Keep in mind these are just the scams involving the trade window from the early Runescape 2 days.
    ~Dishonorable mentions~
    Herb seed scams
    Unidentified herb scams
noted iron equipment swapped for rune
big bones sold as dragon bones via a quick switch.

I must have been about 13 at the time, but I remember spending weeks standing in the W2 garden, flipping barrows items and trying to save up for that beautiful Guthan's set with the swirly purple effects I so desperately needed to have. At this time, the whole set was around 10m, with the spear alone being the bulk of it (like 8-9m.) Fell for the leaf-bladed spear switch last second and cried for hours, to my moms confusion.

I remember when I was really new to the game and a guy wearing full rune (g) was saying armor trimming for sale. I wasn't a member and didn't know about clue scrolls at the time so I handed over my full mithril set. He trades me again and says it's now trimmed and I could clearly see it was the same armor with nothing done to it. He was asking me for like 25k for doing nothing which I didn't even have so I told him I wanted to see how it looked on me before I gave him any money. He said ok and traded it back and I x logged. I don't think he knew how the scam worked. To this day, anytime I feel dumb, I think of this guy and feel slightly less dumb.

Way back in the day, I was able to pull off trading the Black Desert Robes from The Shadow of The Storm quest off as Ahrim’s. I’m not sure why the case was, but at the time in RS2, the robes were an identical color to Ahrim’s robes, minus the chain texture from it being Barrow’s. You made them by rubbing the dark mushrooms on them from the obscure little tomb in the farthest corner of the desert at the time, they weren’t just the regular black wizard robes. However the sprite for it looked exactly the same at the time, or atleast 99% close enough to pass quickly enough if you were able to do a quickswitch in the trade window before trade notifications existed.
I have never seen this mentioned in any OSRS/RS2/Classic videos regarding scamming, history, trade bugs, etc. Thought it was funny and would be worth sharing, even though I know people will always shit on me for it

I fell for this scam, luckily for me however I didn't actually know how to do that right, so I just typed ALT+F4 into the chat and when nothing happened, I grabbed my armor off the ground and ran away, swearing at the scammer. After that, I learned to be careful and was never scammed again.

I'd love to see a follow-up on some of these as well. I remember before you had grimy ranarr, grimy Guam, etc.. all herbs were "unidentified herb" with the same sprite. You used to see people identify 1 in the stack to know what the rest were so you could sell off unidentified Guam's as ranarrs for a lot more.
There was another that took advantage of people wanting to dupe items using the poh. You would have say 2 whips in your inv and drop one in your own house. Trade and show the victim you have only that in your inv then use it on a table or something. Wait a couple seconds, pick it up as well as the one you dropped initially and trade again showing both items. Now you just get them to try, and since there's an animation when someone puts an item on the table, once the scammer sees that, they kick out other players and lock the house. Then you just wait for it to show up

The 1711k was the best, most consistent scam in the game pre-ge. You would find someone selling materials (sharks for example), trade them, and put in 1711k. Wait about 5 seconds while they calculate how many sharks are worth 1711k, then decline and tell them the number they probably already calculated. Then put up 1171k in the next trade.
Easiest 600k of all time. Worked nearly every try.

So get this; back in ~2005, my cousin came up with this “brilliant” scam. The item we used was called “hallowed Reed” and it was a tradeable item you got from legends quest I believe. So, one of us would stand in the bank say “selling reed 100k” over and over. No one clearly had the item unless they did the quest and kept. We’d then leave, and then the other person would come in and say “buying hallow reed, 500k please I need it for this quest.” No joke, we had people add my friend and buy his hallow reed for 100k to then come and try and sell it to me for 500k. It didn’t work often, but we got a few fools. I’m sorry to those 3 people that 11 year old me got ya. Man, the world before grand exchange lol

I remember falling for the team item scam with a slight variation to the one described in the video. One guy was buying a whip for 2.4 Mill, and another guy was bying a guthix stole for 2mill. Whips were worth 1.4-1.6mill back then. I traded the guy who wanted to "buy" the whip for 2.4 mill, and he offered a gutix stole. I thought, oh, "If i accept I can sell the stole for 2mill right away to the other guy" and then buy a whip again for 600k profit and I accepted. I then went to the guy who wanted to "buy" the guthix stole for 2 mill, Who showed me the 2 mill, then declined and logged off. It took me a while trying to sell the "rare item guthix stole" before I figured out that I had been scammed, but only after I traded it for a Torag's hammer, which was worth even less back then.

