 years and unfortunately I have seen a lot. It’s devastatingly heartbreaking.
This one's a sordid tale. One of those where it seems like there SHOULD be enough information to have found a solution...

I feel such a lot of connection to this case.I think it's because I was living in Victoria at the same time as Emma, it's also when my mental health deteriorated very severely and we're also nearly the same age with her being only a year older than I am. I ended up moving back home after about 2ish years in Vic, fortunately for me I did have something of a support network and home was just a few hours drive up Island. I wonder what would have happened if I'd been far from home with little support like Emma. I struggle to get help for my mental illness and wonder if it would have made any difference if she'd tried knowing how broken, understaffed, underfunded and difficult the system is to navigate given my personal experience. I think I just look at Emma and whatever happened to her and see how easily it could have been me if my circumstances had been just a bit different. Having my mental health deteriorate and not understanding what was happening or why, losing my ability to function was a very frightening thing and I can't imagine how it would be to also be in an incredibly vulnerable position like living on the streets or in a shelter. I've mostly come to terms with my mental illness now and have learned to manage my expectations but when I'm dealing with a lot of stress if worsens considerably and it's still scary to this day not really being able to look after myself without considerable help and support from the people around me.

I wondered if attraction came first but someone behaving very odd becomes both entertainment and possibly a rescue ( and happily ever after thought but not expressed. ). It was after the fellow realized his presence might be frightening to her, and contributed to her missing status, because he never had any bad intentions, just attraction and absent minded curiosity until she slipped away. Dumb to call himself a stalker but humans make bad word choices and bad choices in trying to connect.
I have followed this case for a while.
Having lived in the area and understanding the spiritual practices Emma was exposed to it is possible she literally left her old life behind.
This is very common.
I however feel the complete disappearance to date suggests foul play.
I hope one day answers are found for the family.😢🙏

Edit: Just googled for an update. Her mother Shelley, is shocked it’s been 8 years with no new information. She just wants news, good or bad, about Emma. That has to be such a painful existence hoping your child is alive but understanding the probability isn’t very good. The not knowing, hopeful one day to sinking down the next, is so awful to contemplate.

People, even stalkers, have a propensity to tell the police the truth. But, his admission, does shed a light on Emma’s so called paranoia. It’s hard to be labeled paranoid, when people confess to stalking her.
The other point is the police were called and they quite correctly determined she was not a threat to herself or others in a legal sense, but she is now missing, probably forever. There should be another level of assessment on a social/mental level where someone in destress can be evaluated in a stress free environment. (Not, in the back of a police car.) A simple question,, “What’s bothering you so much you are not wearing shoes in 45 degree weather?” A terrible tragedy.
@@prant8998 Agree 100% For the most part police officers are not well trained in mental health in my experience. Or detecting signs of an impending crisis. Asking vague questions while sitting in a police car doesn't cut it. They need to ask SPECIFIC questions that are pointed as you pointed out which would be much more beneficial in determining whether someone is in the midst of a mental health crisis.

Hmmm, I've had psychosis and paranoia at some point in my life and I was in therapy for quite some time.
If someone would've called the cops on me for doing nothing wrong, but simply standing at a corner/crossing and not walking, while I'm paranoid, this certainly would've p!ssed me off severely, frightened me endlessly and likely would've thrown me over the edge mentally and emotionally...
I hate to say this, but people are literally brainwashed into calling the cops for everything and expecting they'd know what to do/say and how to react.
& I'm far from defending the cops, bc if I'd love them so much, I certainly wouldn't write, that their "intervention" would've thrown me over the edge.
I was thinking of the Lam case here and you mentioned it in the video. There was a 2009 Malibu missing person case of Mitrice Richardson. Descriptions of her behavior before her disappearance seem very similar.
The police just dumped a vulnerable young woman out on her own. She could have been saved. 😢
I read up on that. The police told her mother that she was ok, and then they let her out in the wee hours of the morning in the middle of nowhere. The DA who promised to help her parents was quite useless too.

This case is sad. I am surprised that I haven't heard of it before as I live in Vancouver; many individuals in similar situations end up living in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.
My goal in life is to one day get analyzed by the good doctor and featured on this channel. Hopefully for a good reason though, and not a criminal one, haha!

