Bonjour! I laughed when you said “Emily in Paris Look” 😂 We just got back from vacation in Paris. I have to say Paris had been Americanized somewhat, I saw fanny packs, leggings, short shorts, Hawaiian shirts, outdoor sandals, designer logos overkill, stilettos… everything goes. Of course on average there are more well dressed people in Paris than in any big American cities, it’s also because there are far less obese people in Paris. Thank you for making this video, we need to be reminded to dress respectfully and appropriately, and be mindful of the culture and occasion when in public. Paris is such a beautiful city, let’s hope it keeps its dress code. Merci!

@@dawndarner6876 Young people dress similar everywhere so the young ones were probably Parisians although they are also likely much slimmer than the youth in some other countries. But if she was there during peak tourist season a lot of those she saw were probably tourists especially if she was in the tourist areas. You cannot really understand a city and its inhabitants if you only spend a few days there and you stay in the tourist area. I learned that hearing people describe their visits to places I’ve lived. They weren’t describing the city I lived in and knew well.

Absolutely spot on! As an American I can always spot other tourists. One way I make traveling easier is to select fewer items in a limited color palette. I remember seeing “Sex in the City” when the SJP character went to Paris and wore an enormous tulle skirt with sky high white stilettos (to walk the streets no less!) and of course every outfit was over-the-top. I have never seen anything like that when I visit Paris. As you say, the French women wear tailored, simple, elegant clothing. They are neither garish nor sloppy. I love visiting your beautiful city and hope to return one day. Thank you for your good work.

Thank you, Marie- Anne for your video. I was in Paris last week and I was in a shoe shop called Jonak buying a Mary Jane ballerina. A lady working there thought I was someone who lives in Paris. I took it as a compliment and thanked you with a smile. I was happy I didn't look like someone who came from Oslo. Fashion here among youngster are all about brands. In contrast to Oslo I thought young people in Paris chose vintage clothes and they look fabulous.

My husband and I went to Paris in 2013 for our 20th anniversary. We were in the 16th I believe. We were able to walk to Eiffel tower even though it was a long walk. I wore mostly dark jeans, cotton sweaters a leather jacket ( we were there in Sept.) and had a,few scarves with me. I wore loafer type shoes except for dinner. I wore black cotton trousers with a variety of blouses and low heeled shoes. I'm pretty certain I was spotted as a tourist anyway. We did master the metro system and went all over using it. Loved Paris. Saw so much and ate so much!

It is fascinating to note that people who quite often look presentable at home seem to be taken over by madness while travelling in foreign climes. The reason oft given is I JUST WANT TO BE COMFORTABLE. Well one can be perfectly comfortable and still be quietly chic. I always feel that while visiting other countries we must show respect in our attire our manners and our general behavior. Imagine having lunch with friends. We like to look smart ,well groomed and not at all over the top . This is such a simple message and yet one that many of us forget. If we imagine that we have a little Marie Anne suggestion book tucked away with our passports in our handbags which are not covered in fashion logos we should never go wrong.

One of the nicest compliments I had in Florence was a local assuming I was one as well when she asked me a question in the post office. Googling photos of street scenes (in non-touristy areas) is a great way to get a sense of local style.

As usual, excellent points. I would only add that a simple and comfortable outfit for travelling on the plane is essential. God forbid there’s an emergency, but it’s best to be prepared. I’ve just returned from six weeks in Portugal and Spain, on and off multiple flights and trains. Sturdy sneakers (all one dark colour, no bright stripes etc.), comfortable black bamboo pants and T-shirt, a linen/cotton shirt as a jacket (it was super hot weather), and a cashmere wrap. Perfect. Once there, I upped my game and dressed more appropriately for the venues I was visiting. P.S. Thanks for the mention of “Maid of the Mist”! 🇨🇦

Yes, wearing natural fabrics on a plane is important. Synthetic fibers can melt into your skin.

Years ago when I took flying lessons, I was told to always dress for a plane crash (while flying, that is), and I do that for commercial travel. Jeans and tennies, natural fibers. I see women in the terminal wearing platform shoes and short-shorts, and I think, "Is that what you want to be wearing if you have to climb out of a plane crash?" No shorts, high heels, flippity-flops, polyester fleece - none of that, y'all!

