Ravil - Very cool and brave of you to participate in the discussion :) Enjoyed the whole two hours, very interesting discussion. Would be nice if you could share also with the community how the performance tests/comparisons were done

Ravil. Thank you very much to participate in such debate. Walker have good points but you also have. And personally, I liked very much the respectful and pacific way you managed the discussion.
Please share more content and knowledge in your TH-cam channel.
Walker - Thank you to provide the debate.

    Blind spots
in the vision of "one protocol to rule them all" MQTT:
    (open to debate)
    1) MQTT is the most efficient protocol
    for data, not for information.
    It is designed for a low-profile 1-to-many
    communication (raw data, telemetry).
Optimal only from a "big data" point of view.
    2) at levels 0,1 of the automation stack,
a reliable communication in many cases must
prevail over any other efficiency, cost
    or scalability consideration
(especially when safety issues are involved).
    Machine to machine communication
often requires low latency and a complex
    interdependence for control algorithms.
    3) report by exception to the cloud may render
in many industrial cases a large amount
    of useless data
    (instead try to embed intelligence,
machine learning functionality into your field
    devices, creating higher abstraction layers
    on the edge... and hence
reporting less but more "meaningful" data)

Thanks for coming on Ravil. I ended up liking him a bit more towards the end

The debate became more and more interesting as it went on. The two parts about openness and report by exception are most exciting.

Great discussion, my view is that OPC UA is a framework (Information models, Alarms, Events, Data type representations, Methods, Services), whereas MQTT is just a protocol for 1 to many comms using a pub/sub mechanism, and hence the comparison might not be apples to apples. I'm reading about Sparkplug, so that might be covering a lot of ground where MQTT falls short.

OPC-UA and SparkplugB is more of an apples to apples comparison -- correct

Hi @@walkerreynolds973. Great discussion. Attempting to learn all things mqtt so may be an incorrect question but here goes. How do you see organisations that need the quality range of OPC for data values being served through sparkplug that only have good, bad and stale? Do you see it's a compromise they have to accept?

I use both technologies. Information model is the thing that I like most from OPC-UA. It can be perfectly integrated with the PLC logic. Decentralisation and lightness are the things that I like most on MQTT.

We use both technologies, too. Each has its place.

I would say you need Alarms and Events. Specifically if you don´t know the PLC program and threshholds

Congratulations on your life ..I'm from Brazil and I've been developing electronic equipment for many years, and I'm from the time of assembly with MCU 8051 etc. Today currently working with agricultural equipment. These two technologies MQTT and LoRa have lowered costs and developed efficient and dedicated devices. The MQTT protocol is incredibly lightweight and very functional. I don't know the OPC-UA, I'll try to find out

    Hi Walker,
    We develop automated warehouses.
We use a PLC that communicates to a system that can determine the directions of the pakages by a barcode.
Is MQTT a good solution for these kind of communications or is OPC UA a better solution for this?

it's great to have debate but the guys who want to discuss stuff with Walker need to come better prepared otherwise they rumble chaotically - maybe written agenda what they are going to say in the debate will be good so when they start rumbling they could be put back on track. Surely Ravil is defending his own income stream and opc foundation contacts..
