Learned a hard lesson I thought I'd share. Moved into a previously owned home back in October that had two heat pumps with four zones. So I decided to install four of these T5's for the two single stage heat pumps. Had no installation issues really, but once it got cold one end of the house that has the master bedroom was constantly feeling chilly. Without having previous experience with the house I wondered why only that part of the house was chilly. Fast forward to January and got the electric bill. I was shocked to see $470 bill! I immediately knew something was wrong so I set all the T-5's to 50 degrees and then set out to diagnose each T-5 one by one by setting each to 70 degrees to monitor what was happening. When I got to the T5 near the master bedroom I notice the compressor wasn't coming on, but the heat pump was attempting to blow air using the heat strips ($$$$$). So I pulled that T5 off the wall and discovered to my dismay that I had accidentally put the Y wire into the Y2 socket (facepalm). Y2 is only used for two stage compressors so my thinking is that zone never ended up running the compressor and instead used the heat strips all-the-time..! Ouch... Anyway, I set the Y wire into the Y socket. Tested the unit and now everything's running great. Don't know if this little foobar will help anyone, but who knows. You know the old saying. Check 16 times, cut once... ciao
Man that's a wild thing you figured out!! Thanks so much for sharing this - hopefully if anyone else is experiencing something similar this story will help them out too.
i was going to get the honeywell T5 but i read reviews of too many issues with it along with the nest. I guess theres no perfect thermostat so i ended going with the ecobee4 for a killer deal and within 30mins i was impressed with the features and customization
Thank you so much for taking a second to send that note! That is what keeps us making videos! Honestly if I can just help a few people, and make projects a bit easier than I feel like I’ve done my part. I really appreciate it, and I hope you can find some value / fun in our other videos as well!!
This was a great install video -- only thing I was missing was a precision screwdriver to release the old thermostat wires. Ran out to the store and got this done in 15 minutes. Thanks!
I literally have the exact same old thermostat, same amount and colors of wires as well. Batteries were in my old one is the only exception. My new T5 does not power on, tried multiple times.
Could you have a defective unit? Do you have a voltage tester to make sure you have power being delivered where you should? If all else fails, see about getting a local HVAC pro out to take a look. Thanks for the comment and please circle back if you come to a solution so we can keep other people informed that may potentially run into the same issue! Thanks!
I bought it from Amazon “used, like new” condition. Very possible the unit is just totally defective. I do have a voltage tester so I can try that. I guess I figured if the old one was plugged in with battery backup I should have power no problem.
Josh thats a great question! To my knowledge there is not a battery port, and the power off and on issue definitely sounds like your unit could be defective. Or you could have a loose power connection - definitely check connections before returning. Thanks for watching and good luck!!
So glad to have helped you out!! I really tried to cover all the steps, so I appreciate your feedback very much - Thanks for watching and again for sharing your thoughts!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I got this thermostat like year ago it works good but the screen display is been frozen for a while now and I can only work it from my phone with the App, I need to change the WiFi setting on it cause I change providers .. what can I do fo get the screen display to work?
Try pulling it off the wall, as in unplug the face unit and plug it back into the pin connector. Should reset it. Or flip the breaker off and on, should do the same trick. Good luck! 💪🏻
Love this video. Can I ask, what is the difference between the T5 and T6 pro wifi thermostats? I have a Lennox unit and my HVAC guy wants 200 bucks to install the T6. I installed an EcoBee at my old house and it was easy. The HVAC guy said there probably DIP to flip inside the burner unit to make this thermostat work. I have all the wires necessary and my old (very old) TH800 uses the same wiring scheme. What do you think and just doing it myself and forgetting the HVAC guy?
On the difference between the two I’m not sure to be honest. As far as the install goes, I think as long as you follow the instructions and don’t run into any snags you should be good. They way they built the instructions for this is very geared towards a DIY approach for sure. I always recommend getting with an HVAC pro once you hit a dead end somewhere. Thanks for reaching out and for checking out the video!

