  • The grand exchange has been one of my favourite additions to osrs, but there are many ways to get scammed while using it or in the area. Today I want to highlight some of the more common scams that revolve around the grand exchange.
    Generally if you are using a bit of skepticism, you will almost always be fine. That said some of these scams are very tricky, or just something you may not have thought of before. Let me know of any other scams you often see at the grand exchange, and maybe il make a follow up video!
    Thanks for watching

      This. If an offer is to instantly go through, jagex should buy it for the same price it would've gone for(i.e. highest buyer) The item sink should never take precedence over current ge offers, even if it means that they will be spending more out of their virtual coffer. I often times put an item for sale at a price lower than I would realistically be okay with selling it, but I can do that because I'm confident that there's NO WAY no offer exists for that item.

  • @m.f.3347
    @m.f.3347 2 ปีที่แล้ว +40

    There really should be a confirmation screen if you're selling an item for less than something like 50% of the GE value. It'd just go "This sell offer is much lower than the GE price - are you sure you wish to proceed?".
    Even if this issue didn't exist, I still think that would be a good addition to the game.

    There is another common scam at the GE. Usually extremely low level players (alts) advertising "spending 2147M" or "buying X item way over price." They are trading platinum tokens instead of GP, hoping you don't notice they only offered 2.147M instead of 2.147B. Another scam I've seen that involves the GE limit is saying they're at the limit and need someone to buy them a huge volume of X. Usually something believable like dart tips. Then after you buy the items, the scammer offers you a lowball that works out about the same as you'd get from the GE after tax. So now your options are to sell to the scammer for the lowball or sell back to GE and lose money on the tax. The scammer hopes you decide to just sell to them but either way you lose.

    once went on a merchin clan like... 10 years ago, thought ti was a scam, but turns out they did held together. they actually not just marched, but bought lots of certain items in bulk for lower price, so they can sell it over a long period. so if you needed quick cash it was great, they would tell you to buy something and then you were Merching, risky
    or you would be asked to make certain items, and then get those sold, normally these would sell for a very, very long time, or until a certain moment. their main item were herbs, and other items for double exp weekend. so when that day came, they would sell that stuff at a higher price and make billions.
    most items to collect were I think
    herbs
    fish
    wood
    bowstrings
    they took a big risk because what if an update came that would crash it, but from what I heard and remember, that never happened. but they stopped after marching became.... a big bad thing.

    • @greenbean4422
      @greenbean4422 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. Ideally that's not what we want
      You want the least amount of gp being introduced to the game in exchange for deleting said item, and the lower that gp is the better
      Jagex should *always* be paying the lowest bid because that way less gp is introduced into the game in exchange for the item.

    • @danielrhouck
      @danielrhouck 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@greenbean4422 If I understand correctly; all the gold for these purchases comes out of the GE tax; the GE is still a net gold sink and would be with my suggestion. I’m already letting Jagex cross the spread for free, saying they got highest bid instead of lowest offer even though they also have access to market data that the players don’t. Anything less is unfair to anyone who does not know the actual sale price of these items, which is ~everyone using the official client who doesn’t do tons of extra research, because the guide price is never reliable.

    • @greenbean4422
      @greenbean4422 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@danielrhouck can you think with your brain for two seconds before opening your mouth?
      You realize that with your system people would be placing their items on the market for 2147M and the "gold sink system" would instantly buy it, because it's the highest bid. This would literally introduce billions of gp into the game and hyperinflate the markets as well as effectively destroying the gold sink that the grand exchange was created to make.
      You dont understand a single thing about the grand exchange If you think your suggestion was good.

    • @danielrhouck
      @danielrhouck 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@greenbean4422 I’m sorry; I used some jargon from IRL markets which isn’t common in-game. I *think* that all I need to say is “bid” means only the price someone is willing to buy at, and “highest bid” implicitly means “highest standing bid, not anything that insta-buys”; the term “offer” is for selling, symmetrically. I wrote a lot more going into more detail just in case; you probably know the GE mechanics but it seemed like a good idea to have a full explanation.
      In general, across systems (including how IRL markets work, how the GE works, etc.), there’s a book of standing, unfulfilled orders. The term “highest bid” is the highest standing buy price, and “lowest offer” is the lowest standing sale price; the terms are one-sided, and only about orders that don’t get fulfilled instantly. This means the highest bid is always lower than the lowest offer.
      If you put a sell order in for max cash, that’s the highest offer, not the highest bid. Nobody cares about the highest offer, for exactly that reason. Similarly for if you put a buy order for 1 gp.
      Without the new system, if you put a sell order for 1 gp, you are matched with the highest bid price, and the offer trades instantly for the highest bid (unless there is literally nobody buying at any price); this is why you can get more than you sell for. Here, 1 gp never becomes the “lowest offer” because it was matched instantly and never entered into the order book. If you put a buy order for max cash, you are matched with the lowest offer likewise if there are any sellers at all, and it is never the highest bid if that happens.
      TL;DR: I’m still giving Jagex a better deal than any player gets, both because they see the full orderbook or at least the BBO (best bid/offer), and for queue-jumping reasons I didn’t get into here.

    • @greenbean4422
      @greenbean4422 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@danielrhouck You still haven't explained why it's best for Jagex to be paying the highest bid (not highest sell offer)
      It makes 0 sense to me - there's 0 extra benefit toward paying the highest bid than there is paying for the lowest sell offer, and in terms of coding I don't see how your idea is even possible.
      You would literally have to linkup a database full of bid offers- of which could easily be manipulated by players who understand the system.
      The very reason why your idea will never be implemented is because it can be taken advantage of. The reason why "highest" anything isn't going to enter the code is because the highest bid can change at any moment, and that change could happen ON PURPOSE. Merching clans exist whether you want them to or not, and if they understand that the highest bid is what will manipulate the gold sink then they will simply trade these items amongst one another until they trigger the gold sink in their favor.
      It does not take a large imagination to reverse engineer any kind of imaginative coding you can think of to implement what you think is "best for the market" because you really have to consider not just what's best for the market in theory, but what's best for the market with the notion that BAD ACTORS EXIST.
      lowest sell offer is the only way I see this being unexploitable and still good for the market. A gold sink *will always* benefit the market. If one player got careless and put his inquisitor's mace in for 300gp? Fuck that idiot - it benefits me to see his mace get vaporized and so I will be happy to see it go!
      BUH BYE! Be a responsible actor in the market and you won't be taken advantage of.

    At best I'd like to see a warning when selling something for less than half the currently traded price above 100k. If a player wants to sell their mace for 1 gp and the game decides to delete that, it is working as intended. If you did not intend the price to be that low, a simple warning of the mismatched price or grace period delay in the sale of 1m+ items would be all that's needed.
