    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    When La Boeuf (Matt Damon) suggests that he join in on the hunt for Tom Chaney, Mattie (Hailee Steinfeld) resists the overture with her signature wit.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    Fourteen-year-old Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) joins an aging U.S. marshal (Jeff Bridges) and another lawman (Matt Damon) in tracking her father's killer into hostile Indian territory in Joel and Ethan Coen's adaptation of Charles Portis' original novel. Sticking more closely to the source material than the 1969 feature adaptation starring Western icon John Wayne, the Coens' True Grit tells the story from the young girl's perspective, and re-teams the celebrated filmmaking duo with their No Country for Old Men producing partner Scott Rudin. Josh Brolin and Barry Pepper co-star.
    CREDITS:
    TM & © Paramount (2010)
    Cast: Matt Damon, Hailee Steinfeld
    Directors: Ethan Coen, Joel Coen
    Producers: Ethan Coen, Joel Coen, David Ellison, Megan Ellison, Robert Graf, Scott Rudin, Paul Schwake, Steven Spielberg

    • @samsonguy10k
      @samsonguy10k 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Especially when we see the lie he made when we actually do see Chaney later. "THIS is the guy that LaBoeuf couldn't catch?" If I had a character Chaney's speed in Crusader Kings 3, the game wouldn't even let me start, much less end it within the first ten seconds.
      "After hours of labor, the future Duke Chaney's mother decided to end it all and jumped out the window of the tower that was to be Chaney's beginning. End of Game."
      You can really see Mattie's intelligence at play with the people she chooses to interact with vs those she is forced to or those who impose themselves on her. Cogburn was the smartest and the one she wanted to help find Chaney, and he didn't impose on her one bit.

    One of the great movies that has grown more sweet with age. The final scene where an old, one armed Mattie says, “time just gets by us,” as “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms,” is playing in the background, is more haunting today than it was then considering that 11 years have gone by and I’m now an old man.

      @@billeddy4357 It should be noted that the person of True Grit being spoken of was not only Rooster Cogburn, but Mattie as well. She was reckless as a kid can be, but she was seeking to bring Chaney to a court of law, not outright kill him out of revenge.
      It also sadly showed how LaBouef needed some primers on what it means to be a person of true grit. Just being a Texas Ranger does not fill that quota.

      I remember a bit in Ken Burns’ documentary on prohibition, there was a part talking about the first things women were championing when the got the right to vote, and one of them was raising the age of consent to 14. I had to rewind to be sure I heard that correctly. That blew my goddamn mind.

    In the 1969 version, the "sneak a kiss" line was not creepy like it was here. Kim Darby was 21 during filming and looked close to that age. Steinfeld however was 13 looked so and her character was 14 too, so it was definitely creepy. That said, this was the 1880s when girls were about 14, they started getting married off, so while we get creeped out, it was normal back then.

    As Mattie I'd be perplexed and more than a little annoyed that big talking La Beouf was eluded by a 'slow wit' that had plenty of chances to catch Cheney before her father took him on as a hired hand. Had La Beouf been more competent the entire tragedy could have been avoided which she instantly latches onto and gives La Beouf both barrels in the verbal assault that follows. Mattie is no fool and doesn't suffer them either.
