But I like to think that she's also very happy for seeing artists who worked for A24 getting this kind of recognition. Love that Daniel Kwan brought up the imposter syndrome. I like to think I've achieved a great deal of accomplishments over the last decade or so of my life but sometimes feel that I've 'fallen into' success. Whenever someone gives me kudos on anything I still think to myself 'What'd I do?!'
Plus it’s one of the rare times where not only every nominee directed their film, but also was nominated for best director. In fact, the only exception was Tony Kushner who wasn’t nominated for director but Spielberg was.
I feel like EEAAO definitely nailed the “Original” part of this category. I like some of the other movies too in this category but I don’t know if I would call them “original” and would probably say well-made, well-written, or well-crafted instead lol.
Ever since I heard the lines in Scream (1996) "Why do you want to know my name?" "Because I want to know who I'm looking at.", I've been hooked about scripts. Thus, as a writer/author of novel manuscripts and short story pieces, I can understand these guys' perspectives
Being a Marvel fan myself, I was not impressed with the multiverse worldbuilding story of Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Not all multiverses were explored but instead were just easter eggs/hints for the next big MCU multiverse films, and the title was misleading obviously. Meanwhile, EEAAO is the best multiverse film of all time for me so far and the fact it is NOT based on a comic book BUT AN ORIGINAL STORY brilliantly crafted by the Daniels made me respect the duo even more!
Also, I'm sad for Martin McDonagh for losing all the categories he was nominated for, just like his work on Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) despite that he already won an Oscar before in 2006 for his live action short film Six Shooter.
Off topic, I know Andrew and Florence are both British but some times my mind expects them to speak in American accent just like in their movie characters lol
In this category, I would choose both The Banshees of Inisherin, a great script by Martin McDonagh, or The Fabelmans I liked as Spielberg tells his childhood and his parents, or the twisted Triangle of Sadness by Ruben östlund but with 3 that I liked them, it was understandable that EEAAO won it, but it has a great history of the multiverse and... boy!!!, did The Daniels find out about it.
The banshees of Inisherin in my opinion deserved to win for the original screenplay! Martin McDonagh is a genius and amazing screenwriter!😃 Anyway compliments to The Daniels!!😉👏🏻
EEAAO is a deserved winner, my #3 in the line up, so happy for it, but the Academy values concept over actual writing, imho. And you can see it in the anonymous ballots, where most of voters were saying "it's original screenplay and the film is really original". WTF? I would have loved McDonagh or Field to get it.
Wow, they started working on the script for Everything Everywhere All At Once in 2010!! That explains a lot. I've been studying the smallest details and structure of that script and it is astounding.
Best Nomination in years, If I have to vote I'll definitely vote for TÁR followed by Banshees but EEAAO is also a wonderful pick. But i wonder why didn't they divide screenplay and director to different ppl like Daniels was surely winning director they can give screenplay to someone else.
Academy members have no idea how many votes each film will get in each category, so no one really "picked" who wins; no one knows the vote results until Oscar night. But I'm sure many people voted screenplay for Banshees, and director for Daniels.

Everything Everywhere had a great screenplay (it was my favourite movie of the year) but I kinda wanted Banshees to win this so it wouldn’t go home empty handed.
The rock scene is a clear example of why Everything won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. The level of creativity, imagination and love required to write something like that could only come from geniuses like the Daniels. One of the best screenplays to win this award in history.
I'm so happy with EEAAO with winning so much awards this year... BUT... With this category in particular, it shows that the Oscars maybe focused a bit too much on EEAAO. My personal choice for Screenplay was The Banshees of Inisherin, 'cause it was so much original and so unique. Hell, even The Fabelmans deserved Screeplay if it won here. EEAAO has a great script, don't get me wrong. It just doesn't feel like it's a Screenplay film, more a Director one. But congratulations Daniels, but please Oscars, give McDonagh something next time.

We wanted to show the difference between the horror of the story and the beauty of the island and just to make it the most cinematic thing possible.”
