    I think Nocturne is really fun. One of the best expansions and it make the game more than just draw and discard cards!

    I play every weekends with expert players, we have all of the expansions and Nocturne is one of my favorites. The cards here are particularly technical and well balanced. In the first expansions of Dominion (Prosperity for example...) The only strategy possible is to play an high trasher like "chapel" and spam strong cheated cards like "Gran Market". Give to a beginner a "workshop who can gain card up to 8" and the beginner will say : "it's the best expansion" 😒 . The latest Dominion expansions like Empires and Nocturne are for me the best because you have many strategic CHOICES. Thanks and respect to Donald X Vacarino and his team for the great job they have done in all Dominion expansions.

    I hope they eventually put out more potion cards. The only reason I didn't care too much too much for Alchemy is because it didn't have enough potion cards.

    Minor correction, this is actually the 4th set that Duration cards have been in. The other 3 being Seaside, Adventures, and Empires.

    From my experience playing digitally, the night phase in particular opens up some really interesting strategic space. However I can totally see how it might be fiddly in person. Pretty sure I remember reading the designer say that he knew this set was more aimed at experienced players, but I think that's fine having just done two new 'simple' sets of cards for the 2nd Edition Original and Intrigue.

    I don't know what kind of group you normally play with, but you always have the option of just not playing with Night/Boon/Hex with new players and anyone who has a few games of Dominion under their belt can be taught the new rules in a few seconds. I mean I don't think I'd bring out Alchemy/Dark Ages/Adventures/Empires cards in a first game either.

      John Smith honestly, the base game’s first game setup is perfect for the first and second game of dominion

    • @davidpeterson5179

      One of the main reasons I like Dominion, is when you play with experience players the game goes pretty quickly. True when a new set comes out it slows down the game a bit till people get use the to new cards. But this just adds several different support piles and the new phase, it just to fiddily, I agree with Tom that this my least favorite expansion, and I played several games of Nocturne, I'll be keeping it but would hesitate to play another Nocturne only game, I would rather have a couple of cards maybe mixed in with a ranodm kingdom. I use an app that randomized the kingdom cards. But Nocturne just slows the game down way to much for what you get out of it.

    Thanks for the nice review.
    Me and a friend of me own all Dominion games/expansions together so I think I will buy this too (when it’s available in German).
    I think the longer game is no problem for us, because we usually think 15 minutes about a 20-30 Card setup (without standard cards) before we really play.
    But let’s if the night phase makes fun or if it is a nightmare.

    Not a fan of this review. You said, that a game takes longer, but the same is true if you use Adventures or especially Empires (my favorite expansion btw.) if you want to play well. Setup in Dominion with a lot of expansions can take its time. Do you need shelters, colony's, platin? Ruins? What Events? Landmarks? What tokens? Any mats or coins? Its not like: "Here are 10 random cards. Let's go". The only sets that can do this are Basic, Intrigue and Hinterlands. All the other expansions have cards with some more setup rules or additional material. To complain about this in the last expansion is not fair. And even tough setup takes longer it takes less time than setting up something like Orléans.

    Technically curse cards are always part of the setup. For example if yuo are playing with Garden and no cards that give players curses, you are still allowed to simply buy a curse in case you have an extra buy and that last curse can bump several gardens up a point.

    I agree with some of your complaints, especially the fool card slowing down the game, but this is the first Dominion I've played and I love it. The original will be my next purchase and perhaps my opinion of Nocturne will change afterward but this was easily good enough for me to become a Dominion fan/player. Thanks for the review.

    My wife and I play dominion all the time and have every expansion. My opinion is that Nocturne is fine: I don't think it's on the same level as Dark Ages or Empires, but new cards to interact with and new mechanics are what keep Dominion interesting.
    I have never understood the criticism that Nocturne takes longer. I have played this expansion many times, and I have no clue what other people are doing that makes the game take longer. The night phase is an extremely simple mechanic. All the extra cards (boons/hexes, spirits, wishes, etc.) add a lot of chaos to the table but they don't actually add time to the game. The kinds of things that make Dominion take a long time are heavy attack games, games without trashing, or just really complex combo games where you might get stuck in analysis paralysis land. But play a game where all the players understand the power level of Shepherd and watch how fast THAT game is over.