On my old thermostat a Robertshaw I had 4 wires installed at the time of removal. I see in your video here you mention briefly information on the C wire Adapter and the concern. Thanks for that I think I might have that problem. I had a blue wire but it was not hooked to any slot on my old thermostat. On this Honeywell T5 I purchased at Home Depot I installed the correct wires to the color code and I hooked the blue wire to the C slot. Installed the display faceplate turned on the power to the house and no display saying "Start Setup". Call Honeywell support and really didn't get in any help in why the display was not working to start the setup. I'm wondering if the blue wire is hooked up at my system or Option 2 do I need to use the C wire Adapter?
Danny, thanks for the feedback and for watching!! Best of luck on your install! I was lucky not to have to encounter any difficult obstacles with our install, but I did try to cover some of those scenarios, so I’m glad I was able to help in some way. 👍🏻
Danny McColgan Hey Danny, depending on your system you need to go to the furnace and make sure the blue wire is hooked up to the C (common) terminal. As always, make sure power is off to the unit first and this should fix your problem. As a side note, if you have air conditioning you may also have another wire hooked up to the common terminal so make sure that stays put when you add the blue wire to it!
Such and AWESOME tutorial!! Only one problem (not a "you-thing"). I don't have a C-wire. I tried to order one using the coupon but they're actually sold out on the Honewell site. Can you suggest a solution, please? Thanks so much!!!

Hello, Thanks for going throught the installation. I want to instal the same thermostat. I do have the C-wire but dont have the Y (Yellow) wire. Will the thermostat work with the furnace without the Y (Yellow) wire? Thanks again.
Thanks for the question!!! I’m actually not for sure if that would work with your specific system - definitely consult an HVAC expert on that one before attempting to wire it outside the instructions provided. Good luck and thanks again for watching!!! 💪🏻🙌🏻
You don’t have the Y Yellow because your system can only HEAT and don’t COOL. “Y” is the COOL mode. You still can install this connected thermostat, no worries. On this page, go to “check compatibility” and you will see witch models of the Honeywell brand your system is compatible with by indicating which are the wires you have. t9.honeywellhome.com
That’s a great question, I’ve not personally set it up that way but I have seen these thermostats used in multistory townhomes with multiple zones. I’m not sure if they all show up on a single app though, wish I could help more on that I’m just not sure.
I don't have a C wire. Is there a video that explains that part? I know you had one so you skipped it, but I'm worried I'll need to watch it so I know what I'm doing.
I’m sorry I’m not sure I can assist with that question. Go through the comments here though because there are a few people with more knowledge than me on the matter!! Last resort - contact a local HVAC service company to advise - to me that’s always the best bet!! Good luck and thanks for watching and for reaching out!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
On my old Honeywell my blue wire is in slot "B", would that be the same as slot "C" for this new Honeywell? Also I saw you had the jumper wire on your old Honeywell and I have it as well. I take it the new thermostat doesn't require it?
Scott, I honestly just went step by step and those instructions in the booklet were really solid. I may have been lucky with my setup of course, but I’d urge you to review the document really well to confirm what you’d need to do next. Sorry I’m not more help for you directly! Thanks for checking out our video as well!
Mine has no display stopped working last night with a cold weather, checked all fuses, furnace as well, reset everything, made sure all wires are wired fine, NOPE NADA! Any Ideas we are freezing I have 10 month old daughter need to get this fixed asap!
Sorry to hear!! I’m not sure if it has a reset function or not, but if you’ve disconnected from power and reconnected then that should soft reset at least. Make sure that the thermostat isn’t connected to either a GFCI circuit that is tripped, OR to a circuit that has a tripped breaker. You’d be surprised how some things are wired - check all breakers and GFCIs in the house. Last- call a local HVAC expert out to the house to assess. Good luck!!!
