  • After 180 plus hours in Barotrauma I thought it was about time to do a proper review of this 2D submarine simulation and survival game.
This review will look at the game, what it got right, what it did wrong, its potential and looking to the future at some sneak peak items from the developers.

The real discipline in the game is when you play as captain and drive manually through the whole campaign (currently doing so with 3 others, halfway through the great sea)

It's not hard to do but you do have to remember to stop yourself during combat. Personally I just set it to autopilot and maintain position and then click places and let the sub move itself. I lag to much to play with actual people so I have to stick with Ai crew and I got enough to worry about with them.
But props to you for even attempting it.

    Awsome review man!
On a side note though, I kind of sensed some DNA of Darkwoods in BT. Like- the sense of dread I feel when turning every corner in an undersea cave, really takes me back to when I was exploring some mission-critical decrepit house in Darkwoods with mere seconds of daylight left on the clock. Same vibes man. Even the home invasion aspects are there (in a sense). Only thing that's missing is the day-night cycle. But that wouldn't fit in with BT so no complaints there.

They already have a lore reason- warm water increases the variety of life an area can support. Have water warmth flow between ports, so different routes create different problems related to temperature, including flushing weaker monsters into larger creatures' caverns, forming an ecosystem that adjusts difficulty.

I think there should be a caveat to any review of this game: the multiplayer is great as long as you're not trying to play with random strangers because this game has the most easily-sabotaged mechanics I've ever seen in my entire life and trolls _will_ take advantage of that for their own amusement.
Not only is there no way to keep players from immediately destroying your sub in any of a hundred ways upon joining but on top of that, the devs actually encourage this sort of behavior with game modes that reward the saboteur with a 'victory' if they achieve their objective of ruining your game... Not that anyone needed encouragement to do this because as best as I can tell, about 30 percent of this game's player population has absolutely no intention of engaging with it or other players seriously and are only there to get their kicks messing up other people's missions.
I'm not blind to the fact that part of the 'fun' with this game is the backstabbing that can take place but when you have absolutely no means of avoiding it (and it's so endemic in the community that it's not uncommon to have to routinely replay missions five or six times in a row just to finish them), it can get pretty tiresome.
There's an old saying: "Hell is other people." This game sums that experience up pretty well.

Your talk of an MMO Space Flight Sim reminded me of an Online Aether Ship game I love called "Worlds Adrift" that had so much promise to it until the creators decided to just abandon it. You would build a ship, keep it repaired as it flew around through storms and vast distances, and even PvP combat. If your ship was too big it was hard to crew alone and multiple players each with their own tech specialization could drastically change the ship....
I was one of the only players I knew who specialized in Cannons and its because they were so damned heavy along with their ammo that having one could scupper a small ship.

The game at this stage is decent, yet I find the campaign (most people play the campaign both single and in multiplayer than any other) lacking. The entire game mode is literally going left to right, point A to point B, doing missions in between. I hope fakefish (or whoever the devs are) will consider adding more to the main story, possibly making the game open world where you don't have to do through a stupid menu screen each time you dock. Adding more to outposts than just shopping will contribute to the games level of detail and most if it to be explorable, or have some sort of significance to draw attention. Maybe adding other submarines you can interact with besides the pirates will be fun as well. The campaign is literally the only things the devs have to focus on because the community will add to the other game modes. Idk what the devs have in store the next update, hopefully it will be good.

