Still loving Mark and Lard. I worked eleven hours a day in a factory in Luton. We were forced to listen to Radio 1. Between Zoe Ball, Simon Mayo and Jo Wily and all the other dross, there was a beacon of hope. Cheers, lads. x
When they used to do their late night 'Graveyard Slot' show, in the early 1990's, my brother and I were driving back home from London. We were enjoying the show, but had to pull in to a layby, as their old mate, the poet Ian McMillan had been reading out a list of spurious local newspaper headlines, eg., 'Small child impaled by ice cream cone dropped from hot air balloon'. We were both laughing so much, especially my brother, who was driving, that it wasn't safe. You just don't get properly dangerous radio any more. Marc Riley, the artist formerly known as Lard, has a superb show on BBC Radio 6 Music. Well worth a listen. Cod, fish, battered balls, as they'd say. I doubt that Lard's classic 'Shit Agent' would be allowed to be broadcast uncut, nowadays. Or 'Fat Harry White' even mentioned. The constant references to faeces in 'Lard's Animal Sanctuary' either. 😆😆😲😆😆
I will never forget the night when this was first broadcast. Laugh? I nearly shat. Especially when asked if he was playing anywhere, Lard, as To', replied that they were doing a night somewhere that only held 100 people. "Better get there early" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I loved Mark and Lard for years in their 10 - 12 slot on Radio 1. I have loads on tape and when i retire in 20 odd years time i will put them all on youtube although by then i imagine that will be completely illegal.
Time for a reunion, methinks. No disrespect to Stuart Maconie, Liza Tarbuck or Sally Lindsay, who are all good co-presenters, Marc Riley was, is, and always will be Radcliffe`s natural radio partner. Sadly, I don`t think that will ever happen now that Riley is a successful presenter in his own right.
Agreed. Radio 1 doesn`t have any maverick presenters pushing the boundaries anymore. I only listen when Moyles is on these days, but even he`s not as daring as he used to be. It`s all too safe now. I`d also add Fearne Cotton, Annie Mac, Zane Lowe & Greg James to your list of the unlistenable. Hooray for Mark & Lard and their disdain for the playlist.
He was simple, but could hit the drums hard and it worked for the songs on Definitely Maybe. But as Noel started writing more complex stuff, McCarroll couldn't keep up, and according to Noel didn't try to improve. Anyway, a good lampooning of his drums by BBC Radio here!
Calm down! I was only expressing my personal opinion. If we all liked the same things, it would be a very dull world. If you don`t like Moyles, fairplay to you.

@@briggsl Nice one! Just don't die on us haha.
It was the Tony McCarroll Drum & Bass Clinic skit that had me in tears back in the day. This is pretty good though.
I've been looking for the drum and bass bit for years. If you ever find it please can you share it.

Me too, mate. Says it all that I am still listening to this in 2023!

@Antelope6
Remember it well - "This album is not available in shops. Because it's f**king s**t."
my brother did me a cd with some of their clips on... they were the funniest duo ever!
Lol @ Steve Packamac. I forgot about that one.
Mate you are so right it is uncanny
Any one finds it post it and let me know. Used to love the late night show.
I`ve tried hunting that one down myself, no luck so far. I think the voiceover was done by Fat Harry White. Had me in stitches!
And what about Billy Bollockchops and Somerset Cider House?
This has to be one of the funniest items to appear on radio ever. Full stop.
One of the funniest nights ever