    I'm shocked by all the people who say they don't like Nocturne because it's too complex. Apparently you can't win, because too many of my friends say they don't like Dominion because it's too boring and predictable. Make up your minds! :D While I agree that Nocturne isn't my favourite expansion, complexity is good and has given us some of my favourite expansions: Dark Ages, Adventures, and Empires.

    I thought the Nocturne cards were okay at first when I played them online, but the greatest thing about Dominion is that turns take like 5 minutes and there's essentially ZERO downtime, keeping you involved the whole time. The complexity of this expansion is definitely too much, and if I didn't want restrictions on how many cards I can play I'll play Ascension or basically any other deckbuilder. Dominion is my go-to because while it's simple it requires you to be careful with your decisions. Anyways that's enough out of me.

  • @Syncopator
    @Syncopator 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    We've found that even some of the other sets have added some fiddly bits that we don't use anymore-- less is more is the rule for us. And the problem with new special feature ideas like this is, there's not as much replay ability because there's not all that many cards of the new types. So you either only use them rarely, or they get overused and boring...

    What are all the Dominion sets that have "duration cards"? Seaside, this Nocturne, & what ... ?
    So do the "Boon cards" stay on the table for 2 rounds & then go away like in Seaside then, or do they stay in play out on the table? Also when does the night phase even happen & how does it work? I didn't glean that info from this review.

    • @pimbooij2864
      @pimbooij2864 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The boon cards have an immediate effect and are discarded afterwards, the night phase happens right after your buy phase. during the night fase you may play as many night cards as you can.

    Many moons ago, when I was just getting into the Dominion universe, this review would have destroyed my opinion of dominion as a whole. If this individual with a camera and an ego wants to avoid nocturne, thats fine. That's his choice. I feel that he dismayed some people from Nocturne that, had they not watched this, may have enjoyed it. The setup for the entire game, save for base and hinterlands, is definitely more complex. It is simply not true that you can just whip out 10 cards and go. There is always deliberate setup. The game needed some darker cards and themes for that aesthetic. Dark Ages went a little in that direction but not quite enoiugh. Dominion and all their expansions is a big enough game to cater to everyone, but not quite enough for those looking for a darker, dungeony, monster vibe. With this expansion, it CAN cater to everyone. So it didnt cater to Tom Vasel. Big deal. There is plenty of other cards to "whip out". However, do not dismay other peoples game style due to your personal tastes. Nocturne is an excellent addition, please watch other reviews and videos, and try it out yourself. Read the rules and the cards and the lore and all that. Do your own research. Listening to one person is a bad idea. Especially since he talked about his own taste in how to play the game the whole time.

    I feel like the previous more complex sets like Dark Ages, Adventures or Empires did not cross the line, where the new mechanics are wanky. They introduced cool new stuff, but with this expansion, this is just too much as Tom says. Sure you can have fun with it just like with any other Dominion expansion, but this is the first time when i felt like this has gone too far from the original dominion experience.

    • @rainerahlfors
      @rainerahlfors 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This does to Dominion what Dark Ages and Prosperity did previously. Prosperity added Platinum and Colonies. Dark Ages added ruins, shelters, etc. This simply adds alternate starting "Coppers" and have a few effect decks along the lines of what Adventures did. Other than that, it plays pretty much the same.
      If you want to avoid a fiddly Dominion experience, simply stay away from Dark Ages and anything released after that.

    Not really a fan of Dominion, I will play it, but never buy it or bring it to the table. This expansion shows that they need to make another deck building game that fixes all the problems with Dominion. Add a theme that works well with the mechanics so you can explain the game with the theme and also improve the artwork. Make a Dominion 2.0.

    I wholeheartedly disagree. Nocturne is my favorite Dominion expansion because of all of the new stuff to change up the game a little since my family is very experienced with the game. I would say that this expansion is about as complicated as Empires, Adventures, or Dark Ages yet I didn't see you complaining about complexity when you reviewed those expansions, hypocrite. Overall, it's definitely not for new players but should add some welcome change to the formula for experienced players.
