      @zekelucente9702 I enjoyed many evenings at the Magic Castle back then too, and at a couple of other venues in LA that offered live magic (I recall that Gladstone's on the PCH had magicians wandering from table to table) but I never saw Randall. We loved the close-up card magic in the small rooms as much or more than the stage stuff in the big theater. Randall's levitating dollar with Carson was amazing!

    In 2001 Randall Richman was pulled over for a driving infraction. A sobriety test indicated that he was intoxicated, Randall decided to fight the charge in court. After an initial 10-2 mistrial the case was dismissed. It turns out that Randall was pulled over just after teaching a fire-eating class at the Magic Castle in Hollywood, he wasn't drunk, the chemical residue from his demonstration gave a false breath-alcohol reading. After the trial, Richman invited jurors to a free performance at the Magic Castle. One juror said she was impressed by the magician, “He’s a showman,” she said, “but I believed him.”

      @@MadScientist267 Actually you are wrong. Enclosing it in the glasses is intended to fool you, which it did, into thinking no string can be used (in truth its not a string but a wire but im not arguing about aesthetics) when in fact the "string" is positioned beyween the glasses.
      The same effect may occur when they use hoops (giant rings). The "string" can be run at an angle or even distorted. This can be seen when the hoop is passed most of the way through the object then reversed direction. They must reverse the direction because of the "string."
      But i suspect you are correct in one aspect, its not obvious. I gave the readers too much credit.

    Randall Richman...Who is he? Where is he? I've never heard of him before or since his appearance on The Tonight Show. I've been a member of both the International Brotherhood of Magicians and the Society of American Magicians for close to 25 years and have heard of or seen all of the great magicians out there. Some of them have even lectured for our local magic club of which Lance Burton and Mac King are active members. The two effects he performed, The Levitating/Floating Bill and the Forced Card (3 of Spades) to Impossible Location are both classic tricks in the world of magic. A great magician no doubt, but why haven't we seen more of him?

  • @StarwaterCWS

    The dollar bill trick opened the door to ‘levitational illusions’ written by Samuel J. Kirkpatrick (only 100 copies were printed) that truly revolutionized suspension animations using nothing more than rare earth magnets . Not a typical magnet, they were large O shaped rings placed under the table. The crumpled dollar bill contained the opposite charged mini magnet that had to be exactly centered at a specific height. What gives it away is the glass rotation in which the crumpled bill rotates due to magnet shape and the bill never deviates off center. Great illusion!

    He obviously already had another three of spades held between his toes, but how he forced Johnny to pick that particular card is the real trick. A well conceived and executed "force" on his part.

      @@TC-eo5eb No, you can see a few of the cards when they are being moved around

    • @BrandonHann
      @BrandonHann ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@AnimationArtWorld I bet there were some random cards on the top and bottom (or maybe even the bottom) and it was an odds game considering most people would pick a card from somewhere in the middle. So if all the middle cards were 3 of spades, it would work. Also, there was no reason for the magician to ask Johnny to tell him what card was picked, which leads me to believe he asked because he wanted to make sure the trick was going correctly. I wonder what plan B was if Johnny had picked another card.

    • @skaizun
      @skaizun ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BrandonHann You're forgetting something: Johnny shuffled the deck after choosing the card. Anything that the magician had set up would have been lost. Furthermore, if most of the cards were the 3 of spaces, it would have been highly probable that it would have appeared at the "bottom" of the deck, instead of the ace that appeared as the magician showed the deck to Johnny. And, he, literally, had nothing up his sleeve. However, he did see the back of Johnny's card, which could have had secret markers on it, but, it still begs the question: How did he get it to his foot?

    • @ylekiote99999
      @ylekiote99999 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's a trick deck. Half the deck is full of the three of spades and they are stuck together with a normal card. The three of spades is always on the top so that is going to be the card someone chooses. I had that same trick deck myself when I was a kid except the "chosen card" was the ten of clubs.

    Two very, very simple tricks.

    The dollar bill trick with the wine glasses is very simple. He attached an invisible string to the dollar bill with a small dab of wax he had in his hand. The other part of the string was attached to his ear. I have done similar tricks myself with this method.

    It's funny in high definition and the studio light reflection you can see the magicians string he uses. But this still takes alot of practice and skill

      @@drewsquickfix Oh, I think I see it now. Coming off the left side of the crumpled bill, about 2/3 of the way up and extending out from the bill at about a 10 o'clock position. It's visible for about 11 frames.
      Thanks.
      Still an amazing trick though, isn't it? The skill in surreptitiously getting the bill entangled in the strings, and even just the engineering of where the strings have to be to be able to cause the bill to travel the paths that it does.

    If I need to guess the first one used magnetic liquid that the glasses were rubbed with. And when he wrinkled the bill he put some of the lotion on it with his hands. It's transparent so we can't see it. (That's why he did it and not Johnny)
    As for the second one, the trick was in the selection. The cards were made in a way that only the 3 of spades will be selected by Johnny.
    And, of-course it was already in his leg before the kick.
    Any other thoughts ?

      Pressing two glasses together? Why would you think a string couldn’t ‘survive this? Try pressing two glasses over a sewing thread, the thread will survive. Have you ever used this sort of thread?
      Magicians rarely do anything without a reason. After rolling up his sleeves why did he take out the pack of cards? Maybe he needed that pack on the table during the trick?

    Rare earth metal dust that's magnetized put on the bill from his fingers and you could see the light flicker in the video when he disperses it by quickly hitting the crumpled bill on the table when he puts it there. Curious how the video picks it up that flicker of light. i Sprinkle the same thing on my pajamas at night and float around the room

    Possible explanation for the dollar bill levitation trick: Not ordinary wine glasses . Telling me they are ordinary does not make it so. Therefore, why not wine glasses that send out an electromagnetic field conducive to the to the fibers in the dollar bill. Other explanation: Television camera trick in which only the audience and Johnny are in on the video effect. As to explaining the card trick, give me time, I'm thinking about it.
    Right or wrong, matters not, Randall was simply marvellous and impressive indeed!

    • @gabeabelson6295

      Soooo much simpler than that. The glasses are ordinary. And there are no magnets. As others have said, you can go into any magic store and buy the thing that makes this trick possible for about $5.
