- Barotrauma is a 2D co-op submarine simulator - in space, with survival horror elements.
That’s a mouthful, but it’s also accurate.
You’re not the chosen one on some do-or-die mission to save the world, you’re just part of a submarine crew - though that is an important position, since submarines are essentially the only way to move people and cargo around on this planet.
You can take on the role of whatever you want, Captain, electrical or mechanical engineer, medic, security officer, or a jack-of-all trades, master-of-none, assistant.
While your inherent duty should in theory apply to your class of choice, nothing is class-exclusive. Your chosen role simply dictates your starting skill levels and items. Do something for long enough and regardless of class, you’ll get a point in that skill.
This game has quickly become one of my favorites, having already put an embarrassing amount of hours into the singleplayer and am currently dumping most of my time into the multiplayer.
It might not be for everyone, but this is definitely in my top 10 indie games of all time, and a definite buy.

It is said the husk parasite doesn’t really take control of your nervous system or anything like that, rather, it slowly hollows out your body, and uses your empty carcass as an exoskeleton. Thus the name “Husk”.

I may be a bit late but here's another bit of lore for the husk infection.
It does not infect anything bigger than a crawler or mudraptor or so I heard. Correct me if I'm wrong on this!
@@frostwyrm96 maybe in previous versions there was the carrier a husk infested sub but it was replaced by the thalamus so i dont know what the current canon is
this, i think its grows inside goes to your mouth before doing a internal lobotomy, witch is honestly terrifying since the last thing you probably feel is some gross tentacles inside your mouth before it slowly pierces your skull and brain

i always took this for some 2D steampunk game, but no one ever told me it was set in space.
I mean its set in space kind of like you are set in space right now, you know, on a planet.

This game is incredible, it tells great stories whilst still being a visually appealing and fun game.

In single player campaigns you should clear out all the enemies in a wreck first; then you can go back to your sub to pick up two storage containers (they look like briefcases) to loot everything of value in just one or two trips. Large items like ammo boxes and depth charges aren't worth their own trip unless it's special ammo. This will make the looting process much faster.
I typically use a storage crate full of toolbelts. Even better is it's easy to sell after in multiplayer (since you can only sell what you are carrying)
Honestly the coil gun ammo from wrecks honestly saved me and my friends ship more times then not and what we make sure we loot them
To be perfectly honest, I usually use a mod when doing Singleplayer that adds a small handful of wearable inventories, like a backpack for example. When there's more People with you, it usually isn't too hard to assemble a dive team to sweep the place in a trip or two, but alone it's agonizing how long it can take to manage everything. And of course even if you have radiation disabled, you still have the timer of however much fuel you've got until you have to restart the mission and try it again but faster.
You can also use a duffel bag, which is just a crate but you can hold two at the same time which is insane. However, the only way of obtaining it is commiting murder, maybe you have a clown onboard you dont like?
Do duffle bags spawn in singleplayer for dead AI? I remember a couple times having a bot die during a mission, with their body safe and sound on the ship, and it just kinda Vanished after docking.

Barotrauma is one of those games where you and your friends slowly descent into insanity and enjoy it. It follows mindset of “if you laugh the situation it’s that bad”. It supports both unserious and serious play styles, offering you all content it has as achievable with both of those. I remember playing with a friend who was new to our crew in Barotrauma so wasn’t very comfortable with us all and fairly fresh and in like 3 hours he ended up as an engineer who snatched several tobacco plants from wreck, welded himself in reactory and grew stuff to smoke in it for the entire game and we found out only when entire reactory was flooded. Everyone loved that guy and we always invited him to play with us later on
For the single player I use a stack size mod to make items stack in the inventory better and a back pack mod to alliviate the fact that my ai are basically useless outside the sub and literally useless for looting. I recommend this to all single players and in general to be able to perform more missions for your play time. And considering i have to fight alone and loot alone i consider it quite fair

Real quick something you didn't mention that is good for struggling rookies. Some enemies are just looking for a meal. And they don't care what it is. Kill one of their own and they'll start eating it giving you time to get away, repair, kill more, or whatever else you need to do. Secondly. This was the absolute best review for this game I have ever seen. Very comprehensive, to the point and felt longer than it actually was in the best possible way.
Felt like a professional in-depth game analysis that cost a lot to make. Very impressive video!

