I've had the demo version for a while, it is indeed amazing. I've been holding off buying the full version because the sun is shining, when I do I may never leave the house again!
Ahh that's really cool! Your demo made me realize how useful it is to play around with the sound you're putting into a delay to work best with the settings!
Thank you for the detailed explanation. You have a very calm and pleasant way of communicating things. One listens and watches you very gladly. The guitar sound fits very well with your style.
Amazing- Totally agree! This delay has all the features i’ve been looking for. It’s going to make reaching for anything else very difficult. Cheers Valhalla!!
Swooped in and grabbed it as soon as it dropped. Everything from Valhalla is lovely. This goes nicely with Valhalla Plate as well. Tape delay and plate reverbs are my bag.
Had just typed a comment about Shimmer on your FB page before coming over here to hear this... can't wait to hear what you do with the tow of this together!
Bill,... great demo. You showed the best of this plug-in from a studio guitarist's point of view and you just saved me from pulling the trigger on TC electronic's Flashback 2X4 I already have Valhalla's Vintage verb and Plate and I'm considering Shimmer. I wasn't sure about the Delay plug-in after listening to the synth demos done by the guys at Valhalla, but you nailed this. I'll download the trial version and try this out with new ears..!!! By the way... LOVE the tonality of that PRS Baritone. Thank you for blazing the trail
Interesting how a delay can sound like a reverb which is the theory behind the Valhalla Supermassive efx. The ghost is a lot like the awesome cloud delay on the SP404 MKII. Which is great for synths set diffusion at large size but smaller amount just for subtle pitch warping.
Dude, you could've made an hour long video of this, and I would happily watch the whole thing! If it was $50 for you, it's probably around $80 here (Australia). That's still quite cheap, for everything it offers. Awesome demo mate! 🖤
All of the Valhalla plugins are worth every red cent. Ironically, I haven't gotten this one yet as the "Übermod" plugin has a series of delays in it, but not as long a delay time as 'Delay' seems to have. So now it's on my list of things to get.
Even though this isn't something that I would consider buying since I don't mess with plug-ins, a live stream where you jam out with this would be totally awesome possum!
Great video as always, good to see you reviewing plugins as well as hardware. I think you’ll like this one from Boz Digital Labs - Imperial Delay. It’s on offer at the moment for $29 and has a similar amount of flexibility, but the Valhalla may just have the edge.
I got this amazing plugin a few months ago. First, I thought it's just like other delays I got. But after I installed it and put it to the test, I found out it's "post-rock sauce". I used it on guitar, piano and even vocal lines in a post-rock song, and man, that's really amazing! And I'm glad you got this and put it to the test!
You just can't compare the process power of something like a Valhalla Delay, BigSky or EchoSystem are good but a VST plugin can rely on your own system, that's why if you have something with just 4 cores and 8gb ram or slower the valhalla delay might even lag if you have more that 1 thing in your mix. It's indeed an incredible plugin and I hope with this pandemic someone will just try to make something similar to ValhallaDelay.
I find that "HiFi" mode works a lot better for Frippertronics stuff. The factory preset "HiFi-4-bar Looper" under Echoes/Loopers sounds nice, especially when you set Era to "Past" mode. I'm guessing HiFi mode is modeled after a lot of the old classic reel-to-reel tape machines. Not as warbly and saturated as "Tape" mode, but really handy for looping.
Great demo. Not only do the delays sound great, the "Valhalla delay" reverb sound out of this world. Please tell me which speakers or studio monitors can I use, so the guitar will sound great. Thanks
Valhalla is up with the best. Have you tried Echo Boy by SoundToys (some former Eventide gearheads)? Easily the best delay plugin ever. Calling it delay is kinda an understatement, it's indeed, the holy Grail my friend.
@@poulwinther It's not better, I've used both. The echoboy is almost always a bit darker and grittier in every mode. It also has kind of a shitty GUI, even though it looks cool there's just way too many tiny buttons and knobs which makes it harder to do a ton of tweaking. I like the clarity of valhallas delay, even though it still has some dirt to it, it cuts through a mix way better than the echoboy.
