    More often than not, what makes any motorcycle unsafe is usually the nut that connects the seat to the handlebar.

      Who are you going to blame when you are dead in the street? As I see it, driving safety is the driver's responsibility. You want to come home safe at the end of the day so you have to anticipate errors from other drivers. Complain about it or learn to be a better driver, the result is the only thing that matters eventually.

      I believed that, overtaking the same guy on much better equipment in the corners lap after lap, then watching him blitz past on the straights...
      Until I crashed. Crowd watching had been predicting it for laps, too.
      Buy what suits what you do the most of.
      You can ride a sports bike on a gravel road, or a tourer through a canyon. But in the end, you will have the most fun if the equipment matches the usage and your abilities.
      Of course, for most of us, that's simple commuting.
      That's why sports tourers and motards are really the best compromise bikes. They both really can do anything, don't do any of it badly, and generate big smiles at a speed which doesn't see you in prison after you pull off your helmet at the end of a run.

      It is not ok. Remember that when the engine used, cylinder walls will wear away and because of that total displacement of the engine will increase slightly. What that means is every time you swing your leg over that thing sooner or later your 998 cc capacity engine will hit liter mark and BOOM!

    The feeling of opening up a 600cc: prepare, knock down a couple of gears to get the engine revving and you're away and get the job done. The feeling of opening up a litre bike: the world shrinks, you go into hyperspace and your heart rate double and all of this happens in the time it takes to twist the throttle. In any gear. It's terrifying and corrupting and additive and I love it. There's not much you can do on a 1000cc sports bike that you can't do on a 600cc just by getting into the right gear but the drama and the adrenaline is epic.

    • @bradywilliams2951

      As a previous owner of both a GSX-R750 and an FJR1300, I can completely confirm.
      The Gixxer was fast, but manageable. The FJR was a silk rocket of a Sport Cruiser.

    • @mildyproductive9726
      @mildyproductive9726 3 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      I think the 600 has more drama, with the engine screaming like it's going to explode. I haven't rode a liter bike, but the GSX-R 750 was bad enough. It makes you back off before the engine has even started to spool up. It's more like teleporting.

    • @KimSE4
      @KimSE4 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@mildyproductive9726 depends what you want. Sometimes drama is great, but for day-to-day riding the effortlessness of a 'Blade is unbeatable. You can tour on it, take track days, commute, anything except off-roading and you can do it fast and relaxed and with comfort. A CBF600RR may be more fun but all that dancing on the box and keeping the engine revving can be tiring, but I know a lot of people who use their Fireblades for everyday use, day in, day out, for everything.

    • @mildyproductive9726
      @mildyproductive9726 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@KimSE4 you don't get the drama unless you want it, though. You can commute without ever exceeding 7k rpms.

    • @mildyproductive9726
      @mildyproductive9726 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The real problem is that they're more similar today, than different. When the supersport class started, a 600 produced less than 50 hp. And before all the electronic assists, you would be crazy to commute on a super bike. Today, a 600 is near enough a superbike if you drop 3 gears. And a liter bike can be ridden by a noob. The only difference is when you hit a long straight stretch of highway where you can open the throttle on a liter bike all the way for more than a second. And Ducati pulled out of making 600s and just started making 800cc bikes.

    Started on a 125, moved up to a 250 and now I'm on a 900 Street Twin. Definitely the way to go and I would advise anyone starting out to begin small and work your way up. Learning to ride on a machine that can't get you in too much trouble was ideal for sure. It might be a little slower to get to your forever bike but it's well worth doing, it's also just fun to ride. You can really ride the hell out of a 125 but still be within the speed limit lol.

      @Theodore Marakas well think about it like this- the government enacted sweeping tax cuts for corporations and the rich, which is essentially welfare and government hand outs for the rich- and while they post record breaking profits and production increases, wages have stagnated. Why should the companies that shaft our pay be given such great advantages with OUR tax money? Shouldn't we get something too? I mean we're paying for it. 200 BILLION at least in tax breaks under Trump for corporations, while we don't even have decent healthcare. Singapore has full coverage healthcare for 1/5th the cost per capita of the US. That's insane and it's disgusting that the supposed greatest country in the world can't even keep our own citizens from dying, while affording such massive breaks and incentives for companies to shit on our planet and poison our air.

