I usually feel like Wendy made peace with the fact that someday she'll grow up - something that Peter has stubbornly rejected. She truly is on the verge of her own childhood "ending", but she has the heart and will to hold on to childlike wonder. Something that Peter probably never even considered.
(And then there's her dad, who on top of chaos in the nursery that day, was probably having a Father Panic over the realization that his only daughter truly is about to grow up and had a moment of self-sabotage in trying to force her to.)

A big thing in the book is that children are innocent AND heartless
So that's why the whole "it's just a game" thing is even there.
Because even if Wendy gets k*lled that is just a thing that happens in the game they play.
The OG book is dark if one thinks about it, which is why I like some darker retellings of it.

Peter would "cull" the Lost Boys when they began to grow up too much. When you take into account the psychopathy of murder at a whim and that supposedly the only four population groups on the entire island are the Indians, mermaids, Lost Boys and pirates, and that new little boys are brought back to Neverland by Peter, it becomes pretty clear that not all the boys who began to grow up were slaughtered by Peter.
I think those who managed to escape, survived..and grew up to become pirates.
This would mean that Hook had once been a Lost Boy. He'd seen Pan as a leader and a best friend, someone he'd known for pretty much his whole life...and his best friend told him he needed to die, because he was growing up, cut off his freaking hand, and laughed like a maniac after tossing it to a hungry beast. Then he was taken in, wounded and bleeding, by the very people he'd been taught were his mortal enemies; it's no freaking wonder Hook has issues. Who wouldn't??
When you read the book, Peter Pan is really the antagonist, Tinkerbell...egh; I don't even know where to begin with her. James Hook was just a very damaged victim.

I always thought that this sequel was interesting, theme-wise, it fascinated the younger me. Like, how Jane is growing up during the war and she doesn't have time or heart for childish bullshit, and then she ends up in Neverland where she's like a workaholic on an obligatory vacation. And she has to let go and let herself have fun. Interesting story they did here, and they didn't have to. Even as a kid I picked up on the fact that after Wendy got attacked by the Lost Boys, she doesn't fly as well as she used to. She's later seen having to flap her arms or have Peter hold her hand for her to keep up. Feel like the biggest point missed is how Wendy slowly comes to accept that she's growing up. While the trip to Neverland was an adventure for John and Micheal, Wendy was getting that one last childhood moment before entering her teens. She wanted to never grow up, however the entire time she was unintentionally leaning more towards an adult mindset. In the beginning she wanted to give Peter a kiss, not on the cheek either, something that definitely set Tinkerbell in a panic at the word. She starts getting frustrated with Peter, flirting with other girls (Tiger Lily), treating everything like a game when it shouldn't (the drowning). Her reaction to seeing John and Micheal before she's instructed to pick up more firewood. Encouraging the Lost Boys to leave to be with their own mothers, not just her being their 'mother'. Wendy eventually comes to realize that she is ready to grow and that's okay as it's a part of life. Wendy by the end comes to more of an acceptance between her inner child and adult life.
A lot of this was subtle without needing full out words or narration, something I admire the earlier works of Disney animations.

I use to go to therapy as a child and they would make me watch this movie. I didn't understand why but after some years to learn about myself it was because I was in the situation when it came to growing up faster due to personal issues that forced me to behave a certain way. The reasoning for me having to watch this as a child was because I can't learn by reading and talking about it was hard to understand but if you put a character that you can care for with and understand their morals was the only was I could understand anything really. To me now facing adulthood and thinking about this movie did bring back those memories which I can say it is a great movie for people and children like me who can't understand things how others see it which allowed me to be honest with myself and which lead me to get help.

I saw this in theater with my mom. You also have to remember the context of original release. You see, my mother is in the US Army, and this sequel was released to theaters around the immediate months after 9/11, and my mother was going away to a training program for possible deployment. (She would ultimately get deployed to Iraq for one year from 2003-2004.)
Anyway, when I saw this with her in theaters in 2002, she actually took me out of school early to make a day of it, since I loved Peter Pan stories. And I do think this is one of the more powerful films from my childhood, due to one thing: the subplot.
You see, since the prologue of this film is set during World War II, particularly the Battle of Britain, when the Nazis were bombing London, I remember the scene where Jane's father/Wendy's husband is saying goodbye to them while in his RAF uniform, which was a common sight for me growing up seeing my mother in her US Army uniform going to a drill weekend, her various training exercises, and also when she was deploying to Iraq. Plus, the scenes of British troops and Nazi bombers reminded me of the footage of the planes being flown into the Twin Towers on 9/11 all those years ago.
But then everything turned happy when the film transitioned to Neverland. I was reminded of how important it was to keep my sense of childhood wonder alive in difficult times, which is the overall message of the film. Which is why I always considered this to be one of the better Disney sequels. I mean, the fact it got a theatrical release instead of being dumped direct to video just shows that.

