      Problem for any drummer in a band like Oasis is the drumming is just not that special or unique. In the early indie days if you could play a syncopated beat that was good enough. Unfortunately that makes them easily replaced.

    • @tlhull4460
      @tlhull4460 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      @@KevinSmithRules Noel came back to the studio and thought the drumming was 'perfect.' When he thought it was another drummer. When in fact it was Tony's playing. Noel just didn't like Tony. He needed a scapegoat. Is it any wonder that Guigsy (who kissed Noel's ass), Bonehead and Alan eventually left the band? Liam was always known as the 'difficult' member, but it's pretty telling that previous band members still associate with him. Noel? Not so much...

    • @KevinSmithRules
      @KevinSmithRules 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@tlhull4460 honestly Noel had every right to replace Tony, ngl he was a real dick about it ahaha. But as a drummer myself I don’t see Tony as anything more than capable of the fundamentals. Tony was solid and consistent. His lack of flashiness on the kit is what created the Oasis sound. If Guigsy was friends with a jazz drummer and they played with him at first, things would have went down a completely different path. Tony set the course.

    Great video and I’m more than impressed with how you got yourself around the UK that’s dedication!
    I’m a big fan of Oasis and of NG and LG but i’ve always felt their treatment of Tony McCarroll was just so wrong. I found my original copy of Definitely Maybe last month and my son who’s 15 and I have been listening to it non-stop in the car ever since. Not only is there nothing wrong with the drumming on that record, it is absolutely crucial to the record’s success. There is a lot of crap that has been spun around Tony that just shouldn’t be allowed to stand.
    If you listen to the album Live By The Sea he plays really well all the way through. More to the point, Owen Morris is quoted in print as saying Tony had great timing..almost unnaturally good and he hit really hard and consistently.
    That’s a very different story to the one that is spun since Tony was fired. It’s debatable as to whether he would’ve been right for WTSMG but I’ve always felt it was wrong of Noel to pretty much trash any career Tony might have had post Oasis by making him out to be damaged goods.
    It’s clear Noel never liked Tony and perhaps because Tony was the only one in the band who was a father , he felt capable of standing up to him and obviously Noel never forgave him.
    Noel should’ve just cited musical differences and given him a decent slice of the earnings and moved on, that would have been the honourable thing to do.
    Either way if you like Definitely Maybe you have to accept that Tony was the right drummer for that record end of story. The drumming is solid,, he hits hard and he keeps it punk and it’s sold 8 million copies..
    I rest my case!

      There's nothing on Morning Glory that Tony couldn't have played, it's not like there's any complicated beats on there.

      @@Willie.B.Hardigan Watching the video of what they call "Oasis` Disastrous American Gig" though, his drumming that night, live and in more difficult circumstances than a controlled studio setting, sounded pretty great to me, and the other guys looked happy enough with him. What a great video. It was nice that you were able to distinguish the various towns in Greater Manchester that make up the early Oasis story. The city as a whole is changing fast and your documentary serves not only to remember a group of people at a certain point in time but also the places that formed the backbone to these people's story. It was bittersweet to see The Boardwalk mentioned. The Boardwalk, Hacienda, Roadhouse, Sankey's Soap, so on and so on all served to bring a certain appeal to the City only to now be replaced with soulless tower blocks in an unrelenting march to gentrify the place and line someone's pockets.

      That's the thing with DM-era Oasis...the unknowing go on about "Oasis sound like the Beatles" and "Tony couldn't play and just played the same beat on everything", but if you compare the framework of DM-era Oasis to AC/DC, there it all is. Basic heavy drum/bass mix of quarter notes and 8th notes underneath, with the riffs on top. Tony actually played with more variation than Phil Rudd. I'm currently working on Oasis drum cover videos in preparation for getting into Oasis tribute bands and while the other three blitz Tony in the technical stakes, Tony is actually quite hard to "get". There are different degrees of swing that he used and he had this Ringo-esque side swipe on the hat and ride, which in particular made this slight crashing sound on the ride together with every snare hit, which served to make him sound heavier. He only had about three variations of his stock fill, but he had a way of glancing the toms and supported it with the kick underneath. It takes practise to nail that and not just toss it off as "yeah, whatevs, piss easy". Cut a long story short, in closing, you can't just sit down and the kit, bash out "boom-gah-boom-boom-gah" and say "right, that's Tony nailed".

    Tony was crucial in the early days and oasis would've been nothing without him, he suited defiantly maybe more then anyone could've ever dreamed to. But he wouldn't of suited the later stuff, oasis wouldn't have reached the levels they did with Tony's drumming style on morning glory. Tony was wasting studio time and didn't suit the new songs, it was right for him to go when he did

      That's quite the discussion, because some great tunes certainly came from the Alan White days. The Zak Starkey days were a wash, with maybe a handful of good tunes at best. White was really smooth and expressive with his drum fills, which can be heard on tracks like "Stay Young". Starkey was more of a straight-forward thumper, like on "Layla". But Tony McCarroll was there when they had no particular sound and no hit songs. His style set the foundation for the first two albums, which are forever classics. Listen to the dance tunes Noel has been making this past year and see that he can definitely use Tony again.

