How to Properly Repair a Bent Wheel

  • There is a huge difference between "road rash" and a "bent rim". The road or curb rash is cosmetic. It can be repaired in a DIY fashion in some cases. However, bent wheels will cause damage to your axles, bearings, and other suspension parts, aside from a wobble steering wheel. Find out how professionals repair my pot-holed rim and the steps needed to safely restore the integrity of my aluminum rim. Hope you enjoy! -L

    Mario is my kind of peoples. Lots of knowledge on the subject and likes to do things properly. It's really nice when you find a shop to work on your car where the people have that sort of mentality.

      Haha well he is one of the very few guys in the industry who knows what he is doing. Most of the tire shops won't do it right and send you to a mechanic to get everything else changed in your car.

    • @thearcher1740
      @thearcher1740 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@theoffice9803 You act like this is rocket science. He is heating up an alloy and using a hydraulic ram to bend it back. A child can detect a bent rim (extremely easy to see once you spin it on a balancer). Not hating on his work...one def has to be careful and know what he's doing but its hardly advanced work

    Great video and Mario is a top guy. I was taught that you put a tyre or tire on the rim and line up the red spot on the sidewall with the valve, then balance it. This results in less weights on your wheel to balance it, irrespective of the tyre or tire and the wheel's imperfections.

    • @RustyClouglin
      @RustyClouglin 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      either your shop is shite or the 100 other pieces in the geometry is fucked. control arms love to make it wobble haha. so yeah why dont you just change the shop :S and if in fact you did change it your car still wobbles, maybe not blame the guys at the tyre shop but fix your car? :)

    • @brando555555
      @brando555555 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah it wasn't the car. I replaced all four steel wheels on my Altima with a brand new set of tires and alloy rims and it drives like a brand new car now. My point was most tire shops don't pay nearly as much attention to detail as the guy in the video.

    I had this done to one of my Corvette wheels a few months ago by a much lesser shop. The first try the wheel wasn't round, the second go they actually machined some off the face of the wheel and it looked terrible while spinning, and still wobbled. Your wheel shop looks legit! Can't trust just any place with this kind of work.

    I've never thought of this, I purchased two new super sports for the rear and normally when there's a few simultaneous bumps in the road or when I hit a highway line my steering wheel feels just a little shaky, concerning but not enough for me to think anything of it, will definitely have it looked at as now thinking about it, it started after I purchased the tires. I was thinking that I was needing something new suspension wise as the roads have been also here but I just had it serviced and they said everything was perfect.

    For price reference, I'm the the SF Bay Area. I recently got a set of 19" Audi S3 rims with good 35 series Continental DWS tires for a good price off craigslist. Now I know why the price was so good!! :O
    Anyway, it was such a good price it was worth having two of the rims straightened. I had a local shop straighten them, remount and balance the tire, and had them stripped and new hyper silver powder coat put on for $225 a wheel. I had two done, I might go back and do another one or two. It was still an okay deal with getting two repaired and refurbished, but not such a good deal including the other two. The rims now look fantastic, by the way.
    I wish there was an easy way to spot out of round wheels off the car in the back of somebody's pickup truck.

    thank you so very much for this video. you've got a new subscriber. I am giving ProFormance a call tomorrow. I have steering wheel shake that is driving me insane. I've gone to six different places and still the same issue. I even went to the honda dealer and they are telling me that I most likely have a bent wheel.

    great simple explanation on why a rim would be not be at perfect round - to compensate for the tire's imperfections.

    i do this every day but with a completely different straightener and technique, for instance i never heat the wheel all the way around as they did there, want the heat on the low spots to create a hinge so to speak. very interesting to see a different setup and technique used though. Also educated me on how dropping an uninflated, dismounted tire can cause damage. thank you for sharing.

      Glad we can help. Reason we heat the whole wheel is because some cast wheels will stress on the opposite side of the push. The wheel needs to act like a spring.
