After shooting this video, the producer wanted her to do another take but her guitarist would not allow it. He didn't want her to have to go through it all over again.

It's awful that she went through this, whatever side she was on but I think his decision paid off because it makes it so much better that she was feeling it so intensely.

Please don't be upset or embarrassed to cry, it's nice to see someone who feels other people's pain so deeply, it would be a more loving and peaceful world if we cared more about each other. Thank you so much.

It was real for her and many women. She was the one being cheated on but wrote this from the perspective of the other woman so they knows this affects more than one person! It’s so raw and emotional!

NO she was not. Sugarland's "Stay" is the first of the duo's chart-topping songs to solely be written by singer Jennifer Nettles. Although she has never lived the storyline of the song, she knew the subject of betrayal is something everyone could relate to, yet she wanted to tell the story from a different viewpoint.

Just as information: on the same day this video was made, she signed the divorce papers, so she was in a high emotional state. Her ex doesn't cheated on her, but earlier she recognized, that there is no song out there from the perspective of "the other woman". Thats why she wrote this song. And cause of her divoce in real life, she felt it even more and thats why she shows and feel so much pain in the video.
Great reaction by the way!! :D

Sugarland is a very talented duo, and Jennifer Nettles has one of the most recognizable voices in country. I love this song. My dad had an affair and left us when I was young, so I've always had a very dim view of "the other woman". This song is the first one that's made me think about things in a more compassionate way.
I'm very sorry for the pain that you went through, but it's given you a lot of wisdom. Thank you for sharing it at the end of the video. Love yourself. Hug your wife and your beautiful boys.

That is not true. Per Jennifer herself: "The song was written four years ago and inspired by Reba McEntire's "Whoever's in New England," which was written from the perspective of a wife whose husband is cheating on her. Nettles knew countless songs written from that viewpoint but none from the other two people involved. She says most people don't realize that even the person who is doing the cheating gets hurt as well."

Jennifer Nettles has one of the best female country voices. I’ve listened to Sugarland since day one. But the first time I heard this song was on a tv show called Duets. Jennifer Nettles, Robin Thicke and two others and they did a contest where they sang duets with the contestants. She sang this and I broke. My understanding is that Jennifer herself was not in this type of situation but they had a long day and while recording this song they did a lot of different takes and each time it started taking an emotional toll on her. She finally got to the point where she broke down during a take and this is what you see in the video. Kristian, the gentleman playing the guitar, finally call it that they were done as he saw how the song was affecting her emotionally. Singers, good singers, tend to get wrapped up in the songs they sing.

I did some research on this awhile back. At first it wasn’t personal, she had an idea to write a song from the perspective of the ‘other woman’. She wrote it but didn’t record it until several years later, after she had divorced her cheating husband. So while she wasn’t the ‘Other woman’ in real life, the lyrics obviously hit too close to home.

This is a quote from an article about the song and what Jennifer Nettles OF SUGARLAND said: Sugarland's "Stay" is the first of the duo's chart-topping songs to solely be written by singer Jennifer Nettles. Although she has never lived the storyline of the song, she knew the subject of betrayal is something everyone could relate to, yet she wanted to tell the story from a different viewpoint.
The song was written four years ago and inspired by Reba McEntire's "Whoever's in New England," which was written from the perspective of a wife whose husband is cheating on her. Nettles knew countless songs written from that viewpoint but none from the other two people involved. She says most people don't realize that even the person who is doing the cheating gets hurt as well.
"Even though the person who is cheating might think he or she is getting away with something, they know they aren't living their highest truth," she says. "And they wouldn't be in the situation if they were just happy-go-lucky in the first place. Nobody is happy in this situation."
Once she decided to write the song from the other woman's perspective, Nettles was overwhelmed with emotions and says the song pretty much wrote itself.
"You know, it was just in a couple of sittings on my couch," she explains. "And once the first line came, 'I've been sitting here staring at the clock on the wall. I've been laying here, praying she won't call,' the story just unfolded."
Go look it up for the rest of the article!
I'm tired of seeing people commenting that this was about her life and that her husband was cheating...NO IT IS NOT!