    My favourite Oasis song is 'Bring it on down', it's a true I don't give a fuck, I'm me punk tune. I feel its the drumming that truly leads the the feel of this song. Maccarol deserves credit along with the others for what he contributed.
    I get the feeling that Noel just didn't like him or felt he wasn't cool enough for the band, I know that sounds shallow but if he was cool as fuck and his drumming was the same I think Noel would have let him stay. I heard they really made him feel unwelcome on the last tour and TM must have felt he was on the out. He says it was a shock when he got the call to let him go but I find that hard to believe.

    It’s funny. I grew up in the UK (Northern Ireland) 70s, 80’s and 90’s before moving to the US. But most people are totally unaware in America of the impact Oasis had both in Britain and abroad, but especially in Britain. They truly were a phenomenon. They will never be able to replicate it. They to me captured, or partly created, the essence of mid 90s pop culture in Britain. It’s sad that all good things have to come to an end, and it’s sad how oasis fell apart, almost like an invisible force was pushing against them. The mid 90s were probably the best time in my life and hearing certain oasis songs makes me yearn for those years again and I’m filled with melancholy

      @@SuperDavidGnomo I think Noel may have re-recorded some of the basslines, but I'm doubtful that he would have had time to re-record them all. I posted some notes on this a while back, hopefully this may be of interest. Also it might be useful to note the different versions of Definitely Maybe
      Version 1: Batchelor sessions
      Recorded between 8th - 23rd January 1994 at Monnow Valley studio, Wales; Mix attempted between 24th - 27th January 1994 at Olympic Studios, London. Producer: Dave Batchelor. Engineered by Dave Scott. Unreleased.
      Version 2: Sawmills sessions
      Recorded 24th February - 4th March 1994 at Sawmills Studios, Cornwall; Mixed on 7th-8th, 11th-13th, 16th-22nd, 24th-25th March 1994 at Eden Studios, London. Co-produced by Noel Gallagher and Mark Coyle. Engineered by Anjali Dutt. Unreleased, but the first mix of these sessions can be found on the Safety Masters set. A mix of Columbia from this session will be on the deluxe edition of Definitely Maybe.
      Version 3 (released mix by Owen Morris)
      Recordings from Monnow Valley (Slide Away), Sawmills (most of the album), Loco (some of Liam's vocals), Out of the Blue (Shakermaker) and elsewhere remixed by Owen Morris at Matrix Studios, London (2nd-5th May 1994) and mastered at Clear Studios, Manchester.
      On whether Guigsy played bass on DM:
      We don't have complete recording credits for every track on Definitely Maybe... but, putting two and two together from what is known, I think that Noel may have re-recorded some, but perhaps not all, of the basslines on the released version of the album. Rock 'n' Roll Star is a possibility. The Melody Maker article on the making of Definitely Maybe confirms that Rock 'n' Roll Star was one of the tracks that Owen Morris remixed from the Sawmills recording. And yet the original mixes of the Sawmills recording of the track (which can be heard on the Safety Copy of the Definitely Maybe Masters) feature a slightly different, less prominent bassline. I believe this is Guigsy's take.
      My guess is that maybe when Owen Morris remixed Rock 'n' Roll Star and Columbia (at Loco Studios, 23-24th April 1994) he got Noel to re-record the bassline as well as re-recording Liam's lead vocals on Rock 'n' Roll Star (the album version uses a different vocal take than the original mixes on the safety masters).
      Also, I'm not sure that Noel would have had time to re-record all the bass parts. As I understand it, by the time Owen Morris got on board, they were running out of time to finish the record and, after approving his work on Rock 'n' Roll Star and Columbia, they let him get on with remixing the remainder of the album whilst they were on tour. Noel mentions in the DM DVD documentary that whilst on tour they would receive mixes on cassette for approval. So I'm not sure how much time Noel would've had by that stage to re-record all of Guigsy's bass lines. I've put a recording timeline on this page, for reference.
      I think that some confusion may have arisen due to how Owen Morris treated the basslines during mixing: "I put the bass guitar through a Mini Moog synthesiser and used the filter section to take all the top end off and just created a pure low sound… this was necessary and successful because it took away the hits of the notes and therefore hid the imprecise playing." Full interview here.
      As a result the bass lines on many tracks are, deliberately, less clearly audible than they would've been before. Maybe this got misunderstood by Tony as Guigsy's basslines having been wiped completely...hence the bitter disagreement between them recounted in Tony's book. Or maybe he wrongly concluded that all Guigsy's bass lines had been re-done on the basis of hearing Morris's remix of Rock 'n' Roll Star? Just a theory though!

    Tony was a good guy.. I think problem is Tony was older and had a kid.. He was more mature, and noel couldnt manipulate him like he could the others. Plus lets say wheb you scared and and Noels things to hide in your own incompetence, its best to shift that problem onto someone else.. Noels 100% egotistic control freak psychopath and a bully... He probably wnated to be everytjig liam is.. And wishes he was liam aswell. Ive heard a thing about noel i hope isnt true... Something very serious and sick.

      Noel asked Tony to leave because once the sessions for Whats the Story started in Wales, Noel knew Tony wasn't going to be able to drum the new material, as it was more laid back and ballad-oriented. Like it or not Noel was the only songwriter and main influence in the band at that time and he knew better than anyone what was or wasn't going to work, and hate to say it but he was right, and we can all see from how successful the album was. I'm not hating on Tony at all I think he's a great drummer and he set the course for Oasis in those first few years, but they were changing course on the second album and Noel knew it wasn't going to work.
