The Lap Time That Fooled the Industry - Nissan’s Nurburgring Lap Record Scandal

- Documenting the controversial 2013 lap time record of the Nissan GT-R Nismo Edition. The formidable Nürburgring Nordschleife is an international proving ground for car makers around the world. Watch this video to find out how Nissan and others have cheated official Nürburgring lap records.
This video mentions:
Nissan, NISMO, Nissan GT-R, GTR, JDM, Nürburgring, Nürburgring Nordschleife, Porsche, Porsche 918, Ferrari, La Ferrari, McLaren, McLaren P1, Supercars, fastest lap times, Honda, Civic Type R, Type R, FL5, Radical SR8, Dodge Viper, Viper ACR, C7 Stingray, Gumpert Apollo Sport.

I wasn't really aware that people still took criticism of the GTR so hard. I guess it didn't help that I mentioned like five other manufacturers who also cheated or manipulated lap times. I even praised the GTR stating that it didn't need a lap record, and it would be LEGENDARY in it's own right with no record at all 🤷♂
Anyways, regarding the N-Attack Package:
- This is nothing like the Weissach package, which was available from factory, upon release, to all customers, internationally; and was practically carbon bits and magnesium wheels that only saved 90lbs.
- The N-Attack package was not offered as an option/package until 9 MONTHS after the record attempt (it was first offered July 23, 2014), and only in Japan initially at the Omori factory. www.nismo.co.jp/en/news_list/2014/news_flash/140006.html
- The Nissan GT-R NISMO PRODUCTION CAR was available in Japan in late February 2014. Needless to say, the N Attack package would have been installed after the OFFICIAL RELEASE of the Production Nismo GTR 35. That is unless the customer ordered the car 6 months or more after it's release, when the kit was first available (in Japan). US and Euro release were an even later date.
- Bringing it altogether now: Nissan and Ghosn claimed worlds fastest VOLUME PRODUCTION CAR, thus the claim was easily disputed given the details above, and the record was never made official. This is secondary to the fact that Nissan AND it's engineers openly admitted to the car being heavily modified with a performance package that was vaguely and partially specified, nor available at the time of the production car's release. This video simply documents the controversy that is now a whole decade or more old 💁♂

@@borgholable This was our second video ever, which was published over 8 months ago. We've made multiple application and hardware changes since then.
Bgm gets too loud during parts of the video (like around 1:12),making it hard to understand
Yeah multiple points in the video where the voice audio was lower than the background. Really hard to understand.
Also it's alleged the FL5 had cooling upgrades, shorter final drive or 6th gear and more power than stock due to more boost pressure.
Yes it was slightly modified to manipulate it’s time but Honda Boys are silent.
@@voodoodiecast any car, even especially the german brands like Porsche, can be modified because there is no independent body that checks the cars. And this is in Germany, so the German brands have "home court" advantage.
Nurburgring times are irrelevant to real enthusiasts anyway, no real enthusiast would take their car to the track for serious lapping without modifying anything. Racing brake pads, track wheel alignment, and racing tires are pretty much standard for anyone who knows anything about taking cars to track days.
Maybe trust fund kids would like to brag about their car's Nurburgring times, but that's about it.
I think people get less up in arms about that because its not like its competing at the top, and besides the 6th gear which is rather trick the rest can be passed off as track-modified street car. It is still a lie all the same calling it production but very few care about FWD records, its just neat if a spicy family hatch can go about that fast in general.
@@voodoodiecast The Honda Boys are saying that it was actually a higher-spec limited edition trim that went on track and that Honda is going to release this trim soon™

