What are some exercises I can do at home with my dog to help him build his confidence in himself as well as in me as the leader? We had a trainer come by for an evaluation and she mentioned he does not view me as the pack leader, he views me as weak and this, along with his fear of other dogs after being bit, can add to his dog aggression.

Focus on the basics, get down to the sit, stay, heel stuff just like I started in this video. The idea of a nervous dog being in charge to make the rules is how the anxiety and stress builds. Don't over think it, if you feel your dog is nervous with you, go out and do basics. Make everything a yes or no game for bit, heel, sit, stay and break making things on your terms while on the leash!

I like to have my dogs jump up on rocks, logs, benches, and other outdoor things and have them sit and stay. Then I work up to distance stay in higher distractions. I toss them a ball when I release them. It becomes this game while we walk where I might ask them to sit, stay and then have then have the ball. They begin to watch me closely for cues of the game. If I see the dog feels nervous I will look for object to do inside and outside turns or jump up on something. Works every time, I use objects to sit on as redirecting

Get rid of your dog or have a professional train him. You're not the leader if you think you're part of the pack. We're human and he is dog. Think about that.

Can I suggest the same routine he's doing here but as the dog is pulling near or in opposite direction from dog or whatever give pressure turn your body and let the dog's attention and body come back to you. Say "yes" then treat.

I’ve been using my body to try to keep him walking straight, to my left, loose leash. Long story short I need to teach myself how to walk before I try to teach the doggo. I gave him a nudge, stepped up, Missed the curb, and splat, fell on my hands and knees. Good news: He stayed right with me, “helping” me get up.🤣🤣🤣

Thank you for this! I have a Shiba I adopted at 5 months and quickly realized he was not as socialized as he should be. We couldn’t walk down the street because he was so scared of the parked cars. Practiced this inside the house and in the backyard and front yard. Same day we made it down the street and around the block for the first time! He’s finally getting a good walk.

OUTSTANDING training video. We watched this for less than 10 minutes then took our 5 YEAR OLD Golden Retriever (Leo) for walks.
It took only 2 days, and Leo is listening and responding CONSISTENTLY. He also demonstrates a MUCH calmer demeanor.
We now have the same affectionate/loving Leo, who sees us in charge and loves it.
He’s not anxious, there is no lease pressure when walking, and we look forward to walks and outings at least 3-4 times per day.
This is life changing for our family and friends. TRY THIS - YOUR DOG AND YOU WILL HAVE A BETTER LIFE!

Finally a dog training video I completely agree with. I used this exact technique to teach my fear aggressive mastiff to loose leash walk. It works. She can roam, stop and sniff, walk either side of me, in front or behind but she knows not to pressure on the leash. This has made our 7 yrs of walking daily together an enjoyable and bonding experience.
I prefer to think of our relationship as a partnership rather than a human dominating a dog.

When my dog is stressed or anxious about anything, running her through commands helps distract her from whatever is making her anxious. She can get that anxious energy out and think about something else. Also, emitting cool, calm, and confident vibes helps to give them cues about how they should feel in a situation. Within a few minutes she relaxes, however she is not nearly a stressed as this dog is.

Amazing video !!! My dog has so much anxiety ever since he was a pup when I rescued when he was a stray, due to that I made the huge mistake of feeling bad for him & not putting boundaries & rules for him therefore causing him to have more anxiety & I never realized this until now that I see his overly anxious insecure behavior this is why it’s so important for them to see you as a leader & trust you because they are more relaxed when they don’t feel the need to lead themselves ! I want to build a relationship where he trust me more & sees me as his pack leader because I love him & i want him to be relaxed & happy & being able to socialize with other dogs & humans, Ty for the raw video , my babies a sweetheart & he has never bitten me or anyone & I want to steer him in the right direction !!😁

Ok, so far I have implemented this to a 30 min training session with my cockapoo and it works so far! We have had people go past and her focus was on me for once and the walk. Haven't had a dog go past yet, so will try that next session. She was attacked last year by a dog, so nervous of them by barking in their face and pushing them away (never bites) but I need it to stop, even if it is just on lead. So far, I can vouch for this technique! No other technique worked, but this! Ahhh! Finally getting somewhere, such a relief! Thank you!!!

@@annecaulder9495 I half agree with you...anyone can have an anxious dog. But it's true that dogs pick up in our anxiety.
I had an abused dog that was anxious in a lot of situations. Once I had a really good relationship with him I gave him very definite boundaries and he was "looking to me" for guidance, it was easier (thesis of this video).
I would also add, however, that once I recognized his stressors, I would take proactive measures to put him at ease.
If there was a big dog walking up for example, I would call him over, far away from the path of the other dog and give him lots of effusive, positive attention, give him orders (sit, lie down, roll over, dance...whatever your dog does). That keep them very focused, plus since he liked this attention, his anxiety over this stressors wanst reinforced by my stress for him...
It's a little hard at 1st, but you being really positive in these moments goes a long way for the dog.
Distraction and positive focus, like a toddler!