I would like to mention however, the abyss creatures don't have any relations to the shallower sea dwellers, nor are they final boss monsters. Although they do have a direct impact on the campaign map, they are more or less the guard dogs of the abyss. A punishment for unwise crews diving for rare resources found on islands or not taking care of leaks. But their brutal design does play into some very rewarding missions

Funny, from other videos I've saw I thought it was some kind of Mafia game in a deep sea setting. Thanks to the review now I know what it actually is.
It very much depends on who you play with and with what mindset you go in.
It could be if you wish to roleplay as that. That’s what I like about this game, the great stories you get from it.
There's a traitor mechanic that you can choose to enable or not.
small correction
EVERY medical item has a "Skill level" and it is effectively a "Do you meet it,Yes or No?"
as a example ; Morphine is 100% effective at medical 35 and at 34 or below it has higher addiction rates,less effectiveness and so on
If you want to read about this,head to the games files for medical items (says exact effects,exact requirements and so on,as well as other stuff)
Otherwise past 72 esh ,medical skill might as well say hard caps
Played the game for 4 hours. Decided to make my own sub. Made my own sub, it has 8 chainguns and 4 railguns, needs like 6 engineers to keep up. 10/10 would make AC130 Subship again.
8:00 you are supposed to bring a cargo crate which has massive space. You can easily clear a medium sized wreckage with only 2 trips using these.
I wish i had the patience to dig into this beast of a game.
But damn this review was captivating. We live in a great time when AAA titles suck donkey balls and the indie scene puts out incredible jewels.
i suggest hiring a shit ton of ai crewmates, this is somehow the only game where ai players are more efficient than human players. with enough crewmembers and a good understanding of the commands system, your sub will run like clockwork
Not even gonna lie, your video is the most detailed review I can find and it's the review I point all my friends to if they think about buying the game. I even come back to this vid with how well put together it is.

As a person who spends time in singleplayer your points on that mod(e) were spot on.
Luckily in the next update, we will get new commands for the AI to help with looting and carrying items and such
for ruins and submarines.

I came for more Barotrauma content, and I stayed for that incredible voice.
one thing about looting- when you loot a wreck you will generally find bodies laying around- if you put a tool belt on the body that's a whole other inventory's worth of loot you can drag around, and since its a body you can use your scooter at the same time. Between that and learning what loot has the greatest value it's totally possible to loot a one of the larger wrecks- including some ammo boxes- in 15-20 minutes tops
you can also drop a crate or ammo box in the corpses hands so you can do ammo runs with a scooter

alphabetagamer (and by extension manlybadasshero, who covers the same games alpha does, alot of the time) as well as the amazing Ssethtzeentach all do vids on more obscure games, alpha is the no-commentary walkthrough typ, manly has commentary but its just gameplay, and sseth is more of a review and never fails to make a game seem amazing and fun (helps that they typically are) so i suggest checking them out

Screaming & Drowning Simulator 2019. I freaking love this game, everything about it. And you're 100% right, this game THRIVES in multiplayer, grab some friends, grab some beers, put 4 hours aside and enjoy the absolute bonkers shenanigans while screaming and drowning in the dark depths under the ice.
This game is actually insanely fun. If you have some friends to play this with then you'll have a super fun time.
I enjoy it even in singleplayer. I don't have time for multiplayer because you can't pause the game whenever you want... really a great game
A hella good video on Barotrauma. One thing to note.. The starting sub; Dugong is actually hella good. Simple layout, good placement of guns. Only thing that's actually a downside is the lack of fabricators.
And you can modify any sub in the game, so you can have a Dugong with a fabricator if that's your preferred flavor
Not only the lore, but the gameplay style with the darkness and atmosphere makes this a one of a kind game in an underrated subcategory or videogames.
Just got this on sale for under $8. I'm having a blast, but I feel like the $30 price point makes a lot of people (myself included) not even willing to give it a chance. I never even gave it a second glance until it was on sale.
Definitely worth $8 though, probably even $15.
Dude me and a guy were on a sub that was falling apart on a 16 person server and everyone was going crazy so me and him grabbed a bunch of shit and took an escape shuttle to an abandoned station before a kill squad showed up and took everyone out. But then once we got back to the sub we mined our way into the armory, got guns and started killing the kill squad one by one until only 4 kill squad guys were left. So instead of fighting them we went to their sub and exploded ut. Then we repaired our sub and completed the mission. 10/10 game
About the part of inventory space:
When you buy something from an outpost, it gets delivered with a crate. You can use this crate while exploring wrecks to massively increase your inventory size.
(im at 8:12 now, dont know if he already said something about that)
Protip: Fill that crate with toolbelts. Now it has 6x the space it did before
How to deal with your ADHD-riddled crew mate once he puts on the clown costume:
1: Acquire nitro glycerin.
1.5: make peace with Jesus.
2: Locate sped.
3: Forcefully apply nitro glycerin at range to the drooling loaf child until either he is reduced to a fine pink mist, or the ship sinks from the blast damage.
4. If indeed you still poses a functioning ship and a functioning circulatory system, dispose of the remains.
*REMINDER! the clown can never be dead enough.*
I find Alien Artifacts are worth it if you make the artifact containment case. It takes up a normal inventory slot, freeing up your hands and also preventing the artifact from inflicting negative effects on you and your sub.

