I am loving your new gouache stuff! There are so many well preforming gouache he sets out now. It's such a good medium for people due to low toxicity and mess. The art creation watercolors were decent as well for the price.
Another excellent video, Marty - thanks for shooting, editing & posting it for us all to enjoy! I don't know if it's just me but the last 2 years seem to have been a 'blossoming' period for gouache. It used to be such a relatively rare medium, and instructional or review material either in print or on Y/Tube was so very hard to come by. But, as I say, over the last two years or so, I've seen so many good new brands appear - and have seen previously 'watercolour-only' artists start to feature gouache heavily on their channels. I'm still at the stage of dipping my toe in the water (no pun intended!) and have sets of Royal & Langnickel and also Arteza - supplemented with some Winsor & Newton artist grade gouache. It's been a real boon to me to have so many Y/Tube channels like your own now available to help me through the initial discovery process. And I noticed that someone recently commented on one of your recent Instagram posts that gouache really seems to suit your own style very well; I have to agree - all the gouache pieces that you've posted have been superb (not that your watercolour work was too shabby either, of course) and I'm sure you've had the occasional approving nod from the great Mr G! Anyway, it's late and I ramble - but thanks again for promoting this great medium. Best wishes and keep safe (just like we're trying to do here in Florida), Brian.
No, it is not just you. I also noticed that over the last two years or so, a whole lot of people got into using gouache. It has become a trend, definitely.
Hi Brian - Thanks for the note my friend. I think there's been a re-emergence of interest in gouache. Trends change and advancements in manufacturing can make a difference, but gouache as an illustrators paint is just ideal - At least that's what my research has revealed. The illustrators of the 30's, 40's and 50's seem to have been very keen on gouache, and its painterly qualities undoubtedly contributed. Ahhh, Mr Gurney has certainly been supportive and that is always appreciated. I also appreciate your support over these many years my friend. I hope some day to shake you hand in sunny FLA. Hope you are keeping well. All the best, Marty
I have been a fan of this company for some time. They produce so many fantastic but affordable art supplies. And that painting of the water tower was simply breath taking! Thanks so much for creating another wonderful video for us!
Thank you for this review! I was overwhelmed by the different brands and reviews I watched on YT. I got the feeling that some other youtubers pushed higher-end brands due to sponsoring, so I am happy you took the time to explain and showed everything. I feel comfortable buying this set now :)
Thank you. I never take money from manufacturers and rarely even take products. That way my reviews remain un-biased. Thanks for stoping by and I'm glad the info helped.
Hey Marty. Thanks for making this video. Interesting that you picked this set. I remember this is the first gouache set I picked up when I was first starting to paint, and I must say I was not happy with it, mainly because of the consistency of the paint. Not that I knew any better since I had no experience with gouache. Now that I have tried many brands I can say that yes, for the money this paint is a good deal, but also note that this paint doesn't doesn't have the consistency and feel of the more premium gouache ( Winsor newton, Holbein etc). Of course one tube of the premium stuff costs as much as this whole set so it makes sense. The usual advice for people that come from watercolor and want to try gouache is to buy a tube of white gouache (I recommend zinc white because it makes better mixes than titanium white) and use it with the watercolours. Thanks again for trying all these different supplies! Your painting was really nice as well.
Thank you for the note. Had you ever tried gouache before you tried these? I suppose any new medium can be off-putting If you haven't tried other brands it might be worth checking out a few. I've often mixed the two (watercolor and gouache) as it sounds like you have, but prefer the titanium white over the zinc.
Marti, honestly speaking, I just enjoy every one of your reviews on art products. I have been following you for years now, and I like to congrat you for a very honest and good reviews... Most of my materials, I have decide to jump on them after watching your reviews... So simply THANKS....
