I shot a Big WT Doe with the Remington HTP JSP in this test out of a Marlin 1894 with a 20” barrel at about 50 yards. Hit in the front of the left shoulder and exiting behind the right shoulder. 3/4” exit hole and good blood trail to follow. Ran about 80 yards. The Remington 240 grain SJHP expanded well at 1,200 fps with a retained weight of 184 grains when shot into water jugs at point blank range.
I get 1750 FPS in my 22 inch barrel. For the Remington soft points. I’ve harvested a few deer with them HTPs and they drop them quick. I like them better than Winchester soft points. The Remington uses softer lead and it expands better at all velocities.
I got rid of both my 44 mag about 8 years ago. I still have to watch. Thanks for the great content. I gave my 44 ruger rifle and Virginian arms dragoon to my son. I think I'll by a new ruger revolver in 44 mag. Big thumbs up 👍
One thing about the 44 magnum it will penetrate deep. And with the 330 grain +P Hammer Head Garrett Cartridges of Texas 44 magnum load as well as the Buffalo Bore 340 grain flat point +P+ 44 magnum load you have the deepest penetration you can get.
I don't usually talk about over penetration, but for self defense, especially in public places, these both seem like overkill. That HTP would be excellent for handgun hunters or wild animal defense.
thanks for the test, Tools. I used to carry a Ruger Vaquero 5.5 in .44 mag.in the woods during black bear season. I always kept it loaded with the Remington HTP. Happy to say I never needed to fire it in need. But what a great round. Nowadays I carry a Springfield XDm-Elite 10mm with hardcast in the gun and a mag of Underwood copper solid. Lots lighter and easier to carry than that big old gunbelt.
My thoughts exactly. Amazing to me that a lot of people think wadcutters are just target loads. They have been used very effectively against real threats and do a lot of damage.
Absolutely the best Y T. channel, very comprehensive, I'd love to see these out of my Redhawk with the 7.5" barrell, Thank You Brian, you're the best period! 👍🇺🇸
I got a half box of 9mm ammo from a company that seemingly went out of business. Probably gonna send it your way so everyone can enjoy a video on it. A few folks might still have some and benefit from the test results. Stay safe in the snow.👍✌️
Yea that SP is kicking but the wadcutter is/would be my choice. Less recoiling and cuts one hell of a hole in tissue🎉 underwood can’t push lead much faster without major barrel leading even if projectiles are epoxy coated🎉 44 mag has some high pressures as you know🎉🎉 Love that Taurus🎉🎉🎉 awesome color🎉🎉🎉
That blast chamber might add to the velocity a bit over a 3" barrel as it confines the blast a little giving the projectile a slightly harder push than 3 inches.
In UW defense, wadcutters, as I think we all know, are typically intended to be target ammo and soft points are typically intended to be hunting ammo. The results fall nicely in line with those intended uses.
Underwood may have underloaded wad cutters for target loads, wad cutters are used for scoring paper targets and defense but on these they may have loaded it for paper scoring
@@jona5517 I mentioned that if you looked at my comment wad cutters are for defense as well but they often water them down for paper punching and bullseye wich only needs enough power to punch a hole for scoring
I think one of the main points is that underwood also knows what a wadcutter is used for, but they sold this ammo in a box of 20 or 25 or whatever for a hot price. I'm here to say, the hottest .44 mag I think you can find other than Buffalo bore is the plain old winchester white box 240 grain soft point "bear and wild boar" and it doesn't come at underwood price I think it's like 55 dollars for a box of fifty instead of 40 dollars for a box of 20
I just got a bunch of those 44 special 200 grain underwood wadcutters for 14 bucks a box. Out of my bulldog they get about 1050 which is plenty and they recoil like an sob.
I used to carry a Taurus .44 mag comp with a 6 1/2" barrel with a comp and putting it in a real simple cordura nylon holster on my left side crossdraw the barrel goes into the pocket of pair of cargo pants or shorts and wearing any coat it is pretty concealable. And with 2 speed loaders in the coat pockets you have 18 rounds of .44 mag to deal with any problem.
That Remington HTP would be a perfect bear defense round in a 6" or longer barel revolver. I had those in 357mag through my Ruger GP100 6" stainless it passed through 32" ballistic gel.
Most commercial 240 grain soft points seem to behave and penetrate like a hardcast or FMJ when fired from 2-4 inch barrel guns, they are meant to perform from long barreled revolvers and rifles
The HTP looks like a good hunting round. I think the difference with the Underwood wadcutter is that the wadcutter is really intended as an anti-personnel defense load.