When I just starting this game I always had active radar on and for some reason even though I wasn’t at low depth I was diving outside the ship and forgot to turn of the radar and in front of me I found a gigantic creature( I later found out it was a endworm) I nearly fell out of my seat from then on I almost never use activate radar unless it’s on directional ping.

That seems a bit cheaty to me, the lack of sight really contributes to the experience. It’s like having X-ray in Minecraft.

I mainly like barotrauma because the idea of submarines on alien planets is something I've never even considered

I find that simply creating a hosted room, giving it some descriptive name makes it super easy for other people to jump into your game
2023: We're getting ready for the 1.0 patch. Got this game 2 weeks ago. The chaos and stories are equally outlandish, but the dread that seeps in when you see a pack of Threshers or Raptors never gets old.
The really cool thing is that since this review, there's been at least 3 major updates adding or overhauling new content. I spent around 7 bucks on it and my weekend just evaporated
Don't turn off line of sight! It adds so much of the claustrophobic element. As well as the need to communicate more.

worth mentioning that crawler's can also get infected by the husk parasite, and are a source of infection at times
also, crawlers are cannibalistic and will eat their dead, an easy way to get them off your tail is by killing some of them as they are approaching your sub, they will then quickly eat their dead giving you some time to get more distance.
also also, god damn that sonar screen at 18:23 when the endworm can be seen attacking the pirate sub, amazing
I prefer having LOS because opening a door to see your crew unconscious and mudraptors everywhere because you ducked outside to grab some alien blood for a second is hilarious
The key to having the most fun in barotrauma:
multi-player on casual, missions difficulty 30-60%

Also, the way you presented the game really sold it so well! The thorough analysis of its mechanics and showing us the really intriguing parts of the game and its creatures, then the submarine editor and modding makes it irresistible to *dive* right in
I think the recent changes to the game, AND the crew member AI, makes taking them along a bit more reliably. At least the capability to send them back with enough ease, and the recent change letting you access their inventories. But what are your thoughts on it?

Between the music, speaking style, and Military Channel like documentary vision - one of the best reviews for a game in a while. I had to pause at minute 16 because I was laughing so hard and tears were obscuring my view. Too funny, but strangely I feel like I need to also sink in at least 100 hours into this.
One thing I learned from Barotrama:
Morphine fixes everything. Even morphine addiction.
The patterning noticed is that in all the most popular videos you never really hear about exploring outside the ship. All the horror comes from the deep, creatures of the deep, or your own crew.

For salvaging a wreck I'd say bringing a crate with you would be quite a smart move
Just picked it up aaaaand ... Yup, great game. I just wish there was an AI preset for "empty the air tank rack and come with me! If anything attacks: you commit an incredible act of bravery by becoming fish food in my stead" - because if you are like me and do not have a lot of play time (5h a week tops), multiplayer isn't an option.

I agree with most of what you said, except for turning los onto none. I feel like having the line of sight adds a lot to this game. Never really knowing whats outside your ship unless you go on a gun or leave. Not knowing what could be in the next room if the door doesn't have a window. Some of the funniest moments when me and my friends play come from us not knowing something is in our ship until we open a door and 5 mudraptors come charging at us. Or exiting the airlock and seeing 15 crawlers standing there waiting for you
It's a good thing the alien structures have been revamped
Personally I do like having to deal with the whole line of sight thing, but man those hud tips are great
Combat abilities have evolved I believe, I often find dead threshers and mudraptors inside my sub that my bots murdered.
"I imagine this suppose to be tense..." That's why you play on hellish, because your blood *will* boil under the tension
if you like this,i would very much recommend trying hidden deep.

