When Kimmel, in his nervousness, tries to keep "La La Land" up there, joking, "Aren't there enough awards to go around?" the La La Land producer saved that moment of diminishing the winners by just saying, "I look forward to handing this [statue] to my 'Moonlight' friends." Could one say that comment was the equivalent to “All lives matter”?
Warren tried to stop it before it happened , it’s not his fault everyone thought he was being weird. They literally handed him the wrong card
For those who don't know what actually happened, here it is:
There were two Price Waterhouse people present, one on each side of the stage in order to accomodate presenters who would show up on one side or the other. Each held a full set of envelopes. As one would hand as envelope to a presenter, the other would place the duplicate in his briefcase.
The award just before Best Picture was Best Actress. That went to Emma Stone. The Price Waterhouse guy with the duplicate, however, failed to put his duplicate back in the briefcase. So, he held both that envelope and the Best Picture envelope in his hand as Beatty approached him to get the envelope for the Best Picture. He (the accountant) then showed Beatty the easiest way to open the envelope. During this demonstration, the envelopes got switched. So, when Beatty open his on stage, it said "Emma Stone La La Land." Beatty was confused and just focused on the La La Land. So, the blame rests with the accountant. As for Beatty, should he have had the presence of mind to say " Hey, we have a problem here. This is the wrong envelope"?
Maybe. But its a high pressure situation, so I'm not going to presume to say that he bears the blame and whether his age factors in. The blame clearly rests with the Price Waterhouse guy.
All of that is right. But actually Warren didn’t announce anything. He got confused by the card and froze, so he tried to show it to Faye Dunaway who then proceeded to read out La La Land.
@EamonKelly In the words of Ed Mcmahon, you are correct sir.
But did the guy get reprimanded for that mistake?
Thank you for this explanation. It’s like the perfect storm. A bunch of things had to happen/go wrong for this mistake to have been made.
..and lets be real. The both had a few. the least.
Somewhere, Steve Harvey is breathing a sigh of relief that he wasn't the only one to make this mistake
They were given the wrong card, Steve Harvey had the right card and called out the wrong women

Jordan Horowitz deserves a lot of credit for handling the situation as best he could. He announced Moonlight had won, grabbed the card and showed it for a long time so the cameras could focus on it, and was extremely humble and gracious as he showed real joy for Moonlight to have won.
100000% agree! My blood boils every time ppl give him crap for snatching the card from Beatty. He was up there and stood up like a pro and accepted defeat like a pro! Kudos to him!
It was also unclear to him how the error had been made. At this point, he probably thought Warren had goofed and was understandably angry! But even, so, he pulled this off with much grace and humility.
@@user-ir1vt6gr6h If you listen closely at 3:11 you would hear that he actually did apologize to Warren when he said "Oh Warren, I'm sorry".. At 3:17 you'd see that Warren had the card again. So he DID apologize off screen and handed Warren back the card.. Not only that, also notice how he held the card high up to make sure that the camera zooms in on it to show the world the correct winner, instead of trying to hide the fact that they lost.. Most sore losers out there would have wanted to hide that. This guy was an absolute class act under a very painful situatuon and handled defeat like a pro. Gives me anxiety lol. I'm a show producer, and while I've certainly never produced anything this big... I've definitely had moments where I am standing in the wings watching something go wrong on stage and I have to figure out how to stop it before it gets worse. Freaking out is definitely the right term.
You know what, someone should do a film about this whole debacle.
@@PowerDiva Please, lets all pretend like some goblin in hollywood comes out of the Oscar hole every year and prints out the winners...
it was set up this way. A "humiliation ritual" of sorts, for the people who worked on Moonlight.
Who printed the card that said "emma stone moonlight?" Did no one see that before they put it in the envelope ?
This is a humiliation ritual, hollywood style.
@@blackleague212 so if you actually read up on the details of this, you'll learn exactly how it happened. But first you have to know how this whole process works. There are actually two people in charge, one on each side of the stage and each of them have a set of printed envelopes for the winners. So there are two sets of envelopes out there with identical results on each one. Emma Stone won Best Actress a few moments before this happened, and the envelope that was read with her name came from the person on the left side of the stage. Which means the guy on the right side of the stage still had a Best Actress envelope that said Emma Stone inside. When it was time for Best Picture... this envelope was handed to the presenters on their way to the stage, instead of the Best Picture results.
The card said Emma Stone - Lala Land... but on the outside it said Actress in a Leading Role and no one noticed until after it was read on air. If you pause this video at the right moment you can see that. You can also see producers coming onto the stage to look at the card, realizing what happened and then bringing the actual results onto the stage. This is what the producer of Lala Land holds up to the camera as the cast of Moonlight is coming up to the stage.
It was a royal f*ck up from the people who are supposed to be in charge of making sure f*ck ups don't happen. It was not an intentional thing by the Oscars... because the Oscars do not control that part of the ceremony. It's actually a completely separate company in charge of the results and the envelopes. So they have no reason to screw Moonlight. They have no stake in the results.
I'm not sure why anyone would want to humiliate Moonlight anyway - but if that is the case, as you suggest it didn't work. The only people humiliated by this snafu are the Oscars and perhaps Lala Land for winning, then getting it taken away. You're looking for a villain, in a situation where it was simply an unfortunate mistake, brought on by carelessness.
Shoutout to the lalaland guy for making a clear transition and preventing awkard confusion