I had the pleasure of living in Paris for a few months some years ago. One of the things I did beforehand was to watch every video I could find that showed how to dress and act in Paris. I didn't want to look like a tourist! And, I was able to wear a casual, chic look that worked. As you mentioned, there are lots of pick pockets near the touristy sites for a reason - because they know how the typical tourists look and those are the people they target. It was wonderful to be able to walk the streets and not be mistaken for a tourist! Very good advice, Marie-Anne.

Hi Marie-Anne, I had the huge priviledge of living in France for 5 years and I can assure you that your words of style and dressing wisdom ring so true in my opinion. I now live in another European capital and my observation also is that The European Style is indeed more traditional, so classic and elegant - not at all "contrived" or inappropriate. We can all take some lessons from your video today no matter where we live or where we travel. Thank you. xx

10 days ago I returned from my dream trip to Venice. Most of the tourists I saw were dressed in t-shirts, shorts and backpacks... Meanwhile, I boarded my gondola wearing a fitted red linen dress, big black sunglasses, a cute hat with a black ribbon, black sandals and a big beige lace parasol...... I can't understand how people go so casual.....if I'm not dressed elegantly in a gondola strolling through Venice... When? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂Thank you dear Marie-Anne.... We hope from now ladies will do the effort 😘

👏🏼 Bravissima for dressing elegantly on the gondola. What a special event it is. I rode on a gondola once, but I wasn’t quite as elegant as you. It was quite an overcast day, I was wearing an oversized Polo (yes, by Ralph Lauren-nothing against the brand though-it’s just that the outfit was unflattering and too masculine for my body type) shirt and jacket, a holdover from my high school years, which I should have retired by then (I was in college at that time). I should have worn my LBD with a scarf instead. You inspired me to dress more elegantly on my next gondola ride in Venice. Ciao Bella! 🇮🇹

@@nataliamiles7109 I was not surprised about your high heels, but “BAN NUCLEAR POWER NOW”-you have come a long way! Yes, I wore terrible outfits in my teens and 20s. That nude tank top with short shorts I wore on my teens is cringeworthy. I dumped my NBA caps that I thought looked cool (now that I look back, they didn’t look good on me) as well-I had an obsession with basketball in high school (started when my brother coaxed me into playing an NBA video game so he could have an opponent), and thank goodness, that phase passed (nothing against the NBA though).

I usually wear jeans, nice sneakers or boots, a v-neck top, and jewelry while on vacation. I also bring either a leather jacket or a jean jacket. Both are really comfortable and I think the leather jacket looks un-touristy. I noticed on one trip to Paris that people would come up and speak in French to me unless I was wearing my Dansko clogs. Living in Silicon Valley, I saw far too many super casual outfits on high tech workers each and every day: jeans with t-shirts and flip flops. If you dress up, you stand out, and those in the super casual outfits do not like to see the diversity of an elegant person.

  • @polishtheday
    @polishtheday 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

I agree with most of the points you make and would add that the expensive look, the sexy look and the Emily in Paris look shouldn’t be worn ever. Not in Paris. Not in Europe. Not anywhere else.
The two examples where I don’t agree are the tourist look and the sporty look.
I wear my belt bag/bum bag/fanny pack daily, sometimes on my waist and sometimes as a crossbody. It doesn’t look like the kind the tourists carry. I have them in several colours but wear the plain black one the most. They’re indispensable if you have a dog, useful for going for a walk, on the treadmill at the gym or while shopping. They hold only the essentials - phone, keys, lip gloss, hand lotion, comb, a reusable shopping bag, or every thing you need if you’re only going to be out for a couple of hours. I rarely carry a purse anymore. Other aspects of the tourist look are practical too. A backpack is good for carrying groceries home, an extra sweater and umbrella, a tablet, laptop or notebook if you’re going to classes or even a change of clothes for after the gym. These are things I might do even as a tourist so they go with me when I travel.
My daily sporty look - worn most of the day because I when I’m outside of the house I’m moving - doesn’t look anything like those extreme ones shown in the illustrations. I wouldn’t step outside the house dressed to draw attention to my body. I’m happy with my body. I just don’t think it’s classy to dress like that. I wear thick leggings, mostly to keep warm, that don’t show every lump and bump, a turtleneck top and a jacket, all colour coordinated. It’s a fairly classic look that I’d probably wear to run errands anywhere including Paris. I probably wouldn’t wear it for brunch or to a museum but it works for everyday wear.
If I visited Paris on a hot day in summer I’d probably wear a dress,
skirt or culottes just as I do to go for brunch or visit a museum back home. For other seasons it would be jeans or wide leg pants, a turtleneck, jacket and coat. I’d possibly dress a bit more casually for going for walks or grocery shopping and sporty clothes for runs along the river if I lived there. I don’t think I’d stand out as a tourist until I started to speak French :-)