Micah, my assumption here is that if your HVAC system is setup already to have multiple zones, then you could install 2 of these thermostats and control them independently of each other. The zoning is setup during the rough install of the HVAC system with the thermostats acting as your controllers. I’m not certified in HVAC install by any means, that’s my understanding of how it works and I assume you’d be ok. Might be best to reach out direct to Honeywell or a local HVAC expert in your area for a direct answer. Thanks for watching and for reaching out!! 💪🏻👍🏻
Geofencing means that it sets a virtual perimeter around a location of your choosing, and when the GPS of your mobile device is detected in that 'perimeter' or fence, some automated action will take place. i.e. When you arrive home, your AC will set to a certain degree temp. Yes, definitely set it up via the Honeywell app at the very least, and we use ours with Google Home.
I don't unfortunately - but I can say, we still use this T5+ today and it's still awesome! We've got it hooked up with our google home devices too, and it's awesome.
Definitely must be some crossed lines I'd assume if it's engaging the furnace w/ the AC setting on - if you have an HVAC pro in your area you can call I'd go that route. Good Luck!
Before you start changing wiring, reset your thermostat. The default setting for thermostat configuration is Gas. On this setting for me it was blowing hot air. Go back to thermostat configurations and switch it to Heat pump. This solved my ‘hot air blowing out on a cool setting’ problem.
I think the adaptor comes with any model you buy - but I’m not for sure on that. Definitely consult with a local HVAC expert / contractor if you are unsure before wiring up anything. Good luck and thanks for reaching out! 💪🏻
Hey man thanks for the video! It was great! I am moving into a house that is going to have 2 thermostats, does the app allow you to set up 2 so you can control separately? Also does it have a cool/heat program feature like the nest does? Let me know when you can, thanks again!
I don’t think it can operate only via battery, that’s a good question. As far as the c wire I believe there are options to install with or without if I’m not mistaken. When in doubt, definitely consult with a local HVAC pro in your area, and good luck on the setup!! Thank you for watching and for reaching out!! 🙏🏻💪🏻
Jack B I did not use the adaptor, and this video is made to document my process. I am not an HVAC professional, just documented my installation to try and help as many people as I could. Thanks!
I believe it can function without WiFi yes, it’s the ability to program remotely from your phone that you’d be waiting on. It’s a thermostat at a basic level of course (I can’t verify this, just guessing) good luck
Bottom was course thread drywall screws, and the top was one of the smaller metal screws. There’s also wood paneling on top of the drywall. I think I’ll be good with the 1oz total weight (or less) of the thermostat against those three screws, unless of course I need to use it to hold myself up during a violent fall.
I unfortunately can't speak directly to that - not an expert on these installs directly, was more documenting my process. Thanks for reaching out though!
Unfortunately all I can recommend is to follow the instructions exactly and if that leaves you hanging try to find a local HVAC pro in hour area to come take a look for you. Wish I could be more help more!
if you have an orange cable for: "O" where is that go??, I have a C wire and a "O" orange wire...where does the "O" wire goes...Your pane does not have orange...do you know?
Thanks for reaching out!! I'm not sure how to 'hard reset' this in particular unit but grabbed this link for you here -- www.honeywellhome.com/us/en/support/how-do-i-reset-my-honeywell-home-device/
Not exactly sure, could be a whole bunch of reasons. Start with making sure connections are correct, one by one. Then check your breaker panel to make sure nothing is tripped. After that, you would need to consult with a local HVAC pro in your area to play it safe.
Great question!! I didn’t know myself so I looked online and found this article - I hope it helps out!! Thanks for watching!!!! homeautotechs.com/honeywell-lyric-t5-vs-t5/
Not sure on that - Have you tried disconnecting from power and reconnecting? Also, resetting the software completely and starting over? Those would be my first two ideas. Good luck!
I unfortunately do not have any for sale right now, but check back in / follow on social media as well - I am planning on doing some more hats and shirts soon! Thanks for asking!! 🙏🏻
Did you check your breaker box? Or I guess it’s possible that somehow the power is jumped off a GFCI somewhere. I definitely recommend reaching out to an HVAC pro in your area if you have any issues at all. Thanks for checking out the video!
Whoops! Plugged the wires after screwing it in so now you have a rat's nest sticking out through the hole, you're also supposed to depress those tabs while you insert the wires. You didn't level it, your bit definitely over-rotated and stripped the drywall cause it's too powerful for that and you didn't use anchors. To others installing this, I would consult the manual if you don't want to take all the shortcuts.