It's very complicated to play pretend, embrace your own roots, see representation of ANY kind for Native Americans. I can only think off the top of my head, the biker character from Wreck it Ralph the Sequel and John Redcorn still standing. Joseph from king of the hill is a realistic representation of most modern day Native Americans, but Princess Tiger Lily was important as what she was, a young girl from a tribe basically being offered to her tribe's enemy... maybe a thought piece on what happened to my own great grandmother and many friends mothers and grandmothers in my rural area, being a good wife to a white man makes you white. Your children, if half native American, are white. It wasn't really a girl's choice, it could very well have been her fathers. Your family name has no trace, you have no roots, you have no hero.

The idea that "kids don't care," and the assumption that "kids are stupid" is not an excuse to put out crap. Because, yes, kids ARE impressionable. Which is why it's especially important to give them/show them good quality stuff. Otherwise, bad quality stuff will affect their perception of what is good quality in a negative way. This is not to say I'm claiming that Return to Neverland is objectively bad, and I'm not saying that a movie can't be based on feel rather than thought (like Pinocchio, or Snow White). I'm more speaking towards how sorely we need good quality entertainment again, and not quite so much cash cow material that we're getting nowadays. I want entertainment companies to CARE again. That being said, I really love the analysis here, and what these two movies represent. As their messages of childhood really vibe with me. And I think the message from the first and the message in the second is a very organic transition in themes. As when we grow up, there is something of a, I don't want to say "temptation," but certainly a "pull" to set aside our childhood to only focus on adulthood, and all the terrible and pessimistic things that come with it. But if you only focus on adulthood, you could very well lose sight of the good hidden underneath, and only focus on the bad right in front of you, like it did with Jane.

its really interesting to think of these direct to video sequels as a posibility for the smaller division of disney toons to recognize the bad or difficult or dated parts of the original movie, and try to do something about it. in that case, i feel its somehow slightly more valuable than the current disney trend of remaking the movies almost shot by shot with only a few cosmetic, badly made changes to attempt to be more "woke". i guess the sequel/prequel universe of the direct to video disney movies could be considered a series of "official fanfiction" done with a meager budget, but even then theres always a bit more creativity there than in the remakes :^/
i really liked your comparison of neverland to a playground! particularly because as a kid it was extremely easy for me to compare it to it, in the sense of it being a place of nerve wracking social dynamics where the kids in charge were the ones who came up with games and the rest had to lead. in that sense, the idea that, if everyone is not on the same page, it turns into an outright bullying ground is extremely accurate. im not particularly into the story of peter pan, but i cant deny that the sequel, with its more complicated concept of childhood, growing up too soon and the importance of fairytales and stories, does truly have quite some effort in the script department, which i really value

I'm happy that someone is finally giving positive attention to certain of the direct to video sequels. I like that some of them, like this one or The Lion King 2, or Cinderella 3 actually have fairly interesting stories and themes - even if a little clunky due to a short production time and lack of budget. I think it's just because we *zOoMeRs* grew up with them and have more affinity and willingness to see beauty in them - similar to how the younger generation who grew up with the Star Wars Prequels are kinder than people who were adults when they were released.

I was obsessed with Peter Pan movies as a kid, I rewatched them countless times but always liked the second one more exactly because of how female characters were handeled. I hated how Wendy was treated in the first movie, I felt so bad for her, and hated how Tinker Bell and mermaids were so jealous of her and treater her like crap, this rivalry and lack of female friendships annoyed me so much even as a little kid, I just wanted to see girls having fun and getting along too. So when I saw the sequel it was like everything I wanted in the first, it had a more interesting story line, had Tink and Jane befriend each other, even that part where mermaids were caressing her instead of trying to kill her like Wendy, was very short but it was so important to me and made me super happy. And also having Jane rescue everyone in the end, I just loved all of it. While the first movie is very dear to me and I love it a lot, the sequel was and will always be superior.

Unrelated, but the first Peter Pan was one of my favorite films growing up. Though something that was more remarkable about it was the special behind-the-scenes documentary that played after the movie. It was one of the first things that made me realize that movies were something that magically came out of nowhere, but was something that was made by people. That's something that has definitely resonated with me today.
That said, yeah, it's interesting how 'Return to Neverland' and the Disney fairy movies are much better stories than the original 1953 film.

With the whole Native American caricature thing, I feel it’s a little more complex.
I say a little because it’s still clearly not a good thing and while I do give it a pass as a product of it’s time, if people want to alter them I wouldn’t really care. But at the same time, they aren’t portrayed as entirely bad, heck the only reason they capture the lost boys is because they think Peter did the same to Tiger Lily. And once they find out the truth they make peace with Peter and let the boys join in with their (extremely inaccurate) celebration. Hell speaking of Tiger Lily, even when under threat of drowning by a pirate she still stuck too her guns and wouldn’t talk. Which also kind of shows that not all the woman are portrayed negatively.
Again though, I would still raise every eyebrow I had if they adapted this straight. Personally I would pick a native culture, ask if they are ok with being represented in that film and then learn about their culture, specifically mention them as that tribe instead of just “Indians”, but keep the same plot points.
Anyway, interesting perspective from you I’ll have to look out for your vids in the future.