I dont have a dog yet but:
Start smaller, less distractions, a closed off lawn. Meet one dog at a distance, take it slow. Close slow, in many sessions if needed.
If the dog is overwhelmed and wont listen, you have to back up to a managable level and build from there.

It's because you weren't clear enough with the leash. She turns off the pressure when she jumps into your arms.
Simply put, you're using too much pressure. You don't realize it, but you likely are having your arm about halfway correction at all times.
You need to be extremely binary with the leash pressure

Admittedly, I'm one to let my dog make his own decisions based on this training. I suffer from anxiety and depression, and I'm pretty darn sure my dog can feel that! Because of my own insecurities, I feel I'm being "mean" when I train or try to make him do something he clearly is a bit more stubborn to comply to. But in reality, I've been cultivating his own anxiety by not being that "rock". I hear many times be "firm, but fair." Thank you so much for sharing this video! We have a 6 year old anxious beagle who spent most of her years living indoors and now we’re training her to walk outside. It’s hard because we live in NYC. She’s easily frightened by any sound (buses, loud cars, shuffling trash, sirens, trains, etc) and immediately goes into fight or flight mode when she hears them. Would this technique also work with a harness? She reverse sneezes uncontrollably every time we use a regular collar (since she pulls on it so much).

You make this look so easy!! I just got a GSD 2 days ago. I am now his 4th owner and he is only 3 years old... I've done a little research and know it's hard on dogs that are constantly tossed around :( He is very nervous. Doesn't show aggressive behaviors, just a big baby about EVERYTHING. He also paces the room, jumps all over furniture/counters and tables, doesn't make eye contact or fully engage with anyone, will sit/lay down for only a few minutes or until someone (me especially) moves around. He is constantly by my side. I know it must be out of confusion or anxiety... the poor boy :( It has only been 2 days so I don't want to start "bringing the hammer down" per say I want him get comfortable and know this is his home now. He is such a sweet and smart boy, but I can tell separation anxiety is going to be a real thing if I can't even go to the kitchen without tripping over him. He is also intact, but we plan on getting him fixed soon. I'm not sure if any behavior stems from that as well? Any advice?? I love this channel and what you do for these babies!!

    • @tomdavisofficial
      @tomdavisofficial  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Well, the hard thing is, understanding that not all dogs are okay with other dogs. I would start off with a walk together to introduce the new dog. We can make things worse by almost forcing the dog to interact against their will. So you don't want to ever correct a dog that is straight terrified, that's not a good idea. In time get your dog around dogs who pay no attention to your dog, Dog parks would be the worst idea to helo with social anxiety.

    • @angieshamngie7
      @angieshamngie7 5 ปีที่แล้ว

we tried the dog park and it was a baaad idea and never took her back. I'll try taking her for a walk with other dogs first. It's always hard to introduce her to meet other dogs because shes a miniature schnauzer and tenses up when a big dog gets overly excited to meet her and bolt towards her. It completely freaks her out. Thank you so much for the reply!

If my dog is fearful, I don't want him to be scared of shocks on top of it. To be honest, the collar training helped. I hope to get hom to be more confident without it though. Will start with basic training again... sit, stay, heel, break etc. I have two dogs, a Japanese spitz crossed with a jack russel, 16 months old brothers. fantastic!I I own a 12 year old jack russell terrier, and he has been always a great dog (friendly, sociable, playful, active, etc) , but since last year he seems to become more and more fearful of everything. He first started avoiding larger dogs, than bicycles, became terrified of bicycles bells, hates to go out for a walk (I have to carry him outside, and he drags me inside), and now he even hides when he listens someone opening the fridge's door.
So I haven't interacting much with him lately when he is at home (giving him all the peace I believe he wants), unless when he shows up and wants some attention or company (or food). I'll definitely try doing this exercise to improve interaction and command. Lets see how it goes.
    Thanks for the tip!

I come to these videos, because I have an anxiety dog. I've had my rescue for about 10 months now and she has gotten much, much worse. When either my boyfriend or I leave, she goes crazy in her kennel. We walk her, play with her, has a schedule that I work for her. Once I leave, it is a whole different ball game. I still live with my parents. So does my brother. They can not stand my dog nor will do ANYTHING with her. My dog, Zoey, has shown aggression from fear due to them being mean to her. Dog training is something I take a big interest in. I learn so much from your videos of any case. I know my Zoey has separation anxiety. I know that I need to make her kennel a safe and happy place for her. That once I leave I am not gone forever. I will be back! She likes to chew, scratch, and whine/bark in her kennel while my family is home. It can become so bad that they have to leave the house. I have also asked my family to help show they are not fearful people. To this point, I am not quite sure what to do anymore. I have thought about getting her to a vet ASAP. I just moved to my area and while this pandemic going on, it is frustrating with the new policies set in place. Perhaps you have any advice?
