      That is AMAZING!!! Thank you for sharing that with us! It's so nice to hear these things because it makes me a bigger fan of the person; in this case Tony McCarroll and he's gone up many, many notches in my book. Speaking of books, now I am definitely (not maybe) going to order his autobiography! Cheers!

    Noel said in an interview recently (and no doubt on other occasions) how Definitely Maybe was the best, most complete Oasis Album. Tony by extension is no small part of why. I love Alan Whites drumming, but his later ghost snare & kick embellishments etc when covering the groups earlier tunes always grated with me. Those that know know, and Tony will forever be tied to the best era of that band. Wish him all the best, he inspired more drummers than he'll ever know.

    • @markd7013
      @markd7013 2 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      i'd agree with that. there is nothing Whitey did post Tony that was particularly hard to play...maybe a bit more intricate, but not unattainable. And actually, Whiteys style was perhaps a little samey after a while. eg lots of that beat loosely based on the baggy sound. Ringo was never the best technical drummer...but its what he came up with that counts, the originality. i get that Tony's stuff was relatively basic, but this is what fitted the songs the best. Nobody wants extravagant fills and rolls in songs anyway (except maybe other drummers 🙂 )

      So glad to see I’m not the only one who felt that way about Whitey. I loved him in the Morning Glory era but grew to despise his drumming by the end. Very samey to the point that you knew what the fills would be before you heard them. I’m probably one of the very few people out there that were actually relieved when he got sacked.

      @robertocaba5915 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Tony’s drumming was awesome in DM, even if feels sloppier than White’s, which I find rather boring tbh. Minimalistic but with a punkish edge sadly lost afterwards. And lots of iconic drum riffs on that debut. It wouldn’t be the same without Tony’s drum sound, that’s for sure. A great lad too

    From what I can gather, Tony McCarroll is a smashing bloke.
    What I know is that he was a smashing drummer, totemic to the rhythm section on an album and two singles that framed a wonderful time. It was so pure and exciting. It sounded amazing.
    What I also know is that he was subject to manipulation and bastardry at the whim of another human, and he was harmed, and his trajectory in life was taken from his control. It’s a credit to his strength and integrity that he is as affable and kind as he is.
    Fair play Tony. Thank you for enriching us - we remember it yeah. Cheers.

      I think it was the right choice, tbh. Exact same thing happened with Nirvana. And the Beatles. The drummer is the backbone of the band. The heartbeat. If you feel like youre not gelling then changes have to be made. Alan White was an incredible drummer, Oasis took off when he came in. Became the biggest band on Earth. That shows it was the right choice to make

      I was 22 in 1994 and not into the grunge scene here in America with the "woe is me" attitude. I couldn't identify with that mindset. We were newly adults and didn't have to deal with the perceived hardships of our youth anymore. It didn't make sense to wallow in it. We wanted to have a good time. Oasis capitalized on that feeling with the rave/acid house late 80s-early 90s vibe and turned it into guitar rock. Something that the Charlatans did a few years before.

      The way I heard it, Noel & Tony grated on one another occasionally & Noel was the Guvnor, so that was that. I wonder if Tony found Noel & Owen aggressive in the studio & doing tracks again & again, alone, without the band to bounce off just didn’t suit his personality? It wouldn’t be that surprising. Tony was the drummer that inspired me to join a band and learn to play the drums after repeatedly listening to Definitely Maybe. I remember speaking to Nigel Clark (Dodgy) in 2017 after we’d opened for them at a gig; he was incredibly friendly and asked me who some of my favourite drummers were and I mentioned Tony as probably the main influence for me. He brought up the gig mentioned where oasis supported Dodgy and said he always thought Tony was a good drummer and respected that Tony was the drummer I picked as one of my favourite. Terrific video!

      Chris Sharrock stayed largely faithful to the album versions though, the only Oasis drummer post-Tony to do so. While that swingy-quarter note pulse thing became the Oasis "feel" from Morning Glory on, I'm surprised Chris was the only one to inject the straight 8ths feel back into the DM songs, live. Then again, if what Liam said is true for all the replacements, they wanted them to do what they do and don't feel you need to copy your predecessor(s).

    I don’t believe his firing was ultimately really about his drumming. From reading his book, it sounds like Tony wasn’t scared of Noel and Noel’s ego couldn’t handle that fact. With Alan McGee‘s support and lavish praise Noel was trying to transform himself and ascend to this godlike rock genius/leader of the band. During this period Tony still wanted to treat him like an equal but Noel couldn’t deal with it. I got the feeling that it’s almost like Noel couldn’t take himself seriously as the uber rockstar with someone from his youth there treating him like just a friend on the dole they were in a band with. It seems he had to have his ass kissed and be unchallenged in order to take himself seriously…and Tony wasn’t willing to do that.
    Guigsy and Bonehead were still willing to at that point so they stayed…for awhile. Liam wasn’t prepared to kiss ass either but he could sort of get away with it because he was the singer and Noel’s brother…for awhile. I have total respect for Noel’s songwriting genius and he’s probably an awesome guy to have a few pints of Guinness with. However, I think being in a band with him was a different story, at least back then. It really does seem that the rise of his ego, which again I feel like he needed in order to take himself seriously as a superstar rock God, got out of control and eventually drove everyone from that original band away from him. Like so many other rockstars before him he’s therefore ended up with hired hands and yes men vs true bandmates and the music has suffered. It almost seems like a bit of a Napoleonic complex to be honest, coupled with an inherent chip on his shoulder from growing up poor, but I’ll stop the armchair psychoanalysis there. Anyway, Tony is indeed a great drummer and should hold his head very high.