Lucky for me it works and looks awesome. Isn’t Unlevel or operating poorly or any issues at all. I also don’t have drywall wall... said that in the video. House is 1934 Shiplap construction. I am not and did not claim to be an HVAC expert, it’s a DIY channel. Thanks for watching though and have a good evening!!
@@TheToughGuysTV Nothing against you! Just suggesting others read the instructions. Sometimes people hop on a channel and follow step by step, damaging something or doing it improperly. Just letting people know! Cheers.
Totally agree with you, I always advocate people consult instructions and professionals if needed. Thanks for watching and I hope you find the help you need!! 💪🏻🛠🙏🏻
do i need to cut off the heating amd cooling system to instal it?
Definitely a good idea to shut off the breakers yes, that’s what we did. Thanks!
When I reset the system to connect it ask me to download app which I already did but on the iso store it said not provide by local region
If I have a Honeywell T4 thermostat, can I just swap the fronts and keep the same base plate?
My setup doesn’t have the blue wire for the C it only has the 4 wire setup and my screen will not power up any tips on how to fix this
Hello, Thanks for going throught the installation.
Can you use two of these thermostats on a two zone system With one app?
That’s a great question, I’ve not personally set it up that way but I have seen these thermostats used in multistory townhomes with multiple zones. I’m not sure if they all show up on a single app though, wish I could help more on that I’m just not sure.
I don't have a C wire. Is there a video that explains that part? I know you had one so you skipped it, but I'm worried I'll need to watch it so I know what I'm doing.
Contact honeywell and they will send you a adapter
In my old thermostat the white wire is connected in the letter B in this case in the honeywell t5 in which letter would it go
I have a jumper between w and y wire on my old thermostat, how can i apply this to a t5 smart thermo? The wire is yellow by the way.
I’m sorry I’m not sure I can assist with that question. Go through the comments here though because there are a few people with more knowledge than me on the matter!! Last resort - contact a local HVAC service company to advise - to me that’s always the best bet!! Good luck and thanks for watching and for reaching out!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Mine had a jumper, and in the instructions it has a section on it
So what’s that other long adapter that goes with it ? I saw someone else connect it into the furnace heater in other room..why ?
If it’s connected to a second heater I’m not sure.
Can you have multiple thermostats on the app or just one ?
That’s a good question! I do not know the answer unfortunately, we only ever had the 1 connected.
Good job
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video
Thank you for posting your experience here to help others out!! That’s so awesome! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I noticed you didn't use the drywall anchors, so guess really not necessary just for a thermostat?
Yeah to me it’s overkill for something so small, but depends on the situation.
I only have a red white and green wire in an rv thermostat. Will this work?
I have to defer to the instructions included. If it doesn’t detail your exact situation I’d suggest getting with a HVAC pro in your area
@@TheToughGuysTV Thanks Sir, Yep I just called my local HVAC tech to come check it out he will be here in a few hours, hope fully nothing to serious!
Good luck and circle back with what happens so it may help other people out!!
Very detailed and informative !
Thank you so much Sandra!!! Truly appreciate you! 🙏🏻
Bro that's crazy i got the same EXACT old and new thermostats lol
Hahaha that's awesome! Hopefully the T5 works out for you!
Does the C adapter come with the unit?
My package did include the C Adaptor yes. Thanks!
Does the Honeywell T5 work if you have two zones, and plan on placing a T5 in each zone?
Micah, my assumption here is that if your HVAC system is setup already to have multiple zones, then you could install 2 of these thermostats and control them independently of each other. The zoning is setup during the rough install of the HVAC system with the thermostats acting as your controllers. I’m not certified in HVAC install by any means, that’s my understanding of how it works and I assume you’d be ok. Might be best to reach out direct to Honeywell or a local HVAC expert in your area for a direct answer. Thanks for watching and for reaching out!! 💪🏻👍🏻
I still don’t understand geofencing, should I connect it on the app?
