I think the big issue comes from watch enthusiasts and collectors that EXCLUSIVELY enjoy mechanical watches. They think quartz is cheap and tacky and they rly are a stain in the community... High quality quartz is enjoyed by many, whether its a G-shock, bulova precisionist or certina precidrive, all are fantastic..

If you like a watch that's all that's important. There's great mechanical and quartz movements. Maintenance is a bit less, as a daily driver, for a quartz movement as well. Just makes sense for some people.
I buy what I like and have been happy with the 2, soon to be 3, that I have. 2 of the 3 are quartz (Armourlite and Citizen) and 1 antique mechanical pocket watch (23 jewel Illinois Bunn Special).

After watching this video I immediately purchased a Yema Rallygraf panda on the leather strap and I have to say that it’s absolutely beautiful. I love the retro racing vibe, that there’s no seconds hand, that the white dial has a creamy patina, that the subdials are recessed underneath the main dial, that the lume is blue, and that it’s visually so well balanced. My Rallygraf is getting more wrist time than my Black Bay or my Monaco. It’s definitely a keeper.

Because I was spending so much time at the beach with my kids this summer I wanted a nice but cheaper indestructible watch and I bought a black on black Casioak. Partly because I saw Slash wearing an all black watch (I think a Hublot). This all black Casio GA2100 is awesome, it didn't look that amazing online when I bought it but on my wrist it's very cool and goes with anything, so much so that I even now wear it to business meetings and I rarely take it off. I have far more expensive watches but this has become one of my favourites and I think I paid about 80 quid for it. Absolute bargain.

I like your selections for the most part. I will give you a nine out of ten. The only pick that issue with was the Casio calculator. The calculator watch was cool in the 80's. Now days with smartphones and smart watches (not a fan of smart watches myself) it just seems out of place and out of time. That being said I did like and subscribe because the other nine picks were spot on.

    • @be5952
      @be5952 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

This---right here---this is why I hesitate to buy a really nice automatic watch.
It's one thing to save like crazy and eventually splurge on a luxury item (fancy watch; used 'luxury' car; etcetera) but if the item requires servicing each time at a cost similar to the cost of just buying a lesser item brand new, then to me it seems a poor value.
I have heard of not very expensive automatic watches going for years without a service (like, maybe even seven to ten years), but one wonders if:
      a) they are an anomaly, or
      b) the watch is 'saving up problems' that will later require a more expensive servicing because you've put off a service for so long?
I know quartz is looked down on by probably most watch snobs, but if you can get past the 'fun' of having a mechanical watch, you can't beat the reliability.

But this was the last of the Lemamia 5100 movements, now they come with the ETA 7750 movement. Plus it also has a titanium case and bracelet. You can't it with the titanium case and bracelet any more.

I had a few Swiss ones, but not the more expensive ones. Mostly small size ones, which are much cheaper or those which needs work. Today wearing a Citizen Nighthawk which is awesome! Lovely to see Citizen get featured prominently. They don't get their due credit even by affordable watch focused TH-camrs. But they've brought so much incredible evolution to watch technology. And I think they make some lovely designs. My only complaint is that they often don't do sapphire crystals even on watches costing $400. At that price point, I don't think it's quite right. Even so, excellent brand. Their Hyperion line in India has some real stunners.

Great video! I love the Laco watches and yes you can find one that doesn’t “wear like a plate”! My expression is “cast iron pan”…… I am so surprised how male dominated the watch world is! Even the British Watchmakers event was mostly men and so many brands literally only make watches 40-50mm wide! To find a reasonably sized automatic watch can be challenging. If it weren’t for brands like Laco, Farer, Kuoe and even Vostok (!) I’d be saving for awhile for something luxury.

Only had 1 limited edition watch from Armourlite (isobrite T100 tritium, black case/strap, glow in the dark skull in the center of the dial with tritium accents) that most watch snobs would probably laugh at. Oh well. I like it. Have a 1912 Illinois Bunn Special pocketwatch as well. Tribute piece to my grandfather. If he hadn't wound his watch with me in his lap, the back off so the movement was exposed explaining how a watch worked, I probably wouldn't like watches as much as I do.
But I did just pull the trigger on a Citizen "record label" bullhead tsuno. Probably pick up a vintage Grand Seiko next.

Oh dear, one massive ommission here. As much as I enjoyed your debatable top ten, which in my view contained some expensive names, the word affordable means many things to many people. The glaring omission here was the non inclusion of Timex (history and pedigree), which alongside Casio, are affordable. The rest of this top 10 can stay in the realm of those with plenty of money can buy, if they want to.

I guess I don't really care what watch snobs think because, well.....they're snobs. And their attitude towards me based simply on my watch, says way more about them than me.
That being said, I do have quite few watches on this list.
For a space geek, the Bulova Lunar Pilot is a no-brainer, and is a real alternative to the Speedmaster without dipping into Homage territory.
The Seiko 5 GMT didn't blow my sox off when I saw it reviewed, but when you actually see one, and now the light plays on it, (I have the Batman), it is a simply gorgeous piece.
I have a casioak, but it doesn't get much wrist time. I got the blue one, and the negative LCD just really makes it harder to read than it should. Nice watch, but seriously don't see where all the hype for this one comes from.
And the PRX is classic. The Powermatic 80 version is above my personal spending limit, but when I was recently on a cruise, it went on sale for $505. Add to the fact that I had $120.00 of "cruise credit" which I couldn't cash out, and my out of pocket went down to $385. That's a must buy, if I ever saw one.

Btw, I didn't notice you including any defunct brands. But if you did, I would suggest Sicura. It's the same company as Breitling (it re-named itself in the 1980s) so it's a nice enough Swiss make, but Sicuras are generally $500-$1k. A lot of overlap with Tissot territory.

I think the eco drive is a great invention and more brands have started to use this kind of drive. I had 16 Watches mostly Swiss even a Golden Rolex, Breitling, Tissot, Omega.IWC etc. (Junghans /German) in the end, most break down if you don't wear them frequently. Mind you mostly were a gift (worked in the Middle East). Now I'm 74 years old and I wear a watch where the look is more important to me and does not have to last for ages! Wenn you get older your outlook changes.

It's sour grapes. They even use the term "quartz crisis" to try and justify quartz snobbery. The only people who thought it was a crisis was the Swiss watch makers that shuttered their doors within the first decade of the release of the quartz watch.
To the consumer it was a revolution. Customers could now have a watch that was on an order of magnitude more accurate than the best made mechanical wrist watch for a mere fraction of the price.
Think about it, in 1973, Swiss watch exports numbered 40 million pieces. In 1983, that number was 3 million. Over 1000 swiss watch makers went out of business.
Why? Because they failed to capitalize on quartz technology and allowed the Japanese and American watch brands to undercut them in price.
And it was those "cheap disposable" quartz watches that eventually bailed them out with the creation the the Swatch group and the sale of those "cheap disposable" Swatches.
Quartz simultaneously sunk, and saved the Swiss Watch industry.

A real watch enthusiast understands that every big watch brand is now run by stale corporate execs and college graduates - neither of which understand their brand DNA nor has any idea about what consumers really want. As a consequence they squander their intellectual property. What has been enlightening is going on Ali Express and finding many many pieces that correct flaws that the big brands have, and fill gaping holes in product offerings. I’ve learned that the Chinese are fantastic at taking feedback from the watch enthusiast buying community and are quick to implement these fixes and improvements. I’ve also learned that the Chinese are quickly mastering the finer points of fit and finish, and am amazed by what you can now get. The scene is changing rapidly. When I look at Swiss watches now I see clumsy designs poorly implemented, and terrible value propositions.
