@thesrabbit Yes, it goes well beyond the music making community, as if that weren't bad enough. Some content creators knowingly make false copyright allegations just to harm others they happen to dislike or disagree with, and face no penalty when their claims are struck down.

The only way these folks will be stopped is by destroying the commercial viability of it through processes like CCB dot gov claims and DCMA counterclaims. The penalties for this will add up over time if everyone responded with a counterclaim via the ccb. Online service providers (OSPs): In limited circumstances, the CCB has jurisdiction to hear claims against OSPs that are referring, linking, or storing allegedly infringing material on behalf of a user, provided the OSP has been notified of the infringement through a properly submitted takedown notice under the DMCA but fails to expeditiously remove or disable access to the material.

LED zeppelin, had stairway to heaven, in litigation for 40 years. In those 40 years time, every single music platform and social media platform, has used some type of music, to build their platforms from. And never paid their musicians.
Your technocratic overlords, are in the business, of robbing rockstars. All of them do it, sony, BMG capital, they're all ripping everybody off. They are in huge financial troubles. They are in such huge financial trouble right now, sony, after they accidentally burned their warehouse of Masters down. Has been taking what music they can find. And re-recording it with female voices... This is why some of your favorite songs from Rock and roll, have been rearranged, re-orchestrated, and resung, by people you've never heard of. I mean seriously there's nobody that they won't rip off. The other day I heard rearrangement and a female voice singing Maggie May by Rod Stewart...

I listen to a lot of ambient music, and it's a pleasure to hear your creative guitar-playing in an ambient recoding. Also, I've seen videos by Venus Theory on this same issue, where a corporation slapped him with a copyright claim against his own music. This has also happened to Matths, Matt Hodson, a well-known UK synth composer. It's a growing epidemic of corporations using AI to fraudulently claim content from original creators. We need to address this at wider scale in the music industry, such as the annual NAMM show.

I love music. I love playing music. I love sharing music. I love listening to music. I love thinking and daydreaming about music.
But then there is the music industry, mainly populated by a giant mass of people for whom love of music is a forgotten afterthought. For these people the fact that people love music is just a weakness for them to exploit and profit from for money or fame or power or whatever else comes along with that. And frankly these people have performed the sad act of taking something beautiful and ruining it for themselves and many others.
Do not let them get to you. They don’t understand what you have. They will never have anything so beautiful as the feeling of being lost in your own creation. Of just purely loving something for what it is. To me it is a huge badge of honor that your video made 37cents. It’s a sign that it was a product of pure love. Hold onto that and know you have something so much more precious than they could imagine.
My young kids make up songs in the shower. 10-minute imagined reworking of songs they like but hardly know. Or totally new songs. Our job as adults is to HOLD ONTO THAT beautiful instinct and not let the world stomp it out of us. That is the place of real joy and the real music. You are there.

I'm glad if contemporary artist gets the ad revenue if we use one of his or her hymns but what really annoys me is when we upload a hymn and both the hymn tune and the words are in the public domain (with both author and composer being dead for over 100 years) and yet someone still makes a copyright claim against our video. People are still claiming that they wrote a famous tune by Bach or Hayden, etc. and that we performed their tune! Thieves!

I really appreciate you taking the time to bring this to light. You have dealt wisely with the situation and maintained your integrity thought the process. It is shocking to hear companines such as Epidemic sounds can treat artists running a small outfit. I mean its rediculous that this claim would be initiated in the first place. Its concerning. TH-cam needs to to seriously sort out whatever content regulatory tool it uses to check for copyright. It shows up how these automated tools are inconstitant. The fact that it could not tell the difference between piano and ambient guitar. With the amount of content uploaded daily there must be a ton of overlapping similarities in the music that is produced. Chord progressions are reused over and over and there is going to constantly be some sort of overlap in melody etc. The fact that you had to go through the stress and waste your time to refute their claim is unacceptable. It shows how robotic these corporations are and how increasingly robotic the world is becoming.

YT's response should have been this: "Dear Epidemic; we have checked our analytics to find- Orion has never viewed your site, nor the site of artist, Hannah. It is impossible for you to prove that Orion has heard of, or heard music from the catalogue of your artists, and we, therefore, must reject your claim. The notion that, a creator was able to compose 9 hours of original music- but for 30 seconds was stumped, and had to resort to theft to finish the piece- we find absurd." Keep on, Orion!! 🎼🎼

That said, one thing I have learned over the years is that no matter how much you invest in being a person of integrity and kindness, there will always be a small handful of individuals who either attempt to keep you from success, throw you under large busses, lie to you, use you, and or steal from you.
These are battles which make up the war. Losing a battle or choosing to walk from one does not at all mean losing the war. This is just one battle, one hill of many on the journey to success. It is what you do with what happened on this hill that will add to define your future and its outcomes.
We all have losses on our journey’s. We can use them to robustly grow furthering our inner strength and becoming remarkably resilient.

I had a similar thing happen years ago with 3 of my songs. Before this happened I had been signed to a publishing company that did not require me signing over my copyright ownership.I was unhappy with the publishing companies lack of marketing and was able to terminate my contract.I just randomly checked my videos one day and noticed that 3 of my videos were no longer monetized. I checked into it and found that another publishing company claimed to be the copyright holders. I disputed it and it was rejected two different times. While it was being disputed I kept looking at the copyright certificate hanging on the wall. In fact I even gave TH-cam my copyright register number and the publishing company still refuted the claim. I then was able to contact the original publishing company and they denied knowing the publishing company who now claimed ownership of my copyright at first. But once I gave them all of the copyright information they said that they would look into it. After a couple days I noticed that I was able to get my videos monetized. The frustrating thing is how they denied everything I said at first even with me having proof of ownership. So I can relate to what your experiencing. Good luck and I hope your able to get your music back.

Those compilations get added to streaming services by people who only had license to release it on that hard media. I go to upload my original work, and I GET copyright struck when I am the copyright holder of the original music. Its such a TERRIBLE process. Ive had so many people make money off my music. I just gave up trying to take it down, especially on soundcloud.

@ Hey, you miss every swing you don’t take. Maybe there’s a better option than accepting the status quo. A Class Action lawsuit is likely the only option that might bring about change in this situation.
Heck, even the threat of one might be enough to get YT to look at improving things. You don’t need to be as rich as YT/Alphabet to launch a lawsuit. The potential penalty just needs to be more expensive than the cost of fixing the problem. Litigant creators could crowdsource contributions from their audiences. Throw in some direct donations from a few of the wealthier YT creators, and a Class Action suit could amass a very sizeable legal war chest.

The music industry is gaming copyright to shutdown artists in the way they used to sign artists but never press a record, but kept them in an exclusive deal. By making specious claims against musicians like us, they don't have to include an advance with the contract, and we have to amass legal costs to fight these cooyright claims and generally don't make enough to do that, so we roll over and walk away.
Using copyright killed one of the members of Men at Work in the suit against Land Downunder. The flute lick was supposed to sound like an Australian folk song Kookaburra. Trouble is, the flute hook in Downunder is a different mode to the melody of Kookaburra, which is brighter, more major to Downunder's minor tones. Any musician can tell there's a difference, but the judge made the artists "cough up" millions. And the flutist from Men at Work committed suicide.
Venture capital entered the music business via Spotify, TH-cam and Apple, and they're literally as well as figuratively killing us to own all culture and deny us our own art as small independents. This era is a dark ages for the arts.