24:40 This is outdated, now when you have the required skill level to craft you'll get a quality bonus, the green "Good" quality gives +10% to one stat of any item, for example crowbars get +10% striking power and oxygen tanks get +10% condition (condition=capacity). There's also blue "Excellent" quality which is the same as "Good" but with a +20% buff, and a final purple "Masterwork" quality that can only be obtained by meeting the skill requirements for "Excellent" *and* having a talent that gives +1 quality to certain crafted item categories. "Masterwork" quality gives a +30% bonus.
this game is unputdownable. You will have your favourite role- but then you will realise every time you play just HOW MUCH this game lets you do. If youre wandering where all the people have gone from other games you may be playing, They might be in barotrauma- literally everyone is playing it and for a good reason. Its still early access but has more content than you could go through in a lifetime- with the help of all the awesome mods available of course. Im here only to see what other people say about this game, so if ure watching/reading this and still undecided about whether to buy or not- just get it. You will get your money's worth very quickly- and then you wont be able to stop. Currently im building my own submarine to take into the game with me and my friends, and ive intentionally sifted through the servers looking for 1 person to fill out each role. Also i have a pet dinosaur who eats traitors and dead bodies whenever those appear on my ship.... 400th hour in game XD

Somehow this would fit really well in the lore of The Expanse.
I bought 3 copies 1 for me, my brother and my friend after he got his steam deck it works for all of us and we all had a great time on a small sub. I would say its a definite buy but on sale id argue that $30 at least imo is a bit much for a game like this. If I had to do the same purchase to get me and my 2 mates on board at full price it would require $90 the price doesn't make it easy for you to get your friends on board as that's where the game really shines. On its own in singleplayer its still a really solid game and is still very much enjoyable, and imo this game is a absolute highlight of Steams greenlight program with so much creative freedom and how light the game is its great and the fact that its still being worked on years later is amazing.
But id argue $10 to $15 on its own or maybe $20 with a 4 pack option as a lot of games suffer from that dilemma where you really have to shell out LOTS of money to play with friends and Barotrauma is suffering from that very same problem takeing $120 to bring you and 3 others on board. A 4 pack would help alleviate that issue and a price cut down to 20 with a 4 pack would cut the bulk buying for 4 people in half to a more reasonable $60, some may call me a cheapskate but that's how I feel. Id complain about this more but thankfully Barotrauma goes on sale as frequently as other games on the steam store which can be utilized to buy enough copies for you and your friends for the price of 1 but any other day id pass on buying it off of price point alone.
TL:DR - The Game is extremely solid and good especially with it still being updated years later. But purchasing the game in bulk is prohibitively expensive thus makes it hard for someone to introduce it to a group of friends even the base price point id argue is quite a bit much for a single person.
9:00 about the speed issue, you are wearing an abyss suit in these clips, which slows you down a VERY LARGE amount, a combat dive suit, on the other hand, has far better speed.

Been playing for 2 years, don't regret a single day.
One of my favorite games, to the point where friends were concerned about the couple hundred hours I put in on it over the first few months of playing.
5:02 is the most relatable thing, and usually the reason why I rarely see campaign saves with AI medics.
What an amazing review it made me want to play this game despite not having friends to play this game

Medic: Ironically, the very best killing machine on the ship. Has so many poisons you could make an assasin jealous, also most likely a bioterrorist and loves his crew (Also the most stressed and depressed person on board)
Security: Either a cool dude trying to easily kill enemies, or power hungry 9yr olds
Mechanic: Already broke into the armory, god at wiring. Best friends with engineer
Engineer:The god of all, Easily dethrones captain, can destroy whole ship in a second, can fix the submarine with a wrench and life partner with mechanic

8:10 you can just stun your mechanics/engineers, taking their toolbelt or take a storage container if that is available on your sub. It helps TREMENDOUSLY for this job.

I came back to this review not realizing I had already seen it and wanted to leave another tip after I realized. Look regardless of whatever your opinions on mods are. Do yourself a favor and download the backpacks mod. Just do it. You will save yourself so much tedium
I don't get why cant i strap a flashlight in my gun.
There's a mod that lets you do that, but I prefer throwing a flare in front of me and hoping for the best

It is really like a case with Rimworld, why Wall Light is not in the base game?
When you go outsiders your submarine grab a flare, if you throw flare on your way if there monsters they are start attacking the flare, when that happens you can shoot them or throw a grenade, and if you don’t have any flare you have to kill one of them so the others eat the dead one, and if you wire your diving suit slots into a power source their oxygen will fill up automatically :3
