      @@randomnickify unfortunately that is how supply and demand works. Whenever I sell something, it’s in addition to my day job, so I’m not looking to make a whole lot of money, I’m looking to get enough for what it is. so I make sure it’s priced appropriately but also make sure it’s the cheapest listing so it gets the sale over those who choose to charge more. You can be mad at people who do a good job for less money but in the end who do you really have to blame?

    As an asset lead in the VFX industry I congratulate the artists on the work they did for the price they charged. I also believe they undersold themselves and should value their skill more (the second artist was closest to cost for value). From what I saw just in this video there was no huge skillgap like Squidmar and Thorbjorn proclaimed when the fine details weren't there. You simply got what you paid for. It's great and all to sell a 500+ sculpt for 120 dollars, but unless you live in a very cheap country then it wont be sustainable and you hurt the working rates of artists around you. The $450 sculpt was the best in my opinion and you could tell Thorbjorn was a little taken back compared to his more then double priced second fiddle. Fun vid overall

    I have a question because i really have no idea how these processes work… the last artist. He said he’d charge 1000 euros for that sculpt. But then there was a discussion about some changes you might need to have made, and then a further step about prepping it to be print ready. Would a good client understand this to be part of that 1000 euros or would those things be an additional charge, and if so how much extra? And about changes…. If a client says, “please change x, y, and z”… at what point does the artist think “yeah that’s par for the course” and at what point does the artist think “this is not okay”?

    • @VertexMachina
      @VertexMachina ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've never been a freelance sculptor, but I've dealt with a few professionally. It's pretty common to want revisions, so this should be a conversation that the sculptor and client have before starting work. The price could include one or two rounds of revisions, or revisions could be at an additional cost, negotiated when they are requested. If the agreement was to provide a print-ready sculpt for 1000 euros, then I'd expect prepping for print be free. If not, then it may cost extra.

    • @partobakhtiary7954
      @partobakhtiary7954 ปีที่แล้ว

      Heya. Im an artist.
      Basically, you should discuss this with the artist beforehand. Most artists dont charge anything for slight changes. However if the changes are big or there is too many of them, some artists charge an additional price. (Keep in mind this is if you failed to mention exactly what you wanted in the first place. If you mentioned a detail and the artist forgot to put it in, thats on them. But if you change your mind after seeing the result, thats when charges take place)
      There is also a time limit on this. So you cant go back after like a year of ordering to ask for changes.

    First one was really good although I preferred the throne from the third one because the fungernails on the first had an odd lip on the underside, while the muscles on the thirds body didn't really match the age of the person

    Well, I really find this a bit disappointing, I am the sculptor of the 2nd model, in my defense I was only 3 months old as far as digital sculpture is concerned, (that's why the low price).
    Likewise, I also communicated many times and sent images and work processes for you to correct me and receive decent feedback, which I never received. The only feedback I received was "Thank you man! I'm happy with the end result if you are :)"
    I am aware that at that time maybe my level was not on such a scale, but I tried. Despite being willing to apply changes and modify the order, I never received any kind of feedback.
    In part I understand it because you must be a very busy person with all your projects, but I don't think that way of "smearing" is correct.
    Anyway, I really appreciate the opportunity and the delayed feedback I just received. Thanks to this work I decided to practice daily and I plan to continue.
    I hope your work continues to advance and don't throw artists who are just starting out so far down. (or at least give them good feedback so they can grow as artists)

      I feel you bro, I’ve been practicing for 2~ish years now and watching this video is super discouraging, like people like them make me feel I shouldn’t really continue… I know your comment isn’t about negativity but rather the frustration from the lack of feedback only to be “exposed” super publicly just for views.
      As a software developer myself I know how frustrating it is that a client tells you that everything is fine only to get told when you deliver the end product that it isn’t what they expected, which is why we have regular contact, schedule meetings and review with them closely to check on the progress, if the client isn’t willing to put in some effort to communicate with us why even bother working on their project. If they are super busy to even give a good and objective reply why even commission work in the first place…

      Is this quality with the 3 months old experience?? Dude don't let this video discourage you. 4 days is a really short period of time for 3d sculpting and I think you did a excellent job.

      Kinda sucks that he didn't respond, but I don't think he smeared you in any way, it was just pure honesty. You absolutely do need improvement and you shouldn't take that criticism as unjust or unfair, you should take it as truth and continue your craft and expand your knowledge and skill level. Every artist was once at your level, they got better because they didn't give up, they loved improvement, and they took criticism and harnessed it well.
      Next time instead of putting the blame on the client because you feel bad and hurt (that's not to insult you, that is just how our egos work and we all have to deal with it alongside you, even if we don't think it's ego, it is.) Consider yourself to be "responsible" and push for your own improvement, even if you think your critics were unfair and rude. The only way to get to a point where you can reasonably judge a critic, is to be worthy of opposing judgment, and that must be earned through skill and improvement.
      Again I hope you understand I am not trying to upset you with this, it simply it truth and all of us must be willing to take hurtful truths and apply them well. Our egos blind that, they make us think "Who is he to judge me! He didn't even tell me this and this and also this! It is his fault and not mine!" even when this IS the case like you stated here with your comment, would you have been able to beat the other $120 dollar guy with constructive feedback? Or would you have still fallen short?
      The first guy showed humility through not needing feedback. If you didn't get feedback, neither did he, and yet you were outperformed. Why? Guy 1 simply has more skill, and is humble enough to undercharge his product for seemingly no reason other than he doesn't believe it is worth more (just an assumption could be totally wrong). Even if he did complain, he at least had earned thr right to do so through his obvious skill. You're not there yet, and that is absolutely okay, just be willing to humble yourself and realize that before you place blame onto your external surroundings, place blame on yourself. This applies to every person in every skill, to become the best, you must be responsible for not being the best. Otherwise no matter what happens "external problems" are going to be your demise and will hold you back from improvement.
      Don't be discouraged, be encouraged to be Guy number 1, and then the $450 dollar guy, and through that encouragement you will become $1000 dollar guy.

    $1,000 for four days work from a high level creative is still not a lot. I used to freelance design retail furniture and my rate would have been perhaps 40% higher.

      @@boozebeard9501 Fair point, it is the market forces that determine the rate one can achieve as much as the skill level of the practitioner. I suppose a bigger challenge that the rate is how busy one is - one of these jobs a week is a comfortable income, one every two or three weeks is not!

    feel like second to last did best and stayed more true to the sketch. especially the face and how he looks at the rat with a lot of personality. while the last one had more details like those crazy ripped side abs but he seemed to look past the rat rather than at it.