Some players would trade with me and when I put up my stuff first it'd say "player has accepted the trade" or something like that, even as a kid I knew to end it there.
One legit one was free gem cutting. The players would always give me back the cut gems since they were just training crafting. It probably helped "free armor trimming" seem more legit.

I remember one of the more obscure scams from back in the day: the scammer giving a high level player in fancy gear half of an inventory of Limestone, and then ask the mark to smelt it on behalf of the scammer because their own smithing level is "too low".
It would prompt to ask how many limestone they want to smelt, they'd typically select 'all', and then promptly blow themselves up repeatedly because that's what limestone in a furnace does.
Most people aren't aware of that and get caught totally off guard or afk because smelting is generally a safe activity, and it doesn't seem like a scam since it doesn't involve giving anything away

    The end.
Never understood how people got scammed, just always under every circumstance say "no" problem solved. Trade scams were more tricky, and i admit i likely got lucky never falling for the seed bs or quick switches lol.
    But the obligatory
    "Follow me to wildy"
    ended in a "no"
"well fk. . . ok bye"

So logged back to my "main" lvl 20 ish and found the guy which scammed me, and shouted on the public chat "give me the password". Then recieved permanent manual ban for "stealing accounts" by jagex mod. Good memories lol.

It was the trade scam, he quickly removed the item he was trading to me and I got left with nothing. I was sooo upset.

I scammed by the "oh, a piece of candy" scam. Basically, some dude named Pikachu (18 years ago) said he was making a RuneScape PK video but sucked and needed paid actors. He assured me that I neednt worry about losing my gear as I should only bring 1 item, my Abby Whip. We went into the wildly and they put me to one shot when out of the blue 3 pairs of noted torags hammers appeared. My monkey brain activated and I picked them up after which I was immediately pk'd and my whip dropped. I was VERY upset. My main money making job was fishing lobsters. That was A LOT of lobsters worth in money.

I was a victim for team scamming when I was a kid when the Abby whip was released, I wanted it so badly, but they were like 8-10m at the time. These 2 guys scammed me for like 1.1m or something like that and the item was olive oil and my dumb ass fell for it. The one guy said buying Olive Oil for 10m and the other guy said was across Varroc square by the lady who sells robes, and he said selling Olive Oil for 1.1m and my dumb ass fell for it. I wanted a whip so badly and I didn't even have 70 attack and ended up getting scammed lol. That was the only time that I can think of where I got scammed.

I've encountered a more clever scam back when they added GE value to the trade window. The initial deal was favorable to me showing I'll make 300k. They then closed the trade window, saying it was lag and asked to re-trade (so that the big flashing red exclamation mark wouldn't show up). Finally, they'll put up a similar-looking noted item but this time it's worth much less. However, the GE value still shows 300k difference, just to the other guy. Thankfully I did not fall for it but it made me chuckle. I think it was a wizard's hat (t) replaced with a non-trimmed wizard's hat. The trim color was black so it was hard to see the difference in a bank note.

Let's not forget these scams which were 80% Lethal, almost 8/10 people fell for those.
    1. You offer 1911k for seller and tell them to give you right amount of product, you then cancel trade tell them the amount and now you trade 1191k (720k less)
    2. Selling 100k iron arrows 4.5gp each all 4.5m. (Actual price would be 450k, but because the 0.5 mislead people thinking the 4.5m was correct.
Lot of people fell for those hourly incomes was even as high as 30m/h.

I got scammed as a young youth early in Runescape for a Green H'Ween mask. they were probably ~15m or less at the time, but it was some sort of duel arena trick where for some reason he was able to equip weapons and armor. I think it might have been an exploit, or maybe I was just really stupid. Regardless, it devastated me. Maybe I deserved it though, because I used to go to a popular bank with a friend and i'd say "Buying charcoal 250k" and my friend would be on the other end saying "selling charcoal 50k".
I also used to go to the wildy, usually outside of varrock, and I would run around poisoning people with a DDS P++. My friend would be selling antipoisons at a gross overprice and people would usually buy them.
Edit: Oh, that sort of buy-sell trick was mentioned. Fair enough.
