As an artist, I will absolutely do things for free for people. I've done art for people many times and haven't asked for a dime. If someone offers money for something I might take it, but otherwise I don't expect money from friends. I enjoy doing things for people, and as someone with little money, I can't stand how greedy so many people are. Would I love to make money off of something I love doing? Absolutely, but if doing stuff for free, especially for people I like, can help get me exposure, or even if someone just really appreciates what I do, I'm willing to do stuff for free.
well.... tell that to scamming companies.. I literally put in 3months of work, promised pay, and they just laid me off... I never gave them my work, but It was such a waste of my time
And what I said about not doing stuff for free is not me being greedy. An artist creating art for money is not being greedy. It's called making a living to support one's self. A hobbyist who does art for just a hobby, maybe will do stuff for money. But a working artist will not. (Sorry to go on a rant but I despise people who say "oh it's just art" and "you're just doing it for enjoyment why are you asking for money?" and "an artist asking to be paid for the stuff they make is greedy" just really grinds my gears and I will call people out on their bull.)

You know what i see? A disco ball, lying in opened box, dusted, broken in few places, lying in the attic. And there's a window, we can see moon through it and it reflects some sunshines onto disco ball so we get a few last flashes but it's time is already gone. (everything is heavily dusted on scene)

It was kinda cautious while watching this video, since they aren’t artists themselves. But I’m happy that Mat explained how time for sure equals money :) not everyone can bring their ideas to life so they pay artists to help them out.
As an artist myself, I really frowned on the $17 treadmill. Honestly looked like it was copy and pasted. Even if it wasn't he should've put SOME effort into making look like it wasn't.
I liked how he said that but going on fiverr kind of negated it because fiverr is one of the biggest reasons why people have skewed ideas of how much artists should be paid. For example....on a corporate level, you are looking at 4 figures to 6 figures for a logo design but you have entrepreneurs bitching and moaning about being charged $500 for a logo design because they think it should be $25. Many people who run their businesses properly will usually pay you properly but most of them will end up saying , "Well, I will just go on Fiverr then....psh."
It makes me really happy to see someone so huge in the internet to repeatedly explain why art should not be free and why you should appreciate artists time and effort. Today more than ever I am in love with Dope or Nope

Agreed. I mean it's impressive to design and prototype something like that from scratch and all, but I literally had something almost like that when I was kid. It was a towel that folded into a backpack. The backpack wasn't even attached to the towel, the towel itself would literally fold into the backpack using a string on one end or something like that.
I like the backpack more, he did say he wants to go to the mountains, hike and stuff, you can't really do that with the first design, that's more of a beach design (It just doesn't look comfortable enough to wear for hours or days in a harsh environment). I guess that's why teachers always say that we have to read every question carefully. But what do I know, I can only speak for myself.
Yeah, what's even the point with the backpack designs? You can just put a hammock in any backpack, no need to bind it to it. The first one was pretty smart though. Probably not very useful, but it was original.

I've been a freelance graphic designer and 3D artist for over a decade now and I STILL have to deal with those "Why should I pay a proper rate for art?" dolts from time to time. Oh you should hear how the worst of them go off about my hourly rate, which is actually a small touch lower than most with my experience. Like I tell them, it's called artWORK for a reason. It doesn't make itself after all, you gotta put in the work. Just so, so dang nice to hear someone with an audience like Dope or Nope's say it, since people like to ignore when we artists say it.

It does overlap a lot with mechanical engineering, but it also focuses on experience, interaction and ergonomics of the product itself. (In our language, it's literally "industrial product design". I knew it was something with "engineering" at the end in English lol)

Industrial engineering as a different field with slight overlaps, and product engineering is usually a job title for mechanical engineers working on consumer products.

they got this as evidence to sue back for the rights tho. A bot had the idea, yes, but they PAID for the design, and someone got paid to make a prototype and design. Therefore, it is their idea and anyone who steals the idea can be sued down for it
Thank you for bringing up the people who ask for free stuff! As a freelance artist who spends countless hours painting portraits, clients don't see what happens behind the scenes, and how much labor is really put into an artist's work.
I'm always like, "If you want it for free do it yourself." I don't know why people get so petty when they can't get artworks for free, like get some help.
@Elijah Ken Then no art for you unless the artist feels like it. No one is entitled to have someone else's work, especially something that took them hours to do. I mean, don't you expect to get paid for the time you spend working for someone else? It's the same concept. If an artist is going to spend three hours making something for you, then they should at least get minimum wage for those three hours.
Definitely do more of these. Make it into a Challenge episode! 2 people. 3 rolls of the randomizer to pick the best topic. Each contestant can pick their own type of designer and the best result wins. (Or something)
I also work on Fiverr as an Illutrator and live from the earnings, the reason why many Illustrators(so do I) ask for a s**t load of information is because most peoples are like "yeah I want a dog with sun glasses, do whatever you want" and at the end once you deliver they are like "Yeah no I dont like it. i want it to be a Dachsund with only 3 legs, and grey/brown legs but one ear needs to be white and the glasses i want them green, from Rayban, but with 1 broken glass!!!!"

I have absolute respect for fashion designers now. They are very serious and take pride in their design, put in the brain and the hours to do it. Loved both work from the 2 fashion designers.
I think his treadmill actually fits the description. if you look at the part where you walk on, towards the front it has 2 screws not 1, meaning it can move up or down between those two screws. if someone were walking towards the front of the treadmill, then it would be like walking on level floor, but the farther back you walk on the treadmill, the higher up the incline is. you can even see that the front is supported by rubber, the only thing I would add would be wheels to the back so the transition from walking on the front to the back is nice and even. I think that it was honestly a really well thought out, and made to order for a good price!

Agreed. I mean it's impressive to design and prototype something like that from scratch and all, but I literally had something almost like that when I was kid. It was a towel that folded into a backpack. The backpack wasn't even attached to the towel, the towel itself would literally fold into the backpack using a string on one end or something like that.
It was VERY clever, and was also useful. That hammock is going to smell REALLY bad after a week in the wilderness though lol.
I like the backpack more, he did say he wants to go to the mountains, hike and stuff, you can't really do that with the first design, that's more of a beach design (It just doesn't look comfortable enough to wear for hours or days in a harsh environment). I guess that's why teachers always say that we have to read every question carefully. But what do I know, I can only speak for myself.

It does overlap a lot with mechanical engineering, but it also focuses on experience, interaction and ergonomics of the product itself.

Industrial engineering as a different field with slight overlaps, and product engineering is usually a job title for mechanical engineers working on consumer products.

I also work on Fiverr as an Illutrator and live from the earnings, the reason why many Illustrators(so do I) ask for a s**t load of information is because most peoples are like "yeah I want a dog with sun glasses, do whatever you want" and at the end once you deliver they are like "Yeah no I dont like it. i want it to be a Dachsund with only 3 legs, and grey/brown legs but one ear needs to be white and the glasses i want them green, from Rayban, but with 1 broken glass!!!!"

I think his treadmill actually fits the description.
if you look at the part where you walk on, towards the front it has 2 screws not 1, meaning it can move up or down between those two screws.
if someone were walking towards the front of the treadmill, then it would be like walking on level floor, but the farther back you walk on the treadmill, the higher up the incline is. you can even see that the front is supported by rubber, the only thing I would add would be wheels to the back so the transition from walking on the front to the back is nice and even.
I think that it was honestly a really well thought out, and made to order for a good price!