How on earth does this have less than 100 views? Your videos are absolute quality! Well done sir!
Well, the mixing certainly doesn't help
Maybe its like the fact that the GTR is really getting on in years ? Also it's proof that Nissan is getting lazy when it comes to producing the R35's successor !! But who cares if its gonna be a EV GTR ? Thats just pathetic and its sad that we are allowing this change to electric power to happen. Especially since ICE are running the cleanest they ever have and how damaging to the environment extracting the metals needed to produce a EV !!! 120 pounds of copper alone in one Tesla model 3 ! Times that by all the EV's tesla makes then by the amount of other manufacturers and the use of copper alone will drain our planets resources of copper very quickly !!!
Good video, but you didn’t mention that Nissan offered the N Attack Package to customers which is a modifications package matching the lap record car. I don’t see how that is different from Porsche offering the Weissach Packages to match their record lap modifications.
Thanks! The thing is that when they announced their lap record they never marketed it as a N Attack. They led the public to believe the heavily modified car was just the new NISMO R35. The N Attack was only a thing after the industry discovered their record car was heavily modified. Porsche on the other hand was fully transparent about the Weissach modifications, from the get go in fact, even from the prototype testing phase.
I hope you're kidding.
Weissach pack includes carbon parts. Instead of ABS plastic. (Just to mention here ABS plastic is lighter than Carbon, before anyone want to mention performance increase from it).
Usually the advantage is the front hood which is crabon fiber instead of alu, the wheels, and exhaust. That's all. Weissach is mostly cosmetic. (Plus the the weissach cage adds weight 16,8kg! )
But what you mention N attack pack is a full different thing. Different suspension, different brake pads, different LSD, different ECU program, and the aero parts etc etc... So these're hardware and software changes.
@@FreestylerAlbertI can only assume they meant manthey
@@noncog1 even then manthey is independent from porsche. It's a racing team and like brabus or RUF they sell modded cars. The manufacturer just works with them to supply the car.

I remember raising em eyebrow when Lamborghini claimed the Huracan Perf set the record, ousting the 918…..I’m still skeptical. Great video man!
Agreed, I share the same skepticism about the Perf haha
I will continue to say it. The modern performance auto industry, specifically Porsche fans owe almost everything to the 07 Nissan GT-R
Its forgotten now by many. The r35 changed the entire automotive idustry. Its performance made every super car a joke. The r35 predicted the future by making a statement that automakers had to respond to.
Couldn’t have said it any better
You saying that as of Porsche wasn’t doing anything before the R35 Fanboy-R arrived. 993 GT’s 996 GT were far better than what Nissan had during that time. The R35 Fanboy-R was remarkable but stop the glaze, nobody owes that car anything.

Problem is that you cannot compare laptimes by magazine to one by their test pilots.
After all these years Porsche fanboys still cant get over the fact that their 911 was beaten on its home turf and had multiple races specifically in Japanese program Best motoring was beaten fair and square in multiple race tracks in japan.
1000% - Even today most 911's non electric would have a hard time keeping up with a Nismo on a track.
How about the international race competition to measure the potential with huge amount 😅of regulations and rules ?
At the end its not about the lap time record that we have to argue and debate. Just chill and enjoy the car with their own culture and soul. As a car enthusiast, we want both of them.

Just more props to GM not modifying its C8 Z06 to give us a false narrative of lap time at the ring. They stayed true to its stock DCT and left the tall overdrive gears in which hurt its outright lap time by 5+ seconds or more cause of how much the revs dropped in the top gears on the very long straight at the end of a Nurburgring lap.
It wasn't ran by GM it was ran buy Top auto. A German car reviewing group. GM like many other car manufacturers would prolly alter said 'stock' car to archive their desired target too.
@@Olabruh, you’re correct. It is sport auto magazine - a nice magazine, too.
GM spent decades fine testing Corvettes in the Nurburgring.
@@Olabruh GM has never done that. You shouldn't put that negative on them. They aren't Porsche or Nissan. They don't even care about ring times
Nobody should ever take these so called lap records too seriously. At the end of the day, even if you buy the car, 99.9% chance you will not come even close to what the car can actually do on this track, so your focus should be on things like whether you like the styling of the car, the way it drives, is it fast enough for you etc. You don't go around telling people how fast your car can lap the Nurburgring....Or do you?
Innovation excites people :) we want to keep the evolutions going
Looks like you made a mistake in the stats of the Honda

