Actually, I think he was 25 at the time of this recording...Wikipedia shows his birthdate as February 1993, and this performance took place 07-12-2018 - which, by my math, would make him 25 at the time. But no matter - whether 22 or 25, this would be a remarkable achievement. I applaud Lucas for taking this brilliant concerto into his repertoire and playing it with such panache - performances like this will go a long way in giving it the recognition it deserves.
Coming back to this magnificent performance of this magnificent piece four years later, I think about all the rage of the likes of horowitz - who does not even come close to Lucas Jussen's PERFECT playing, exactly as the master composer notated it.
The violins are butterflies, the other instruments are the rushes moving with breezes and the piano represents the Nile waters flowing quietly, here and there a splash. Lovely, passionate and warm music to delight the senses...e
The section beginning at 13:52 is the most beautiful passage imaginable. Lucas's playing of it is pure rapture. I especially adore 14:40, 14:54 and 15:05-15:20. I have never heard such beautiful piano and orchestral playing in my life. Beyond spectacular and breathtaking !
Two absolute geniuses in one family. This performance of Lucas is wonderful and unique. It is impossible for me to describe this performance and Lucas's eidetic memory of the score. Genius can not describe it.. I have loved these brothers since they were little children. They are both geniuses. This is a performance of one half of the Jussun genius to the world.
Don Thom probably a good guess. I’m certain his sight readings go quickly and then he works through it in his head and on the keys. Takes many hours of hard work. He probably hears and sees it in his head. I’ve spent most of my life playing but never had this degree of mental and physical coordination.
... one of my favorite piano concertos. Beautiful rendition: sensitivity, color, phrasing, style, delicacy ... the perfect image was found, the message was felt, the collaboration and interaction with the orchestra was superbly highlighted (by the way, the orchestration is divine). We all thank you for posting! God help you further!
This is my favorite of the 5 saint-Saens piano concertos and I'm glad to see it get some attention instead of Number 2. The pianist is amazingly good. This performance of the concerto is on the same level as Collard/Previn and Roge/Dutoit. Excellent!
find Thibaudet and the Concertgebouw Orkest live performance -- two recordings of the same performance are up on youtube, one w Score (nice) and another w the filmed concert performance. Stunning playing from all concerned!
@@MuseDuCafe Thibaudet owns this concerto. Jussen Brothers own many pieces but I don’t think anyone can top Thibaudet for this piece. Love it so much❤️❤️
Years since I heard this concerto and never as definitive as this performance. If one would be a great pianist, one characteristic one must possess is the ability to play within each note, each phrase and always with just the right amount of authority. Notice that he's allowing the beautiful Hamburg Steinway he's playing to really sing. It's not just the notes. Bravo.
this is one of my favorite concertos; the progressions and the build up of this musical piece to its climax is quite exquisite and the brothers are doing a fantastic job of bringing it to life
Thanks Lucas, I really love Saint Saens' shimmery music- you continue to amaze me as you develop your skills and talent and repertoire-excellent backing in the orchestra too. Thank you
Mature means, perhaps, at peak. We are all constantly developing if we have humanity in some measure, Rob. I'm sure Lucas would tell you that too. Think a while- what about you? I change constantly and i'm almost 80. Cathy
This is simply and purely perfection. There simply are not adequate superlatives in the English language to describe your abilities. True genius status. Thank you, Lucas.
9:22 - This little passage, with the piano supported by the hushed strings, is one of the most special moments in the entire concerto. Some play it a touch too fast, and some too slow, but Lucas and the orchestra perform it at a nice pace, perhaps lingering to enjoy a really sweet moment in Saint-Saens writing.
Indeed! This passage being where the 1st theme (in minor now in major) of the single note repeated with changing harmonies underneath is exquisite and always moves me emotionally. Such delicacy and hope. My fave concerto of the 5!
These brothers are the most profound, God - inspired musicians, not pianists only. They are able to conceive everything in whole and in minimal details. That's why they sound so gorgeous and incomparable. Let God keep them for His glory and our blessing!!!
Lovely. It's a beautiful concerto and you play it like a champion. Everything flows so naturally and beautifully (impeccable) Camille Saint-Saëns' music is so harmonious and original. Excellent performance by both Jussen and the orchestra (Spanjaard) Bravi!!!
I have never heard this concerto before! So rarely played. A hidden gem though and beautifully executed. Definitely Saint-Saens moving a little into Impressionism in the "Egyptian" music. I'm sure he must have influenced both D'Indy and of course Ravel and Debussy.
Cheers, Lucas! You blew the roof off the place. Your a genuine piano god. Consider you and your brother are always welcome in Chicago! Drop by sometime and I will buy the drinks! Peace! 🙏
I think the music literally runs through him physically and into the instrument. The lifelong effort is obvious in the fingering and in the ever so perfect nuances, this massive hunk of wood, strings and tension so totally harnessed and controlled. Such is the supreme genius on the part of both brothers.
Marvelous concert. Never heard this piece before. Lucas and his brother are very talented. The conductor Looks like Pope Pius XII. Great orchestra too. Keep going.
Before bowing, the first thing he and his brother do when appropriate is to give the conductor a hug and sometimes the first violinist. It makes you smile.
I have always been a huge fan of the Jussen brothers and Lucas' rendition of the Saint-Saën's Egyptian is magical. Stunning clarity, and subtle elegant phrasing. Pure genius! I studied the Egyptian in my grad years never performed. Though I have perform a great deal of the Jussen's repertoire ... their Poulenc double piano is also breathtaking and one I love to perform .
He wrote this apparently after visiting Egypt. Perhaps he found some musical themes from there. This sounds somewhat ethereal in comparison to earlier pieces. It takes a skilled performer to play his concertos. This one has haunting melodies in it. It's hard to pick the ones I like the best, #2 and #5 certainly make the cut.
From a Filipina : Ang galing nya at ang ganda ng tugtugin. He’s so good and what beautiful music! Unfortunately there is no word for excellent in Tagalog except the Spanish translation.
Thank you so much Lucas, I really really enjoyed watching you playing with such amazing passion and sensitivity too. You are absolutely amazing and awesome too. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags

Simplesmente ESPETACULAR!!!
Thanks for sharing this. If I may be allowed one critical (constructive?) comment. I'd much rather see the artist take his bows and witness the appreciation of the audience, than the credits scrolling by to spoil the mood. Frankly, if credit is due, (and I mean NO disrespect to the technical staff) I'd list the players who accompanied Mr. Jussen. FWIW - F.
There is no questioning the brilliance and talent of soloist Lucas Jussen. The camera and editing work leaves as lot to be desired, however. This is a piano concerto, not an orchestral showpiece. The video should help visualize that distinction.
Don't be such a grouch. Have your eyes never strayed to the orchestra during a performance of a concerto.....mine have.....or perhaps you're a couch critic and never been to a live performance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh yes, there usually is some very distracting violinist in the orchestra that one can feast one's eyes on. Music and crumpets, what more could one want?
I completely agree. I have always had a problem with the Jussen Brothers' videos. The camera is always zooming or panning. They never allow us a shot where we can look and focus on what we want to see. The video editors and cameramen always usurp the focus and nearly always make the wrong choices. Extremely disappointing to the point that I never watch, but do listen with rapt attention.
This boy is just gorgeous, and supremely talented.
Yes - and as you know, his good looks make his playing much better.
Absolutely brilliant playing in every aspect, with a perfect balance of emotion and technique. Bravo!
One has to keep reminding oneself that Lucas was 22 when he recorded this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AMAZING