    • @giorgiocurcetti4001
      @giorgiocurcetti4001 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No no, very good points there, mate. Napoleonic complex is a fair assessment, and unfortunately afflicts many of us shortarses. I'm 5'5", I had the chance to support Oasis early in their trajectory, and then bumped into Noel in Harrods years later, he's maybe 5'6", 5'7" but no more, so, aware of his size, he is compelled to assert his will. That might have changed as he got older, me myself, I can't be arsed with all that nonsense anymore, although my family disagree haha!

    • @hughjass8430
      @hughjass8430 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Agree with alot of that. Tbh, Noel is a pr!ck who loves his own company. I don't mean that as an insult. It's just a result of his upbringing. He found solace in that guitar he learned to play on as a kid, and I have a feeling that Noel's only constant companion, the one thing he loves and can rely on is his guitar. After that, everything else is just business. Case is point, his wives!
      To be fair, there is no Oasis, no Live Forever or no Don't look back in Anger without Noel. I don't even think Liam is that irreplaceable because I think there's plenty of angry lads who can hold a tune. Noel did all the work, so he probably has every right to hire and fire band members. He's the one bringing in the money.

      I was never that into Oasis (more of a Blur fan at the time) but I did like the sound of Definitely Maybe, it had that kind of rough punk edge to it. To me they were never the same afterwards, Alan White's drumming was much more intricate and I never thought it suited them. The only song on Morning Glory that had that same energy was Some Might Say, which is, coincidentally, the only song on the record that Tony drummed on.

    Much respect to Tony, I love his drumming in the band. Alan tried to alternate tony's drum parts live but wasn't executed as well in my opinion. He was rhythmically and technically correct but lacks the edge that tony brought to the table. However Alan's drumming was amazing in all of the other tracks especially in songs like CHAMPAGNE SUPERNOVA, WONDERWALL, GO LET IT OUT etc.

    As a drummer I can say it’s all about the sound, we can all play ghost notes and double kick fills etc etc but it all depends on what fits the tune, he definitely fit the sound of the first album….true respect

    Loved this thanks very much. I was actually Whiteout's Drum Tech and was at the Oasis/Whiteout gig at the 100 club. I was also in the crowd at Glastonbury 1994. I think Tony's memory may have been a bit hazy (for obvious reasons), it was a little later in the afternoon and up to that point, I'd never seen a Pyramid stage crowd that big. It was more than 40,000. It was rammed packed all the way to the tree at the back. It was fucking mobbed!! Great memories.
    While I don't agree with Tony on him being able to do similar drumming to future records (He wasn't the Ringo triplet guy those records needed), there's absolutely no doubting his immense contribution to, in my opinion, not only by far the best Oasis album but one of the best albums of all time by anyone! Tony is such a nice guy and always comes across well in his interviews. What a legend.

    Quality interview. Respect. He was an integral part of the band: the band beginning. There are two key moments in any band's life: how they began and how they ended. That first album would've been crap without him. The sales numbers proved that. Thank you both for the telling of history.

  • @LikeSomeDude

    There’s no question that Oasis was the best live when Tony was drumming. And he said it himself: he brought a “toughness” to their sound that Alan White lacked. You hear it in Live Forever live versus what’s on the record. When Tony and the band kick in, it just knocks you flat. When Tony does the two beats before “You gotta make it happen” in Cigs n Alcohol?! Fookin top man! It’s like the thunder of the Rock Gods! That’s first lineup was THE lineup of Oasis. And Oasis only went tits up bc Noel thought it was all about him. Still, I forgive him, he made the greatest album of all time.
    Also: Tony! Loved your book!

      im a guitarist and i think to play with as a band ive noticed specifically that cig and alcohol has more balls to it than any of the other drummers used so im glad someone noticed it on that track that tony version is the best to my ear

      Not that I know anything about drums but to a lay person hearing the difference between Mccarroll and white, mccarroll can tell is less technical/ has less finesse but played harder and more basic but made oasis sound more raw.

    I remember an interview with Mani, which applies here and he was telling a story about the bass player from The Arctic Monkeys who was kicked out after their debut and he was saying "don't ever look at it as a bad thing. How many people can say they played on the biggest debut album in years". This applies here, Tony should be so fucking proud of himself and everything he/they achieved with him banging those skins.

    Met Tony & his mate Gav 'Jonesy' just after he left Oasis and all that - did a gig with him in Night & Day once or twice there ... all i remember in those times Tony was a lovely unassuming fella & can see he aint lost that, he's the original Oasis for sure - the bands true sound & soul came from the real life people who founded it & expressed it... keep going for it Tony!