Dang!! I’d like to see that HTP in a long barrel! I think I’d actually feel bad for the jelly 😂. The Underwood just got spanked plain and simple. Awesome test my friend 👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
Tools - thank you for the wadcutter test. Pretty disappointed w/ Underwood. Kinda reminds me of some of the pandemic era stuff we were seeing from various sources, where we were suspecting powder skimping... I've noticed that Underwood hasn't been loading magnum wadcutter for a while. You have to step down to the Special rounds to get them. They are loading a 44 special 200g wadcutter with and advertised muzzle velocity of 1000 fps.... 🤨
Yup . There are people who want big bore full wadcutter , with a full diameter meplat on purpose . But yeah , the 44 Mag flavor WC is pretty much redundant with their hot .44 Spl offering with same bullet , that can be fired from .44 Mag revolver . That said , not seeing anything to get excited over the JSP . .44 Mag full power non expanding penetrates very deep . They all do . A 240 hard cast SWC is preferable to either of these .
I always view WC ammo as only truly suitable for making nice neat clean holes in paper targets, what they were intended for, even UW makes low power target loads
The 1180 fps rating on the box of the Remington load is a pretty slow load for the 44 Magnum. I know it went much faster than that but even so the rating is very light. It is relatively easy to get well over 1400 fps from a 240grain bullet from a 6'' barrel. Yes, that velocity will be reduced in a 4'' barrel but often the ratings on 44 magnum come from a 6-8'' barrel. The Underwood load is a "Specialty load" I'm not sure exactly what they hoped to achieve with this load but it's kinda of an odd ball load
Wadcutter loads are for punching clean holes in paper targets. Pretty much exclusively for target/competition use. Not surprising that they are lower velocity.
I think one of the first ammo types I bought for my Winchester 94 .44 mag was that Remington HTP. I don't know if I ever shot any out of my revolver but I'm going to have to try to remember to pick some up to keep in stock. I figured it would penetrate quite aways being SJSP .44 magnum but it did even better than I expected. Any chance we'll see some "hot" .45 Colt tests? I do love me some .45 Colt 😍.
Soft points can be amazing as with the American Eagle 100 gr soft point 327 which acts like a gold dot in water jugs through 2 layers of 12 oz duck canvas.
Y'all Underwood specifically advertises the hard cast wadcutters as "hunting and self defense" ammo targeted to short barrel revolvers where expansion is challenging. It is not sold for punching "paper targets".
I would have guessed the exact opposite on the penetration, I guess that velocity was significant enough to overcome any expansion that may have happened with the HTP.👍
Clearly the penetration is impressive on the HTP's, but we've seen 9mm create larger disruption/cavatation than that.. Especially HST's. So not sure what the hype is.. I guess it's meant for large game? Cause I definitely wouldn't be using that for self defense where over penetration is a concern
OMG, OMABAJEEBUS and HOLEE MACKRUL! That HTP is the shiznit!!! Maybe I should swap out the Underwood Barnes 1700 FPS 357's in my 586 L-Comp to the 125 grain HTPs! I've got craploads of it in 38 +P and 357 just gathering dust for years. Awesome video, as always!!!
I would like to have seen real expansion from that HTP. I believe it expanded smashing the block. I run 357 HTPs in my revolver. Those perform well. Keep doing these 44 mag tests and I'm gonna have to get one. 😂 Appreciate you brother.
The UW gave ya about Remington GW box in .357 does, just with a bigger bullet and being .44 magnum those are definitely going to be at least twice the $.

Underwood test barrel length for all their 44 RM loads is 7.5”. I’ve shot this particular load from my 5” 629 Classic and average around 1190. Do 13:15 I think another 2.5” in bbl length would get 1300? Probably so, or close enuf. I liken this load to more of a hot 44 SPC. For social work it’s hard to beat with reduced recoil and low flash. Wish I had bought more of it before it was discontinued. Hopefully it’s only a temporarily out of stock.

I would like to see you test the 240 htp sjhp load. From what I’ve seen it’s near identical to the 357 mag 158 sjhp just scaled up in every way with similar fragspansion and penetration.

I'm guessing that Underwood is intending their 44 Magnum wadcutter load to be a reduced power, target shooting load. The Remington load is definitely a full power, 44 Magnum load, suitable for deer or boar hunting and defense against a bear.
It's been pretty solid. Only thing I changed were the grips. The stock ones are terrible at soaking up any recoil. These Hogues make it a whole different experience.
Interesting... Those Underwood .44 Mag wadcutters are kinda like hot .44 Specials. I have some of these (same weight; 200 grains) as .44 Special - rated at 1000 fps, I believe.
