    When Tom showed the different victory point cards I thought, I think mine look different than that. Then he showed the curse card and I know mine are different than that one. Was there something that changed the original victory point and curse cards?

    • @TheParadox3000

      He compared the old ones ("old": with the new art) with the new ones (exclusively from the second edition, though the base cards set (with base cards only) will be printed like that in the future)

    • @Xarou
      @Xarou 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    bandit will be good in a big money strategy and at beating big money, but I don't think it will be a "must-buy" like mountebank, witch, and some of those other high-powered 5 attacks. I think it's powerful but balanced

      Definitely an improvement over thief, man that card. It makes sure you always get a benefit while you're not helping your opponements too much. The Attack itself may still not be that strong but the card is worth buying, which thief was almost never.

    Going to pick up the update pack...but no way am I getting rid of Spy. I find it to be a very useful card.

    • @TzarinaMystra
      @TzarinaMystra 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed! I frequently win games by stocking up on tons of Spies. They're my favorite base game card by far.

    • @TheParadox3000
      @TheParadox3000 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Useful maybe sometimes, but from a game designer's point of view (as from many players, actually), resolving this card can take a long time, especially when you play a bunch of spies each turn, makes the game longer for an attack that might have found the bad card it wants the opponent to have on top of his/her deck in it's first play during the turn. Sure it's useful for your own deck in combination with drawers, but the attack can become annoying (even for the one who attacks). There are other variants of Spy (like Oracle which is even better for your own deck manipulation and draws those cards for you) and so I think it was the right decision to get rid of that card. The goal was to make the base set more fun and Spy can often become the opposite of fun for anyone sometimes.

    Already ordered the upgrade packs. Dominion is still my game groups favorite, so it's a must buy. Also sorry to see the Woodcutter go, but now that I see the Bandit I'm not so sorry to see the Thief go-- it's a plus that the Bandit is a little more expensive and mitigates the Theif's issue with scaling (no matter how many opponents you have, the Bandit only gets you one gold-- with the Thief, you could theoretically collect a gold from everyone)...

    Dominion is a good intro to deckbuilding, but the lack of any theme meant I soon moved on since I am not ultra competitive. That doesnt seem to have changed so I think Ill stick with core worlds/ xenoshyft / legendary where I can have fun aside from the straight machine building

    • @Xarou
      @Xarou 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Check out Thunderstone if you want a deck building game with some great theme.

    • @Xarou
      @Xarou 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      And that's fine. You can prefer Dominion over any other deck building game. I was first introduced to Dominion. My wife and I played it a lot. The next one I played was Ascension. That was cool because it had the two different currencies. I saw there was more to DB games than just what Dominion had to offer. Then I found Thunderstone and, being into stuff like D&D, I was enthralled by the theme.
      My complaint with the original Dominion was it lacked theme. Later expansions did introduce themes, like Prosperity had the theme of getting rich. I forget which ones but there is one where the theme behind it is planning for your next turns. So, in my opinion, while Dominion is getting better with theme there are others out there that never had that problem.

      My exact first thought. At least change the ugly art work.

    • @TheParadox3000
      @TheParadox3000 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Christian Johansson well consequently they would have to change the card backs, which would be problematic. They probably didn't want to confuse people, a completely new font and design would indicate that the game isn't compatible with past expansions etc. So the morale of the story? Make sure your game looks neat (and in this case, has a title that is actually readable at first glance) from the get-go. Because it just might sell well enough to spawn a zillion expansions

      Nah the rule book is definitely different and the base cards are also slightly different from the German ones (I think the German base cards are even better with the symbol in the upper right-hand corner), and well, 6 cards deleted and 7 added instead of just black Market added

    • @TheParadox3000
      @TheParadox3000 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      rcarreram The second edition. It's just more fun, has more variety, and they got rid of old cards which experienced players don't buy because they know the painful experience of losing in an unfun way with those cards that are now not part of the set anymore. I would still recommend the Base Game for the first buy, then everything else (Prosperity is highly recommended) but make sure you skip Alchemy or buy it last, it's the most problematic expansion plus it's small.

  • @johnr8095
    @johnr8095 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was going to trash my original set and then buy the updated version. But really, why do that? I don't want to lose the cards that are in the original set. So, I guess I'll go for the ipgrwde pack. Do I care about the new rule Book? Not really.

      Chapel is the best card in the game for thinning your deck out early. If they are available, I will almost always buy one (sometimes two) of them before the first deck shuffle. The only downside is when there are also cards like Thief or Gardens in play.

      ReadyAimFire Some expansions do a better job with themes and artwork, but I also wish that they had put some effort into thematic cards and better artwork from the beginning. "Some people object to the use of plural pronouns in this type of situation on the grounds that it’s ungrammatical. In fact, the use of plural pronouns to refer back to a singular subject isn’t new: it represents a revival of a practice dating from the 16th century. It’s increasingly common in current English and is now widely accepted both in speech and in writing."
      en.oxforddictionaries.com/usage/he-or-she-versus-they
      I don't think it's as clear-cut as all that. There is no governing, proscriptive body that decides what is "proper" and "improper" English, unlike, say, French. Whether or not meaning is conveyed determines whether or not something is "correct." I'd say it's fairly clear you fully understand what is being communicated whether a card says "his," "his or her," or "their." Furthermore, "his or her" is among the clunkiest expressions in the English language, and while it is one possible solution for fixing the very broken system of using "his," "him," "he," and/or "himself" to mean a person of a nonspecific gender, "their" just works so much better. I respect your right to find it disagreeable; I have my own moments of grammatical/usage pedantry. However, I do not think one can simply declare that something like this is "incorrect" without qualification or justification, especially when there is a fairly heavy share of sexist historical baggage accompanying it.