Geofencing means that it sets a virtual perimeter around a location of your choosing, and when the GPS of your mobile device is detected in that 'perimeter' or fence, some automated action will take place. i.e. When you arrive home, your AC will set to a certain degree temp. Yes, definitely set it up via the Honeywell app at the very least, and we use ours with Google Home.
Do you have a comparison between the T9 and this thermostat?
I don't unfortunately - but I can say, we still use this T5+ today and it's still awesome! We've got it hooked up with our google home devices too, and it's awesome.
Hi, when i turn on the ac heat comes out from the vents not cold air, any ideas what setting to change?
Definitely must be some crossed lines I'd assume if it's engaging the furnace w/ the AC setting on - if you have an HVAC pro in your area you can call I'd go that route. Good Luck!
check wires on back of thermostat: R -red Y-yellow W-White G-Green C-Blue
Before you start changing wiring, reset your thermostat. The default setting for thermostat configuration is Gas. On this setting for me it was blowing hot air. Go back to thermostat configurations and switch it to Heat pump. This solved my ‘hot air blowing out on a cool setting’ problem.
Thanks, well explained.
You’re welcome! Thank you!
I have the same thermostat but my furnace older and it has just 2 wires I understand there is a C wire adapter. How do I know which one to buy ?
I think the adaptor comes with any model you buy - but I’m not for sure on that. Definitely consult with a local HVAC expert / contractor if you are unsure before wiring up anything. Good luck and thanks for reaching out! 💪🏻
Thanks for the upload! I had no idea what I was doing
Manuel, thank you for watching!! So happy to hear that I was able to help you out, that’s what makes us keep making videos - so great to hear!!! 👍🏻💪🏻😁
Hey man thanks for the video! It was great! I am moving into a house that is going to have 2 thermostats, does the app allow you to set up 2 so you can control separately? Also does it have a cool/heat program feature like the nest does? Let me know when you can, thanks again!
Does that thermostat need a C wire or it can operate on battery ?
I don’t think it can operate only via battery, that’s a good question. As far as the c wire I believe there are options to install with or without if I’m not mistaken. When in doubt, definitely consult with a local HVAC pro in your area, and good luck on the setup!! Thank you for watching and for reaching out!! 🙏🏻💪🏻
Do you need a c wire?
Lol I like that you call your wifi skynet I see you understand the times we live in aka they are trying to push "you will own nothing and be happy"
I figure this way once the machine overlords take over, they will catch the reference and spare me for my comedy. 🚀
Perfect!
jmset33 thank you!! 🙌🏻
Can more than one person connect and operate this?
My wife and I both control it with our Google Home apps. Thanks for checking out the video!
What if I only have a 2 wire? Red and White… Help Appreciated
Pretty good video
I need help, I had a blue wire, red wire, green wire, and white wire.
My t5 thermostat keeps going to savings event...anyone know how to perminatley bypass that?
How can i set it as app on my phone please
Download from the App Store the Honeywell app
Good but incomplete. Why didn't you explain the C adapter setup?
Jack B I did not use the adaptor, and this video is made to document my process. I am not an HVAC professional, just documented my installation to try and help as many people as I could. Thanks!
Will this work on 5gh WiFi?
Is the display blue? mine is more white?
In person the display has white letters/numbers but in the video it picks up differently. Thanks for checking out our video!!
Can it be used without Wi-Fi we bought a house we don't have Wi-Fi yet?
I believe it can function without WiFi yes, it’s the ability to program remotely from your phone that you’d be waiting on. It’s a thermostat at a basic level of course (I can’t verify this, just guessing) good luck
Mounting plate screws drilled straight into drywall........no anchors?............nice,lol.
He isn’t going to hang clothes on the damn thing...get a life troll!
Does this unit work when you only have W1 and Rh?
I unfortunately can't speak directly to that - not an expert on these installs directly, was more documenting my process. Thanks for reaching out though!
The answer is yes. It is set up in the installer menu. HVAC pro here.
@@tylerfabish5578 Thanks, I just finished installing mine and it works like a charm.
Does it have battery backup
It does not as least my model did not
does this thermostat come with smart sensors or is it compatible?