SHOCKING!
Overarching … not overreaching. And you pronunciation of the NUR BERG RING sounds like new burg ring but with a strange rhythm. Very curious. Otherwise, good subject and lovely visuals! was that gt7 footage at the end?
Those weren't even the only words... Plethora, Nordschleife and a few more I can't remember. Interesting video but very very strange speech patterns lol.
Nice work very thorough and balanced. But...Ghosn like Flavio Briatore would never lie or cheat!!!
Just for accuracy- The Apollo hp was shown at 650hp.. 50hp more than the claimed Nismo 600hp (not 100hp)
Watching this and reading the comments now that Nissan is on the brink of bankruptcy makes me think someone at Nissan lost the plot. Clearly they can make great cars, however they got the time. But at least in the US, they are best known for selling cars with bad CVTs and to people with bad credit. Sad.
I knew that the music sounded like need for speed 2......... Wow that's been a long time since I've heard that song!
If Nissan was half as good as they claim to be, they'd be as successful as Porsche in motor racing.
GTR is a grand touring car, similar to Porsche 928. Heavy, comfortable long ride at 3800 lbs. Porsche 911 at 3200 with same horsepower is at advantage.
BMW outsell GTR at same price. How would they profit a pure 2 seater race car at 100k? 370z can be lightened with aluminum chassis, smaller v6, rear mounted accessories, transmission in the rear for balance, would anyone buy it?
Porsche cars in GT2 and GT3 are not the cars sold in dealerships, its tubular space frame chassis of space grade materials compared to retail's thick aluminium panels and pillars. Racing is to show off their technical and science prowess, and slap 10-30k extra on your retail car (because they need the money to fund their racing program).
You want to watch Touring Car series if dealership cars are what you want. Even then, BMW M3 were known to use completely different suspension than retail, evident is 1992 Group A DTM suspension from E30, looks like a double wishbone trailing arm hybrid while retail cars were basic semi-trailing arm.
You do not compare F1 or GT racing to the car on a driveway. A race car's "billet engine" lasting a fee hours before breaking, it wont warm up driving on streets, you need constant max revving at 8000 rpm, that 700 hp has no place in civilization.
I'd never compare a Boeing military jet to the commercial 747.
I'm tired of explaining to people on these channels. They have business in motorsports. Almost none of you were trust fund kids, your parents never bought you a $3000 tailored suit and 8k party for middle school graduation. A 70k Patek Phillipe wristwatch and 80k sedan after high school. My mother spent 300k on swimming lessons and she doesnt swim! All of the current F1 racers are children of wealth.
Nissan was very succesful in racing series that featured homologation-rules, i.e. racing-versions of roadcars. Porsche is of course famous for their sucess in endurance racing, but those were built from the ground up as racecars, not meant for the road and hence not a good comparison there.
@destinilund4771 The GTR kept getting banned (e.g. in the Australian Supercars) for beating everyone else.
*edit* this comment was in reply to the OP, my apologies.
@@iliketoast-q9b you mean competing against themselves. group a regulations in japan had the r32 segregated into its own 3000cc division. subsequent cars on equal footing smacked the dogshit out of them in production based series.

my new favorite channel
Motor Magazine Australia compared both r35 and gt2 Porsche including lap times. The Nissan was out of its league by a long shot.
Why do car manufacturers have to hide modifications during lap times that break records? Why isn’t there an independent motor body that test cars for lap times against the manufacturers? Personally if I was buying a car it wouldn’t be for its record lap times. Most car manufacturers would make the test models quicker just to achieve lap records than the road going models for bragging rights? But that’s my opinion 😂
Can't hear the commentary due to the LOUD BACKGROUND MUSIC.
The Nissan used turbos from its gt3 nismo also
Moral of the story is whoever beat Porsche time at the ring , those manufacturers are cheat😂🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️

This proves how over hyped this track is. I'm with James May on this. 😂
Was the music from NFS 4?
@@АлексейКастевич Hi! This video includes music from NFS2 and NFS 3 Hot Pursuit
Great vid as usual. I looked at some old articles from that time and they posed the GTR lap time as a joke and was never taking seriously. Porsche and Ferrari were the production track weapons act the time especially the GT3 RS and Scuderia.
Shit on it if you want, but that time is still f-ing impressive for the price of the car. You canbuy it, modify the hell out of it and sve mooney in comparison to buying a slower more expensive car. They just showed what the car is capable of with small mods
But it's not the price of 'that' car. Still a great car either way.

@SpecMdriven every manufacturer is cheating on Ring, including porsche
Lol. This video is more crying from a GTR hater. The N-Attack package was made available. But when porsche used tyre heaters to set a lap record wont be mentioned. What a joke 😆
How is using tire heaters cheating? Its the same car, same tires, and anyone can warm their tires
How much copium you try to defend Nissan for this ?
Nissan always gets the hate that others don't for doing the same thing
Search "tires vs horsepower" on youtube, engineers and track mechsnics would explain. Back in the 90s, street racers would smoke their tires at full RPM middle of large crowds before a race. If you ever bought physical magazines back in 90s, warm tires on a radial or slick was more important than nitro or turbo.
nordschleife attack package? And how many where made 🤔 I love GT-R's but c'mon, it's common knowledge that many car manufacturers were doing this kind of tuning specific to this track to get better #'s.