Wow, thank you! I really appreciate that Walt and never take it for granted. And the words of kindness and encouragement are deeply appreciated. -Marty
Hi Marty. Your gouache work has really taken off by leaps and bounds and it's such a delight to watch you paint. I really like this urban landscape piece - homage to JG and all. Of course your reviews are always so helpful. Have a great day!
Thanks for this great review.I have the same set and I tested the lightfastness of these colors for three months last summer in extreme conditions ( the temp was over 45 c and high ultraviolet rate) and the only color that showed just very little fading was the scarlet ..forgive my English because it is not my native language
Thank you very much for your review! It really helped me to decide to try these gouache as I am a beginner. I loved your artwork, it is really beautiful despite being a non professional material 😍😍
Marty, these are great, the sampling and your painting. I would get into so much trouble if I lived by Wet Paint. I dont get too excitied about lightfast on these paints. We all have to remember that journals are just for us to learn and try new things. I will remember that you have a link with Amazon now. Who knows maybe one day I will break down and buy an Etchr journal. I still have 20+ tubes of 37 mil of Davinci gouache, they seem to last forever. Always great to hear from you. Bye for now, your West Texas friend.
Hi Essie - Have you picked up the Etchr pad yet? They are great and you really need to give them a try, because I think you'd love them. That DiVinci paint would be awesome if you gave it a try. Stay great my friend. _Marty
@@owingsart I did get an Etchr in the mail from Amazon, I used the excuse that I needed to have a min. On an order. I haven’t tried it yet, I seem to need to look at it for a while. I fell over a week ago and cracked 3 ribs. It also affected my left hand and I am left handed. Right now I am just playing in an Arteza journal. I really would like to know if Pentalic is making the Arteza journal. The paper seems about the same. PS> I did find a Royal Talens set like the one you showed for $7.99, that was so low I had to try it but I just dont like it as well as Davinci. Guess we stick with what we started with. Take care, covid seems to be on the up tick here, be careful. Personally we are spending most of our time at home.
@@owingsart Yes, it was very helpful. I ended up ordering a set of these paints and I really like them. They are really are really good paints for the price, (I paid 12 Euros for a set of 24 tubes, that's amazing!) and they are holding up nicely. I had made the experience that cheaper gouache uses up very quickly, and these ones really surprised me. Very good option for practice and studies, when I don't want to use my more expensive paints. I was also very pleased to discover that these stick to a palette quite nicely, so left-overs aren't crumbling and being wasted. Also, I noticed that the clamshell thingy that they come in makes for a really useful little make-shift palette. Yes, I am a cheapo, but I also hate wasting plastic. 🙂
Royal Talens Art Creation isn’t even considered student quality by Royal Talens, but hobby quality. Here in the Netherlands this hardly costs anything. Van Gogh is their student line. Great result though with this cheap stuff.
i would also like to buy these gouache colors because they work well and Talens have also published the pigment list for art creation paints. I have gouache by Reeves, and they don't seem as good to me as Talens art creation. Art Creation is the hobby / scholastic quality from Talens. Otherwise, I still have gouache by Daler Rowney and a couple of tubes of Horadam gouache. 12ml is the small standard size for paint of the lower quality levels. There are always these 12ml sets of acrylic / watercolor / oil and, more rarely, gouache in supermarkets, decorative shops and $ 1 / € / pound shops.
I found this gouache to be super sticky on the brush, I hate the consistency. I would recommend reeves over this one! Or using M.Graham white gouache with regular watercolor. My 2 cents😆

And they don,'t sent every gouache pallet. I orderd marie,'s gouache two monds a go a huge set from alliepress. I still havent recived it😤😭😣 and i don,t think that i,ll ever get it. Very sad cause it looked very good on the pictor. I love gouache
Hi Kathryn and thank you for the question. I do use the same brushes. I know that some watercolorists prefer not to do that, but since gouache is a water-based medium, I have no trouble at all as long as I wash them thoroughly. I can't afford to own dozens of brushes, so I make do with what I have and haven't run into any problems at all. Hope that helps. -Marty
