      It's the same in the game and it's a brillant choice from both directors because how gutwrenchingly raw it is. Sarah's last visual was probably her panicking, screaming dad *looking away from her*. Same for Joel - his daughter's last words weren't words at all, but pained wheezing and screaming. There's no goodbyes in this new world Joel gets thrown in - it is brutal and so is the game/show.

    Holy....for the cast that mostly didn't play the game, the directing and writing completely recreated this iconic moment. This is in good hands.

    • @GrippeeTV
      @GrippeeTV ปีที่แล้ว +162

      I’ve been saying from the start that that’s a good thing. If they play the games, they can’t make the characters their own because they’ll have a cognitive bias of how they “should” act the scene. They’ll be recreating scenes instead of acting what to them are original scenes, and you’ll have worse performances as a result of trying to recreate someone else’s. As long as the writers stay true, having the actors and actresses go in blind creates more believable characters.

    • @stahnke_as_pho
      @stahnke_as_pho ปีที่แล้ว +47

      @GrippeeTV I forgot if it was Neil or Craig, but in the podcast one of them said something along these lines to Troy, "If he watches the game, the best take he can give us is a bad impression of your performance."

    I think the scene is actually done even more well here - Sarah's realistic reaction to being shot (hyperventilation etc) is even more horrifyingly true to life than the scene in the game. The panic and fear of someone dying in moments is also (even more) authentic. It is a tough scene to watch, but is probably one of the most realistic depictions in a visual medium.

      It captures the feeling of real traumatic events better, but I felt the game vocal actress captured the innocent child better with her high pitched squeals, which to me made it more heartwrenching.

    I like how they handled this. In the game, before the shot, it was, "But sir.. There's a little girl." ANd in the show, "I'm sorry," after the shot. Both did a good job of showing the reluctance of a faceless, uncredited soldier. Both of them did a fantastic job in a few words of portraying how rough the situation is, how desperate everyone was. I am so hopeful for the show for staying so close, despite differences, to the source material. Hopefully this keeps up.
    And holy shit, the addition of Joel's plea to Tommy... What an amazing job they did. Please HBO. PLEASE continue to do justice to this amazing story.

      The only reason the soldier didnt say that in the show is because they cant show a US military commander giving orders to kill a child. A scene that would stir so much negative emotion towards the US military is a no go. Its not a problem though if its an individual acting alone.

    A detail I really like is that Tommy was a veteran of the Gulf War. In the part where Joel called for his help, Tommy knew that a shot to the stomach, especially for a teenage girl like Sarah? He knew that there was nothing they can do. Even if Sarah was alive for a single moment, Tommy knew that she has no chance. And that’s just tragic.

      @flowerfaerie8931 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think you're talking about agonal breathing, which isn't what Sarah's doing here. She's hyperventilating from extreme pain and fear. Agonal breathing only happens during a prolonged death, when most of the brain has already shut down and only the most basic functions are still operational, it's a reflex to try and get more oxygen to the brain. A person (or animal) is not conscious during agonal breathing, and a quick death like this won't cause that response.

    0:37 - I like how in this version this faceless soldier seems to be tougher than in the game but still has his humanity side. In the game he says smth like “But there’s a little girl” and we can hear that he genuinely regrets what he is about to do and we understand that smth horrible is about to happen. But here (especially for those who didn’t know the game plot) it’s so subtle - he says “I’m sorry, repeat?” - one might presume he just didn’t hear something. And only when he shoots, we understand that he said this “repeat?” because he was extremely shocked by the order he was given.

    I don't know if you all have noticed but in this scene both in the video game and in the series (it's more noticeable in the video game) the way Joel expresses towards Sarah "Come on, Baby girl" is the same as in the final scene when he finds Ellie in the hospital and is carrying her in his arms (even the same as in this scene).
    It's like an indirect reference that confirms what we all know, Joel loved Ellie like a daughter. What a nice touch by NaughtyDog.

Went from dreading this shows premiere, and some of the casting choices, to being 100% on board and actually feeling excitement for what they are gonna do with some of the other huge scenes from the game. Holy Christ that scene was gut wrenching... 1:40 to the end is the quickest my mind has ever been completely changed about something, and I am so glad this show is in competent hands. I honestly feel really bad now for not being too happy with the casting choices, every single person just absolutely nailed their roll, and I'll be really surprised if Joel's actor doesn't end up nominated for or winning some major awards for his performance.

      @@checkmattee222 I'm not sure what TilenHD is talking about, saying people are upset at the race of the actors cast. That's not the issue people had at all, the real reason people hated the casting choices is because alot of the most iconic characters looked completely different from how they appeared in the game, especially Ellie which I think was the cause of most of the backlash. That's really it, just seeing an actress who looks nothing like her game equivalent rubbed alot of people the wrong way, sort of like Daniel Craig in the James Bond reboots, or Sirius Black in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, then ended up eating their words and giving rave review about their performances. Same thing happened again recently with the live action Aladin film. Everyone thought Will Smith was going to be a horrible genie, but all those same reviewers and fans ended up saying he was the best part of the movie BY FAR

    Might I add a reminder that a video game adaptation in a live action medium is capable of being great, it's just that people behind said projects are not good enough to tell a faithful story that perfectly captures the essence of the world and the characters. You don't need it to be 1:1, you just need it to be faithful. Same applies to anime, books, game boards and so on.

Likewise, concerning the time, the time comes from Sara’s room clock.

And this scene by itself is still incredible, considering the high expectations we all had for it. It's not a carbon copy, it really is doing it's best to surpass the game and give us something different, but staying true to the spirit of the game. I'm just praying to god season 2 isn't all crammed up and rushed like the last of us part 2 with all the time jumps. They should extend the Jackson parts as season 2. And recast Abby so she is more realistic looking and doesn't look like a steroided hulk and it might actually do part 2's storyline better. And have Joel die with some respect. Jesus.

    This scene sold the show for me, the entire opening did, the outbreak the chaos it was so well done and felt even more harsh when we saw more of Sarah and Joel living life before the infection hit, we saw her interacting with neighbors we saw signs of the disease spreading it was brilliantly paced and effective.
    Then there was this scene, and Pedro had already been in my good graces as an actor before but this really showed his skills IMO, the way he handled this scene had so much emotion, fear, sadness, grief, shock, terror, you instantly start to get he’s more panicked than anything and doesn’t know what to do, he’s in so much fear like any father would.
    And Sarah’s actor did just as well portraying a very real depiction of what getting shot would be like, you instantly feel how real this is, the piece of resistance in my book is she just dies, no last words no final breath she just dies in Joel’s arms as he’s still panicking, just slips away
