Best defender I've seen. He really had it all: speed, strength, stamina, aerial prowess/heading, concentration, intelligence, class, timing, flawless tackling, positioning, anticipation, marking, reading of the game, tactical sense, versatility, two-footedness, technique, distribution, elegance, leadership, consistency, precociousness, longevity, mentality, and organisational skills. Won it all at club level and came so close with Italy, with great performances, only missing out on a title due to bad luck. The only thing he possibly lacked was the prolific goalscoring of other defenders (but for me this is a bonus, not the most important aspect of being a defender, as they should be able to defend first and foremost), but he was so complete regardless and still scored a decent amount of goals. But he was world class in any defensive position, and he was a top defender from his teenage years up until his 40s.

Extremely athletic, intelligent, good passing/dribbling skills, good pace/temperament, played all defense positions including the midfield during Milan's injury crisis/bad year period... he just had it all. Fascinating, fascinating player. And for those putting Maldini as a center back in their hypothetical XI... they have clearly never bothered to watch him actually play and just go for the popular brazilian pick. Although brilliant at center back, he was much more devastating as a left back as he could consistently shut down his flank for the entire game and was less prone to mistakes.

    Let me correct your markings.
    - 10/10 in Marking and Tackling is obvious, giving that we are talking about the probably best defender of all times. Maybe only Baresi and Backenbauer are on par with him in pure defensive abilities.
    - 8/10 in Physicality is justifiable, since he was strong yet not the strongest and he was quick yet not the quickest. He reached top level in both strenght and speed, but lacked exceptionality in both.
    - 8/10 in Technical Ability is justifiable only if we are considering all roles of the game. Because if we look only among defenders Maldini is easily 9/10 regarding game vision, ball control and ball passing, with very few defenders being more technical than him. Only comparing them to midfielders and forwards his skills become 8/10. For the sake of comparing him with icons playing in other roles, I will accept this.
    - 8/10 in Mentality is wrong. You don't play for almost 30 years at top level, captaining one of the biggest club and national teams of the world for decades, figuring as starter in 10 massive international finals among Champions, World Cup and Euros, becoming an absolute legend of the game without a 10/10 mentality. What else do you want from a guy able to handle the biggest stages as pure routine? I'm trying to find a reason to give him only a 9/10, but no one comes to my mind. Correction: 10/10 in Mentality.
    - 7/10 in Consistency is by far the worst error in your rating. The guy simply stayed to much at peak football, performing at top level and winning so much to get fewer than a 9/10 in consistency. His perfomance level almost never dropped and this is not just a matter of longevity. Maldini was always there when a top performance was needed. He show excellence both as centerback and wingback. He was great in defending, but also in creating game and attacking. Sure, he lost 3 UCL finals and two major international finals, but he was by no means the cause of it. And the not leaving Italy is a stupid argument, since Serie A was the best league in the world for the most of his career. Sure, in an extraordinary 30-year career there would be some mistakes preventing a 10/10 mark, even thought I doubt anyone can think of someone topping Maldini in terms of consistency. But I will be satisfied by adding 2 points. Correction: 9/10 in Consistency.
    - 7/10 in Flair is justifiable again is we consider all roles of the game. Because if we look only at defenders, he is easily a 9/10.
    - 9/10 in Throphy Cabinet is justifiable. It is true that 7 League Titles and 5 Champions League are a record impossible to overcome, but the guy himself regrets having not won with the national team. So detracting a point is right.
    - 10/10 in Longevity is obviously right and no words are needed.
    - 9/10 in Icon Factor is justifiable only if we consider guys like Pelè, Maradona, Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi, Ronaldo il Fenomeno, etc. But he is an undeniable legend of the game and, as far as defenders are concerned, THE LEGEND of the game (so it would be a 10/10).
In conclusion, my overall score for Paolo is 90/100, rightfully increasing his marks in Mentality and Consistency. And I think I have lowballed it, other people would have easily gave him a 92.
Imaging to consider only pure defenders I gave him a 94 and someone more generous might give a 96.
    Absolute Legend.

This is a player that deserves 10/10 on almost every aspect. How the fuck is Maldini 7 in consistency? He was a monster right from the beginning right until the very end. I don't there was anyone else except Maldini or maybe Zizou who was so universally looked up to and respected that they could hold an absolute hot head like Gattuso by collar and demand him to just shut the fuck up and play. Maldini did that to him while I fully believe Zizou could too, had they played together.

    • @njfernandes87

if u give him a 10 as icon, u need to give CR7 a 20. im exagerating, but theres a scale that needs to be respected. As one of the most appreciated defenseman of all time, 9/10 seems fair. the consistency and mentality scores on the other hand...

    • @alansmith3733
      @alansmith3733 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@njfernandes87 you’re probably right but I grew up in the 90s and he was basically the face of Italian football and AC Milan. He was so loyal to AC as well playing across two eras. He basically was the personification their overall football style, sophistication, toughness and spirit. He is so recognisable with his stand out good looks, cool style and physique. He’s not far behind CR7 imho.
Sadly the greatest icon could be David beckham.
I actually can’t think of any outfield player that is remotely close to Maldini on consistency.

maldini Is one of the few players in all of sports, who could have been enjoyed by a father and son(or mother and daughter) at winning at the highest level. A lot of people have beckenbauer as their best defender of all time, but for me it easily is Maldini. vidic and van dijk are close, but maldini is number 1 for me

I feel bad for his international career he came so close to win a trophy and not just once but many time in 1990 WC he came so close to win the WC in his home soil but got knocked out by Defending Champions 🇦🇷 Argentina on penalties in 1994 he finished second losing to eventual winners 🇧🇷 Brazil again on penalties in 2000 euros he was just seconds away from winning the euros but 🇫🇷 France has equalise and eventually won the match in 2002 he got knocked out by 🇰🇷 South Korea and got frustated and decided not to participate in 2006 WC if he would have participated in that WC he finally would have won a trophy for his country as 🇮🇹 Italy won the 2006 WC
he must be feeling very bad