    Litre bikes certainly can be ridden safely on the road. Many riders have used the Hayabusa as a sport tourer for years without incident. As for myself, I could hardly wait to get my hands on a ZX-11 when they were introduced in 1990. My Sunday rides from Denver to different destinations in the mountains were awesome. But after a year, I decided that riding the machine, even on sterling mountain highways, was akin to showing up at an indoor shooting range with a howitzer. I still miss it.

You simultaneously feel invincible and fragile as hell because you know that nobody currently driving on that highway could catch you, but you also know all it takes is too much brake to send this sentient bag of blood and muscles and pus and bones down the road, proving it's most proficient at being a cheese grater for the human body.

But age creeps up and I've now got a Versys 650, it's a lovely bike and in the real world does everything I need, but as I still admire the engineering and style of a litre sports bike. I started on an R6 and eventually got the R1. It wasn't more speed I was after (although it is a fun perk) but more torque. With taller gearing I have to shift less and when I need to speed up to get out of a blindspot or anything - the power is there instantly, no downshifting.
      I'd take the 600cc for the track because you can really wring them out and throw them around but for cruising the streets the 1000cc hands down everytime

      In reality, peoples driving liter bikes are in my experience slower than peoples with 600 or even 650. They don't lean that much in corners, and then use the power of their motorcycles to keep up.
      So I guess they aren't really slower, but they are not as good.
      You can also ride, but not care at all about being fast. But in this case, why choose a liter bike ?

    • @PR-xh3nj
      @PR-xh3nj 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      In reality? ... That is such a stupid comment. I have known people on 1000s or 600s that ride them like newbs, or wring the crap out of them.
      If you want to generalize: If you see a fat guy on a 1000, you can be sure he goes fast in a straight line. No crazy cornering.
      This video is kind of stupid. You know who shouldn't ride liter bikes? Me neither...I can't say someone should or shouldn't.
      What I can say, is anyone who has owned one knows how stupid they are. Uncomfortable over any distance, especially in the city. You never get to use them to their potential because, public roads aren't tracks. It is legitimately impossible.

      If that happens, then there'd be no point in banning motorcycles. The cars themselves would be able to much more safely interact with motorcycles. At that point, the only fatalities on motorcycles would be caused by rider error. And animals, but that's really rider error as well.
      OTOH, I've seen designs for self-balancing motorcycles, so it really depends on what the rider enjoys. If it's just being there out in the open and enjoying the environment, motorcycles might get even better.
      But, personally, I love the sensations and process of controlling the bike. I doubt I'd be happy with a self-drive motorcycle any more than an automatic.

    My first ever motorcycle was a Ducati 900 SS/SP , the one thing I really learned with it was that I loved Torque. Since then I’ve had 13 bikes in all different configurations , 3 cylinders, 4 cylinders, thumpers , etc.. I was just in Austria for a month and while I was there I bought a 2001 Transalp 650 and it was the most fun I’ve had on a bike in so long , also the culture in motorcycling in Europe is so much more rich than North America that any bike is a fun bike and anyone on a bike is respected as a pier. It really changed my opinion on what a motorcycle should be and that yeah it’s more fun to ride that slow bike fast . Can’t wait to be reunited with the Transalp in the summer !

    Back when I started riding and worked my way up the CCs .. I was dreaming of the day I'll own a sport litre bike .. till I got my 900 naked honda hornet .. I have it for almost 5 years now, and I don't really need a more powerful bike .. this one still scares me sometimes !! .. Only about twice a year that I get to open it full throttle to top speed .. only then when I wish I had more speed .. But these two moments I feel not enough to buy a litre bike .. acceleration is better only like half a second to 100km/h .. not worth it .. top speed is worth it of course but I don't get there a lot as I mentioned .. besides I have a connection with this beast already and I don't want to give it up .. I might one day think of a litre naked bike, but not race .. It's very uncomfortable .. !!
    Every time when I'm riding and remember that one day we'll have to give up internal combustion engines to electric motors, I rev it up to hear it's beautiful sound, and fly as fast as I can like I'm running from this reality ..

