thank you for this comparison! for some reason watercolor has always been much easier for me, even though it is very unforgiving. i have been trying to get more comfortable with gouache but it is really hard since it’s a completely different way of thinking! i always end up using too much water 😅 your videos encourage me to keep trying!
Thank you SO MUCH for doing this video!! I started with watercolor but I really like the look of gouache. All your videos on this platform and Skillshare and your Etchr class I purchased have helped. I’m still on a mission to work on gouache color mixing and “seeing” the colors in my reference to apply the multiple shades/variations in a piece like you do. Thanks again! 😊
💗💓💖 Very helpful! Both your examples are lovely. I’ve been using watercolor for decades, but just started painting with gouache. I’m amazed at how much I like gouache and how unexpectedly luminous it can be!
I first started painting years ago with acrylic as a total beginner and liked the opacity, but struggled with having paint dry and not being able to move it around. Last year I started taking watercolor classes, but it was so hard to transition to a transparent, water-based medium and having to think around highlights and paint backwards. Now I’m going to give gouache a try as it seems to be the best of both worlds
Thank you. Gauoche is my preference. It was great to see your thought process, your application, and your lovely outcome. One thing though, I don’t think in the main when painting with Gouache you can use any paper. I find with most of my work I benefit from watercolour paper. And 300 grams is my preference it allows me to decide to work a little wetter than I may have initially thought.
I really enjoyed this exercise. I struggled to get a decent green for the grass, probably because I had a limited cheap gouache palette, but I definitely liked the depth of colour of the background.
that's an awesome one Cecile! i'm saving up to buy some good quality gouache! i love the vibrancy of just one coat of gouache in the background compared to watercolor, which took multiple coats.
Thank you! Before you buy your gouache, I'm finishing an article about gouache prices, you might be interested in. Check it out on my blog: cecileyadro.com/category/art-tips/
Great video, thanks! I originally used acrylics, then watercolour for a couple of years, and then discovered gouache. So far I've just used it to paint greetings cards for friends and family but would like to expand that - it's such a versatile medium. I'll check out your workshop😊
I want to jump into gouache and it seems this is the painting medium I will enjoy. I am learning to paint simple watercolour pictures but I was thinking about using gouache, too. And I am convinced. :) Thank you for this video, it was really helpful in my decision making.
To me, the tones, flow, and texture of the watercolor worked best. I would like to see a 3rd example of a watercolor painting blended lightly with Gouache. Very nice, thank you.
Im more experienced with watercolour so i is easier for me to use, but ive been using gouache for a few months and its getting easier to use. I'm going to follow your bootcamp to be even more comfortable with it.
Thanks Cecile! The different ways the medium behaves is easy to see when the subject matter is the same for both. I have been painting with watercolours for just over 2 years and it was a steep learning curve! But I am in love with the way watercolour blends and has a life of its own. I recently started using gouache and I must admit, I still paint very carefully because of the habits I've picked up from watercolour... perhaps going forward I can utilise the strengths of gouache to be a little bolder and more expressive, as the medium is much more forgiving as you say :)
I prefer gouache, I haven't used gouache in years, like many many years 😂 like15 years 😅, I recently started again painting, have been using mainly acrylic, have been trying watercolour (much cheaper) then gouache where I live, just to get a hang again of painting etc 😍 I love your paintings ❤ very inspirational, thank you for this video
My favorite is watercolor only because I know that best... I'm having more and more fun with gouache though... and more and more success with it as well. And most recently I found out how to varnish/preserve gouache paintings too. Old dog learning new tricks...
Thank you.. this is precisely kind of comparison i was looking out for being info watercolors i find it so difficult to get into acrylics.. i feel gouache is a mid way. This helps
I am a long time watercolorist and have recently taken up gouache. I don't know why it has taken me so long to move to gouache. Probably because most of my watercolor teachers turned up their noses at gouache so I thought it was not something to use in my paintings. They were wrong, you are right. Gouache is magic.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful informational video with us. I appreciate your explaining the differences between the two mediums. I started out with painting with watercolors and I am just learning about how to paint with gouache. I am finding out that I kind of like both mediums pretty equally. I like both of these differences and how they can help me achieve what I am wanting for my paintings.
I've painting with watercolour for 30 years so I obviously love it. Gouache is new to me and I struggle. However, it's early days and I do like the fact that mistakes are more easily fixed. I don't really like using the two mediums in one painting, at least not yet; the flat, opaque gouache next to the translucent glow of watercolour is jarring and I feel like I'm cheating. Also, gouache is so much more difficult to clean up and it stains palettes, even high quality ones. So... so far watercolour, hands down, but in a year I may change my mind.
@CecileYadro Wow... thanks for answering. I started gouache from an online class. HIMI! 😳 It scared me off of gouache & into watercolor. I'm glad you gave an honest review of Himi gouache. Maybe I should try with new paint! PS - you sound like Isabella Rosellini - my fav actress!
I prefer painting with watercolor, but I definitely liked your gouache mushroom more than the watercolor version. Very nice comparison!
Thank you so much 😀
Huh how ?
Gouache is really forgiving.... watercolour needs lot of planning ahead...at each step
for sure, you need to really plan ahead, as there’s no turning back!
Right now, I enjoy blocking in and doing backgrounds with watercolor and then details and finishing touches with gouache.
That's a great idea!

The paper depends on your style. If you use a lot of water you'll need 300 gsm, but if you're painting more dry, any paper will do the job!

With varnish, you can apply on gouache the same as on watercolor.

Can't you use the white gouache on the watercolor mushroom? Thanks for all your time and lessons! 💜

thank you!!!!
You're welcome!
Journey or process of gouache is easy and non thinking for me while the results are stunning but process is too thoughtful in watercolour
I completely agree, even if gouache comes with a learning curve as well.
I’m very confused between choosing watercolours or gouache… can you suggest me ..?? I’m currently an acrylic artist
I’d say gouache then, it’s closer to acrylic than watercolor.
@@CecileYadro thanks
Tu peux utiliser un gun à air chaud pour sécher ton aquarelle très rapidement sans la déplacer.

Or you can do it the other way around!

It depends for everyone!