  • @typicalasianguy1805
    @typicalasianguy1805 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I hope in the future this game will add in ships that will travel around. I have some ideas how these wandering ships would work.
The ships will either be one of the factions in Barotrauma. Depending on your reputation the ships will react to you differently like if it is a trade ship and your reputation is poor. It would most likely run away from you or attack you if you get too close while fleeing. They would probably be backed up by small attack ships.
You could be a full on sea pirate and raid ships (I hope that sounds good).
If it is a military ship it would go on a full on attack on you and constantly pinging you. I feel like I have some classifications for the type of ships you’ll meet.
    1. Attack ships in general, the classes would be (destroyer) (stealth) (Dreadnought) (Trapper) (cruiser) and (carrier)
(Destroyer)- Being a small light submarine, they are quick and loud, being able to be heard in passive sonar quite easily. And as the name suggests, they are capable of destroying your ship quite easily as they are armed with explosive weapons like rail guns. However due to their small size they are easy to sink and kill. They are also more likely to flee in combat.
(Stealth) These ships are slightly in common with destroyer class submarines as in they will kill you. However they are unlikely to ping and keep their engines silent when tracking a target. They also have the ability to release decoys that will emit sound, or pings and another decoy that disrupts active sonar. They only release it once spotted if you ping them.
These submarines will be armed with the new torpedo weapons and with no other weapons expect for discharge coils. The torpedos can be either unguided or guided. Although not sure how to implement the guided torpedo in the game (might be too op.) Torpedos are pretty silent even when launched/fired and may be too late to maneuver your submarine since it is hard to see on passive sonar. However that depends on the tracking of the torpedo. There are two types of tracking for torpedos, passive/active. Active torpedos will constantly send out pings trying to look for you which you can see on sonar or hear, Passive however only tracks you if your submarine is loud so staying quiet is the key to avoid these torpedos unless they are headed straight towards you. To which, good luck.
(Dreadnoughts) I imagine these like the typhon attack class submarines, big and bulky but more heavily armed. They are also louder than destroyers and can be heard past sonar limits. Also being very slow.
Having multiple rail guns and coil guns they can be rather formidable and hard to sink due to crew size. I don’t think there is much to add other than they are more aggressive, and ping often. Although I guess there could be a new rail gun shell they could use. I’ve seen it with modded rail guns shells and basically it pierces the shell of a submarine and explodes inside killing the crew kind of like an AP shell with an explosive filter. It doesn’t add in a lot of flooding unfortunately but devastating to crew. I also think maybe adding in a 16-18 inch cannon would be lovely, mabye perhaps too op as they will tear through the hull and explode inside. One more thing, they also use more dangerous and rare ammunition and are full of loot.
(Cruiser)- in short they are a balance between a dreadnought and destroyer. Having small caliber guns and few rail guns and a good decent speed and a good decent submarine size.
(Trapper)- more of a support submarine to help other subs, in short. They lay down traps that can be destroyed. Either mines or a new type of depth charge that has a fuse, set to a timer when it explodes. The size of the sub would be rather small, and is quieter than the destroyer but still loud enough to hear on sonar.
(Carrier)- a support submarine that is easy to take out by itself, but harder in a group. These submarines are large and bulky almost like the dreadnoughts and also being extremely loud. They carry large drones that either uses coil guns or depth charges. Or both. The drones are easy to take out with basic coil guns. Although they are extremely fast, comparable to spinelings.
So I introduce a new weapon that is an actual modded turret called the chain gun. Firing light projectiles that will instantly hit their targets will make it easier to take out the carriers main threat. Carriers do also have their own guns, but only light chain guns and nothing of a bigger caliber.
I do have a few ideas for non attack submarines. Trading vessels, maybe having different variants of trading vessels. Such as fuel vessels that carry mass amounts of fuel rods or diesel just in case you were running out. Or main trading vessels that trade items for other items instead of marks. Then we have the merchant ship that acts kind of like a small outpost but only selling/buying items. All of these ships will stop if you get close to them allowing your to access their airlock or dock right into them. That is if you have a neutral reputation or higher.
I do feel like what I am saying is redundant. Maybe it isn’t necessary to add in all of these things, but this is something I see that is kind of cool. I always disliked being alone out there in the cold seas and seeing other ships passing by who I can interact with would be mighty cool. Another problem could be lore, idk much about it. And performance issues, I know Barotruama for its bad performance and adding in a convoy of submarines would probably bring my fps down to 5-10.
Also probably adding in a new faction with pirates who will give you raid missions where you hunt a convoy with other pirates.
Stealth I feel would actually be more useful if it were against sub vs sub and I wished this game was more focused around stealth.

