+JD Rock So a lot of people have asked me why my Top 10 Doom Wads is gone. Freedom made a copyright claim for 10 seconds of music and had to ability to put a strike against my channel (even though the claim was not legitimate). I will redo the video once I am done UV on the new Doom :)
It absolutely fucking wasn't. As soon as Doom was in development, the devs had the chance to use the Alien IP to create an Alien game instead. But since it clashed with their own vision, they refused to do it.
Amazing list, one of the few that doesnt have brutal doom, which i enjoy but stays behind other great mods on this list. Sadly _newcomers_ think brutal is the one and only mod for doom and some will probably get obnoxious in the comments
Some of those look really cool, I'll make sure to try them later on. I'm playing Valiant right now, and although there are some parts where there's too much trial and error (Ridiculously difficult situations where it's hard to get out alive on the first try... ), it has some great level design, unique monsters and, of course, the modified handgun and chaingun, which kick ass. I bet it gets really easy if you play it with some friends. Too bad it doesn't allow you to jump :( Then again, it's a mod that strictly doesn't need jumping, because you could grab some key items or reach secrets through easy (and unfair) ways. The other one I've played is Stronghold. It's one of the best mods I've ever played, totally recommended. Thumbs up to your video, mister! EDIT: You can actually enable jumping, I just had it disabled for some reason. Either way, I don't use it to grab items or reach secret areas in ways they're not supposed to be encountered.
I'd put BRUTAL DOOM (with "Starter Pack" maps) at #1. It's just... SO GOOD! It's also the only mod I can think of to be released in both 2015 & 2016 at the same time. (It was released on December 31st, at 5:00 PM on the East Coast of the US.)
Who else downloaded every mod mentioned as it was being said? I absolutely love this game's community, my mod folder for GZDoom (from which i can easily choose and use with ZDL) is probably the largest thing on my harddrive. Long live Doom! \m/
Didn't know about the last two mods, thanks, they look awesome. BUT. I can't believe Demonsteele is not on your list. My favourite doom mod ever, turn Doom into a hack n' slash shooter with lots of skills and even two characters to choose from
whoa I totally forgot about that Aliens total conversion! This is what actually brought me here. Does anyone else remember a .wad file that replaced the sounds? I think it was called "aliens.wad" or something along those lines. I remember there was sounds in the file that replaced many sounds in Doom. Specifically, when you'd alert the demons, such as shotgun guy and the zombie rifleman, they'd yell Hudson's line "There they go let's get'em!" And when they'd die, they'd do Drake's death from acid scream or yell out "Muthafucka!" like Hudson did during his last stand. It also made the plasma gun sound like the pulse rifle, and the pistol sound like Gorman's pistol. I can't remember if there was anything else it replaced, but those were all stand outs to me, especially being only maybe 12-13 at the time, my uncle would get mad at me if I put the .wad file in, because of the swearing. I did it anyways after and would turn the sound down low enough for me to hear it, because it brought a whole other level of enjoyment. Anyways, sorry about the long post. anyone else remember this?
As cool as these are, I can't get over how a lot of the "new" monsters are just enemies from Duke Nukem or Hexen. I find that pretty amusing. However, I won't fault the creators of the mods for finding creative uses for existing assets. Very well done!
You've earned a sub, i'm a huge doom fan and this video was well done. Valiant wad had some of the best maps i've seen in years! I Highly recommend you check out Prodoomer wad very good mod.

+JD Rock Yea still i enjoy your videos even though it's varied. Sunlust have great levels and i like maps that provide a good challenge. Prodoomer is quite challenging as well but there is very much content and leveling but it still feels like doom.

I'm glad Brutal Doom didn't make the list. It's literally everywhere and it's quite annoying when I try to look up either deathmatch games or just Doom gameplay in general.

Legacy of suffering seem to eat its morning PainKiller (along with the music and the rocket/minigun weapon) as for myself i think Demon Eclipse is pretty badass
JD I loved your first Doom wads video, it was well scripted, researched, edited, had amazing gameplay footage and great wads listed. Is there a way you could upload a slightly edited version removing any content that caused copyright claims to be made or upload it to another place?
JD Rock I also had a suggestion for a top 10.. TOP 10 DOOM 2 MAP30s!! Sounds like a sweet Idea, some suggestions would be 1monster map 30,CChest map 30, and so on.
I used to have Skullfrag on my PC back in the day and I used to play this mod that added the Modern Warfare 2 weapons and perks to Doom. I don't remember what it was called but I spent soooooo much time playing it.

I LOVE Doom mods. The only thing I don't like is when people get all "I'm going to improve the graphics!" No... why? To those people I say look at all the creative and artistic stuff people are doing with the graphics as is AND IT WORKS. Please leave the graphics alone. Perhaps take a Code Monkeys approach and only provide higher res where specifically needed and only as needed.
The Ultimate Torment and Torture. I busted a gut when I heard UT99 and UT2k4 music in it. It's a fun WAD to burn through with Russian Overkill. So many demons to blast through.
I loved the lost lagoon levels of Pirate Doom, with the masked warriors and shamans/arch-viles. Shotguns are kind of like beer, the more barrels the better! Plus, I've just downloaded Ultimate Torment & Torture after seeing this preview!
"The Island" wad is a fun concept but it has several graphical glitches, probably because I'm playing it on GZDoom 4.8.2 and it's meant to run on ZDoom 1.0.0 haha :)

+DarkDemonXR generally, levels wads are compatible with both brutal doom and project brutality, so for instance you can't use brutal doom with stronghold
I know this is old, but in case you haven't found it yet, the remake of this E4M1 track (Also E1M8) is by Sonic Clang and can be downloaded (don't remember where by itself) or found in the Classic Doom 3 MOD for Doom 3 which was an attempt to recreate the first episode of Doom into Doom 3! Several other tracks were remade by Sonic Clang and are also found in the Classic Doom 3 MOD as well. A remake of E1M6's BGM in the Classic Doom 3 MOD pack also by Sonic Clang (obviously! - lol) rocks, too!
These look fantastic I do however love a good craggy hell level or ten lol with some very great set pieces level design a few artistic elements like the hell runes on the flor in one of the maps in PL2 also great architecture like that of valiant and temple of the lizard men. Got any other suggestions following that criteria?
Brutal is the best. I still love Legacy engine though. My favorite mods or wads back in the 90's were Happy DooM, AOD, and all those awesome sound wads that replaced the music with Nirvana and NIN.
I would love to play those but not enough though... I couldnt even find a good doom map to play Complex Clusterfuck (for GZdoom) or God Complex (for Zandronum)... Is there any recommended maps/wads that satisfies
Good list but have you tried Russian Overkill or Guncaster from PillowBlaster? Kontra Kommando made a really fun and challenging Aliens mod as well. Check them out i think you will like them :)
This is probably a stupid question, but although I've been playing Doom 2 and other early DOS shooters my whole life, I'm new to the modding thing for doom. What's the difference between Mods and WADs?
God I love the Doom community. Seems like it's going stronger than ever and the improvements over the last 5 years have been amazing

Good video. Reviews could be more focused, though. And, most importantly: you definitely SHOULDN'T spoil things (more specifically the final bosses)
While I agree the bosses being spoiled may be annoying, the bosses can also be seen as integral parts of the mods and as reasons to play them.

Number 4 "temple of the lizard men" mod definitely is based on the game Hexen. Those were the same monsters and also was a good game back then

There's a new that uses GZDoom and Doom 2 to create a sequel to Wolfenstein 3D called Blade of Agony. Very well made. Few things beat killing Nazis.