Not sure on the smart sensors unfortunately - do you mean additional sensors?
@@TheToughGuysTV i mean is it compatible with smart sensors like the T9 has (allowing you to set certain rooms at its own temperature)
Not a feature set we take advantage of, but definitely sounds awesome if so!
@@TheToughGuysTV thank you sir!
I got orange black and brown left what do I do ?
Unfortunately all I can recommend is to follow the instructions exactly and if that leaves you hanging try to find a local HVAC pro in hour area to come take a look for you. Wish I could be more help more!
if you have an orange cable for: "O" where is that go??, I have a C wire and a "O" orange wire...where does the "O" wire goes...Your pane does not have orange...do you know?
Unfortunately I’m not sure on that, wish I could be of more help to you!
The ones I did today it is O/B. I had to look that one up.
What do I do if my t5 thermostat doesn’t display the setup
Thanks for reaching out!! I'm not sure how to 'hard reset' this in particular unit but grabbed this link for you here -- www.honeywellhome.com/us/en/support/how-do-i-reset-my-honeywell-home-device/
This thermostat works with WIFI even without C wire?
I can't comment on the 'without C wire' part, but it's Wifi for sure. Works within Google Home's app once it's setup as well.
Thank you
i just got mine using the same wire setup screen wont power up
Bummer to hear - Hopefully you've got a warranty to get it swapped out. Ours is still going strong! Thanks for watching!
Is this available at the Philippines??
I am not sure about that - my apologies. I am not affiliated with Honeywell.
How come my T5 won’t turn on after installing???
Not exactly sure, could be a whole bunch of reasons. Start with making sure connections are correct, one by one. Then check your breaker panel to make sure nothing is tripped. After that, you would need to consult with a local HVAC pro in your area to play it safe.
Anyone know the differences between the t5+ and the t5?
Great question!! I didn’t know myself so I looked online and found this article - I hope it helps out!! Thanks for watching!!!!
homeautotechs.com/honeywell-lyric-t5-vs-t5/
Maybe they are phasing out the reg T5 version??
Mine is on airplane mode like it told me and then it says no Internet connection so the app can't find the device
Not sure on that - Have you tried disconnecting from power and reconnecting? Also, resetting the software completely and starting over? Those would be my first two ideas. Good luck!
@@TheToughGuysTV Yeah I tried that.
It finally decided to start working lol, Thank-you
Well that’s good at least!!! Glad it’s working now!
@@TheToughGuysTV Thank-you 😀
Wired as directed still no power...wtg?
Check breaker would be my first idea - past that consult with an HVAC pro in your area to be safe.
Make sure you didn’t blow a fuse at your indoor unit. If you did, go to Autozone, and purchase the fuse you need.
Great
How do I purchase a shirt for my husband?
I unfortunately do not have any for sale right now, but check back in / follow on social media as well - I am planning on doing some more hats and shirts soon! Thanks for asking!! 🙏🏻
all my wires are there and in right place and no power to thermostat
Did you check your breaker box? Or I guess it’s possible that somehow the power is jumped off a GFCI somewhere. I definitely recommend reaching out to an HVAC pro in your area if you have any issues at all. Thanks for checking out the video!
C wire?
HVAC tech here, is there a common wire going to the c terminal? (Most likely a blue wire)
Thanks for chiming in!! Please help a few in the comments if you don’t mind! 🙏🏻🙏🏻
HEAT PUMP COMES ON WHEN I TRY TO COOL
Definitely get with a local HVAC pro in your area and have them inspect the wiring and help with the install. Good Luck!
Blue c wire means common
Thanks for the note!
A ton of people reached out and a few really helpful people in the comments have helped a great deal. I’m a GC for a living, but a jack of all trades you know, so trying to document my projects to hopefully add value where I can. Thanks!
@@iDislike I agree with you. It is very irresponsible for people to post these instruction videos when they don't know how to do the job properly. What makes it worse is when they place ads on their videos for improper advice.
SKYNET noooooooo Hahaha 😂😂
Hahaha... best part is I now have an extender too... called it T-800 - Thanks for checking out the video!