From an article:
Until a new witness, simply identified as William, told Emma’s mother, Shelley Fillipoff, that he had seen her on the morning of Nov. 29 while driving to work.
“He did have a great deal of struggle not saying anything,” Fillipoff said. “His family urged him not to come forward because he might be implicated, but he came forward anyway.”
William spotted Emma while driving to Saanich from Esquimalt, driving up Admirals Road after she jumped off the street onto the sidewalk and seemed to be in distress.
William pulled over, asked if she was okay and found her to be very afraid of something he couldn’t see. William offered to give her a ride into town on his way to work. After she got in the car, he said she was very calm, and asked William to take her to her friend’s place in Colwood.
William was late to his new job, and offered instead to drop her off closer to Colwood.
At 5:15 a.m. William dropped Emma off at the intersection of Craigflower Road and Admirals Road near the Petro Canada gas station.

Thank you for covering this case from my home town -- and not in a sensationalized way. Victoria is relatively welcoming for people who are homeless and have mental illnesses. They are usually not hassled and there is not much the police can do, unless the person is in extreme distress. If I were there now, I could find several people with more severe symptoms than Emma seemingly had, on Government Street alone.
This is only a guess, but IMO the most likely scenario is that she fell in the water near the Galloping Goose trail (it runs all the way from downtown to Colwood, and parts of it are by the water), drowned, and her body was swept out to sea by the tide.

I totally agree with you about the existence of a mental health issue in the Emma Fillipoff case, e.g. a psychotic process with comorbid deterioration in social and emotional functioning... and her dread to face her mother in that state. This evolving mental health issue made Emma vulnerable to suicide.. and being taken advantage of, e.g. kidnapped by bad actor/s. Thank you for your clear and concise analysis.

I’m glad to see you have assessed Emma’s case. I’m quite late in stumbling across this though. I see today they’ve very recently released an age progression photo (now 38 years of age) and that there is a new documentary that’s been released or soon to be released.
With all due respect I couldn’t help but note that not once did you mention British Columbia. You indeed mentioned many key locations in Victoria and that it’s a long way from Perth Ontario, but considering it’s a missing persons case and many people do not know a lot about Canada, I thought it may have been helpful to mention that Victoria is on Canada’s west coast in British Columbia. Victoria is also the capital of BC.
I’ve been fascinated with this case for years and I live not too far from Victoria about 90 miles north of Vancouver BC. I’ve encountered many people in my life who don’t know their Canadian geography well at all. I guess that’s why it stood out to me.

(She is refering to spritual freedom, which is delayed until ones ego is transended and all will be free only when the collective ego is transended.

(This is an indication of the subtle spiritual body and most likely the Astral plane. The difference is the gross physical plane and the subtle floating energy of the Astral plane.
She's not sure of graduation.)
3. " watching dying stars" (she has some Astrophysical knowledge about stars.
All stars will die and most after about 5 billion years.
Some will end in a Supernova and others White Dwarfs.
Her explanation seems to mean she will observe this star process in the expanded perception of a spiritual body.)
4. "Dreaming milky dreams"" The entire Cosmos and all other planes, are dreams of pure conciousness.
The Astral plane Appears milky white or translucent.)
5. "Shadow dancing on your time lines"
( Shadow dancing can refer to as being a Ghost, but she might mean as spirit.
Spirit has a different view of "time" which is very much expanded, in higher planes and can be seen in totality.
Past, present, and future may all be viewed at once, which may point to the reference of dancing on time lines)
6. Her reference to being watched, in conjunction with her understanding of metaphysics, implies a seperation between her ego and the observer/ awareness.
This is common and confusing during a shift in conciousness.

The Fifth Estate also did a video today about a Psychiatric hospital in Ontario that I think would be interesting to hear from you about! The doctor who made the tests was really wild, he was very crass when speaking about the patients and his programs.
Mental illness it's a never ending life of loss,love,wishes n dreams shattered, for all who love the stricken, my heart aches for my brother but he doesn't want to kno, we not his illness made him ill?! Families are shattered in every sense! We all pay a little everyday, doesn't go away, but we trudge onward always a soul missing at the table! Sad😔

I’ve been waiting for you to analyze this case. Emma’s story is very compelling to me. It’s also complex. It’s just a story that stays with me.
If only she’d kept her passport, I could relax in the possibility that she’s alive somewhere else in the world. I don’t think that she could live in public without being found since this case is so widely known. She may be in seclusion but I don’t think she was in a state of self sufficiency when she vanished.
She wanted to rid herself of her identity!
