Shasta Airflyte review from Family Wheels (as towed by a Volvo XC70)

  • It might look old school but the Shasta Airflyte is actually an anniversary edition reboot of the old 1961 Airflyte... with some modern conveniences thrown in for good measure. We look at how well it tows with our Volvo, some of its shortcomings, as well as some of the geeky little details we love. (Lots more details on how the Volvo XC70 does as a towing vehicle by following this link: familywheels.ca/2016/05/shasta...)

    How cool! Enjoy! Love the Shasta Trailers! We love our Quick Silver Livin Lite Pop-up for super easy towing. Your son will have great memories of your trips/time together!

    Do you have brakes on the trailer?

    You mentioned the dry weight. What is the max GVWR? I can’t seem to find this anywhere on the internet

    I hope you're getting the recall notices for this particular trailer.

      Hi Doug. Yes, it came with the recalls already dealt with. But that's a good point, if you're looking to buy an Airflyte, make sure the axle and rear window recalls have been addressed.

      Good deal. Anything special needed to make the bedrail work on the gaucho? Due to the bathroom door design "quirk," my son has fallen off while asleep more than once.

    I'd love to know how the Volvo does towing. Just picked up the 2012 XC70 3.2 with the Volvo factory hitch. Can you make another video from the Volvo's perspective? Thanks!

      +ScoobyFermentation Thanks for watching... I've just posted way more info for you about towing with the XC70 on our website. Here's a link: familywheels.ca/2016/05/shasta-airflyte-travel-trailer-review/

    Thank you for creating this video. I have a 2016 Volvo XC70 T5, and I was seeking proof that this station wagon can be a viable tow vehicle. I am looking at used Casitas (fiberglass camper). Are you still digging your Shasta? Have you sold it? Do you want to? Let me know!

    I'd love to hear more about the battery upgrade. Can you share any details?

    • @FamilyWheels
      @FamilyWheels  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You bet... we have two six volts tied to each other to create one huge twelve volt. Here's an article that does a good job of explaining it. www.atbatt.com/rv-battery/how-to-wire-6v-batteries-in-series-or-parallel-configuration

      Thanks Paul! What kind of 6v batteries did you use? I've seen a lot about golf cart batteries for RVs. Also, how did you handle the battery case(s) and venting with two in there?

    • @FamilyWheels
      @FamilyWheels  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used Canada proof batteries which are made specifically for RVs. You can buy a double-wide box and I used the pre-existing venting.

    Please please please get a length of wood dowling and get rid of the hideous white plastic railing you have installed as a curtain track. The wood finish on the interior is ruined by the stark white pole which stands out like dogs balls. The dowling would be cheap and blend in with the rest of the van. Aesthetics are important. Not everything related to child hacks has to be plastic . All the lovely retro features and then ... that eyesore ! Also ... storing the spare under the table unsecured is not a good idea ... if/when you brake suddenly that becomes a 20lb projectile sliding on its plastic shroud into the far side of the trailer ... potentially causing a lot of damage. Plus it looks ugly and takes up room ... Stick it in your SUV boot for God's sake until you get a solution welded on to the back of the Shasta.
    One other gripe ... you filmed yourself with the interior light flaring behind you messing with the contrast for a lot of the length of the vid ... if you post regularly please make more of an effort with your camera work ... this was next level amateurish.