All the nissan fan boys lol. Its a fast v6 car but thats about it, its isnt bad its just not what nissan fan boys think it is lmao I mean comon its been almost 20 years and nissan is having trouble staying aflot now hahaha nuff said. Nvm when you look at a nissan fan boys comment they say " its the fastest car in the world" then when it gets beat they say " oh we just meant in this class of racing " then it gets beat in that class and it becomes " oh just against other cars that weigh the same " etc so i can see why it never sold the way they expected it to and thankfully it didnt lol
Illiterate
I like the GT-Rs. From 32 to 35, all great cars. Currently in the process of finally buying an r35.
Your comment makes me curious about 2 things.
1.who hurt you? The GTR IS what people say it is. A bargain beast. Its already 18 years old, yet still beats new "sports" cars without having any major changes done from 2007.
2. So what is a "good car" then? Bmw? Mercedes? Dodges? Please don't tell me you're one of those stupid supercar cucks, that think ferrari/lamborghini is the peak of cars, because theyre just luxury goods with inflated prices.
I don't get it how a boutique make, like porsche can sell the base shitbox for $120k, then sell the burger-ring tier option for 2 more cars, and people think "hey, this is a legitimate production car lap".
It's really the $5k honda civic meme with the $100k upgrades.
anyway, in regards to your video you leave to the imagination that the 2009 lap is not legitimate, because we are going to learn more about nissan and the laps. On the 2013 lap you said "...and then inevitably the truth came".
Are we still waiting for the truth to come out for the 2009 lap, or since it hasn't come out anything, the inevitable has happened, the 2009 lap is valid?
This would be so much better if the background music didn't drown out the voice over
Dislike for background music. Made it 1 min and 20 seconds, won't be finishing
i stoped exactly after 1:20.
Bruh, someone who has the money to be able to afford an R35 GTR doesn't care how they did it. They care a out the fact that they can make the same modifications to their to achieve such a laptime with that specific car. It's taking an F1 car around nordchleife with a full downforce rear wing, and then the same F1 car going around the traxk with a trimmed down rear wing. The fact ia it's still an F1 car. If I had an F1 car, I have the ability to choose from 2 different rear wings which will give me better or worse laptimes.
My brother in christ thats called lying to the consumer. And you are drinking the coolaid.
@@Olabruh Bruh, you have any idea that if something goes wrong on the car or you want to improve the performance there are aftermarket and oem parts available but they are always more expensive for the german cars than they are for jdms. It makes no sense to put the blame on the manufacturer when its a skill issue and slight difference in performance of a lap time when they actually factor in a lot of conditions like weather, fuel, weight, etc. If there’s an issue from factory there’s warranty and insurance. In the case of the german cars its worse because the variants in the models of the Porsche are too many and rare making the parts more expensive and hence higher running and maintenance costs. Whereas jdms stay with mostly the same stuff with few modifications making it easier to use similar aftermarket or oem as there are many in stock and costs less.
@@sishvik1735 this is invalid for 2 reasons.
If the manufacturer is the one chasing the laptime, cost of purchasing doesn't exist because they own and make the parts.
Also, the 2019 gtr and onwards is priced just as expensively as the germans. The gtr is no longer that supercar slayer on a budget.
This is called cope, and the marketing Nissan did with this is called bulls***.
Wowww I love the GTR !!! I'm definitely trading in my 2021 911 Turbo S and getting a Nismo GTR. The GTR seems like a more fun car than my 911 Turbo S
Nismo better car so go for it. Plus any porsche other than a RS3 depreciates way more than any NISMO will.
Cry about Nissan's sped more pls🙏🙏🙏
The most overrated and overpriced car in history. The car nobody buys, but somehow, everybody wants.
GTR even today is fast as F and way easier to modify than any German car.
First it’s worth it, second it’s not over rated, third it’s cheap, forth it’s a super car killer, fifth it’s 4 seats and big, sixth it’s AWD, seventh it’s easy to upgrade midfield
Nowadays people are so obsessed with lap times and probably some even choose cars based on that. So do you really wonder that manufacturers cheat? I mean it's business.
All the losers' supercars manufacturers must have paid a lot of money for this channel to defame Nissan. Nissan should sue this channel & the rest of the crooked supercars manufacturers.
What a Joke. - GTR haters.
I actually love the R35 and consider the R33 NISMO 400R one of my holy grail dream cars. I also pointed out multiple other cars/brands that were not honest about lap times to make sure it's known that Nissan was not the only one 🤷♂
@@SpecMDriven People complaining that a GTR is overrated haven't driven one/or driven one fast and #2 think their bloated Porsh is still #1.
