  • Todays video we are looking at some 90’s terrain. This is the first book of a two book series GW did back in the 90’s, designed to show the public how they made some of their most iconic terrain pieces.

    They stopped making those books so you'd be "encouraged" to buy their expensive terrain models. That's why I love Terrain Tutor, Wylock, and others like them keeping this part of the hobby alive.

      May I be cheeky and put my little channel forward for that too? Nowhere near as good as the two you mentioned but my builds are all about the same thing. Making everything yourself and having fun.

    That books is something that GW would never make in this day and age. Seeing Nigel stillman as the name attached the book doesn't come as surprise, that guy was one of the best members of the design team GW ever had. His gaming ethos was spot on.
    Now I have to resist the temptation to track down a copy on ebay.
    Looking forward to seeing what else you make with ideas from the book. The house looks great.

      Yeah this book is truly a thing of the past. No way will they ever do anything like this now. You can still get a copy for not too much on ebay at the mo. Look out for my next vid as its on another piece of terrain 😀

    Loved this video. I have this and the later book and still refer to them to this day. Its great to see them do what they set out to do: Get people making terrain. Hopefully you will make more!

    This will sound a bit trite, but man, looking through these pages reminded me of the good old days when GW was about "Look at all the cool stuff you can make!", instead of "Look at all the cool stuff you can buy from us!"

    • @JonnyWatsonGaming
      @JonnyWatsonGaming  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mate not trite at all! I feel exactly the same. Going through this book is like being 11 again 😀

    Basically this book is the foundational text for terrain building in the modern tabletop wargaming hobby. The techniques and even the projects themselves are still used today, spread out over thousands of TH-cam channels and blogs.

    I think I listened to an older podcast where the feeling of accomplishment has left the hobby in many ways due to pre fab terrain products. Since getting back into 90's gaming I can attest to say that there is no better feeling of making or at least having a go at making terrain and learning from it and then producing something you can enjoy seeing and playing with on the table. Great to see you coving this book Jonny and nice terrain made also :)

    • @JonnyWatsonGaming
      @JonnyWatsonGaming  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is very interesting. Add the new technology of today like 3D printing and we are slowly slipping away from what made the hobby great. We are falling into a world of I want it now. Don’t get me wrong new technology has its place but the innocent years of making it yourself or giving it a go seem somewhat behind us. This book is a great example of what the hobby used to be.

    I've got this book! Made sure I got it when it came out, a great jumping off point for much of what I've done since, I'd been making military scale dioramas before but this added more depth and many other ideas
    From memory the crashed escape pod and the highway??! Were exemplary pieces shown in the book. I'm not doing well at getting my kids into making stuff, just have to keep plugging on I guess, thanks for the vid!

    Anyone who doesn't want to do the cactus can use the little fluffy ball things that get sold in arts and crafts stores for weird alien bushes. And with easter coming there's going to be styrofoam eggs everywhere for assorted alien weirdness.
    Or, I dunno, a big egg. Maybe a local chicken cult.

    Great book that. I’ve got it and the other one as well. Both brilliant. We weren’t allowed to make the cactus when I worked at GW. It was too spiky and considered a hazard to kids lol. I must get round to making terrain again. Used to really enjoy that part of the hobby

    It seems as though scratch building terrain is a bit of a dying art these days, it's a real shame. I used to love making buildings from bits of cardboard. I guess these days I tend to buy MDF stuff but I use that as a skeleton onto which I build additional details, it's kind of a half way house - it's not quite scratch built but without some scratch building techniques, the buildings would otherwise look crap.

    • @JonnyWatsonGaming
      @JonnyWatsonGaming  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I totally agree it’s very easy nowadays to buy pre-made stuff, and with 3D printers getting more and more popular the fun and art of making your own is some what slipping away. However as I discovered it’s a great way to mix kids and the hobby, so for me it’s something I will do more of. 😀