    • @rebeccascholtes1438
      @rebeccascholtes1438 4 ปีที่แล้ว +26

You're absolutely entitled to your opinion, but I don't agree that she is superior. Jane is a different type of character all-together, in a different era. Victorian education of little girls is to be kind, soft-spoken and polite. Little girls were dolled on, had dance lessons and tea parties. As a girl, your worth was to marry and have children someday. That's it.
Jane however, grew up in war. If anything hardens reality, it's being scared of dying. Men and women are less divided in dresswear and there's not much time for education, only for survival. To be able to fight is now a skill everyone must learn.
Jane is not a pushover because she was raised with different values. Being polite and soft-spoken will get you killed.
That doesn't mean Wendy is weak. And I don't think any female character with her traits would be in modern era's as well. It's simply a different kind of character that has a different narrative purpose in a story.

To me Neverland itself is a child who hasn't been taught yet. Everything goes, as long you don't actually die then get over it. I do think the reason why Wendy is attacked so much is because the role she was placed in; a mother. Yes, a mother is someone who does give comfort but the main role is make sure you have the knowledge to grow up. Why wouldn't the native magical beings try to get rid of her like how a white blood cell does to a virus.
Edit: Also it's interesting how they drew Peter. It's clear in the books that Peter is just the id with no super ego in sight. Heck he battles a Captain, an authority figure. Peter only cares for fun in the moment. I feel like Disney made that show in his design. I have heard kids asking their parents if "Peter was Evil" a valid question. He looks very impish

As a teacher in elementary school, children will absolutely use the "it's just a game" to get out of anything. That's why they are in school and why they have parents and teachers to guide them into what is appropriate behavior and inappropriate behavior. Also, it is my belief that children are good but self-serving; if they have to choose between themselves and someone else, they will always choose themselves. That's why it is very important for parents and teachers to teach about concepts like "empathy", "sympathy", "helpfulness", "selflessness" and the like as well as boundaries and what it means to say "no" and in which situations they should reinforce said boundaries in order to protect themselves.

I saw this one first, and for the majority of my childhood didn’t even realize it wasn’t the original one until I was shown it. I hate Peter Pan. I LOVE Return to Neverland.

Its actually one of the better Disney sequels IMO.

I really appreciate the sequel! I was a little kid when it came out and have memories of seeing it in theatres. They had a Captain Hook costumed character before the movie who engaged with the kids.
I’m Native myself and my parents never let me watch the original movie. Disney wasn’t really allowed in the house (too many themes of child abandonment), but my mom admitted she also didn’t want me to be exposed to the racist caricatures of our peoples.
Pocahontas was also not allowed in our house, that’s a whole other can of worms that I won’t get into lol.
Not having those characters in the sequel is something I’m personally glad they didn’t include. :)

I don't know why I put off watching your stuff for as long as I did. You're so thoughtful and chill, and you take the time to bring up good things about films from our childhood that most people prefer to tear apart. I really should have checked this channel out sooner, TH-cam kept recommending you and I had the audacity to not trust their judgment v_v

I still think about how those pilots must be in an Asylum for probably reporting coming across a "Flying Pirate Galleon".

I grew up with a bunch of disney sequels and only got to see the original when I was a lot older and not really a kid anmore ( peter pan, lion king, little mermaid, aladin, beauty and the beast) and tbh I never disliked any of the sequels, and I even like the peter pan one more than the original ( but they were both good, and anyway what disney did back int he 2d era is way better than whatever the fuck they are doing now)

They will probably in 50 years or the future either have the protagonist be a robot and the message being non-human entities can do great stuff. Or the protagonist will be someone who is non-binary and will tell Peter pan about how gender is a spectrum.

I too love how Jane wasn't afraid to call him and refused to to shut up just because "it wasn't their intention" (an excuse commonly used to put the blame on the victim for being "dramatic"). I also see Wendy to be a bit inconsiderate w Jane. After all, she had spent most of her life in war and as an older sister, she was expected to be mature about her decisions. It didn't help that Jane felt as though she was more aware of what was happening around her than her own mother, thanks to Wendy always having this positive attitude (something understandable for a mother, but in the eyes of scared child that's trying to be strong, it is just terrifying).

quick ran here, I know return to the sea seems like a cardboard copy of the first movie, but's more than that. I use to watch it all the time because of Melody. Both Melody and Jane were forced to live a life where they need to be someone else (Jane being an older sister and facing an harsh reality at a young age, and Melody to stand poise and be a proper princess and hiding something that deeply makes her happy). Both stories also tells how much support a kid needs in their time of need, If Wendy didn't even tell Jane the stories in the first place she wouldn't have that character development as well as peter and the others, Melody on the other hand needed the support to her liking and abilities and telling her that it's okay to live with those said things. That one scene in LM2:RTTS where Melody can't talk properly and being awkward to other kids her age and soon being humiliated because she was talking to Sebastian, I can relate to that, and what hurts that she couldn't even (hesitant on telling them) tell what she loves to her own parents because she knows that they would shut it down and would just makes her more disclosed. A weird thing to say but return to the sea just depicts a choice that a child shouldn't have and maybe even anxiety in the mix of it.