    Greetings FortNine , I`m 57 and have recently gotten back into riding . Found a 1980 Yamaha XS 1100 that needed refreshing , ( the seller practically gave it to me) Rebuilt the master cylinders,calipers, recovered the seat, rebuilt the carbs, new fuel line, new tires, and treated and sealed the gas tank, oil and filter change etc. I`ve been riding her daily, and it is a flat out blast! These motorcycles were the Japanese muscle of their day, they are freaky fast for a nearly 600 pound machine, and if you stay within yourself, and do`nt do stupid shit, you will arrive alive. Having said that, It`s not the most practical bike for a 150 pound man, but these are the bikes of my youth, and the thrill is just amazing, and my muscle memory is still sharp, so why not? Great vid as usual.

    This review is true on a lot of levels. I have a R1 right now which is way more bike than I need for daily use. I’ve owned all sorts of bikes in the past from Harleys to DRZs and liter bikes are still some of the most fun to ride in my opinion from their pure performance and engineering marvels that they are. I probably won’t keep it forever and will eventually switch back to a bike suited better for daily use but every time I open the garage and see that R1 I get excited to ride it. It’s not logical to own a bike like this and probably shouldn’t be legal but dang there is something about it that is undeniably enjoyable.

    I think you generalized litre bikes with super sports like the R1 and S1000rr and forgot bikes like the Z1000 (my personal ride), FZ10 and other naked litre bikes which are really quite different when compared to a super sport. .
    I will agree that there is no reason to have one other than you want a 1000. There has never been a time where I have been able to really get on the throttle. I mean, just topping out 1st gear I'm already at 70mph and damn quick too. I would wager too quick in all honesty and my bike is one of the tamest litre bikes you can get, making 136hp and 82ftlbs of torque. The only time I really love having the power is on the highway I'm able to have a ton of control over my speed. If I get on the throttle even in 6th gear cruising, I can immediately begin accelerating at a fairly rapid rate which is great for passing and it cruises fantastically, with the only downside being the seat is a bit hard for long rides and the wind noise can give me a headache after a few hours.
    I will say that I would never own something like a S1000rr or R1, which is what I felt you were more referring too unless for a race bike only. Those really aren't meant for any normal street riding at all and exhibit all the characteristics you pointed out. Really the only thing my Z1000 and those bikes share is the power, after that their really different bikes.
    Regardless I hope I don't come off like I'm being really defensive or anything, I just think certain litre bikes like super nakeds are definitely a more practical street bike, even if their still way to powerful to ever be used to their potential (by a responsible rider anyway). Just my thoughts though, good video man.

      Is it fast and powerful? Yes, but not uncontrollably so.

      I think you are calling his take on the subject correctly, and this otherwise very good youtuber overly generalized the topic. I did the wrong thing, got an FZ10 as my first bike (I'm 34), and it was the only bike I had ridden apart from the 20 hp MSF bike.. I do believe that it is taking me longer to get acclimated to the basics of riding, but that said, I got 4000 miles on it last season, and around mile 2000 I started to really understand how to ride correctly. I still have a long way to go, but this bike is a long way from being an R1. And a big part of it is maturity. I was following a VW Golf R the other, a rather quick car, and there was a young driver in it. He turned left from the light, goosed it, and promptly stuffed the car into a snow drift. He had the AWD traction to leave the light hard, but as soon as he went to turn it behaved like any other car. It's an example of the same debate being worthwhile with cars. Don't let someone who doesn't get how a fast car works drive a fast car.

      this comment makes total sense. but i do understand what fortnine is talking about, and have to agree with him as well. an R1 or gsxr1000 really is too much to ride on the street. i mean, who needs 200hp when riding on the street? i'd take a z1000 any day over an R1, just because its more fun to ride with less HP but still have a serious amount of torque to pull you through nearly every situation you face on the street.