Oscar 2017: hold my beer
its a good comment.
Miss Universe debacle was the most cringeworthy. Especially when the Colombian girl had to stoop so that the crown could be yanked from head and placed in the Filipino girl's head. Chile the embarrassment!! Lol after gliding and waving across the stage, believing she was the most beautiful... "Mirror Mirror on the wall"
Hahahahahah
HAHAHA
The Oscar stunt was so fake though
What a good guy for not being confused but just handing it over
2017: This is the biggest Oscars blunder ever
2022: Slap my Chris Rock
I love how at 2:31 Emma Stone realizes and goes "ohmygod..ohmygod"
yes.. if you listen intently, you can actually hear her saying it
she was saying “we’re not? we’re not?”
@@Andrea-em7bi i think it was we're not? Ohmygod.
Ryan Gosling’s reaction was even better, he was just covering his mouth to stifle his laughter. 😂
Actress 🙄 she went from fake crying during the spech to the OMG OMG shtick pretty quickly
Lol "we lost by the way but ya know..." he was going to make his speech whether or not
LOL... to be fair, he first shook his head and said "No." when the other guy told him to make a speech but the other guy insisted.
Cod4 Wii he was a total douchebag , he knew and yet took his time to steal someone else’s spotlight
@@nadia1994ization he got to know during his speech you dummy
@@773SleepyHollow right. He didn’t want to do it lol
It still makes me laugh hard. Producer of La La Land said "We lost, by the way" 🤣😭😭😭🤣🤣
I love how we have evolved as humans with the amount of empathy we have towards one another!
imagine if they then announced that moonlight hadn't won either
I love your style lol
if it had been manchester by the sea by mistake jimmy kimmel would have taken an oscar away from matt damon since he was a producer of manchester by the sea
There would be riots.
James McLoad Lol
James McLoad lmao riots cant do shit yo. liberal are falling apart

Dodl Didl for the guy that won? The movie itself won. Everyone on stage won. The only reason you think the producer won was because he was a rude jerk, tearing cards out of peoples (a Hollywood legend to be exact) hands, deciding it was his job to explain the mix up. Those aren’t things people with nice character do. See all of the people on stage who DIDNT make themselves the center of attention.
evilSWA - beyond pandora films When a movie wins best picture, the producers are given the Oscar, so the guy did think he won, and he wasn’t rude. When you’re in the movie business, it’s your dream to be on that stage, so of course he’d be a little pissed off when he found he it was a mistake but he kept his composure, congratulated the real winners, and gave them the award, and walked off. That is nice character.
I feel bad for the people that won but won't be remembered because we stuck in la la land
Yeah, what he is saying is nice and it seems like he is trying to keep his composure, but him clearly ripping the card out of Beatty's hand speaks volumes.
@@evilsWa Dude, he wasn't being a rude jerk. He saw something get fucked up and swiftly handled it - that's literally what he does for a living. His mannerisms are very typical of most producers, that's just the way they act. Calm down. 😂😂😂
I thought the Will Smith situation was the worst in Oscar's history, that is until i remembered this.
2:10 ‘keep dreaming’
4:47 ‘the hell with dreams’
Lol I never realized the contrast
Imagine saying "Moonlight" and then being like, sorry sorry we read the wrong card again.
@Cryer24597 😂😂
"No no, we are wrong again... The best picture winner is actually 'titanic', once again!"
@@jupiter965 not even titanic THE GODFATHER
And then go 'Batman v. Superman' actually won the best picure.