I would say no, as there are things you want the bots to do and not to do. If it was all fully automated then they would be loading nukes and firing them at close range (which they try to do anyways).
And doing cave missions in the later biomes without backup is really challenging. You will want to order them to grab weapons and follow you outside.

Got the game last friday And already put in over 20 Hours. Tried multiplayer but the lobbys, just like any other mp game, Are very hit or miss. Mp Is the way the games meant to be played yet my first lobby i joined immidiately i was met with 2 screeching females. 2nd one i joined had a god complex captain So i put an smg mag in him And left to continue singleplayer.
Ill definetly be joining the discord And see if i can find a decent crew. Probably not tho since there aint many people playing it there was like 30 servers to join most with like 2 people on.
Its a very niche game And Its nice but sólo theres just So much micromanagement which does little to nothing with the braindead ai.After these 20 hours im losing interest unfortunately, got it with a massive discount off g2a tho so Its all good.

So what I got from this is barotrauma is a good game overall, but solo like, mid. And it's likely to get even better. Nice.

To be fare to the game your not really supposed to play the game solo you can play solo but in my opinion it’s not the best way to play the game.

the MMO spaceship based idea where the journey is as dangerous as the mission is 100% what i want in a game... i wanted it in elite, never gona happen... games like space crew kinda do that a bit, but not well enough... barotrauma kinda does do that but not MMO and the graphics are a bit..... ehhh.... so yeah, still hanging out for it.

      Ikr lol
And it's like, Barotrauma is just "ruthless" to your nerves. It's addictive af, but at the same time you're not gonna sleep well, or at all, either by playing it too long or having nightmares of mudraptors next door. lol
Edit: Need mental healthcare? Here have some opium because I have a clear understanding of the medical system. lmao

      Yeah well... You sort of are right, he was more focused on Baro fans than new people visiting the channel. I'll do it for you though;
Barotrauma is a 2d sci-fi submarine survival game with horror elements.
You are one of the crewmembers on a submarine, under the huge layer of ice, in the (hypothetical irl) liquid water oceans of Jupiter's moon, Europa.
This subsurface ocean would of course not be complete without hostile, and pretty damn terrifying lifeforms inside of it, that hate nothing more than the noise humans and their machines make in their natural habitat. These alien things, commonly referred to as monsters by Europan folk, are the primary source of danger on the moon. Or actually... that depends. Sometimes your own friends are the real enemy. Sometimes you yourself mess up piloting the sub, crashing into ice then sinking to the bottom. You may also be surprised by various different things you didn't expect to be able to go boom, but do apparently go boom... I don't want to spoil anything, as exploration is also a very fun part of it. This game has a lot of potential, but there's already a work in progress, but fairly decent campaign mode, multiplayer, singleplayer, sandbox mode, submarine editor, and many more things to do. There's traitor mode in multiplayer, which is basically Among Us but a lot more complex. Then there's griefers at times, but that's just part of any multiplayer game. There's also newbies, to whom the game can be quite brutal and unforgiving... In cruel but, let's face it, kinda cool or even funny, unexpected ways. The Happy Wheels-like (it's a funny browser game, focused on ragdoll physics and humans disintegrating in ridiculous ways) dismemberment system and the creatures hunting each other, almost simulating a whole ecosystem, is just the cherry on top of the cake. lol
Barotrauma is suprisingly complex as well, you can almost never run out of new things to learn. I'd say it's definitely worth a try, been playing it for countless hours, completed the whole long-ass campaign (it's so long only like 3% or so players have that achievement!), built various submarines and bases, tested various features, and it still hasn't ran out of new things it has to offer. Updates are fairly common nowadays as well. There's also mods n all that. And of course, it lives up to its name by death from pressure damage being a thing, and it's f*cking brutal, just watching all your homies desperately get into diving suits that resist the pressure, and all they find is an empty locker, a sec later their lungs implode, then come the creatures and f*cking feast on their corpses... I', not even gonna list the various other ways you can die. lol