    I love motorcycles. I have ever since I was six. That's 39 years. I've had everything from a CBR900RR/929, GSX-R's, and a Ducati 999. I grew up riding in the dirt until I was 16, and then never looked back. Slowly progressing in skill and knowledge from a Honda CX650E to 600 Hurricaine, ZX-7 ('89/'91), and then on up to the "litre bikes". I'm currently in the market for my next litre bike for next summer (saving my pennies), and I'm torn between the R1M, RSV4, and S1000RR (also waiting to see what Honda has on offer for 2017). I will never use any of these bikes to their full potential, and I have never reached the full potential of the bikes I've owned. But that's ok. The same can be said about the Gen 5 Viper parked in my garage that does 0-60 in 3 seconds, and tops out at 330 km/hr. As you know Ryan, there is more to ownership than taking these vehicles to their limits, because that's gonna kill you. It's the appreciation, as you said, of the masterful craftsmanship and engineering that go into them. So, yes, I should own a litre bike................because that's what makes me feel alive, and what the hell else am I sitting at this desk in this office for anyway? ;)

    My first bike was a Kawasaki EX500. I then went on to buy a Ninja 1000R. There was a few months I had both sitting in the garage waiting to be ridden. While I loved the feel of the 1000R my favorite for city runs was the EX500. My next liter bike was a Suzuki 1100 Katana. It was extremely awkward in the city but once you were on the open road, it was sublime. Nothing compares to the rush you get from riding on the open road.

Especially when you consider how the manufacturers are blurring the lines in the classes with bikes like Ninja 1000, GSX S1000F and other sport touring bikes. Sorry to react to a 4y old vid, but I just got in to riding motorcycles, as I just bought my first bike, with the intention of using it for commuting about 200 km/day (takes me 3+ hours a day), so about 2h of trafic jams.
    In Belgium, lane splitting is 'mandatory' during trafic jams and motorcycles are 100% tax deductible for my small company.

I tried the 636 and it’s very uncomfortable like most 600s are. Usually 1000 are bigger and more ergonomically fit. Plus they have power modes so that’s a bonus plus other features like quick shifter etc. it’s about riding and being comfortable.

      The UK has a graduated licencing scheme - you can start out with the full blown unlimited motorcycle licence... if you're 24. You can ride a litre bike at 21 if you've held an A2 license (~400cc and 47 bhp) for two years, which you can get at 19 if you've held an A1 licence for two years (125cc, available from 17). And you can ride a 50cc from 16. I could ride a 50cc with my car license if I pass CBT, which is basic handling. And I've had a bike up to 55 mph twice on public roads... no engine except me, and Sir Isaac Newton! No licence required for that.

    First of all, i love your channel and you deserve a lot more views and subs.
    Secondly, to the point of the video: i started off in Australia on a 250cc Hyosung, not because i had to go all the Ls and Ps but because that was all i could afford 3 years ago. Then, once that was mastered i moved to a Ninja 650 which was where i learnt how to hone my skills and how to deal with little accidents and stuff. Now i am on a Ninja 1000 and a proper sportsbike has never been in my sights however the torque and the power available on a 1000 is just amazing. Yes, maybe we don't need 1000cc bikes but consider that riding a motorcycle is more dangerous than driving already. We are a bit like smokers, we know the risks but we are happy to accept the consequences of such choice, am i right? People that don't ride don't understand why we spend sometime commuting or roaming on something fast and dangerous, most of the time uncomfortable and too hot or cold. It's just the way it is and i guess having a 1000cc, or a MX or any bike that is not just the minimum requirement is part of the fun of this passion we all share. I do agree with you, though. Starting on a 1000cc is silly as much as it is starting on any bike that is too powerful or too particular so that it won't give you an understanding of how to ride any motorcycle but just that motorcycle. Canada is beautiful, BTW.
