    One of the cooler parts of the chess scene in the film is the bishops are symbols for watson and watson’s wife, who in sherlock’s mind, absolutely must not die. And by sacrificing almost every other piece on the board, are preserved

      Personally, I believe that the bishops are actually meant to represent watson and simza due to sherlock's line, "we each have two bishops" shortly before the cut back to the party room

  • @o..o5480
    @o..o5480 3 ปีที่แล้ว +933

    This scene actually has a hidden meaning. The queen was supposed to be Irene Adler, who Moriarty thought was his biggest threat, the two bishops were John Watson and Mary Watson, who Moriarty underestimated, and the rook is Lestrade, another one that Moriarty underestimated.
    At the end of the day, it's the ones he had underestimated that caused his defeat

      It's also worth noting that taking the queen was the big mistake that lost Petrosian the game and in the movie, Moriarty killing Irene is really what seals his fate. After that reveal Sherlock is clearly enraged and will settle for nothing less than the complete destruction of Moriarty and everything he stands for. Such an incredibly well written movie, super underrated.

    • @devagr
      @devagr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      I thought the queen was supposed to be the brother who was disguised as an ambassador, since his death coincided with the queen sacrifice. The brother was their "most important piece" because he was the evidence of Moriarty trying to start a war and he know a lot about his operation.

    • @quantumvideoscz2052

      And the reason they flipped it is because Moriarty is the one who started all of this and Sherlock is the one trying to stop it.

    After weeks thinking about this chess scene, i finally found out why in the film they managed to play the entire sicilian variation played by Tigran Petrosian and Bent Larsen but the color swapped and somehow the tempo still matched up. The reason is Sherlock, in the film, never played c4 (1:49). That makes even tho in the film white is doing the sicilian defence, the tempo still matched up because black didnt play 1 move that Levy mentioned

      Not just the long game, but he was willing to sacrifice all of his pieces if it meant protecting his bishops. The film's commentary states that during the game, the two bishops represented Watson and Mary, two people he could absolutely not have in danger. But they were also the two that did the most damage to Moriarty, who in turn underestimated them. The rook, representing Mycroft Holmes was also underestimated. And the Queen, the Queen was Sherlock. Lo and behold, he throws himself off of the balcony and takes Moriarty with him, sacrificing himself for the long game of defeating Moriarty and bringing his expansive criminal empire to rubble.
      I f*cking watched this movie religiously in high school.