Country love! This song is so amazing, and I've always felt one of country's biggest draws is it's ability to reach our experiences.
Obligatory suggestion - Delta Rae. They are pretty underrated, fit under the genre of "Southern Gothic", and turned down at least one record label in order to continue making the music they want vs the music they were pressured to. It was a risk but one that is hugely respectable!!! Their stuff is a lot of fun (especially because they tend to switch off who sings lead, depending on the song)
They have a few "Tarquin Studio Sessions" videos that are really good - "Scared", "Cold Day In Heaven", and "Run"
Other great ones are "All Good People", "No Peace In Quiet", and "Bottom of the River"
I think they'd really appreciate the boost to your audience, tbh!!!

i know when she recorded this her marriage was breaking up and i think her husband was the one with the girlfriend and she wrote this song as the gfriend and it was just killing her but i could be off on that a little im sure someone else knows it better but those emotions were real in this recording and the singing partner said no to another run thru just leave it like it is. i think its more powerful this way esp when she stopped lipsyncing to cry. very powerful. she is an amazing singer songwriter jennifer nettles is her name.

Love your reaction, she was definitely feeling it. She was freshly divorced (he cheated) and she decided to sing it as if she was the other woman. You can even see how somber Kristian (her guitarist) is. Sugarland has a lot of good stuff. For another emotional one, check out Craig Morgan - The Father, My Son, and The Holy Ghost. Find a live version from the Grand Ole Opry, his deep breath at the onset tells you it is hard for him. But he powers through it.

The music executives didn't this song would go anywhere, because it just had a guitar. didn't want her to release it, boy were they wrong.

Jennifer Nettles has one of the most powerful voices I’ve ever heard… very similar to Martina McBride…
Her vocals and her facial expressions just tug at the heart…
Bro- you are spot on with saying her eyes are amazing and touch the soul…. Your emotional response to this song was really cool because I’m right there with you….
    Amazing performance ❤

I'm sorry for what you had to go through, but so happy you found someone to heal you and appreciate you. I was married for 17 years and he cheated on me for many of those. Happy to be on my own, trying to discover who I am without being part of a couple, and learning to love who I am as an individual.

Makes you feel for the other woman. People can say that they would never put themselves in this situation until it actually happens. Man or woman, it is not right for ANYONE to treat someone that way. When it happens though you have to be strong cause in the long run it would hurt even more to stay in that situation.

Just watching the video is enough to break your heart let alone the lyrics that accompany it. 😢 Jennifer Nettles has always been one of my top favorite country artists and the songs she performs with Sugarland are always so honest. I would like to recommend a reaction to the song "Love, Me" by Collin Raye and "Don't Take The Girl" By Tim McGraw. Both songs tell beautiful heartful stories that I think you may enjoy.

Jennifer Nettles is one of the sweetest kindest people you will ever meet. I love Sugarland's music. Her Colab with Matt Nathanson is good too. If you want a really fun one from her listen to stuck like glue! Good luck not ripping your heart out on this one..... great review 👏

I have listened to this song so many times and everytime when she gets to the bridge my heart always sinks. Jennifer is as always will be one those vocalist that I always recommend, because you will be taken on an roller coster either from happiness or sadness.
Their is one song I would love to see you react to and that is "Even If It Breaks Your Heart" by Eli Young Band. This song is an absolute jam of mine and the video is one that will put a smile on your face. I promise it will be worth it totally.

When you shared your story, it mirrored my own. I only had one partner before my husband and it was hell. He lied. He cheated. He gaslight. I was the girl begging him to love her and I believed his lies for far too long. When I finally forced myself to end it for good, it felt like the world was ending. But five months later I met my now husband and we’ve been together for almost 8 years now. It took him treating me right for me to fully realize just how badly (beyond the lies and cheating) that the first guy had treated me. The mental manipulation he put me through is still something I battle to this day, not ever sure if I can trust what I’m being told, or even if I can trust my own view of reality.

This is a great song and well done. I cannot believe you have not listened to Chris Stapleton! Try the recorded and live versions of "Cold". You can pick just about anything of Chris' and won't go wrong. He is amazing live! Thanks for sharing and your fun reactions!