Love this advice. I travel to France..mainly the Luberon, every year and travel light in black, white, beige, navy..a couple of classy scarves, one pair of dressy black slacks for evening with a pair of ballet flats… a Marinière shirt,a light weight blazer or sweater jacket ( I travel in mid Sept.) one black one beige and one white good t.shirts, a crew neck merino wool plain black, sweater,I stay at the same gite, and there are washing facilities…!,and also the owner is a dear friend and if necessary I can borrow rainwear and an umbrella and anything else!I have ked sneakers but also some rather clunky sandals for the marchés…I have a degree of arthritis and my feet are my weak point!and lastly a nice plain reversible black/ beige longish windbreaker. Jeans, beige and black straight legged slacks.
Same old silver earrings and plain silver necklace…I bring a couple of pendants which I can use for dress up.
Also a plain black, not too large, cross body purse and a small bag for evening. I am a photographer and thankfully,my equipment is much smaller and lighter now ..fits in the cross body.😊
I have definitely upped my game since following your channel…since the pandemic,I let things slide. Now I am freshening up! You would be surprised at how many cashmere sweaters I have found in the local thrift stores…😀😅😅

I wouldn't wear anything expensive in an unfamiliar area ever either. You're a target. I have been in the jungle in Costa Rica and Mexico and hiking clothes and a walking stick were a must on the volcanic terrain in Costa Rica with a fanny pack which is more secure and leaves me hands free to take photos and also when woods walking at home. Cover up as there's a lot of ticks in woodsy areas and had Lyme disease which had me sick for 8 months even with immediate treatment. Lesson learned. Good boots as I've seen rattlers. I guess I go appropriate for whenever I'm going. I like dresses when it's warm and in a concrete jungle. Less creepy crawlies.😂 I'm rather outdoorsy and have a bit of everything.

Hello from Texas! I know you must be so busy but I just want to take a moment of your time to share what an impact your message has had on my daily life. I'm sorry if this runs long but I just wanted to write this to let you know what a difference you are making. You are a lovely individual and your tone is so positive and encouraging which makes your message so much more powerful. ❤️
Some background, I am a full time employee, a mother of four children, a wife of thirteen years. I married my high-school sweetheart and he is a wonderful man who consistently tries to make me feel beautiful. Yet, I have never felt that way. I have struggled with my weight my entire life and having children affected that too., and i thought that maybe some girls were not meant to be pretty and I was one of them. I focused on other things. I thought i would feel more confident if I pursued education. Which I did and graduated with my masters in history. But that didn't change how I felt about myself either. It got to the point were sometimes I didn't want to leave the house because it didn't want other people to have to see me. I wanted to hide. I saw other women so put together and beautiful and I wondered why I couldn't get myself together. I thought maybe I was too self centered so I worked on my faith and focused on others, on the carraking of my family. This helped some. I could keep going but you get the idea. I was last on my list but trying my best to be a good well rounded person all the same. When I came across your videos I began to learn that I didn't have to be someone else, to be beautiful. I have my own style and my own strengths and your lessons have brought those to the surface. I may work from home but I get up and i am excited to get dressed every day. I love my clothes. I love myself and even my home is better tended. And I am happy to go out now. Not because I need or want people to look at me but because I know now that I was never an offense to look at. I am valuable. Thank you. I apologize if I didn't say this in a legible way but I just wanted you to know. God bless you and I hope he spreads your message to more women.

My go to look at home or on vacation is simple long trousers and a nice top. Years ago, my daughter and I went to Paris with a small group of women. One day a young couple from the U. S. Approached and asked if we spoke English. The ultimate compliment! My daughter was about 20 at the time and this was our 2nd trip together to another country. We have the best time on our travels because we research before we go. I love watching your channel. Thank you.