This has to be the biggest prank of 2017
Banele Khumalo because of Steven Harvey parody hahaha.
Banele Khumalo lolll😂

Disrespectful
Yeah but she makes a good point though, one that even professional movie critics agree with, which is that La La Land tops moonlight in every considerable way, it's not even close.
1:17 emma loking at andrew
I’m still gagged he said “blue eyed” wife like that part was necessary 💀
Exately😅😅😅😅
THE WAY HE SNATCHED THE CARD FROM WARREN. Hands would have been thrown
Warren was thinking about it lol
When did dat happen???
Who did that?
I meant would not have made me feel better.
@abba & peach @abba & peach No it doesn't fit the moment. It shows a fundamental lack of character and immaturity. That's why Warren didn't do it back.
"WHAT DID YOU DO?!" Seriously Jimmy? Poor Warren. He was given the wrong card and he even tried to indicate to say to Faye that it was wrong. And she read it out.
Do you honestly not know Kimmel was joking?!
Lmfao he was joking. 😆
Nope, he's not serious
@@Anfubvinch sure, he was joking. but warren clearly felt ashamed bc of what happened, blaming himself, he looked sad tbh, I felt so bad for him :(
Yeah I thought that was a bit of a cruel joke. You could see warren was feeling guilty even though it wasn’t his fault, and it wasn’t necessary for Jimmy to make him feel even worse again for something he didn’t do wrong himself.
"Is that the worst you could do?"
~Will Smith
2:56 damn, the way the guy grabbed that envelope away from Warren Beatty. A sphincter shutting moment for Warren or anyone in that postion.
5:59 Samuel L Jackson taking a proud picture and wiping a single tear is everything

I thought it was rather inappropriate
@@chuckychuck8318 are you a poc?

It was the academy's fault! They gave himt he wrong envelope!
Serious question, does anyone remember what “Moonlight” was about? No, it was a movie that was made that no one wanted to watch.
"we lost by the way" lol 2:37

That guy is a pro. Restored some of my faith in humanity
Edit: THOSE guys are pros, the hairstyles confused me :D
at first I thought he said "We're lost by the way" with all that mess going on in the back. I thought they were deciding which one to speak next lol
I'm dead XD
No one is talking about that guy, Producer Fred Burger. Before he even started his speech, he knew there was some kind of issue. He shouldn't have started talking. He came off as very entitled.
I feel bad for the moonlight cast their shine were stolen from them
They literally won best picture?
@@bigoneflow The difference is that even years later, people don't talk about how Moonlight won best picture; they talk about how how they gave it to La La Land as a mistake. They DID have their moment stolen because their win was completely overshadowed by a) the mistake and b) how bad people felt for the La La Land cast/crew.
@@aimal666 i came looking for this video and i searched 'moonlight oscars mixup'

Imli no moonlight just sucked and la la land had Emma stone and she’s hot asf and they should have won
This never gets old.
It’s not Warren’s fault he was given the wrong card. Terrible for all people involved.
Yep
Warren was confused, he was hesitant. It was Faye Dunaway who made the announcement...
Because she too read what was on it. It was the people who gave them the cards that screwed up.
He was hesitant but he gave the envelope to her anyway. He should've said something.
Too me, it looked like he was trying to signal her to read the card also, but she was so grabby.
Aamnah Jawad she is blonde why sie didn't realize it's wrong card? does she know how to read? lol

Yes, I've heard that. Besides, Warren knew that something was wrong, he grabbed in the envelope searching for another card, just to be sure. But that stupass woman read it aloud!