@@vikinglord7252 Thank you for the info. In the meantime I tried the Valhalla Delay demo and suddenly understand how one can be superior despite all the features. When A/B'ing Valhalla with my age old H-delay from Waves, the Valhalla sound thin and tinny. I can get all kinds of nice tape and grit effects with all the settings but what I mean is that little bit of extra analog smoothness in the general tone when going through a bucket brigade or even a real Space Echo. I get that with the H-delay while basically the opposite with Valhalla. I really thought H-delay was dated and nothing special, but after trying Valhalla I appreciate H-delay so much more. Even if I had both I doubt I would ever use Valhalla at all. It will be interesting to try Echoboy after that realization but because the demo is the full bundle I am waiting for a time slot to be able to through everything. I can see what you mean about the Echoboy GUI though, but on the other hand I think the Valhalla GUI's are too simplistic. We should be beyond 80's graphics capacity I think? Now FabFilter on the other hand do a really nice compromise between looks and practicality. Their delay plug seems really weird though.
Since I dont have computer any more my sounds are coming straight out of the pedals and amp. Very Pink Floyd. Looking forward to prosperity and a computer again.... soon. Bill....help me! ?
It works like any other plugin does. You can set it up on a channel and then monitor through the channel to hear the effect as you play, or record dry and apply afterwards.
The clean guitar tone was comprised of the following pedals which went in directly to the audio interface: 1. Wampler Ego Compressor 2. Laney IRT Pulse Tube Preamp (set to clean tone) 3. Morley Little Alligator Volume Pedal
If your DAW supports mapping plugin controls to MIDI messages, you can control anything on the Valhalla Delay. I posted another video demonstrating how to do just that, including using this plugin: th-cam.com/video/SEPHu7nLn8M/w-d-xo.html
That all depends on your setup. I don't play out live very often, but when I do I prefer to use pedals, at least at this point. That may change in the future due to plugins like this one.
Thanks for the quick reply, it sort of makes sense, I suppose I’m just confused about the Laney pedal. I’m just trying to budget with a Scarlett audio interface but was curious about using pedals going straight into an interface with no amp. Does the laney just add sort of an IR speaker simulation to the sound? I’m only confused since audio interfaces have built in pre amps, and the laney is also a pre amp. Sorry if that’s confusing
Yes, there is a cab sim built-in. It is not amazing, but there are some nice sounds to be had. And although I don't do this, there is a USB port on the Laney that allows it to be used as an audio interface.
Not quite. I used a Laney IRT pulse, wampler who compressor and a Morley volume pedal into the computer. That being said, the logic guitar amp Modeler would also work very well.
So interesting. 08.45 sounding almost like a Strymon ... This is an awesome plugin, but for me with just too many options. Same with the Strymon Bigsky and Eventide Space. Am re-arranging (selling part) of my studio to get a Blue Sky, which will be just fine and awesome for me. But still, amazing what you can do with this plugin (or the Timeline, or the Volante etc) if you have got the discipline for it. Although i'll never be using daws again i still appreciate this video very much. Thanks!
Would you please make a video.....plug-ins for dummies.......from where to plug your guitar in, to using the plug-ins .......I've never used plug-ins it seems complicated....and expensive.
Michael complicated - probably yes. Pedals are of course easier to use. Expensive - not really. For the price of a big strymon pedal you can probably get all you need, a used laptop and an audio interface. Plugins are cheap. A pedal vendor like strymon would make three to four pedals out of this plugin for 300-400 each.

I love the diffuse function. Wow. It’s like a “Make it sound good” button for ambient music.
What other pedals and/or plugins have a similar function?
Check out the Valhalla Shimmer, that thing is mindblowing.
I think some pedal manufacturers need to step up their game

How does Soundtoys Echoboy compare to this one? Can it do the same things?
