Is Dominion Still Worth Playing Today?

- I consider Dominion one of my favorite board games of all time and have probably played it more than any other game. It's fantastic and even without other expansions it's incredibly replay-able, easy to teach, and has a lot of strategy.

I had fun listening to the intro story about the favorite game question and your response of "Dominion". I could have told the same story. I also say Dominion because it is the game that introduced me to the board gaming hobby so I feel I owe it my allegiance. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this venerable game.
There’s not a lot of “pure” deck builders out there. Dominion is one of the few, and is still the best out there in that category

A friend of mine, his brother is apparently a Dominion savant. He can look at the set of cards for that game and immediately know exactly what needs to be done, and in what order, in order to completely destroy everybody else. His friend too. They can open the box, and randomly pick 10 cards, and figure out who's going to win based off who goes first, without even playing.

I played a long tume ago as I was getting into games. I felt like with 4 players and all the cimbos it just took a long time to get to your turn again. Anything else maybe vetween this and clank?
I also still love Dominion! Been trying Ascension lately & enjoy that too for a change of pace, but still pick Dominion first.

Yes it is, I really like it a lot. The expansions make it fun
The skill floor is really low, and although you could question the morality of having to buy a higher skill ceiling, the skill ceiling of the base game is high enough to have a lot of fun and develop your first crackhead strategies before moving on to the real crazy shit (i'm still waiting for the day with two throne rooms and two posessions in my hand lol)
Or Throne Room and three Treasure Maps 😂
I friggin love Dominion! Would love to play it more. Have you ever tried to play it solo? I haven’t found any decent rules for doing so but would love to.

@@jtpromolab If you think that's something, I found a copy of the First Edition of this game for $4AU at a local Charity shop recently, and then today, found the Second Edition at another local Charity Shop for $10AU. Talk about lucky!
Just reduce all victory card piles to 5 of each, and see how many turns it takes you to empty the Provinces. When there is one Province left, you must buy Duchies if you cannot buy a Province.
Then play as many times as the set is interesting, seeing how few turns you can take to end the game.
Additionally, what I do sometimes, is just play both players of a normal 2p-game, trying the top two strategies you would try with that kingdom. Have your second choice strat play first player. This better represents standard playing conditions and lets you try two strategies at once.

Hi! Enjoyed the video. New to the game and have a question; just before the 9 min mark you play two villages and say that you have 4 actions. The first village takes one action and gives two; two actions remaining. The second village takes one action and gives two; three actions remaining. Am I incorrect?
You are correct; he would have 3 actions remaining.
You are correct. The rules actually say that some people like to make tree of their action cards to keep track of how many actions they have left.
I love Dominion because I love deckbuilding. Period. Other games don't do it better, they just do it differently. I enjoy the very process of deckbuilding and that's all Dominion is so that's why I like it the best. I will say I am disappointed the upcoming Allies expansion does not have any new Looter cards.

It's 2023 and Dominion is STILL worth playing. Donny's doing a wonderful job each set making Dominion more and more worth playing every time, with no signs of slowing down.

I like dominion, but i feel once u know the "formula" for winning with whatever deck it gets pretty acdemic. I wish there was a little more RNG to make things interesting.
Dominion has hundreds of cards. There is no formula
The RNG is the randomly-chosen Kingdom Cards.
Even in the base set, with 25 Kingdom Cards, different Kingdoms can be better for certain strategies than others. And that's not even counting the 500-ish options from all of the expansions...
While I'm sure that there is a theoretically perfect formula for every possible combination of cards, there's no way anyone could memorize all of them. All that remains is more general strategies, and different people will employ them in different ways.
Plus there's also RNG in the new cards that you draw each hand.
What do you mean? There are sooooooo many cards in Dominion that you can mix and match.
The way I see it, the fact that there's so little randomness is exactly what makes it such a good strategy game, without there being so little that it's always predictable.
Some expansions add very drastical optional rules, like punishing you for a large deck. Some cards require a certain playstyle and form synergies you couldn't think of with other cards.
There's not simply an easy formula for dominion, if you think it's too easy, either get more expansions or friends that are as good as you in dominion for a challenge
I remember one turn where I had 100 treasure with 3 buys and was crying. (I used Empires and Adventures)
Ascension is another great deck building game