    Bonjour Marie-Anne.
I absolutely agree with you when you rightly advise not to wear expensive jewellery & designer bags or wearing a pair of jogging pants with a cap & rucksack. So many pickpockets are constantly on the lookout & holidaymakers their easy target.

Lovely style. Thanks for the advice. The only time I was in Paris was to present at an international conference and where skirt suits were still the style. Sure wish I had you as my packing guide for my off time. You always look appropriate. Reminds me of The Lost Art of Dress and the vintage fashion era when you dressed for the occasion. Keep up the lovely videos.

Marie-Anne, this information should be applicable anywhere in the world that people travel. Even in hotter climes, it's possible to look well put together without having a 'more than is appropriate' amount of skin showing. As I've learned from you, there are fabrics to wear in hot weather. Thank you for your good advice.

I am waiting with great anticipation the new film “ MRS. Harris goes to Paris “ . Do investigate this film which will be released in September. It will remind me so much of the excitement of the “ new look” which was really promoted by Christian Dior in 1947 after the depression of the war . I was only a child but my mother was swept off her feet . She followed a chic style for the rest of her very long life and thoroughly inculcated me .
PS . The new hair style is wonderful. A small change but so effective and modern .

After listening to your talk on Paris style I had to share with you. A few years ago my husband and I were out shopping in our country town. A older man came up to me and asked if I was French. I told him I wasn't.. He said, yes you are. You look like every French woman in Paris. I just laughed. Thanked him and we went on our way. A year later I had my DNA done. Haha Guess what? I am French. I am still laughing about that man telling me I am French. If only I could go to France. 😁

Bonjour Madame Marie-Anne!!! Useful advices to not to make a faux pas when non-European people visit Paris!!!
You made me remember to my obsession with Paris when I was 12 years old. I wanted desperately to go to Paris, but I had no money (I am Mexican, living in a periurban area)... and style. Supposing I actually went to Paris at that age, I would wear totally a cliché look: a beret, an "I love Paris" T-shirt, jeans and trainers, since I had NO sense of fashion. You know, teenage years, when we are trying to find our style.
Now, I am 23, what is a very young woman doing here??? I wanted to learn to dress chic, actually I've learnt a lot of French chic with you, Madame. And I found this video useful, I'll save it to apply your advices if someday I go to Paris. Merci beaucoup y muchos saludos from Mexico, Madame Marie-Anne!!! Keep doing what you do 💖

Years ago I was at the airport in Newcastle UK. I saw a group of middle aged and elderly people talking loudly, dressed in pastel athleisure outfits and white sneakers. As an American tourist, I was a bit embarrassed that they were stereotypes of US tourists. Until I drew closer -- they all had Scottish accents!

Thank you for these helpful trips for foreigners visiting Paris and the rest of Europe. I cringe when I think of what I wore in my youth in America and on vacations to other countries: very sexy, outrageous outfits that screamed for attention. Ha. Getting older for me means finally, finally, FINALLY seeing the light as to the loveliness of classic, refined outfits. As a tourist, I would change into chunky-heeled shoes instead of my usual 4-inch stiletto heels.

When I travel, I've swapped out my wedding + engagement rings with a simple stacked set of faceted bands. Don't want to lose the sentimental rings vs an easily replaced one for sure.
Don't own any high end designer pieces - would rather spend my $ on a vacation!

Thank you for this helpful video. I visited Paris for the first time as a middle schooler with my class. The teachers gave us horrid neon caps to wear so that they could identify us easily. Sure enough, locals could spot us a mile away. In fact, a couple French young men joked, “Give me your money.” We responded with, “Ha! Ha! You’re funny!” We then walked away.
Almost a decade later, I revisited Paris while studying abroad. I went with a Korean friend (I am of Korean descent as well). Even though I was wearing a cute sweater and velvet pant ensemble with loafers, Parisians could tell we were not locals. They assumed we were Japanese, so they always handed us Japanese menus, including at La Maison du Chocolat.
The last time I was in Paris was 2015. I noticed that even the locals, especially young people, are now wearing hoodies (e.g., Abercrombie and Fitch is now popular there), Converse, and even Crocs. I could tell who is a local by the way they talk rather than by the way the dress.
    Gros bisous! ❤️🇫🇷
